As you get older you tend to get teary and choke-up more. Damn this song . . .
This is the type of music that consciousness artists of 60's and 70's would pen.
Let's hope it continues and listen to more music that is relevant and not mindless
This song was used in a federal lawsuit in Colorado Springs.. This song is the truth.
This song will unfortunately not be irrelevant for a long long time
Honestly reading through the comments it's just a widely spaced thing of "this is relevant again" and it's hard to keep track of what tragedies everyone is referencing. ACAB.
Now that's a song with 3 chords and the TRUTH.
Well Done DBT!
I cried when I saw them perform this live about 3 years ago. They had a black lives matter poster. Good ole boys who get it! Love y'all.
Truer words, never have been uttered.
Miss them live, right about now, ya know?
One day in the future, till then...
Memories of tears, smiles and laughter
Thank you for commenting. Meant a lot. Ya dig?😊
Art is not always pretty. Sometimes it provokes. Patterson Hood is a true artist and should be respected for asking the question. Good stuff Patterson.
Don't leave out Mike Coley one without the other would be great but together totally awesome! My personal favorite is Cooley but I love the songs of both.
Fighting everyday for pride of being HUMAN!
I found the DBT through Jason Isbell. I heard this song for the first time about two months ago. It took about 5 or 6 plays before I could not cry when I heard the lyric "with a pocket full of skittles". I love Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley for writing the songs that they do; and for and for this band!!! Thank You!!! :-)
Jason found Jason Isbell through the DBT
It's now 2021 and this is as relevant now as when this was published.
Now it 2022 & very much still is & I believe will continue to be until one day enough of us stand up with a foot down.
I'd never heard of these guys 5 minutes ago...I'm a fan already. Good on ya for speaking the truth.
I just want to say thank you to the DBT fans ( the people commenting on here ) . Before i started reading the comments i truly thought that they were going to go the other way . Humanity is not dead and you guys give me hope that one day we won't have to deal with racism and bigotry . Peace !!! ✌
I have no words for how much I love this band, their sound and their social conscience.
Well this feels even more relevant this week.
krisannecombs they nailed it.
Still feeling strong today.
Maybe even more.
Mood
Not every day some good ol' boys from Alabama write a protest song about Trayvon Martin. DBT, you guys rock! Much love!
Its kinda more towards all the Blacks that have been gunned down. By there own community and by the whites.
yeah man..
Ignorance is bliss.
google Larry Elder about cops murdering blacks. Spread it to your friends cuz time is short before something really bad happens.
Trayvon. *BANG* Trayvoff.
Guess it means that you ain't black. (and I don't care that Larry Elder is.)
I'm an old lady who heard this on the radio while driving - new fan. powerful.
Where do you live that they play DBT on the radio? I need to be your neighbor.
They have so many great songs I'm glad that you discovered them
@@jamescain9550 A friend on the DCC net introduced me to them in '01 and have been a fan of theirs ever since(just see my playlist's)....
Public radio
Holy shit. How this song isnt everywhere right now is a mystery to me....love me some DBT!
Thank you Drive by truckers. Good song. There's a lot of hate in the world and people want it to be swept under the rug.
This song was heartbreaking when it came out. The fact that it's still relevant 3 years later makes me wonder.
Its 4 years of relevancy and its sad
It's been almost 6 years since August 2016 when this was released and today, May 17th 2022, and I'm sorry to say that this is still as relevant as ever, if not more so.
We just had a racist white 18yr old kid kill 10 black people in a grocery store this past weekend because he was worried about the "white replacement theory" being spread by Republicans. Our nation is a travesty.
It's still relevant 6 years later I'm afraid.
GREAT SONG GUYS! IT CAN'T BE EASY TO PLAY THIS LIVE, ESPECIALLY IN THE SOUTH, SO STAY STRONG AND KEEP ON TRUCKIN...
I heard half the audience walked out when they played this in San Luis Obispo (just north of Santa Barbara). It's more than just mainly the South. Southern California too. Like they say, it's everywhere.
As a Minneapolitan for 6 decades, and one who has Quixotically tried to make things right, this song expresses the hopes and despairs of a distraught city/nation. We all feel this.
Been preaching peace and respect eachother for 20 years 😪. So sad.
Didn't mnps reinstate their police force after the heat was off them? You could at least bitch a lot.
This song makes me cry. Black lives matter.
If you don't tear up when listening to this, your soul is dead.
@@dilligaf2818 Says the white guy.
@@dilligaf2818 But it's Black lives that are endangered by police behavior right now so ALM is unhelpful bullshit at the moment.
@James Zell For 18 years I lived smack in the middle of a predominantly black neighborhood. You lose.

Dear Drive by Truckers, even if you lost a few fans you've definitely gained a few!
Much love from Australia
Everytime they lose fans they gain 5 more that appreciate these white guys doin hella amazing ass shit. This indigenous chic sends much love and prayers to these fellow Americans.
