I feel terrible for what’s been happening with the Torino. All the hard work and hours spent only to end up in the situation you are in is heartbreaking to watch. You deserve more than that.
I've definitely had put in all the effort I could have
@@HotRodGuyGarage I once seized up someone’s engine on a test run, I had rebuilt it and my stupid mistake so spent my own money putting it right 😳😃
So sorry for your engine trouble. I wish I had an engine I could give you so you could make it to the Nationals. Hang in there!
I really wanted to bring the torino, but I'm working on a backup plan
I feel your heartbreak...you've poured your heart in and anything and everything has gone against you. I'd say this is one of these times when it's time to put your own emotional health first. Have a break, go enjoy the No name nationals and plan for next year 😪
I put in 300% so it will definitely take some time to recover from it at this point
Sometimes you eat the bear
Sometimes the bear eats you😢
I'm at a loss for what to say Russ. One thing that all your videos have shown is your character and determination to get things done. It might not be finished in time for no name nationals but I know you will get it done. Hang in there. You've got lots of people behind you lifting you up.
I'm just going to step back from it and rethink the setup and go forward from there
With you in charge, the Torino will be rolling proud again one day. If not this year's No Name Nationals, it will be next year, or another event. Good things happen to good folks. You handled this much better than most would. Respect to you Sir!
Definitely need to rethink things with it at this point
Hate to hear this Russ, proud of you for not giving up so easy, I applaud you for that. Keep your head up man maybe it's a sign something they could have happened on your trip there or back.
You know how the struggle is, time for plan F
That's to bad because it is one cool car. Man I was really looking forward to seeing her run.
It just wasn't meant to happen I guess
Dog-Gone Brother! I truly hate that you are having such trouble trying to get to the track. I hope things turn around soon for you. Sounds like you need a day or two to breathe. I’m praying for you man 👍
I'm going to step back from the torino for a while and rethink things . And thank you
Russ, I am really sorry for your luck with your Torino. My heart goes out to you. I've been in your shoes and I know that sinking feeling when you're under the gun and bad things keep happening. Your a fighter that doesn't know the word quit and you'll get one of your car's to the race track. The best of luck to you! Can't wait for your next video.
It happens sometimes, can't win them all just means I need to reevaluate the car at this point and where I go from here
People deal with disappointment and frustration in different ways, watching your videos shows us your character. Is this potentially a big issue- yes, will it stop you from figuring it out and fixing it- no. Things happen for a reason cant always figure out why but you wont give up buddy. Best of luck and never throw in the towel you got this.
I've definitely got to step back and reevaluate things
Life always loves to kick you when you are Down, russ
Keep ya head up
Life's kicked me around since day 1. Maybe one day I'll understand why
@HotRodGuyGarage i feel ya
I swear some of us are just born to struggle
Ive been building the same motorcycle for the past 4 years
And every time i get it close to rideable
It breaks, ive spent close to 8k and have ridden the thing less than 1k miles in these 4 years
So i completely feel your pain and frustration
Tough break. Hang in there.
Time for plan F
I thought about those rockers when I saw you install them and thought to myself please don't use them. I have a set in my 66 comet and they are noisy cheap junk. My mustang 347 has a good set of rockers and is quite and runs like a top. I have now decided the comet gets new rockers. We appreciate your efforts. That is real life hot rodding.
Yup now I know why they were on sale
Damn Russ, that just broke my heart man! I am so sorry that girl is giving you the fits. I know this may not be what you want to hear, but she may be telling you in her own way that something worse might have happened had you gotten there in her.
Just take a deep breath, regroup, and a new plan will come to you. Best of luck, man!
Definitely something was pushing against it. Working on a backup plan now
Jeez Russ, it's like I'm having deja vu, i know exactly how you feel. Keep on buddy. Respect!
Time to make a backup plan
Sorry for your run of bad luck mechanically. Hang in there, don’t let it get you down.
It happens that way sometimes, just have to step back and reevaluate things
I was holding my breath when you were on your test run. I feel your disappointment brother. Your spirit is far more valuable than this particular outcome.
