I own quite a few rimfires as well as a Savage A17 Heavy Barrel chambered in 17HMR. Absolutely love this little rifle, lights out accurate and have not had any repeating issues as long as I run quality ammo.
And also good to know, I've been looking at getting a 17 and didn't think about that and I'd hate to go down range and all my steel has holes in it. Makes sense with the velocity, small diameter and high speed is how to defeat armor. Thanks for the PSA!
@@jaydunbar7538 I shoot AR450 and AR500 with my .17. It’s actually brutal on mild steel, even ballistic tip stuff. Btw ball does more damage on small targets and ballistic tip stuff well placed can take out bigger animals but placement is extremely important because I quartered a coyote and it tossed it’s guts out and broke it’s back. Absolutely terrible, and now I won’t use it for these animals again because it’s not reliably human in my hands for animals that size. .22-250 however gives me the option for quartering bigger animals like this.
Yeah, if it's early season and you're working a hickory they're cutting on, subsonic 22lr is hard to beat for squirrels. Later on when you're stalking the woods, 17 Mach 2 is king. My Mach 2 CZ 452 Varmint is a tack driver.
Hunting alone, ranges, generally less than 50yds, shelved the .22lr and used an airgun (neighbors didn't notice 'wire chewing little pests getting light on the roof). Worked ok.
Excellent presentation, Ron. You're a great speaker. I think rimfires are the most fun cartridges to shoot, although I don't get to do it often enough. Limited recoil, noise, but easy on the budget and super accurate.
Great video Ron, as an owner of many 22’s 22wmr 17 Hmr’s and a 17wsm i find my 17wsm savage b mag to be the most accurate with a close 2nd to my cz 455 night sky, I use my 17wsm for pretty much everything from gophers to coyotes, it’s my go to beaver gun, I use to believe nothing could beat a 22wmr for beaver head shots, my super mag proved me wrong this spring it does damage, I even stretched a few out just over 200 yards this spring across long ponds on calm nights, not sure why the WSM gets a bad wrap I’ve shot 1000’s of rounds through mine and it’s still accurate as hell
I have a cz 17 hmr 452 tack driver . It took 3 tries to get a 17wsm that would shoot accurate. It's a fluted barrell savage and l don't use the cz any more. Love my Wsm
About the 22WMR and the accuracy of the same. I have an Anshutz 1518 Mannlicher with the double set triggers. When I bought it in Germany, it was a pleasure to shoot, and very accurate. When I got it back to the World, I enjoyed shooting it with a Weaver B4 scope, seeing three-quarter inch, five shot groups. Then, I ran out of RWS ammo, and could not find any more. Tried Winchester (the inventer, remember?) Instant 3 inch, 3 shot groups. I put the gun away for almost 20 years. When CCI came out with the MaxiMag+V, it was magical. Now I have RWS and CCI. Moral: Ammunition choice is critical to be able to maximize accuracy. The WMR can be very accurate.
I have a 17 mach 2 and absolutely love it. It's my go to squirrel/rabbit/small varmint rifle. It doesn't make much noise and it has great precision and reach. For a while I about ran out of ammo. I picked up every box I could find of it. Now I probably have enough to last the rest of my life! Either way, not a popular round, but it's a great one for its intended purpose in my opinion.
