I always try to stagger cuts in wiring for that reason and also you don’t get all the shrink joints all in the same place, so less noticeable when you tape or conduit, but have been there in the past so feel your pain, live and learn
My OCD went off the chart when you didn't match the wire colors to each wire. That been said though......... you have much bigger stones than me for taking on these jobs. Just doing the clutch kit (and flywheel) on my 2002 A4 B6 3.0L Quattro took me 3 weeks of planning and sourcing parts. Thank you for all the amazing content you provide for us Dean. A Huge fan from South Africa.
Tidying up nicely Dean. Did a double take when you amputated the dead section of loom! All sorted now, and codes cleared thank god. Looking forward to the finished motor 👍😎
I would have probably replaced 1 wire at a time but all good in the end, what a really great car, I can see why you went for this car as I would myself, Well done Dean .
The only way we learn is through our mistakes.......I'm sure you won't be cutting through any more wiring looms in future Dean! Really enjoying this build..........have never seen an SQ5 before. It's a great looking car & as they are not imported where I'm living right now, am not likely to see ever see one. Keep up the great work!
Paint looks great . Colour suits that motor for sure. Well done on the wiring. When you cut the damage out I cringed. But fair play you got it done. The insulation may be gone bur wire core was still there. So you could of traced them. Good job bach.
Lol, when you chopped the cables I did have a moment where I went... Noooooooo... sure thought it straight after. Glad it came good though. This is looking like a great find now, well chuffed for you!
Nice work Dean, I made the same mistake repairing a Renault loom, sadly they had lots of wires the same colour, in the end I had to replace the full thing.
Rookie error, you'll never do that again! Well recovered though, so well done and best of all it works perfectly. Missing your weekly content, hopefully you'll be able to get back on track soon.
Always keep old wiring looming from all makes of car you change or replace and label the maker ! Thats what i do and they do come in handy when needed buddy !
Hi from durham dean👍👋 I was cringing and hanging on when you snipped the group out with no wire diagram 🤔 live and learn mate live and learn ( even if you cut and destranded one at time) taped and numbered using masking tape and reconnected one at a time man 🙈🕵 oh boy was that fun I bet arghh why I did I do this was top question to self 🤔😂 looks good job tho all ok in the end so 👍 great job👍 and on bodyshops side lol overspray why no sheet could bin thrown over I'll never know but yeah great job all round👍 thanks for your time and be safe see you soon👋
Looks like a few guys were shouting nooooo when you cut the loom Dean. Dont know if you have heard the saying.. Its a fool who does the same silly bloody thing twice... Kinda sits in the back of my mind . That said I've got a horrible feeling I might be guilty. Really nice job jointing mate i'm impressed, its all turning out good.
i found this, the actual plastic melts before the solder they really aren’t that good. i prefer doing the wires first and then sliding the black shrink over
I see you have your work cut out here Dean.......on that Little Tikes car in the garage. What does that need? A complete interior overhaul and then off for it's MOT?? 😂😂 Great content as always and the SQ5 paintwork looks lovely. Nice job on the loom too. I really don't like doing the electrics.
As soon as you said you were cutting the loom ,I shouted NO to the screen, but to avail. It would have been easier to change one length of cable at a time. But hay ho we learn buy our mistakes. Can't wait for the next video. But the way when you change the rear RSQ5 badge , re fit with a Black SQ5 badge and Black Audi rings. It will look finished and match the black Audi rings that are fitted on the front grill
Yes re wires I have come across that before and always do 1 wire at a time, would split apart the melted wires so no shorts and then replace 1 at a time (easy for me to say to you, but I have gone through the pain of it before, never again) 'guage' = say 'gaage'
Awesome job on the wiring Dean! Experiance told you 'look at the fuses first' while I would of not trusted the work I did and checked every wire! :) BTW - Is there another follow part to this? Keen to see it all up and running.
Good work. I would have guessed the 3 ground wires didn’t really matter which of the 3 corresponding ground wires they were connected to as long as they went to ground
Great job Watching you cut those wires, I was thinking what on earth are you doing, why isn't he checking out the situation thoroughly. Great lesson in life 😀 Looking forward to the next video. Safe driving. 👍
As soon as you put the wire cutters to that loom i was like "Nooooooooo". Hes just opened up a world of pain for himself. I would have pealed it back as much as possible and separated the wires. Then cut and replace 1 at a time.
Gauge rhymes with cage 😂😂 Glad to see you using a heat gun and not the usual YT lighter. Good job done, but maybe do it wire by wire next time, not just chopping the loom each end.
Too late now but if you do this in the future you need to stagger the joins which will give you a flush or rather flusher looking loom rather than a load of connectors bunched up together. Also dont cut the loom!!! Great save though so far!
I wouldn't have cut the cable, but taken off the tape to locate each one. Did you hear me shouting at the screen? NO NO.....Still you got it sorted great job
I did chuckle when you were cutting thinking “school boy error!!!” Also amused when you say gorge not gauge for the thickness of the wire!! And lastly did laugh when you said they painted the wiring then you cut it out anyway lol!!!! Other than that good content
If they're all connected to earth at one end of the cut and have continuity between them then it doesn't really matter which way round they're connected does it?
Everyman to his trade LOL, it never ceases to amaze how a someone so obviously talented with mechanics can be thrown by a few simple wiring issues 😀😀 but then again I would be the same if the situation was reversed.
They're very poor and for anyone watching stay well away from those low temp solder kits you can buy like these. There's so many videos showing how poor the solder alloy in them is and how little penetration into the cores you get from it.
That's why you should of just took your time and separated every single wire before you started chopping and once each wire was separated from the burnt loom then cut that wire then splice in the new length of wire then go onto seperating the next wire and do it that way
Well done Dean - was hiding behind my hands when you cut the loom, but punched the air when you found that pesky blown fuse! Best of luck with the MOT! When are you going to start on that small red project car (@2:02, bottom left corner of the screen, the one with the yellow top) 😜 Keep 'em comin'!
Gorge - A narrow valley between hills or mountains 8:12
Gauge - The thickness, size or capacity of something, ie "tyre gauge" "gauge wire"
Rhymes with cage
Exactly this!
I thought he said gorge and not gauge, wandered what he was on about.
Still awesome content that I always enjoy no matter how it was pronounced !! Just a friendly leg pull ;-)
😂
I bet there were many people screaming, DON'T CUT THE WHOLE LOOM. Lesson learnt now Dean, the Audi will make a great car when finished.
It's a mistake he'll not make twice!!
In his defence, he's normally pretty meticulous
I always try to stagger cuts in wiring for that reason and also you don’t get all the shrink joints all in the same place, so less noticeable when you tape or conduit, but have been there in the past so feel your pain, live and learn
I was going too, but the soldered connectors didn’t take up that much space at all and I didn’t have that much room to work with either side.
I do the same stagger the joints avoid a large block of connectors IF possible
Even a 45deg angle across the loom to be cut, can help identify each core
Also, sometimes, shorting out cables (when they are cut together) can cause equipment to reset.
I shouted NOOOO when you just went and cut the wire loom. Great job gettin it sorted though :)
And me
@@jibba771 me too!

