This video is an experiment to see how rapidly the theremin can be injected into the world's collective consciousness. It's amazing that not everyone knows what a theremin is. It was one of the first electronic musical instruments ever made and it was invented in 1919. Are Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse from Gnarls Barkley really theremin players? There's only one way to find out!
some notes:
The main theremin was passed through iZotope Trash, an awesome software guitar effects plugin. The video was edited entirely in Adobe After Effects. The hand on the carpet was to simulate wind noise, definitely cause for confusion. This also means all the parts of the song were performed with hands only. CRAZY!
Randy George - Moog Etherwave Pro Theremin, Moog Etherwave Theremin, Minimoog Voyager, carpet
KD - Akai MPC drum machine
OG - background vocals on keyboard
Elliot - Fender Bass VI
This video performance is dedicated to the pioneers, Leon Theremin and Bob Moog, who devoted their lives to music in the electronic medium. Without them the music world would not be what it is today.

I watched this first in 2008 and now in 2020 I'm still in love with this video!
Probably one of the few results that show up that include "Barkley" and "Jam" and it doesn't involve Space Jam in any way.
What about the video game Barkley Shut up and Jam?
Randy,
I have to return to this occasionally. It is timeless and always relevant.
This sounds like Kenny from SouthPark singing, holy crap you guys Gnarls Barkley is Kenny!!
Best comment
Sounds like Charlie Brown's teacher is singing
+John Smith ahuhauha yes... she is singing hahaha funny

Instrument Difficulty
5) Keys
4) Drums
3) Bass
2) Theremin
1) Carpet
Who was playing the carpet?
This is the best comment that has ever been on RUclips.
EASYTIGER10 hahahahah, it was meeeeeeeee!
The carpet player has been listed in the video description for almost 10 years.
So it has! Its....YOU! :)
Hahaha
Five years after I discovered this piece, it's still the best theremin tune I've seen anywhere.
Curratum I think the Daft Punk- Something about Us cover is better. But I suppose it could be disqualified as he doesn't play theremin for the entire video.
Same... i keep coming back to this!
Agreed, this kind of talent is way ahead of its time!
@Curratum ruclips.net/video/ajM4vYCZMZk/видео.html
After watching Grégoire Blanc's cover of Schindler's List Theme on theremin + piano, I think I'll have to relegate this excellent cover to the second place...
This has been living in my head rent free for 15 years! Still slaps just as hard as the day I first heard it! u are a legend sir!
Idem 😎😎😎
sounds like someone trying to sing through a kazoo
That's... that's basically what you do...
@@djdrew11 except that it's not, the Theremin is handling the "vocals" here.
@@madmax2069 I meant that's how a Kazoo works.
the double theremin harmony during the chorus is amazing. WOW!
The theremin is such a difficult instrument to play, that it's very rare to see anyone this good! Amazing job!
This video shows why mastering vibrato on any instrument is vital to having a rich tone. Look at his hand go!
Very true ! Esp instruments that need a precise pitch control. Violin, Cello, etc..
Vibrato helps masking imperfect pitches.. lol
Yeah, I play upright bass and fretless bass guitar and I used to play cello. It was essential when playing cello and is useful for bass, but not as critical as it is for cello.
I almost misread mastering as _masturbating_.
Yeah!! Everything changed for me when I mastered vibrato on my piano :)
Charlie Browns teacher would be proud...
haha, thats an awesome comment, it does sound just like the teacher, i wonder if that is the setting he used, lol
Fucking hillarious 🤣🤣🤣
You right I'm proud

Hizek LH Reading this I can't help but think of "Seagulls stop it now"
Hahahahaha 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Fantastic! I love the theremin sound, and this is a talented performance.. great rendition of a great tune.
A joy to hear!
Theremin playing notably featured on the Beach Boys' recording "Good Vibrations" and on the soundtrack to the iconic sci-fi film classic "Forbidden Planet".. which were probably where I first heard it and was impressed by it, as a boy.
Thanks for posting this; I have now subscribed to your channel!
Great Theremin cover of Crazy.
This is one of the coolest videos RUclips has ever suggested for me. (I know, I know - here's my nerd card, you can stamp it)
Love you
I’ve been a RUclips viewer since 2007-2008ish, and I’ve been far and wide on this platform, why am I JUST NOW seeing this? This is beautiful.
Best Theramin playing I've seen so far on RUclips! ROCK ON!