I was too I've gave it ever chance
Wow, Russ, I feel your pain. You certainly have the utmost respect from all of your followers. I give you 101 out of 100 for effort. I'm looking forward to Wednesday's update to see where you end up heading with this. Every best wish, Steve (New Zealand).
Thanks Steve, I'm working on backup plan F now
So sorry to hear this brother,. I'm not sure what to say man, I know it's frustrating!
Nothing can change what happened, But I'm sure sick of these junk parts
@HotRodGuyGarage Yes sir!
Russ that's heart breaking, but I love the way you don't give up, Wednesday a new video, shows your not going to let this shout you down 2 steps forward 5 steps backwards but you keep going. Really like this context as well as the Mustang, well keep groovy, peace out patience, you have shown it to us before you can still show it now
I'm working on plan F at this point, hopefully things will go well from here
Prayers out for plan F,and good luck
This makes my problems right now seem small. From watching your videos I know you will come out on the other side.
I'm definitely not going to let it stop me!
I feel for you. Take a step back, take a deep breath, even if you don't have a car to take to the races you gave it your best effort. These things happen to us all. You will get it figured out. We will keep watching your videos. I learn something every time I watch one.👍
That's the plan, working on the backup plan now, I'm glad you're learning things from the videos it makes them worth doing
Ooo. Bad news about the heads. Look at the plus side; this didn't happen on the way to the event. Thx for sharing this. Makes me weary if changing cam , springs and rockers to non stock versions.
The old saying goes if it ain't broke don't fix it 😆
Hang in there ..... new sub
Thank you, I will and welcome to the channel
Sorry to see and hear about this.
Bad things happen to good people.
I can appreciate all your hard work and effort.
Believe me I understand what you are going through.
I know that you can fix this, probably not in time for NNN.
Better this happens now instead of going to NNN and scattering the Torino on the track.
At least it is not blown up.
Take care, wishing you the best.👍🇺🇸👍
May I ask what your name is?
I'm working on getting my SVO up and going for the trip at this point. I'm definitely still going just not how I wanted to. My name is Russ
@@HotRodGuyGarage HI Russ, nice to meet you.
Good luck fixing the SVO.
I'll be watching.
Have a good evening. 👍
Thanks I need all the luck I can get at this point. Have a good evening yourself also
Man. That was brutal. I was going to say, yay, it didn’t drop a valve and really go bad. But those needle bearings. Ouch. This too shall pass, man.
My thoughts exactly
Man that sucks , I been there before with a 383 stroker that always had problem leaking coolant about every 2 months it would either leak out of the new water pump or the intake gasket the one day it stared to run hot on only the passenger side of the block figured it blew a head gasket pulled the heads found a pin hole in #6 cylinder wall after all that screwing around what a kick in the balls
That's rough
So sorry to hear.
Thanks for the visit
The frustration is real, I've been there. You look like you wanted to cry, but you took it like a champ.
Absolutely
Perseverance. continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. No matter what happens, no one can ever say you gave up.
I'm definitely not letting it take me down without a fight
I have those same rockers. Guess I'm doing an inspection this evening.
Yup
Maybe some motorheads near you will step up..m
It's definitely been rough so far!
I feel your pain
It happens sometimes, must be a reason
Wow, sounds incredible after you changed the springs 😮
Someone give this man a motor ! He deserves it!
I'll get it fixed may just take a while
I feel bad for you MAINLY because I have been there. I live about 30 minutes from Maple Grove raceway and have on occasion thrashed for a couple weeks to make a race only to kicked in jewels by bad parts. Sorry
"JEWELS"👈👀🤔😅😂🤣😆
I try to avoid anything from comp nowdays and should had just spent the extra money
I guess this is one istance it's not FIRST ON RACE DAY.!! Hope you can get the turbo back in and get it sorted out.
I'm definitely stepping back and rethinking things at this point
It's character building. You will look back and laugh at this ( in about 20 years time)
Probably won't be here in 20 but that's a problem for another day
Drive a guy to drink!! lol sorry to hear this.