Ron, I will break this rimfire thing down from the perspective of small game hunting in the southern woods where most shots are 40 ish yards, and 80 is max and extremely rare. I will keep it simple. The 22 LR has a poor trajectory and is too weak for some situations. The 22 WMR with anything but an FMJ, blows shit up. Finding a 22 WMR that is accurate enough to squirrel hunt with is very difficult. It has proven to be a risk even if you shell out the cash for a good one. The 17 HMR blows shit up unless you shoot FMJ's. Again, a lot of rifles can't shoot those effectively enough to squirrel hunt. Here is where the Mach 2 comes into the equation. The Mach 2 is the absolute king of the squirrel woods. It has the accuracy, the trajectory, and the pop all while not blowing up whatever it touches. If they ever decide to make 22 WMR or 17 HMR FMJ ammo more accurate then there would be no place for the HM2. If CCI would go back to their original gamepoint design by making them a flat nose again, then that would take away from the HM2 as well. I don't know a single serious rifle squirrel hunter that still shoots a 22 long rifle. It just isn't up to snuff with the others. To add, the WMR, HMR, and HM2 are excellent hog killers while the 22 lr is not. Between myself and a couple others in my family, we have killed hundreds of pigs with them. The largest was over 330 lb (22WMR FMJ) and the furthest was about 120 yards with a 17 Mach 2. Proper shot placement is key of course and they drop stone dead. The 22lr just can't do it like they can, and you will lose pigs with them. They won't even penetrate the skull sometimes when shooting between the eyes. Back to bullets. I don't understand why the focus on exploding bullets with rimfires. I received an email from CCI stating that they made the gamepoint more explosive because people complained it didn't do enough damage. WTF!? So instead of telling folks to shoot hollow points or Vmax they ruined the bullet. Because HM2 rifles are so hard to get right now, there is a push for manufacturers to make a calmer match grade 17 HMR load with a flat nose bullet that would effectively mimic HM2 performance. It is needed. Lastly, no one wants that ugly savage. If someone would make a decent looking HM2 it would sell. I am probably going to buy a CZ 457 in 22lr and put an aftermarket barrel on it just so I can have my own personal HM2.
Ron, thank you very kindly for your videos. I've spent considerable time watching these as well as the old Legends stuff. Fan for sure. It'd sure be cool to watch you do some more shooting!
Really, I may need to get one. My favourite caliber is .22lr but .17hmr is a very close second. I love bigger stuff of course but tiny rounds are just so cool to me.
I use the .17-WSM! I love that rifle and the cartridge! It has three different grains of bullets and they all perform with deadly accuracy out to 100-yards plus with ease... I bought a Savage 17-WSM heavy barrel, got rid of the factory stock, and got a nice Boyd Rifle Stock for it, and had it bedded lol! Went out west on a Gopher hunt and decimated them at 100 to 150 yards out with a Vortex Scope on it! I've whacked plenty of Coyotes, Badgers, Raccoons Opossum, Woodchucks, and squirrels .17-WSM the BOMB!
Another great video....Love your comments on the Mach2...so glad that one made a comeback.....i dare to say it is the PERFECT squirrel gun....i'm not sure how it could be improved upon for anything squirrel sized
Very interesting points on the Mach 2. There is almost nothing for guns or ammo locally though for the Mach 2 (Saskatchewan) and the HMR is BY FAR the more popular .17 round here. I recently bought a CZ 457 in .22 WMR and boooooy does it ever shoot! Consistent 5 shot groups under a half inch at 100 yards with 30gr V-Max. The good old '22 mag' still holds her own I think. Excellent video as usual 👍 thanks for what you do!
I purchased a heavy barrel for my 10-22 years ago in Aguila 17. It feeds great out of the standard 22 mags. A little fussy to load the mags because the bullet is so small to hold onto. Shoots great! Sub 1/2" groups at 50yrds.
Great video ,thanks for the 5mm mention ,their great. I have rifles ina all the mentioned cal. And 17 HMR rules. That’s my opinion. I got stuck with one of the early savage rifles for the 17 WSM. So it’s hard to judge the cartridge till I get a rifle that works from a company that cares. Thanks for sharing.
I had reasonable perfoermance from the Ruger 77/17 in WSM when it first came out. Current users report the latest models are quite accurate. I've got my M85 Winchester/Browning single-shot shooting MOA and slightly better. Accurate 17 WSMs are out there!
Quickly becoming one my favorite channels. Ron really is THE straight shooter. Poly tip bullets really have allowed rimfires to come in to their own. The 22 WRF and 5mm Remington did not have superior bullets to make them special. Keep up the good work Ron!
Thanks Hillbilly. I intend to continue offering sound information and advice based on objective reality with but a smattering of personal bias sneaking it from time to time.
I love my 5mm Remington rimfire magnum. And yes aquila is making the ammo again, they was also behind one of the older companies that made it years ago as well.