There is nothing more hardcore then a Theremin.
Wow that's cool. Now add a talkbox to that thing and you have a super weird and futuristic vocoder.
I see Bane took up singing.
hahahahahahah!!
It would be extremely painful.
No one noticed him until he sung whilst wearing the mask...
the carpet was the ocean surf sounding stuff you heard. Ingenious! lol Outstanding.
omg this was amazing!!! never knew what a theremin was until i saw your Daft Punk Cover-now its my fav instrument EVER!
Drunk as hell when I heard this last weekend. Guess who's apparently got a theremin being delivered from Amazon on friday?
i was hoping to see cee lo green play the theremin. i am very dissapointed
Patrick Doran you would be more disappointed then i think.
I super want to build a theremin.
16 years later and still one of my favorite youtube music covers
The first cover song I ever saw on RUclips and this randomly popped up in my head today.
my god that was beautiful!
I want to learn how to play the Theremin!
same
Brilliant :)
Yup.
I think the high theramin part during the chorus is under appreciated. Very good pitch, which is hard to do on the theramin! :)
Anyone else got it recommended in 2021?
I remember watching this video when it came out, it brings back so many old memories!
google got me here... :)
+oneandunique HAHAHAHHAHA YESS
how?
Superb playing, Mr George. I've always thought it was very difficult to get such admirably precise control of intonation and dynamics from the instrument: great work!!
I used this to wake tf out my roommate back in college.. damn that was 14yrs ago or somethin. And I still goes back to this from time to time.
A very difficult instrument to master, but you have got it to a tee,,,Fantastic.
Somewhere only we know by keane would be perfect for this haunting tone.....
Hey Randy ! It's2/09/2010 and I still love watching this after all these times I've watched.Way to go on this one you all !
I Know that is a Moog Theremin, but where did you get the model and what kind is it ?
+ET Whisperer (TRebChanneling) Moog Music Etherwave Pro Theremin (now out of production)
Thats why I couldn't find one. That is amazing and thank u for sharing ur great gifts !
you are probably the only guy who I can stand to listen to do a cover of a song. You Rock.
that was so Cool,Brilliant...A couple amazing instruments ...Thxx to my friend who sent me this :)
Absolutely phenomenal. That was the coolest jam session I've ever heard!
I was raised on 1950's theremin sci-fi movie themes and this is plane crazy. Imagine the potential! With this device I could - dare I say it - RULE THE WORLD??
Very cool! Smooth, well done. And - - at no time during the performance did his fingers leave his hands! Seriously - thanks for posting, good job!
WOW!!!
I can't believe I'm just learning about the Theremin today. This video and your performance blew my mind.
@Spaz3278431 that's wrong, it doesn't use electricity from your body, your hands create interference in the radio signal from the antenna, that interference is reported to the speakers as sound
@ThePheonixKing32 Two antennas on the theremin are used to control the sound it makes, 1 antena adjusts the volume while the other 1 adjusts the pitch. its physics but basically ur hands and the antennas act as parallel plate capacitors and changing the distance between ur hand & the antenna changes the capacitance, which is electric charge over a potential difference, and the theremin converts that capacitance into the volume and pitch u hear. It takes physics to fully understand it.
That's flippin' BRILLIANT! Cheers for posting!
this is the best thing I've heard all day. thanks for posting.
dude this is old but gold
The theremin (/ˈθɛrəmɪn/[1]), originally known as the aetherphone/etherophone, thereminophone[2] or termenvox/thereminvox is an early electronic musical instrument controlled without contact from the player. It is named after its Russian inventor, Professor Léon Theremin, who patented the device in 1928. The controlling section usually consists of two metal antennas which sense the position of the player's hands and control oscillators for frequency with one hand, and amplitude (volume) with 2nd
i always get goose bumps when listening to this. Awsome work!
REAL GOOD!! I think is the best cover I've heard of this song!
That's some very awesome modulation of the theremin holy shit, tight playing too! What exactly did you use to create that?
I love it! I saw a demo at Denvention II of this instrument. Truly a remarkable accomplishment to play this.
Amazing talent! I hope you succeed in spreading knowledge of the Theremin.
awesome! really brillant! i can´t believe there is an instrument like that, you have to have a lot of "ear" to play that well, congratulations, man, and the song is beautiful
This is the ONLY cover of this song that I've found acceptable. Great job.