Drive a man to take a long walk of a short peir
Man I feel your pain. After having to cope with that nasty Mustang, you deserve a break on this one. Sorry man.
Absolutely
That's a big downer. Can't wait to see what you decide to do. Years ago, I changed my heads, and 3 of the new rockers failed in the bearing department. I bent a valve at 6000 rpms and left the engine partially torn down for 15 years. About 7 years ago, I got it fixed. I still have those rockers in a bag hoping I can fix them.
Absolutely this one may sit 15 years at this point
@HotRodGuyGarage I'd take a break and get back to the turbo setup. Hope to see you there at NNN.
Bummer buddy. 😢I hate that for you.
It happens usually at the worst time
That is sooo frustrating. I can't believe how difficult that car has been !
Absolutely
I’m sorry to see how the video ended; stay strong. Hopefully some help will come your way. I feel you deserve some help ❤. You are an asset to the car community.
I've just got to rethink the plans for the car at this point I think
Blood and sweat. It's finally done it's not right. Start over
Yup
So sorry to hear this, I know you’ve been working you butt off to get the car ready, at this point I don’t think anyone could blame you for throwing in the towel. 😤
I wish I could explain how much I've worked trying to get it done
Been there! Rollers shouldn't make it through screen. Count the needles and hope for the best. I flushed mine out rather easily. Do you have a magnetic oil plug? I had Scorpions and they blew apart. The needles all went to the bottom of the pan and came out with the magnetic plug. Those Comp rockers are garbage! Install the stamp steel rockers to get by. Test a needle in a screen similar to the one in the car and see if it can filter through. Those needles are to hard to grind up. My guess is the metalic in the oil is the aluminum from the rocker. Replace oil and rockers and see what you get! Still have time! Worth a shot!
In definitely going to clean it out and reevaluate things from there
@@HotRodGuyGarage My guess is inner spring may be binding causing the rocker failure. Removing them for now may work but like you said not right. To do it right need to know the numbers. What is part number of spring and what is installed height? Guessing 1.800 ish. I may have that same spring here and could check the seat pressure if you haven't already and check spring bind.
You’re an inspiration sir
Thank you
I like your cat daisy ❤
She's a great cat
Wow, ... bummer man. I know you will overcome and grow from this.
Onward and forward!
That's a real bummer, to put one's heart and soul (not to mention money) into a project and it all goes wrong. I know you won't give up though it seems like it's time to step back and ponder things.
Definitely time to step back and reevaluate things
man that is heartbreaking . rough turn of luck for sure
Absolutely
That's terrible. You are such a hard worker, do such good work, and you can't do anything about what you didn't make yourself. Maybe Daisey can show you what car to take I hope.
She gave her seal of approval to backup plan F today so I hope it goes well
Wow man im so sorry about all your bad luck . Love the car it is 1 killer car . Did you do the paint job ? very very nice .
This is the only car I own that I didn't paint this time. I was planning a color change back to how it was previously but spent every dime I'd saved to respray it
Sorry man dang 😊
It happens sometimes
@@HotRodGuyGarage 🥂
Me personally i would forget about this motor as it was only going to stay in the car for this race and it's done nothing but beat you up and rob you of money, focus your money and energy on your tried and tested 6 cylinder. There will be many more races. All the best from one of your subscribers.
I'm definitely going to sit down and think hard about how to proceed forward from here
In I never heard of rockers with needle bearings in them. Live and learn.
It's pretty common in full roller rockers
Hold your head high . You have done the best at the time when some engines put your heart and soul in to it with no luck .
I just need to rethink the plans for the car
We just hope to see you in Sikeston. Bring your daily and come hang out :) FWIW, I was so swamped when you brought the Geo last year that I didn't really even get to look at it. I wouldn't mind seeing it come back, but it's all up to you. Like I said, if you don't want to turn another wrench and show up in your daily driver, that is totally fine. See you soon!
