Maybe you might lose some 'fans' over this statement, but you just won at least one new fan here in Europe! It takes more backbone to recognize and tell the truth than it does to bow to the expectations of others and tow the line. Damned good job, love the songwriting!
When did he mention Terrence? By his words hes saying cops are hunting down black people and he says if you dont understand then you aint black. hey bud you're not black either. Obama is president and now you can choose where you eat. Obama didnt fix civil rights! He has however made racial tension the worst in 40yrs.
He doesn't mention Terrence because that happened THIS WEEK. Different day, same story. But you want to say id's a false narrative, and pretend it doesn't happen at all. Also, pay attention to the lyrics. That line about Obama winning doesn't say he fixed civil rights unless you listen with the comprehension of a kindergartner.
The fact the so many standing behind republican, conservative America are incensed by this 6 minute piece of pop music means that this 6 minute piece of pop music has done its job.
Martyn Hughes I don't necessarily have a definition to give you but if you go look at what pop music is today you have folks like Ed Sheeran, the Chainsmokers, Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, the list goes on... DBT is one of the farthest things from pop music. They are a southern rock punk band.
Josh Davis which is pop music. Pop music isn't just attractive people playing shite on radio 1. It's anything "popular" and to some degree "martketed" to the west. There's no shame in bands reaching a wide audience. Especially when they have something to say other than "club, girl, club club drink"
nc51heel it is too bad there is so much hate. But I, being a huge fan of this band and the music style, am terribly disappointed. They don't have any different knowledge of how things went down. They shouldn't try to force feed idealistic opinions on the rest of us
Wow.Patterson, I applaud the strong statement you are making here. You will lose fans over this song (not me). It's very bold to take that kind of risk to say something you believe. Kudos to you.
Dave Lowery no, don’t think so. I don’t think that there is a systemic genocide against black young men. I think there have been a dozen or so very tragic incidents, and a handful of out and out felonies by police officers, but not a genocide. That would look more like dozens killed every week. However, I respect everyone’s right to voice an opinion, and I sure do like DBT.
@@badbadmanly903 Nobody is calling it a genocide, that's giving them way too much credit. They're is systemic problems, but it's not like there's a genocide.
The intent of the message is worthy. The music is, well, let's just say the pedigree is what I remember. But then I couldn't make a living at it. Best to you, son of a Legend. May you live long and prosper.
First heard this reviewed on CBC Radio 1 the other day. Very insightful lyrics. Wonderful musicians and arrangement. My first introduction to this band. This should be a top 10 record. Everyone should hear it and have the opportunity to understand the deep underlying lyrics and truly bright integration of a thoughtful vocal, melody and musicianship. You have a new fan.
Just discovered this song on local radio station 88.5 KCSN. Very catchy with spot on lyrics and I'm normally not a fan of the country music genre. But I could imagine Dylan writing and performing this as well.
Gonna listen to this on repeat this election day. Also, I know the lyrics are the big focus in this one, but can I just say how well all the music blends. Love the tuned down acoustic, and the electric solo is exactly what the song needs, the organ, drums... it all comes together really well, musically.
I am now searching for the impossible. A bad dbt track. Heard every lp and every one is killer. Please play uk again so i can pay respect to finest band have heard. Ever.
I went to see these guys in Amsterdam because of this song and My Sweet Annette, but sadly neither were on the set-list. I was really bummed out. Maybe next time.
This song hit me hard. Great tune. Here are the lyrics He was running down the street when they shot him in his tracks About the only thing agreed upon is he ain't coming back There won't be any trial so the air it won't be cleared There's just two sides calling names out of anger and of fear If you say it wasn't racial when they shot him in his tracks Well, I guess that means that you ain't black, it means that you ain't black I mean Barack Obama won and you can choose where to eat But you don't see too many white kids lying bleeding on the street In some town in Missouri but it could be anywhere It could be right here on Ruth Street, in fact it's happened here And it happened where you're sitting, wherever that might be And it happened last weekend and it will happen again next week And when they turned him over, they were surprised there was no gun I mean, he must have done something, or else why would he have run And they'll spin it for the anchors on the television screen So we can shrug and let it happen without asking what it means What it means What it means Then I guess there was protesting and some looting in some stores And someone was reminded that they ain't called colored folks no more I mean we try to be politically correct when we call names But what's the point of post-racial when old prejudices remains? And that guy who killed that kid down in Florida standing ground Is free to beat up on his girlfriend and wave his brand new gun around While some kid is dead and buried and laying in the ground With a pocket full of Skittles What it means What it means Astrophysics at our fingertips and we're standing at the summit And some man with a joystick lands a rocket on a comet We're living in an age where limitations are forgotten The outer edges move and dazzle us but the core is something rotten And we're standing at the precipice of prejudice and fear We trust science just as long as it tells us what we want to hear We want our truths all fair and balanced as long as our notions lie within it There's no sunlight in our asses and our heads are stuck up in it And our heroes may be rapists who watch us while we dream But don't look to me for answers 'cause I don't know what it means What it means What it means
I hate to use the word "woke" but I"m going to here. Truckers have always stood up for the oppressed. Thank you Patterson and the boys, know where Jason got it from, you taught him well.

Ahmaud Arbery happen days ago. Sad but true as it still happens now. How is it people don't stop and wonder what's it like walking a mile in their shoes?
It's a great story, actually. It's a late '50s Gene Autry kids guitar made by Harmony and sold at Sears. A guitar maker in Athens takes these old guitars completely apart and replaces the bridges, takes the backs off and reshapes the braces and turns it into a really playable guitar; both Patterson and Cooley have his restorations. I know so much about it because I have one that's identical to his. I bought mine off Ebay for $100....
This comment is so stupid you must be a simpleton. So I guess I'm going to have to break it down into easy to understand bite size pieces. Don't worry I'll use small words. "When this record flops." ( Oh sorry numbers probably confuse you.) "I hope they go back to making good records." Stupid because. A- They haven't made a bad one. He was running down the street when they shot him in his tracks
About the only thing agreed upon is he ain't coming back
There won't be any trial so the air it won't be cleared
There's just two sides calling names out of anger and of fear
If you say it wasn't racial when they shot him in his tracks
Well, I guess that means that you ain't black, it means that you ain't black
I mean Barack Obama won and you can choose where to eat
But you don't see too many white kids lying bleeding on the street
In some town in Missouri but it could be anywhere
It could be right here on Ruth Street, in fact it's happened here
And it happened where you're sitting, wherever that might be
And it happened last weekend and it will happen again next week
And when they turned him over, they were surprised there was no gun
I mean, he must have done something, or else why would he have run
And they'll spin it for the anchors on the television screen
So we can shrug and let it happen without asking what it means
What it means
What it means
Then I guess there was protesting and some looting in some stores
And someone was reminded that they ain't called colored folks no more
I mean we try to be politically correct when we call names
But what's the point of post-racial when old prejudices remains?
And that guy who killed that kid down in Florida standing ground
Is free to beat up on his girlfriend and wave his brand new gun around
While some kid is dead and buried and laying in the ground
With a pocket full of Skittles
What it means
What it means
Astrophysics at our fingertips and we're standing at the summit
And some man with a joystick lands a rocket on a comet
We're living in an age where limitations are forgotten
The outer edges move and dazzle us but the core is something rotten
And we're standing at the precipice of prejudice and fear
We trust science just as long as it tells us what we want to hear
We want our truths all fair and balanced as long as our notions lie within it
There's no sunlight in our asses and our heads are stuck up in it
And our heroes may be rapists who watch us while we dream
But don't look to me for answers 'cause I don't know what it means
What it means
What it means