This is great DBT and I'm sad i'm the first here to say it. DBT is one of the few bands who chose to make music that means something to them instead of chasing the dollar. Preach brotha
Thanks no thanks
It didn't used to be that way, but you're right.
bullshit, you ever buy one of their great albums
There are many many bands that do that, not just the sainted DBT
There's a lot of bands out there like that, just hard to find because they aren't popular.
I'm glad they put the lyric on screen, because this band is all about the message that needs to be heard.
New fan after hearing the song on All Songs Considered. SO powerful, made me start tearing up on the tram to work.
Just heard this today, I have rarely heard such concise thought in a song. 'pocket full of skittles' broke my heart too!
The first side is great. The second side might just be their finest work. I look forward to the next album.
This song is so much more than itself. Congrats DBT!
From your studio to God's ears. Well done!
"Pocket full of skittles" broke my heart
Mine, too.
I agree
The whole song breaks my heart. I remember reading about Mike Brown the day it happened at work at an ice cream shop about twenty minutes away and crying, and I remember how we lined the street with candles the next night, and I remember the protests and and how unjust it all was.
😂😂😂
Exactly when the tears hit
Amazing and I’m I fan who somehow missed this. Boy is this needed now
Alabam--you got the weight on your shoulders---be proud you are carrying it so bravely--i'm sure ole Neil would be proud of your courage as we all are --rock on !
Courage, honesty, absence of hype. What shocking qualities in the context of today's music!
Thanks DBT , true representative of the new south
DBT yet another great album and story from the good ole boys from Alabama. Cheers!
This song is more powerful to me than ever.
I have listened to this song a lot the last few days....time for the world to change...
This song made me cry, very powerful. 💙
I am in love with this song and with the entire album. This might be my favourite album of 2016, and there's been some great ones.
I love this song. It says so much of what I want to say about prejudice and ignorance, contrasted with our achievements. It makes me want to weep angry tears.
Gets me everytime,he is amazing and truthful....whether people like it or not...
Great song, powerful commentary from one of their best albums.
I love it. Much love for people that have the ability to look at things from a compassionate heart
My HEART BREAKS EVERYDAY! PLEASE "STOP"!
Great song by a great band. There aren't many bands with the guts to put out music this real and honest knowing that it is likely to result in losing many fans.
Thanks guys. I was very moved. A lot of people just don't want to face reality or how angry towards others they really are for no reason. Congratulations guys and continued success to you.
Thank you for writing this. Peace~
Time to blast this.
I'm not obviously part of their demographic, but this is an incredible song. Maybe one of the best I've heard in a very long time. It's very moving. I hope millions of people get to hear it.
Demographic, shemographic. If you're human, you're part of the DBT demographic.
Hopefully....millions won't vote for hate in 2020.
If you like it then it's for you. Music is universal.
@@johnlindsay5214
Thankfully, hate officially lost this election. However, it is rather disturbing how many people actually did vote for it.
incredible writing-absolutly moving. Laid to rest with a pocketful of Skittles-God, if that does not choke you up?
I'm not exactly a bleeding heart liberal, but I can stand behind this.
Song of the year by a ( country ) mile. Brilliant.
The more I listen, the more this song sticks in my head...and my heart. Such a bold move to put out something they believe in knowing likely that a portion of the fan base will resist. As to the comment that their other political songs were more nuanced, based on the reaction of the "fans" on their facebook page being so outraged at a political song, those fans apparently never caught the nuance. Sometimes it's best to just say it plain and clear.
You sound like a thoughtful guy. Our differences show how art can be viewed so differently depending on the eyes and ears of the beholder. I think the song is deep. Deep in the sense that it challenges us to look at this situation not from whatever pre-existing notion of white-black-police-protest, etc. view one might traditionally hold. "We want our truths all fair and balanced as long as our notions lie within it". He says don't look to him for answers because he doesn't know what it means. He is challenging each one of us to take another look at the issue from a different place. A different perspective. "What is the point of post racial when old prejudices remain". By some of the reactions here and dozens on the DBT Facebook page, it appears certain fans aren't comfortable with putting themselves in the place of the opposite view. That's fine. This song as exposed that a deep divide remains. I think that is deep as hell. Peace.
Ha ha u know nothing of music and political activism....
But better yet, it'll REALLY stick with the true DBT fans like us!
shallow song? WTF are you listening to? They are asking what it all means...not preaching or giving solutions for fuck sake. Our next president, dipshit Don the Con sure thinks politics is plain, clear and simple.
Fuck you Internet tough guy wanna be.
And today i hear a 13 year old caught n then shot. Round n round we go. Hiw long before this track is a footnote in history? Lost for words amongst tears.
one word, Powerful
Three words: DRIVE BY TRUCKERS
Amazing song/music/lyrics/album. One of the best tracks I've ever heard. keep the truth rolling guys.
Truth AND talented. What some see as a threat.
Joan Baez was hated by many, too, for taking a stand. So was Dr. King. So was Peter, Paul, and Mary. God bless the Truckers for having the guts to go beyond today's vacuous pop.
Who is hated? All I see here is sycophancy for the DBTs.
Wow ! Truth with a Southern accent. Love it!
Rest in Peace Trayvon
This is one of the most punk songs released this decade. Along with Ramon Casiano.