Did make me feel funny when you just chopped it out rather than cutting one wire at a time. But glad you got it figured out in the end!
Well done I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have had the patience to do that 2hrs of finding and reattaching all those wires Dean absolutely brilliant Dean
Tidying up nicely Dean. Did a double take when you amputated the dead section of loom! All sorted now, and codes cleared thank god. Looking forward to the finished motor 👍😎
Beautifuly done. One thing i have realised is that when soldering using some flux. It helps spread the solder to the wires.
Appreciate the wiring loom tape shout out, great job, glad you managed the ball ache wiring job. Paint also looks perfect 👍
I would have probably replaced 1 wire at a time but all good in the end, what a really great car, I can see why you went for this car as I would myself, Well done Dean .

What fun to do some re-wiring without any diagrams but the solder in line splices are great 👍
Lol, when you chopped the cables I did have a moment where I went... Noooooooo... sure thought it straight after. Glad it came good though. This is looking like a great find now, well chuffed for you!
Keep up the great work Dean! 🙌🏻 loving the content on the Audi!
Great job mate, love the sq5.. hope you're family get to enjoy it soon 👍🏻
Good lesson learned there, Dean! Car’s looking good…👍
Hi Dean. Good content as usual. Regarding the wiring. (I would have done exactly the same thing) Cut, Regret & Fix ☺☺
See you in the next one. 👍👍
Nice work Dean, I made the same mistake repairing a Renault loom, sadly they had lots of wires the same colour, in the end I had to replace the full thing.
Should of scrapped it
Dean great job on wiring glad worked out for you I wud dun 1 wire at time look forward to nx video 👍
Great job on the wiring, it will be a great looking car when it's finished
*Look at how good that paint is looking* 🔥
Rookie error with the cables, it's going to be a nice car though. Love the vids mate 👍
Great paintwork looks stunning 😍
An easy fix Dean looking forward the the next update.

