I found this inspiring! I'm new to art, I'm trying to focus rather than flailing around attempting to reproduce anything that catches my eye! The freedom of experimentation is pretty scary and I tend to earnestly try to make "something" but because my skills are few, most of my efforts seem to fail. I haven't yet been able to just go with ideas. Watching you try this and that with supplies you aren't used to gives me hope and encouragement to just have a go! Thank you!
Hi Laura, I work in collage and mixed media and absolutely loved your conversation with Julie. But this play session has also been truly inspiring. Thanks xx
I am truly enjoying your channel. You have so many ideas that I have been looking for. So inspiring that makes me jump into it. I am so glad I found you. Thank you for all the wonderful ideas.
Darn! I was at an estate sale just yesterday hunting for vintage ephemera and I passed up a room with hundreds of vintage sewing patterns! I wish I would have grabbed a few!
This is so gorgeous!! I’ve been binge watching your content since seeing a sponsored Instagram post but I’m so excited to work on some collage papers of my own ❤
I just ordered the catalyst brushes. I love how you make art feel so effortless. Idk I’m one of those that always tries to complicate things and over work till the cows come home. That’s what often stops me from my practice. I’m an elementary art teacher and really hope to also practice my own art again. Thank you! These videos are so inspiring I may have to take ur class bc I’m almost out of your content lol
This is a great idea, Laura. I have to produce some small paintings for a show next month (I'm still a relatively newbie artist) and I want to make a couple of cohesive series of paintings. So I think I'll do some experimentation with one large piece of mixed media paper, doing something like this with a limited colour palette, and I can use a viewfinder to hopefully find some pleasing sections that I can cut out for my small paintings!
I am inspired! Thank you for sharing your play time. One question: I didn't catch the name of the color that began with Titanium. Is it Titanium Buff? Thank you!
Yes, we did and I LOVE them! Glad that you enjoyed the little video, look forward to seeing your art again when the time is right for you - it'll be there when you are ready. Miss you, big hugs always Xx
Laura I just left a comment but what do u recommend for a person that lives color. I enjoy bright neon palettes as well as these more muted tones. I have recognized that I if I am using bright neon colors that when I also combine neutrals and toned down colors with them that it makes B it feel more sophisticated maybe? I think I answered my own question. I’ll start with brights mixed w neutral s
Thank you! I am always reading names wrong! My eyes seem to race ahead and decide what they want to see 🤣 Tim Holtz, must remember that. Great stencils!
It's an ink spray made my Lindy's Stamp Gang. I am not sure of the exact one, it creates beautiful shimmering dual tone effects. Definitely a fun addition to a mixed media toolkit.
@@LauraHornArt thanks! Many years ago I used a similar spray dye…I tried very thing to make it stable. With no luck. And not light fast. I have some acrylic paint in a small bottle that has a similar shimmery effect…but not spray. I love to spray! I have written to that source to ask about the permanence. It Has very pretty effect!
I love your vlog but today I cringed while watching you tear up that precious pattern. I'm an artist and I love to use odd bits and pieces in my work. I also love to pick up old patterns to alter and sew original clothes. Another creative outlet. I also feel that way about old books. I will continue to watch your other vlogs and Instagram posts with their luscious colors.
Thank you for the play. Sometimes I just get too serious. You reminded me what this is all about.

Yes, give it a go! Once you break through the fear, experimenting in this way is so fun and delivers wonderful surprises!
Your playful free-spirit way of showing your process is so enjoying and made me feel want to try it myself. Thanks!
Fun!! What a great idea to mix some clear gesso with the white to strengthen the paper - I love it and cannot wait to try that-thank you Laura!
Hi Laura, I work in collage and mixed media and absolutely loved your conversation with Julie. But this play session has also been truly inspiring. Thanks xx
Great reminder of the value of doing a master board. Thank you, Laura, for sharing your process. I think I will start a new series. 🙂
only your collage papers end up beautifully composed and looking like a finished piece!
Thank you! Can't help myself :)
I’m excited to dig into my stash of vintage sewing patterns and give this a try!
Good one, Laura. Gave me a nudge of inspiration... and a push to overcome the 'fear' of thinking you can't do art! Thanks.
I learn so much for you every time I watch a video. Love what you have done here.
What a totally fun and organic technique! Thank you. And I love the unique colors you used too!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! It's a fun approach.
Thank you Laura, I'm absolutely obsessed with your tutorials. You are the best!!!