Thanks for the smiles! Great job.
Thanks bro, now I'm gonna have nightmares about that last second and a half of video for the rest of my life . . .LOL! Good stuff, keep it up!
Damn, this is the reason, why I am on youtube: among literally millions of shitty videos there are such gems as this nice little thing. You guys fucking rock!
I love it! Haunting sound, whole new meaning to playing the 'air guitar'!
Thats such an interesting sound.....is that Theremin being ran though some effects pedals, or is that the natural sound of that particular model? Its got a good sound....theremin like..but different from any others Ive ever heard.....its got an almost horn/vocal-like quality to it!
@sterlingredjack It's called a Fender Bass VI, although technically it is a Baritone Guitar I guess, this term was not around when they were produced originally check it:
Great work !!!
AWESOME SOUND TRUCK !
Love this performance!
@norticus1 Yes, they can make multiple sounds and adjust it. The reason that I found that theremin has too many limitations is that the players (who are so-called the bests) were unable to demonstrate the sufficient playing skills on the theremin (there are too many 'sources of error' in theremin. eg. you cannot really identify (other slide-like instruments provide a reference point at least) what key you are playing in as you play fast passages unless you have absolute pitch, you cannot ).
Main Theremin player - Thank you SO MUCH for using Clara Rockmore's technique
@markladkins It's a Moog Etherwave Pro. They don't make them any more, but you might still luck out and find one online somewhere. He's run it through a guitar audio plugin, too... This is all in the description, by the way... *-.-
Amazing skills, amazing performance. Overall rating: Amazing. Anyone who knows what a theremin is will love this.
freakin amazing! i honestly didn't know what a theremin was until tonight. now i want one...
You guys are wicked sick! Amazing!
This song always makes me sad whenever I hear it, but you make it sound so cool.
Incredible, i love this instrument!......and you are so greaT WHIT THAT!
BUT i have a question??? who invents the theremin????
I'M only watching this because my band teacher made this one of our assignments online, but I'm actually glad. This is really cool.
how much do they cost? are they hard to play? where can i get one? how do you play it? because ive tried soo many instruments and gotten good but none of them seem to satisfy and think that this thing will be the one thats for me. p.s how long did you practice this for?
awesome cover! Moogs are really awesome!
@TigrisISA From what I've heard/read, the electricity in your body. The Horizontal metal controls volume, the higher your hand, the louder, the vertical metal controls pitch, the farther the higher... I don't have a Theremin, so it's just a guess.
This is awesome! Great job!
1:39 - O_O
I don't know why but I chuckled at that face.
That was an awesome cover.
Amazing! I've never heard a Theremin played like that.
What's the bloke pressing buttons on a calculator doing?
The theremin sounds like a saxaphone when used with the iZotope Trash plug-in. In other words, this is quite a fascinating insturment to play on.
Wow I just saw your Zelda song before and I got to tell your skills skyrocketed!
At 0:45, what's happening on the bottom right hand of the screen? The hand forming the circular motion? Sounds like static noise, but I'm not too sure... How did you do that?
El mejor cover que e escuchado de esta canción!! Crazyyyy!! Solo escucharlo me da ganas de serguir el theremin con el sonido de la boca jajaja
This is so cool! I love it!
Brilliant!! I've got to have one of those....
@jcracker Yes, it sounds somewhat different from the traditional instruments, but it doesn't seem to be 'stably' or 'whatever you call it' playable.
Randy, you are excellent!.
Thanks for taking the theremin to next level!
This has to be the hooteyist recording I have ever heard!
I LOVE it!!!
I'm adding it to my favorites. . .
. . .let's see some more!
Met you at NAMM a couple of years ago... you were a pretty cool dude.
couldn't find you this year if you were there..
Well Done. Awesome cover.
Awesome, crazy experiment. Damn good stuff. thanks!
Sweet job. Music and video both.
Love the flash pic of Gnarls B in the middle (1:41).
Why isn't there more music composed for theramin? You know, something like Theramin Concerto in D major by Phillip Glass or A rock opera tune featuring theramin solos?
@trt1345 That's originally what the theremin was for. I don' t know if there was ever an orchestra, but people originally used it for art music exclusively.
The theremin works off of electrical signals.
Ever adjust an antenna on a TV or a radio and it caused interference? It's like that, but it makes music, one is for volume, and the other is for pitch.
I love this. Nice work.