This song needs SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE WORLD!!!
Thank you for this protest song, it's extremely meaningful.
I live in Macomb Illinois. Small town of 20,000. 2 weeks ago city police were called to a domestic dispute. A man stabbed a woman and when police came in he used a 5 year old boy as a shield. Police shot and killed them both. They both were black. Never would have happened if they were white. We still have no answers why the officer took the shot. This song is helping me cope with it.
thank you for voicing not only yours but other people's opinions.
Best band in the land!!!!
Too soon to move it to #1 on the "Albums that matter" list ?
You can't be serious.
What a great song.
for those saying one-dimensional, one-sided: how about we give the whole album a listen before really inferring too much. They've shown time and time again the ability to craft layered albums. It's a piece of a puzzle, not the whole thing
DBT didn't grow balls they always had them. and God bless them for it!
An instant classic. Hard to pull this kind of thing off.
Great song/album/band/writers...
Discovered you guys on NPR Little Desk Concerts. Mind blown! You've won over a new fan, especially with this more reflective album. This song in particular recalls a soulful Springsteen. Excellent music, guys!
This is such a beautiful song. Just heard about this band on a podcast and this is the first song I've heard and I can already confidently say I'm a fan. It's refreshing to see some good ole country boys like myself who also have a slightly different mindset then what society portrays us as having. Keep up the good work fellas!
Very moved. Love this
Beautiful poetry with insightful inspiration. Thank you and keep on with your creative provocative social commentary. So needed.
Incredible job, guys.
DBT is one of those courageous bands, very Southern, but unafraid to offer insightful criticism to America. I saw them in Oxford MS and Mike Cooley told some idiot to put away his Rebel flag or he would shove it up his ass. ONLY a brave Southerner can get away with that. Typically, those would be fightin’ words in my neck of the woods.. I’ve seen them five or six times since then, and met most of the band, in Florence AL. I’m a fan. Good people, with a message.
Ahhh... I've seen this band many, many times and I can totally picture Cooleydoing/saying that!
LADY DBTs FOREVER!
(Thanks for the awesome comments. Great DBT story.!!!)
Thanks for sharing this. Just great. Patterson and Cooley are a gift to our nation. Cooley: “It’s all about consistently holding bullshit up to light of reason.”
Social commentary no doubt. Sick of it.
Drive-By Truckers are Righteous, always have been. If you’re Righteous, you must pick a side. This is them picking a side. And they’re picking the right side. I was driving with an African-American friend in 2005, he was in the passenger seat of my car. We had been in a small town outside of Omaha, visiting a friend. We stopped at a store and headed toward Omaha. A few miles out of town, a cop stops me. He asked for my ID, and my passenger’s ID, which I have never had happen. He took our ID’s, and came back around 10 minutes later, and said, “Have a good day.” No ticket. No warning. As we were driving away, my friend said: “He stopped us because I’m black. He took my ID, and checked for warrants and/or drug convictions. Since I have no warrants or drug convictions, he let us go.” I wasn’t speeding or driving erratically. It was around noon on a Saturday, beautiful weather, in the summer. This is what African-Americans face all the time: It’s a presumption of guilt. So I think we need more to do, because that was 2005, and it still obviously happens today.
Patterson Hood's Op Ed on NPR's website brought me here. Great song, wish that it wasn't needed... I think we all need to take a long look at ourselves and rethink things. Change is what is needed, but will it happen this time? God, I hope so!
Great message and music
LOVE THIS !!!!!!
You guys are amazing as always
So good. 🙋❤🖤❤
David, Thank you for that!
A song for our time
DBT Doing what the fuck they DO! Thank you for keeping on, brothers!
Great lyrics! Best song I've heard in a while!
Big league tune! Not a fan but lyrics caught my damn attention when it came up on spotify's radar playlist.
Listen to more of DBT's stuff - they've always been big on catching people's attention!
This is amazing.
In fact it's happened here
And it happened where you're sitting
Wherever that might be
And it happened last weekend
And it will happen again next week
#DuanteWright 4.11.2021 MN
Man this song aged well.
Looking forward to the next social commentary by this great rock n roll band.
"First step in solving a problem is recognizing there is one."
Yeah and finally you end up without a father and a government that does care as long as your unborn but doesn't care at all after. Great!
I can almost smell the "positive male influence" of republicans. I'm sure Barron Trump will be a respectful human beeing one day, given his most respectful father (he has the worlds greatest respect! Believe me!)
So, you actually want to discuss the real issues or do you just want to keep blaming Obama and the democrats for every bad thing that ever came to you?
Redd Pille Zimmerman was not “Authority”. He was the true “thug”
DBT are the fucking realest, keep preaching goodness and truth you guys
Unfortunately, this song will be relevant 100 hears from now.
Outstanding! I've only known the DBT songs by Jason Isbell and now I'm digging all of it.
This made me cry...
Beautiful song
Always thought the beginning of this sounded like the Faces "Ooh La La". Brilliant song.
there are two sides to every story and we can't depend entirely on private videotapes.
