    Another important thing about air pellets, they don't have the sectional density or weight of a regular bullet of the same caliber so they won't carry as much energy, even if velocity was equal. Great video! I have a Gamo .177 spring-piston and when I 'diesel' it, it goes from 770fps to 990fps with a 10.5gr. pellet.

    Keep in mind bullet weights too. I saw a test where a guy did a soft clay test between the two but he used a .25 caliber PCP airgun because it is closer to the equivalent of a 22 LR and it's still amazing the extra damage the LR did. It went straight through the clay block and left about an inch hole with a 3-4 inch crater on the inlet side and the .25 pellet might have went all the way through I can't remember but it was no hole and only had about a 1-1/2 inch crater. And I love PCP airguns I recently acquired a Korean lever action in .25. it's awesome and powerful but overall a 22 LR still beats it. But to know it's power people readily hunt smaller hogs with .25 caliber PCP airguns. Part of that is airguns obviously have limitations so headshots are a must.

    Cool comparison. You should revisit the same test and use an airgun slug hollow point. Then you have slug versus slug, and turn up the power on the Avenger to get 950 plus FPS. Use at least a 30 grain aigun slug. 30.5 grain ZAN slug in .218 diameter.

    • @shenmisheshou7002
      @shenmisheshou7002 5 месяцев назад +1

      Exactly. Man air guns can shoot a 40 grain slug at 1040 fps or more. Many people don't really understand how poweful air rifles have gotten. Now the .22 slug will not be quite as powerful as the .22 LR, but considering you can buy 200 for $15 vs $100 for the same number of .22 LR. I have been shooting air rifles for three decades and I would never go back to powder for just plinking around or for light game. (I can buy 500 .22 hollowpoints for $7. Wow!

      @@airguns_rc I kept it to the .22 to be fair to the comparison of the same caliber, but yes, a lot of firearms people don't really understand how powerful airguns have gotten. Per caliber, the firearm ammo is more powerful, but if you shoot a lot, as I do (about 500 shots a month, the cost of a really good airgun and compressor starts to look better and better the more you shoot. I stopped shooting firearms on a regular basis when I first discovered precision arighuns just before the Atlanta Olympics. My gun store/range had a 10M match pistol in their display case. I was infatuated by it and that was the beginning of the end of my regular shooting of firearms. I still have a 9mm pistol and a Colt Python, but I almost never shoot them. I shoot my FX Maverick 4 or 5 times a week.

I shoot at least 500 rounds a week and probably more between all my different calibers. I also attend the international competitions. Great people and great competitions. Who Tee Who got bit by the airgun bug last year. He has a few Airguns now. He has a Seneca Big Bore as well, the new Avenge X, and he has an FX Impact. In the back side of the pellets. An then check the speed difference. Some people call it dieseling. You don't have to fill it to up half way to 3/4. It will be faster then the 22 LR. Just to let you know don't use some cheap pellet rifle. At 50 yards I can get a 1 to 1 1/2 inch Group. I don't know if you can show this on RUclips. It sounds like you're shooting a 22 LR. That air rifle is a low power rifle. There are plenty of air rifles with greater power/velocity that are closer to the rimfire. Also, the weight of the lr projectile is twice that of the pellet. That is a doubly unfair comparison. If you used a slug in the air rifle and a high-power air rifle it would be a fairer comparison. A better comparison would be an FX Impact with slugs verses the .22 lr.

    I have a haard time understanding why that these air rifle companies can make a product that pushes a 250 gr. Slug at 850 fps but that dont make a product that pushes a 28 gr. Slug at 1200 fps. Is there some kind of engineering block on lower caliber pcp rifles? I have a dana springer in .177 and new it was pushing its pellet at 1235 fps. That rules out any limits on the ammount of air getting into the chamber. If a springer can a pcp should be even better.

      All these answers are nice but they still don't explain the difference in my .177 cal 1200 plus fps springer and a pcp of almost any caliber that only gets 800 fps. Also accuracy is no argument as that dana springer can punch the same hole all day long if it's serviced properly. As for understanding the need for speed my background is hunting and even if it were paper punching the flatter a gun shoots the more human error you eliminate.

    I think a .22 short, if you can find them, is going to be closer to an air rifle. Weren’t they usually around 800-900fps?

      Yea, shorts are around that velocity. There’s also super calibra that are around 600.

    That Bugara is a sweet rifle. I am not familiar with the brand of PCP you used but I'm just going to bet you can shoot a tighter group with it at 25 or even 50 yards than you can with the rimfire. Off the bench, fully supported on both rifles of course. I think you will be surprised. Love your vids, man.

  • @jasoneckhart1997

    They're both subsonic so I'm not surprised by the results. If the 22 long was supersonic it would've broken up and only gone as far as the pellet, I don't think the jacket on the 22 long made that much difference. I'll go with the rim fire first cause I don't want to take the time to re gas my gun all the time.