Never got on with those solder connectors, the heat required to melt the solder melts the insulation. I like the crimped heat shrink style.
i found this, the actual plastic melts before the solder they really aren’t that good. i prefer doing the wires first and then sliding the black shrink over
You work on a lot of VAG stuff, the wheel alignment tool is one of the best cheap tools I've ever bought.
Double click on the red modules in the auto scan to open them up. It's quicker than going backout and In to the modules individually
Your a brave man, kudos to you mate!!!
Great video, as always. Proper informative. Keep 'em coming 😁
Great job in bringing these Audis back to life, it’s a crime the way car owners abuse these great rides.
Awesome. Nice recovery.
Added optional extra, very rare colour coded wiring loom
Love the sq5! Looking forward to the next video
I see you have your work cut out here Dean.......on that Little Tikes car in the garage.
What does that need? A complete interior overhaul and then off for it's MOT?? 😂😂
Great content as always and the SQ5 paintwork looks lovely.
Nice job on the loom too. I really don't like doing the electrics.
Made a rod for your own back there, but lesson leaned I hope. Easy for me to say as an electronics engineer.

Always fantastically interesting videos. Cheers 👍
*Well Done - stunning car !*
great content,thankyou Dean,have a good weekend.

Good work. I would have guessed the 3 ground wires didn’t really matter which of the 3 corresponding ground wires they were connected to as long as they went to ground
Normally yes, but some control modules have earth switching instead of live. So it could matter. But unlikely in this instance
@@SavingSalvage I think you did right to play it safe. Ground-side switching is more common than power-side on most new cars.
Great vid Dean, headache solved
Nice job 😀👍 took longer than you planned but it worked it ok 👍
Heat shrink connectors is making my life sooooo easy. Best invention since sliced cheese....
Wonder if there is any universal loom plugs which you could have built up a patch harness to replace the part and then marry up to each end?
Great job
Watching you cut those wires, I was thinking what on earth are you doing, why isn't he checking out the situation thoroughly.
Great lesson in life 😀
Looking forward to the next video.
Safe driving. 👍
I do it all the time! Jump the gun 🤣
That's a serious wagon love it
Job nicely done!!👍👍😊

I came here for that. Love the channel. Reminds me of x zenon when the channel was very young.
Pronounced “gayj” :-)
Isn’t he an ex-Audi tech too? Scary that! 😬
Nice video Dean, BTW, wire 'gauge' rhymes with 'cage', not 'George'!
😂😂
Nice job dude!
Your not alone on the wire cutting bro sent the tee shirt. back on that one lol,
If they're all connected to earth at one end of the cut and have continuity between them then it doesn't really matter which way round they're connected does it?
Nicely done
this gave me a good feelig. thanks.
Did you ever make the final video for the SQ5
Everyman to his trade LOL, it never ceases to amaze how a someone so obviously talented with mechanics can be thrown by a few simple wiring issues 😀😀 but then again I would be the same if the situation was reversed.
I think you just discovered it's a good idea to do them one at a time
Great work.
Job well done 👍🏻
Good job 👍👍
Great content 👌 👏
Said "yesss" at the same time as you!
Good job 👍
Nice job
Thank goodness you're not Bomb Disposal 😂 😂
Great video matey 👍
These solder joints aren't good for amperage, plus the resistance can be too high. Luckily it's for you.
They're very poor and for anyone watching stay well away from those low temp solder kits you can buy like these. There's so many videos showing how poor the solder alloy in them is and how little penetration into the cores you get from it.
Interesting video, going to be a lovely daily for someone
Well done fixing the wiring in the end hope it passes the MOT
Good job 👏
Great content 👌
Very patient man 😂
Top job👍
So when are you going to do a subscribers car as I would like to be the first one in line lol
Great video
did your golf washer jets work? when i fitted them to mine i could get the washer fluid onto the windscreen. its really low down
You can adjust them using the little screw
Thought these wire colour issues could have been possible on the Cerbera but not at all here . What a nightmare .
Hi Dean :) Cant find the $th Video on this?? Would have loved to see it finished :(
May sound like stupid question but I'm going to ask anyway, why does the wiring have to be twisted? 🤔
Same fuse rating?
Great vid dream car 👍🏻
The moment you cut the loom, I was 😱
Looks good without the Audi badge but that RS badge 😂
That's why you should of just took your time and separated every single wire before you started chopping and once each wire was separated from the burnt loom then cut that wire then splice in the new length of wire then go onto seperating the next wire and do it that way

Do you want buy a toureag of me it's had water damage in the drivers footwell as the roof leaked damaged the loom under the carpet ?