Love the colors❣️❣️
Love love the colors. I like how you move it around to find a just right compositions
This exercise could be repeated any number of times with different colour themes. Could be a great way to try out new supplies
Love it! The colours and marks reminds me of a topographic map. This inspires me to just play and not worry about finished pieces. Thanks Laura!
Thank you for sharing this! I really enjoyed it 💗
I absolutely enjoy every minute of this video!!! Collage and mixed media are my favorites! Thank you Laura!!!
I am truly enjoying your channel. You have so many ideas that I have been looking for. So inspiring that makes me jump into it. I am so glad I found you. Thank you for all the wonderful ideas.

Brilliant thank you, exactly what I needed to see! xxx
I am glad you are starting to share more on RUclips! I know this older but I still enjoyed it!
Love this... there's a person walking through an archway of an old building on that blue bit ❤
Absolutely love this! Such a brilliant idea xxx
Definitely felt inspired watching this and wanting to go have a play as well, thanks Laura xx
Using acrylic medium or paint in the soft pastels is something I love to do. It gives an earthy, grainy texture, chalky, but also adds permanence.
Wonderful stuff Laura - i just love everything you do
Darn! I was at an estate sale just yesterday hunting for vintage ephemera and I passed up a room with hundreds of vintage sewing patterns! I wish I would have grabbed a few!
Love this video! I feel inspired ! thank you Laura!
It’s Tim Holtz btw 😉 and you can get his stencils almost anywhere online as well Dina Wakley stencils. Always enjoy your videos 👍😃
I am totally going to make myself an ink spray bottle and hunt out some old paper now. Inspiring as always, Laura, thank you :)
At 13:21is the view finder it looks like a blue silhouette of a person.
How fantastic! I loved this so much, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! It's such a fun way to make art. Completely takes the pressure off!
Very fun! Thanks!
Thank you; you gave me so many ideas!👍
I love this.
Using the viewfinder, as you scan the piece, I see a topographical map. Lovely!
Yes! Love that!
This is so gorgeous!! I’ve been binge watching your content since seeing a sponsored Instagram post but I’m so excited to work on some collage papers of my own ❤

That sounds wonderful! I love using viewfinders, even for inspiration from my own larger pieces!
ModPodge is pva glue + water. Make your own for a fraction of the price
Thanks so much. How do you finish to top layer so the charcoal, pastels etc do not rub/smudge?
Hi Kathi, I use a spray fixative by Sennelier to seal any charcoal or pastel marks in my work.
I am inspired! Thank you for sharing your play time. One question: I didn't catch the name of the color that began with Titanium. Is it Titanium Buff? Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed the video - the paint colour is Golden Titan Mars Pale.
So beautiful - Love you XX Didn't we buy those earrings together? Lovely video Laura....you are making me want to get back into it. xxx
Yes, we did and I LOVE them! Glad that you enjoyed the little video, look forward to seeing your art again when the time is right for you - it'll be there when you are ready. Miss you, big hugs always Xx

hi laura, why not simply use clear gesso? is it because you wanted a bit of white?
Hi Carol, yes it is because I wanted a bit of white as well as some areas where you can see the pattern details. Just getting some variety in!
I think you said Jim Holtz for the stencils but it's Tim Holtz for anyone who's looking for them :)
Yes, I thought it said Jim for about 7 years 🙊 I say it in a few of my videos. Sorry Tim!!
What is the music you are playing in background?
Hi Laura, I love the music behind your video . Who it is? You inspire me a lot. Thanks!
Thank you, I will have to check re music, we get most of our music from a subscription service called Soundstripe.
What's the song playing in the background? I'm looking for new music to enjoy while I create. Thanks.
Laura, is there a reason for the Modge Podge to be glossy or will matte work as well? Thank you!
Both will work fine, glossy dries slightly clearer than matte, but it really comes down to personal preference. I use both!
@@LauraHornArt thank you! I have matte on hand so that’s what I’ll use.
Wonderful. Btw, it's Tim Holtz, not Jim Holtz in case people can't find his stencils.
Thank you! I am always reading names wrong! My eyes seem to race ahead and decide what they want to see 🤣 Tim Holtz, must remember that. Great stencils!
What is the magic blue spray ink?m
It's an ink spray made my Lindy's Stamp Gang. I am not sure of the exact one, it creates beautiful shimmering dual tone effects. Definitely a fun addition to a mixed media toolkit.