I'll be there John for sure. I really wanted to bring the torino this year but it just isn't happening. I'd thought about bringing the geo back but I've not driven it maybe 4-5 times since I came back last year. Working on plan F now which is my SVO
@@HotRodGuyGarageit’s all good. Looking forward to seeing everyone 👍🏼
Same here can't wait to see everyone again this year
I know your pain! So much time, money, and effort, and it all goes to crap.
I used to race motorcycles, and my dream was to race at Daytona. I worked my ass off, borrowed money, and fangled a transport to get the bike from New Mexico to Florida. Doing one last test day here, I seized the crank. The transport was leaving that day so I loaded up the bike and off it went. I called my crank builder to get one built and sent to Florida. I did a thrash in my cousins garage to replace the crank and got the bike running. Finally, I got to the track and got 3 practice laps in before the new crank ate a bearing. That was a long weekend. All in all, it was a 5000.00 loss for the whole fiasco...
It definitely gets rough sometimes all you can do is push through the best you can
Brother, i wont reveal my location too specifically, but the Atlanta summit is only 15 minutes from my house. Im so very lucky that they built one in my parts. :) Update: so i wrote my first post before i finished watching the whole vid. Brother i know the feeling on pouring money into something and it just keeps fighting you. Im guessing the best plan i can think of is to located some complete heads and do a quick switcharoony. Get the motor running as smooth as you can and send it. Good luck brother, if ya cant race it then just drive your green one and join the boys over there. :)
It's definitely nice to have one within a half days drive, it would be awesome to be around 15min away! Other then the traffic 😆
This seems like a sign that you shouldn't take that car to the races...I was wanting to see it ripping up the track, I just hope something works out for you.
You're getting that vibe as well...........till now, I kept my yap shut.
I've had it for a while now
Man I'm sorry, I feel your pain. Sleep on it and see how you feel in the morning
I'm definitely going to have to rethink it's plans from here
Quality of parts these days is terrible. I wonder how the stock style Ford rockers would have held up with a big cam. The needle bearings may gotten through the pump pickup to have wrecked the oil pump, but they won't get through the filter to the bearings. Low oil pressure, on the other hand from a bad pump can for sure cause problems.
Absolutely horrible quality nowdays
I'm so sorry Russ I know how hard it is to bust your ass and soak every penny you have into a project and have it kick your ass
Absolutely
Oh brother
Absolutely
I just watched this video. I’m so sorry my friend.
I tried my best!
you need to "endevor to persevere" ...
It seems that way
Sorry about your bad luck.. I have been a mechanic for 55 years and I can attest to problems that occur when one modification can affect other parts. Try not to get discouraged and stay with it! (after a cooling off period of course! TMD
It happens, just need to step back and rethink things for sure
That stinks when it rains it pours. You figure something out.
Plan c,d,e,f in process
@@HotRodGuyGarage I hope you have some better luck
I feel bad for you, almost heartbroken over this motor taking a dump. Head up, tomorrow is another day.
Just have to step back and rethink things
I'm not sure what to say. So sick and tired of the half-assed parts and lack of installation instructions that these greedy companies that charge you your first born for. It isn't right. I will never buy anything from that company after seeing this happen with their products over and over again on RUclips. Sending healing thoughts and positive vibes for the future.
The quality of stuff is on a rapid decline
I would not call it giving up. You gave it your all and the cards were not in your favor. Keep digging!
I'm onto backup plan F at this point definitely not going down without a fight
Murphy's strikes again. yiks!
Every time
You take your sweet time, and go through the whole engine without worrying about blowing any extra dimes. You are a 385 Rock Star. This is what happens with roller rockers and four grove valve retainers. I'm a 335 guy, I learned about the solid lifter Cleveland 2.19/1.79 4V valve system we share, and how it doesn't suffer fools gladly, from the Australian Brad Girdwoods Speed Shop in 1988. And I told my friends, as an 18 year old back then...only one way to do it. The Right Way. My respect and appreciation from you sharing. 🥝✔️💪🇺🇲😁🫡
I'd like to give this one a chance, Im not the biggest 335 fan as they lack the torque the 385 spits out effortlessly but I seen potential just got to get it to be happy and not break stuff
Comp Cams needs to just close the doors! NOTHING they make is worth a #@$@% anymore! And they sure as hell won't stand behind ANY of it!