Yes, I was waiting for him to mention the WRF. They fit and fire just fine in the .22 WMR chamber. They use a heavier bullet than the .WMR, I think around 45 grains.
I have a friend that got a ton of 22 WRF ammo from a old store that closed and had it in the back. He shot it in his 22 mag just fine and had a lot of fun with them. Free ammo is always fun though lol
Good information as always Ron. Love your videos. Here in Sweden the ammo prices on the 17 hmr is ridiculous. Around 30 dollars for a box of 50 rounds. I think the prices for 6.5x55 is nearly the same. The 22lr is my choise but the 17 hmr is pretty popular on Grouse up in the mountains because the long distance an flatter trajectory. 22 wmr seams to be quite dead due to problems with finding the right ammo that will shoot good and tight at 80 yards and beyond, and ammo prices are little bit cheaper then 17hmr but not much.
@Chris Deaven 11-13 dollars sounds good, if we had those prices in Sweden for the 17hmr I would have got one. Seems to be quite devastating round on small critters.
Grouse is what I use 17HMR for here in Canada. They dont fly much, mostly freeze and rely on camouflage. 20-30 yards all you need is a consistently accurate rifle that can hit a 1/2" target (head shot). It is expensive yes. I can tolerate the price for hunting, I wouldnt spend too much time target shooting with that. That's where the 22LR is king
Ron, you left out the Savage in the .17 WSM. I have one in a heavy barrel and it shoots 1/2” all day long. Mine is in stainless w/ a thumb hole stock and acccutrigger. Love it,
I absolutely LOVE my 17 HMR (savage)its my most accurate rifle I own. Everyone i let shoot it falls in love and usually buys one. I loved it so much i bought a newer version of the same rifle the other day and cant wait to scope and shoot it. I wont break any world distance records of course. But i can get on a 8’ paper plate at 238 yds every single time. But 150 yards and in i can put most of the rounds in the same hole or next to it.
What would REALLY BE COOL, is to see a presentation on 3 cartridges rarely heard of, .218 Bee - .219 Wasp & .221 Rem FireBall...... Ron, wasn't there also a .217 ????? - something called the Zipper ????? Of course most of has heard of the .220 Swift,,, but it would be cool to learn more on they others........
.221 Fireball? Man, that brings me back to being a kid rifling through the Remington catalog and ogling their XP-100 space pistol that I knew I would never own since my dad only owned "utilitarian" firearms in "useful" calibers.
I use 22 CB Caps for rodent control in my garden...in town lot so I want something quiet and unobtrusive...ordanances against shooting in town. But what they don't know won't hurt them.
Should make a video of the smaller centerfires, 22 hornet, 221 fireball, 218 bee.. For comparison, the 22 hornet has the same energy/velocity at 100 yards as the 22 wmr at muzzle. I'm a bit in love with the ugly ducking wich is the hornet, small caliber, works up to 150-200 yards depending on load and cheap (when reloading) as there is 9-13 grain powder depending on powder type.
@@brianhoxworth3881 isnt the 222 remmag almost exactly like the 223? case volume is like 5% smaller on the 223.. Never seen one live. Otoh 223 is quite uncommon in sweden, the 222 has reign supreme since it came.
Thanks for all the information!!!! Love the channel. The 22lr or my 22mag is always my go to round when fishing or walking around in the woods with the hounds.
Being honest in all of my experiences the 22 lr an the 22 mag always perform the best at taking game. They may not have the speed and accuracy. But critters don't make it back into the hole and get lost. Sametime I am aeat hunter those 17s blow up to much meat on squirrels and rabbits. Plus they don't take groundhogs bobcats fox coyotes beavers without 2 shots. Then the pelts are ruined. The meat is also ruined enough we can't feed my friends bear dogs or his pet bear. Cuz we don't want them to get copper or lead cutting them inside. The 22s are an all around safer bet for how and what we do. Same time I'm sad to see you didn't say anything about the 5mm rim fire. Not comment here in the states but I own 4 of them and it's honestly a fun gun to shoot when I find ammo. It gives me that happy medium between a 22 long and a 22lr for how I've played with it.