    .22 air rifles are about handgun velocity, but of course a much lighter pellet/ bullet weight. For small game at short range a .22 air rifle is very capable, Hay you can even get .30 cal air rifles capable of taking deer.
    The .22lr is as always very effective on a lot of game, it's often dismissed as weak and almost a "toy" but it's definitely not. A lot of people have been killed by accident because others didn't think it capable of much, and disregarded a safe backstop.

    I think you would find more penetration, possibly if you used a non-expanding pellet. Some pellets even have a sharp pointed head that you could try as comparison.

    Lower speed and less mass equals a lot less kinetic energy, that was some nice expansion from the pellet though, I wasn't expecting that 😮

    You would have had a better comparison with a pellet with a conical tip similar to a 22lr. Tough to compare a wadd cutter to a Spitzer boat tail

  • @007tallguy

    You should try the CCI 22 Quiets, those would be a fair match with the pellet gun, very similar velocity.
    And compare the Quiets with the CCI Stingers, see what kind of difference velocity really makes. 👍😉

    Bet if you compared the 22 short to the lr the short will have better penetration. Slower velocity makes them expand less and travel further

    Awesome video as usual brother. But as a airhead I gotta say there are much badder 22 air rifles out there. A 36gr 22 slug at 1050 is well within reach. That being said the avenger is a great little plinker. Stay awesome WTW

    Pcp airguns are the most powerful regardless of caliber

    The pellets are designed to be as light as possible. Not really a fair test considering the weight and density difference.
    I'd like to see a pneumatic rifle that slings the exact same round for a better comparison

    The chronograph of the air rifle .22 is slightly higher than a 32 grain 22LR CCI Stinger being shot by a North American Arms (NAA) with a 1.13" barrel (this tiny revolver can fit into a pack of cigarettes, 100's). Comparing these two in milk jugs (or anything else) would be incredibly fascinating! I wish more 22LR comparisons used the NAA 22LR, as it is basically the worst case scenario option for this round.
    Also the energy transfer destruction between the air rifle and 22LR was very significant. The air rifle basically just poked a hole. Whereas the 22LR caused a small explosion in the first jug. Would these results be the same with a 22LR being shot at roughly the same velocity as the air rifle?

      @WayStedYou 6 месяцев назад

      36 grains at 850fps is less than half the energy of the 36 grain at 1280fps 57 ft lbs vs 131, and that crow mangum pellet is 18 grains at 850fps so its only 28 ft/lbs of energy.

  • @leonhart2452
    @leonhart2452 6 месяцев назад

    Do you have 22 pellets of different styles? Using a flat or round nose pellet might give you different results. The flat nose may expand a bit but give more pentration, the round nose pellet should expand less and give even more penetration.
    If you have other pellet shapes could you do a test comparing them to the hollow point pellet. Depending on what you are shooting the performance of the pellet on the target could mean a clean kill or just a wounded animal. I had a pellet rifle years ago, just some off brand, don't even recall the brand, about 750 fps with lead pellets. 17 caliber and used the flat nose pellets to hunt rabbits. They killed very well. The round nose tended to pas right through and ofyen i had to shoot a second time after sesrching sround the brush to find it.
    At the time I lived in New Mexico, and scrambling around in the brysh wasn't always a good idea. Snakes, scorpions and throny brush made that not do much fun.

    wow.. I had no idea what a .22 air powered rifle can do.. Now I am wondering what a .22 air vs. .177 air would match up. I any case, impressive video. Thanks!!

      This test under-rates modern .22 air rifles. My .22 air rifle can shoot a 40 grain slug at 1040 fps, This is not quite as powerful as a .22 long rifle, but it is pretty close. On the other hand, I can plink with 14 grain hollow points that cost almost nothing at 820 fps for target work. I think 500 cost me $7. To get this kind of power, you would need to use a PCP air rifle. The Avenger he used in the test can fire a .22 slug, but to get it to high power, he would need to adjust the regulator. More expensive air rifles allow you to use a wheel to adjust the hammer strike harder for heavier pellets. TO make this test better though, the tester should have used slugs and should have maxed out the regulator. Of course if you use these kinds of power, the number of shots falls dramatically. My air rifle has a large bottle and I can get 90 or so shots of .15 grain pellest at 840 fps, but a 40 grain pellet at 1040 fps really cuts down the shots per fill.

    If you used tin pellets you could probably get close to 1200fps but you would lose mass. Curious if it might make a difference. Kinda how 5.56 works to defeat body armor. 22 cal lighter projectile going really fast.

    Cool but pointless exercise, in my opinion. If you are looking for penetration, then why use hollow points projectiles? I thought that the whole point of a hollowpoint is that it quickly dumps all its energy on entry causing maximum cavitation and damage, rather then merely passing through and leaving a nice neat hole behind?