I'll hand it to ya, you are certainly a fighter and you do not give up easily. Lots of risk with the 6cyl build but you proved many wrong and set the bar really high there.
Sorry Russ, it sucks. Been following this adventure since you pulled the 1st engine out. However, it's made for some great content and growth! I say just take the old reliable Torino and just go have fun and hang out. Shoot for the race next year.
Or you can try and flush the debris down into the pan, drop the pan, pull the pump and pickup for a new one or just clean them out. The filter, if it's worth a hill of beans, would have caught anything before it gets pushed into the bearings. So really the oil pump would have took the brunt of anything if the needle bearings didn't stay on the bottom of the pan.
I've ran some raunchy junk in my days, and have had good albeit lucky success, but it also came with out much choice.
Look up Comp Cams and SB Chevy flat tappet cam/lifter failures; I cringed.....
@@piercehawke8021 yep. Its been a serious issue and it's one many cam manufacturers have been fighting since flat tappet casings productions moved overseas. Unfortunately I don't even know IF anyone makes any stateside anymore. But like with Russ, I've also seen rocker arm failures becoming more common too. Comp use to be a premiere brand, but it's obvious bean counters have been getting involved.
Thanks Oly, I'll dig back into it when I get back and figure out what I need to move forward
That sucks fella.. Hope it gets better for you killer.
I hope so also
Before you pull the motor remove the oil pan and get all the needle bearings you can find hopefully you’ll get lucky and find them all. There’s a set number of them so you can count to see if they’re all retrieved
That's the plan!
Sometimes you eat the bear
Sometimes the bear eats you
Absolutely
Really sad mate, that car has fought you all the way.
Absolutely it has a history of fighting but this has been over excessive
Those rockers are only rated for .550 lift. I had a set come apart on me using a comp 282 cam.
Been nice to had know that! Cheap junk then
Man that really sucks. Gotta say though, that is one sweet looking Torino. I thought the Cobra came with a 429SCJ? Sorry if you covered that in another video.
@@ohioken1 it's a clone , I've had a few 429-460 in it over the years
@@HotRodGuyGarageyeah I hadn’t had a chance to look back on your old videos. I stumbled by your channel when you started working on the 65 Hack Mustang and have been following since. Next I’m gonna go back and watch the Torino vids. Back in 75 my brother had a 70 Torino Cobra with the 429 and. 4 speed. She was pretty fast as I remember.
@@ohioken1 awesome welcome to the channel.
It’s an absolute piss off that new rockers you paid good $ for have ended up causing so much trouble. I would be pulling the engine and dropping it on the foot of the people that now need to rebuild it from top to bottom and guarantee it! Sorry things have gotten to this after all your effort, you deserve so much better!!
I'll be lucky to get the money back for the rockers probably
@@HotRodGuyGarage I’m in NZ myself and I already know what would happen if those rockers were mine. They would accuse me of incorrect installation and tell me I should have paid a professional…. So I’m guessing things aren’t much better there? Be sure to let us all know where and who if they treat you badly so we can be aware of snakes. As for the LS yes gm stole many things from fords bullet proof 427 but why not when those ford fellas got it so very right. Don’t suppose you have a nice ed.pink built cammer laying around you could raise some hell then Russ🤔🤫
Judging about how many guys are having catastrophic problems with their flat tappet name brand cams in their Chevy 350's; parts quality seems to have gone down in recent years.
There is no quality part nowdays I'm about positive
Russ, i am so sorry. I can hear it in your voice how drained, upset you are. I know the feeling. I was trying to sell a vehicle, I thrashed to get it done for a potential buyer. He picked it apart and then said I'm gonna have to pass. I know its not the same but you bust your behind, put in the work only to get the carpet ripped out from under you. Take some time off, relax and breathe. You'll feel better with a clear head.