Switched to 17hmr years ago. Haven't lost any meat on squirrels or rabbits you are correct with head shots tiny hole on one side and the other side well it's gone. I am looking for the AR version in the 17 WSM. Great videos.
I use CCI ammunition in all my rifles. I also use CCI 22 Mini Mags in my 10-22 Ruger with great results, but I never hear any mention of the round when others are being compared.
I’ve pretty much stopped using .22 lr here in our crowded little British isles. 30 ft lb air rifle or 17 hmr if I need the range. .22 ricochets are just too scary. Keep the videos coming I really enjoy them.
Do you have the heavy barrel or standard? I’m looking to get one but I’m disappointed they don’t make one threaded. The Ruger 77/17 is threaded but ridiculously priced. The Winchester Xpert has a threaded one, but it’s only a 16 inch barrel. Anyway, I think that leads me to the heavy barrel bmag and just paying to get it threaded.
Thank you sir . 45 yrs old been shooting since I was a kid and always wondered how they got that shit into the rim to make it go bang . Love your videos
Anyone that doubts the capability of rimfire cartridges have never used them. A friend in Maine, where it is legal to hunt deer with 22 Mag, has been doing so now for nearly 30 years. He has yet to lose a deer and anchors them with one shot every time. He only shoots out to 50-60 yards and domes them and they drop. No fuss, no muss, no tracking. Granted you’re not taking 100-200 yard headshots with it but for the 50-60 yard range it certainly does the job very well.
I couldn't help but notice that you didn't have any variants of the .22lr and the .22wmr. Both are available in 30 grain copper jacketed hollow point The .22lr is now getting up to 1,750 fps and the .22wmr is at 2,200fps. Energy levels for both are making them capable of hunting hogs and coyote out to 250 yards.
Hey Ron, the reason the 22 magnum rifles are not very accurate is because they build them like 22's with barrels pressed into the receivers. Its too much power for a cheap pressed fit. Get your hands on a Mossberg model 640, theres several different models of the 640, but they all have barrels threaded into the receivers. It makes all the difference! I think even the H&R model 700 semi auto was threaded and said to be super accurate. Hope this helps.

I own quite a few rimfires as well as a Savage A17 Heavy Barrel chambered in 17HMR. Absolutely love this little rifle, lights out accurate and have not had any repeating issues as long as I run quality ammo.
PSA: 22 LR targets are not rated for 17 HMR
I have done the research
How much did that research cost you? Hopefully it wasn't a really nice target lol
17hmr shoots through coins at 100m and chair legs h,r,s steel
Yeah. I did the research too. I read the box.
Yeah, if it's early season and you're working a hickory they're cutting on, subsonic 22lr is hard to beat for squirrels. Later on when you're stalking the woods, 17 Mach 2 is king. My Mach 2 CZ 452 Varmint is a tack driver.
You got that right!
Hunting alone, ranges, generally less than 50yds, shelved the .22lr and used an airgun (neighbors didn't notice 'wire chewing little pests getting light on the roof). Worked ok.
Thanks Ron, I really appreciate and enjoy your commentaries on different rifle ammunition, God bless 🤙🏽
Love my Wsm
I still have never seen a box of .17wsm, and I shoot .22wmr, so I’m in that section, often. Never once seen 50 let alone 1,000
Savage has the A17 in the 17 HMR auto loader. Beautiful piece
Yes, that is a good one. Smart cycling system they came up with.
I second that. It’s a fun rifle, and so far very reliable.
Sold my CZ mach2 when I couldnt find ammo anymore. Stopped using 22 and 17HMR when I started using my air rifles for squirrel hunting.
Thanks Ron. Rimfires let us shoot without the cost typically associated with centerfires making shooting much less of a financial burden.
Really enjoying these calibre reviews mate
Thank you Mr spomer, you my new favorite u tuber regards from South Africa 🇿🇦 great information videos👌
Thanks Jorge.
I bought 6 box's of hmr from gunbroker and for 3 of the box's are Mach 2
17 Mach 2 is an absolute awesome round. My go to for small game hunting.
17hm2 is my favorite rimfire round, great cartridge
Such a stellar round!
5 mm Remington rimfire. Was a great rimfire. Most people never know existed. Love it.
.22 Magnum is an excellent round out to 125-150 yards. Beyond that range I will reach for a .223 or .22-250.
Extremely friendly likeable personality
Extremely educational and informative
Thank you
MR RON SPOMER
Savage makes an autoloader for .17 hmr, buddy has one and has had success, didnt jam while I shot it, although I'm seeing mixed reviews online
I love my auto shoots fine
Really, I may need to get one. My favourite caliber is .22lr but .17hmr is a very close second. I love bigger stuff of course but tiny rounds are just so cool to me.
Savage A17, great with 20 grain pills. Love mine
@@hoglefish i emailed desert dog about my auto 17 but never heard from him. I heard he was sick. Maybe thats why
Great info Ron, if you can’t have fun with a rimfire you don’t know how to have fun!!
You got that right!
Ron, you're my age, but you talk like my Grandfather when I was 11. I appreciate so much. Thank you
Love my 17hmr.. very accurate and fun to shoot
I swear to be watched 50 of your videos in the last couple months . Thanks for what you big guy.
Glad you like them!
Another great video....Love your comments on the Mach2...so glad that one made a comeback.....i dare to say it is the PERFECT squirrel gun....i'm not sure how it could be improved upon for anything squirrel sized
Couldn't agree more!
brother I LOVE your channel!!! It's fun taking a look back at the firearms of my youth and all the wonderful memories of hunting as a kid
I have a hm2 and absolutely love it.
I got 5 different 17m2 and I love to shoot grey and fox squirrels with them.
Should I have gotten the .17 HMR.
Since I have discovered your videos, I have been enjoying the education. Your presentations are full of interesting and useful information. Thank you!
CZ knows how to build a Rimfire rifle. They'll shoot just as fine as a bench gun in the same caliber.
Yup! My Anshutz likes the MaxiMag+V. One ragged hole 3-shot groups are common at 100M.
@@RonSpomerOutdoors if a little personal bias didn’t creep in now and then you wouldn’t be human.
Oh this is gonna be a good one
I love my 5mm Remington rimfire magnum. And yes aquila is making the ammo again, they was also behind one of the older companies that made it years ago as well.
Dont forget about the 22 WRF that came before the 22 magnum! I love my winchester 1890 pump chambered for it, great squirrel round
Yes, I was waiting for him to mention the WRF. They fit and fire just fine in the .22 WMR chamber. They use a heavier bullet than the .WMR, I think around 45 grains.
Yep. Great little forgotten cartridge. 45 gr bullet running around 1550 fps. Great for small game n chuckin
I have a friend that got a ton of 22 WRF ammo from a old store that closed and had it in the back. He shot it in his 22 mag just fine and had a lot of fun with them. Free ammo is always fun though lol
Same as 22 Remington special
One of my favorite channels on youtube...wish we were neighbors
I think the 17 WSM would've been better, ballistically and favorably, if it been a .204" bullet and called the 5mm WSM.
Absolutely- Winchester missed a great opportunity there. But bear in mind that this is the company that gave us the 325 WSM instead of a 338
A 20 cal version would be a great little cartridge. I think the .17 gets a bit too light on the bullet weight and 5mm would be perfect.
Thought this was about rim fire's
@@robertfandel9442 It is.
LOL you did say that you used the 17hmr on "Raccoons and quite a few people" 6:54. Oops you let the cat out of the bag there, Ron!
Savage A17 is amazing Auto Loader for 17HMR. very accurate.
Thank you Ron for the work you put in. Always enjoy the presentations.
Very welcome
Holy smokes , I'm rich . 😳
You should be able to do that with most high powered rifle rounds lol
I love talking about cartridge ballistics and I think you just talked me into getting the 22 WMR Upper for my AR.
What would REALLY BE COOL, is to see a presentation on 3 cartridges rarely heard of,
.218 Bee - .219 Wasp &
.221 Rem FireBall......