I'm definitely going to step back and rethink the path
@@HotRodGuyGarage You got this!!!
Feel your pain . Its like a Soap opera, finish one thing which only leads to another problem. Wo rking on my own soap opera. Planed on 7 months, 15 months later, after doing brakes replacing with new developed leaks, had to do some rewiring, developed a direct short in an unrelated circuit, finally get the engine run after swaping out two other carbs, only to have it run like a washing machine and cant control the idle with smoke coming out the right tailpipe. These are only the highlights. Or is it lowlights? Keep at it you will find a solution.
Sometimes you just have to step back and rethink the path your on I think
first thing to do is get rid of those junk ass comp rockers. go to Harlin Sharp rockers an never look back. Then pull the intake an flush all the needle baring's into the oil pan remove oil pan an oil pump an clean everything take the oil pump apart an get anything in there out. then put it back together. it sounds like a lot of work, because it is, but its the best way to not spend money at a machine shop. I had to do this twice to two different motors 351c an a 460 . should take about 2 days. quicker if you have help. I did mine both times in a day, I mean all day into the night but got it done...... you wont go wrong with Harlin Sharp rockers.
I knew better then to buy comp junk , would had been better off with china no name rockers
That truly bites, I feel for you. What a disappointment for your hard work and money getting the car ready. 😑 So it was a bad prior rebuild for the heads that bit you. Sorry, man.
I wouldn't say bad, just very old school and probably for a flat tappet cam instead of the solid roller. But definitely needs to be addressed
Man. That blows. You are the second person I watch that is having all kinds of bad luck. Hope you figure it out.
It happens sometimes, but wish it would ease up a little
Yeah it's heart breaking. Stick the motor from the green one in.
I've definitely entertained it at this point
Those needle bearings shouldn’t get by the oil pickup screen !!!
I feel bad for you. The quality of parts are not there. I but new parts and no good. Nice car. I like your determination to get er done.
Thanks, the quality of stuff has went downhill
Sorry Russ but that LS sticker in the front window of your other Torino makes me throw up a little every time I see it, but it’s just my thing that pet hate I’ve had all my life when I see beautiful cars with enemy dna . I wonder if that could be why your other ford engines refused to perform in protest of the brother Torino running that gm thing… karma… idk.
Bad thing is the green car is the best running most reliable car I own. I don't see it as a gm platform it has skirted side bolted mains like a 427 FE and a Windsor valve train and head layout
@@HotRodGuyGarage I used to joke when GM brought out the LSx family for 1997 that they rooted around in Ford's scrap pile and, used 351W tooling...
Chinese parts?
Yup comp cams
If those rockers can lose all the needle bearing out of the rockers then they we’re junk when they we’re brand new bad design (Wow)Can’t wait to see what you decide to do. (A teardown to get all the needle bearings out and try to do it right)I don’t think you are the hope and pray person)
There definitely junk, I'm debating how to go forward from here
Yep never straight forward mate, don’t believe roller rockers do anything whatsoever but if you lack the required machining to accept recommend valve springs that could be a problem, bent pushrod is often a sign that you haven’t got it right… if your lucky, you have a sump full of roller bearings, get’s worse I have everything “comp cam” under my rocker covers 😅 flat tappet & solid lifters, don’t think it’s your parts more incorrect set up 👍
When I say not right, it's more of a difference in opinion of how I would had had things done. Comp used to be good quality before they started offshore sourcing everything older stuff is good new is hit and miss. After doing some research these rocker's are known to spit out the bearings :( guess that's why they were on sale
Sorry things are not working out well. Try to remember that this too will pass
Absolutely
Ouch! Hate that for you.
It happens, may just take a while to fix at this point
💔😞
Absolutely
Wow, what a let down. It saddens me to think of the pure junk these companies put out these days. There has always been some junk made it out to the general public, but the more of these RUclips videos I watch, the more I see it really doesn't matter what brand you drive. Everyone seems to be in the same boat.
Absolutely it's a epidemic of poor quality