Ron, wasn't there also a
.217 ????? - something called the Zipper ????? Of course most of has heard of the
.220 Swift,,, but it would be cool to learn more on they others........
.221 Fireball? Man, that brings me back to being a kid rifling through the Remington catalog and ogling their XP-100 space pistol that I knew I would never own since my dad only owned "utilitarian" firearms in "useful" calibers.
Always enjoyable to listen to Ron.
I use 22 CB Caps for rodent control in my garden...in town lot so I want something quiet and unobtrusive...ordanances against shooting in town. But what they don't know won't hurt them.
In town also. Try some cci quiet. I get away with it.
Lots of info to digest in this rimfire overview Ron. I learned much about the 17 Mach2 / 17HMR / 17WSM.
We'll get to those.
I’m with you on the Hornet. Really like that little cartridge.
Don't forget the 222 Remington magnum. The king of the. 22 line up. The 17 hornet would be nice to see.
@@brianhoxworth3881 isnt the 222 remmag almost exactly like the 223? case volume is like 5% smaller on the 223.. Never seen one live. Otoh 223 is quite uncommon in sweden, the 222 has reign supreme since it came.
Q
Thank you for teaching me about the .17HMR vs the .17HMR M2 because I knew there was a difference but nothing else.
You forgot about the 5 mm Remington
Watch the entire video. He mentions it toward the end of the video.
I had a 5mm in early 70 and loved it for ground hog . Ended up selling it when amo was stopped being made . Loved it .
Impeccable Contender!...and in the hands of someone who deserves the title: 'Rifleman'
Could the 22 hornet k be necked to 20 caliber in or 17.
Gday Ron
Great session Mate you are the first person that I have ever seen go the trouble and detail rimfire ammunition as you have I absolutely loved every second of your presentation you made it very interesting and clearly understood with your fact sheets , thank you very much for sharing your time and knowledge I have learned heaps from your videos since I have been following you , by the way if your ever in Australia I would love to take you hunting in our outback I’m sure you would enjoy that as much as I do , Steve from Australia .
Thanks Steve. I'll have to get back to Aus. again and soon!
Son and I love your videos. So Informative and you keep it fun. Thank you
One of my favorite times of the year is spring when the prairie dogs come out. My favorite cartridge to use on them is the .17 HMR.
Incredibly practical stuff!
Might watch his videos all weekend 😁
I would love to know more about the 22 Hornet. Tia. Great knowledge.
Watching this video during my lunch break, really made my day. What an awesome video. 👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’ve pretty much stopped using .22 lr here in our crowded little British isles. 30 ft lb air rifle or 17 hmr if I need the range. .22 ricochets are just too scary. Keep the videos coming I really enjoy them.
Excellent marksmanship, Ron! Great work!
Great video Ron as always!
What about Savages' 17 WSM B-Mag target rifle. Mine shoots amazing.
Out standing thank you
I just found your channel and I'm really glad I did. I'm really enjoying your content Mr. Spomer thank you so much
Z
where has this channel been all my life ?
Thank you sir . 45 yrs old been shooting since I was a kid and always wondered how they got that shit into the rim to make it go bang . Love your videos
Thank you for this educational presentation.
The 17 Mach 2 is a great little cartridge ... accuracy is just spectacular.
What a great presentation. I'm always impressed, but never surprised.
Right On Ron Thanks a Billion 😀👍🏼 Now I Need a .17 Rifle 😳
i really enjoy the videos of this guy alot of knowledge and a speaking Wikipedia about Ballistics, ammo and classic rifles just the best Channel
Love your videos and the always mentioned ethical matter, very impressed.
25 rimfire in the old Steven's Favorite Rifle was a absolute great shooter definitely my favorite rimfire cartridge of all time
I'm glad the 5mm Rem Mag was mentioned too👍
Hey Ron, the reason the 22 magnum rifles are not very accurate is because they build them like 22's with barrels pressed into the receivers.
Whether the barrel is pressed in or screwed in makes absolutely no difference. The chamber is in the throat of the barrel, not in the receiver.
@@wizardofahhhs759 It makes all the difference.
