Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Fun fact. The 17hmr was originally developed by a rifle maker in Broken Hill Australia who would buy 22 mag rounds and pull them apart to neck down to 17. He contacted various cartridge makers trying to purchase 22 mag brass but they would not sell to him. After a while of testing he went to a few cartridge manufacturers to try and develop his new cartridge but none would offer any support. Lo and behold shortly after the 17 HMR was released by one of the company's. No recognition given.
He did it to control feral cats.hes My dad.
Wrong you made that up it was designed after a kid named not real put a 177. Pellet on top of a 22 mag with super glue and Hornady made them better.
You forgot about a bigger "17". What about a 17 Rem Fireball
@@scottgengler1986they’re a centrefire cartridge and this video is about rimfire only.

This channel is one more reason why I don't watch TV. Thanks, Ron!
Many thanks, Mnt Man!
Me too
Exactly. TV is all about indoctrination, manipulation, turning your mind off, taking from your bank account.
This is educational, gets one to thinking, passes on valuable knowledge, gets community to interact.
Lifted above - spot on about tv - I stopped watching back when the nightly news became blatant, dishonest propaganda. I miss tha days of Walter Cronkite, when news was reasonably accurate, reasonably honest, and would actually investigate government corruption.
@@deandeann1541 Certainly. Here's what happened: ruclips.net/video/7wyji09rjTI/видео.html
I’m glad you mentioned the 5mm Remington at the end. I have one that was a wall hanger and dust collector for years until Aquila started making ammo again . The ammo isn’t cheap but I’ve been stocking up little by little in case it becomes unavailable again. I take the money out of my budget for my other bad habits. The only ones unhappy to see 5mm available again are the starlings that hang around my farm buildings.
my uncle has one, henhad it new ammo went away it came back it went away It came back. Its a nice cartridge but there arent enough guns to expect it to live on.
I came across a Remington 591m, still in the box! A Remington collector had passed away, the family was selling everything! They said it was worthless because of ammo availability, I bought it for 50.00 and the dust continued, I happened to be at a old gun shop going out of business, they had pretty much sold out of everything except for a 100 boxes of 32 grain hollow points, I got em all for five dollars a box! Those days are long gone, but I still have plenty of ammo, and love nor money can buy my 5mm!
Get those dirt bag starlings!
I was glad also! Mine was stolen, but hopefully I will find another someday...
@@dannywilsher4165 a couple of my guns were stolen last year. Nothing very valuable but only one was recovered and I am still p.o.‘ed about it. Hope you find another 5mm to replace your loss.
PSA: 22 LR targets are not rated for 17 HMR
I have done the research
How much did that research cost you? Hopefully it wasn't a really nice target lol
And also good to know, I've been looking at getting a 17 and didn't think about that and I'd hate to go down range and all my steel has holes in it. Makes sense with the velocity, small diameter and high speed is how to defeat armor. Thanks for the PSA!
@@jaydunbar7538 I shoot AR450 and AR500 with my .17. It’s actually brutal on mild steel, even ballistic tip stuff. Btw ball does more damage on small targets and ballistic tip stuff well placed can take out bigger animals but placement is extremely important because I quartered a coyote and it tossed it’s guts out and broke it’s back. Absolutely terrible, and now I won’t use it for these animals again because it’s not reliably human in my hands for animals that size. .22-250 however gives me the option for quartering bigger animals like this.
17hmr shoots through coins at 100m and chair legs h,r,s steel
Yeah. I did the research too. I read the box.
I’ve shot every one of these cartridges, from 22 Short, ,22 Long Rifle, 22 Magnum, 17 HMR, & 17 WSM. In my opinion, if you’re looking for the best all-around rimfire cartridge, .22 Magnum is the one.
Try the .22 SSS it has a 60 grain projectile subsonic.
@@mac11380 If that’s the 22 LR cartridge with a 22 Short hull & a long 60 grain lead bullet, making it the length of a 22 LR, I have some of those. Hard hitting, from a pistol or rifle.
@@boomstick4054 That is the round I was talking about my friend.
@@mac11380 It’s amazing that they will cycle most semi automatic guns with such a low powder charge, due to the heavy projectile.
Thank you Ron, very good show. I have a Ruger 10-22 set up for 100 yards, and a Savage bolt in the .17. Love them both. Great cheap pinker with the wife and kids.
Love your analogy and breakdown of the small and large Rimfire cartridges. You definitely taught me a few things. Awesome, and thank you for sharing your knowledge and your passion.
"Quite a few people"? Did anyone else catch that at 6:56? Ron said he shoots red fox, raccoon and quite a few people...... that's a hell of a sound bite if you cut it off right at the end of people ;-)
YES! LMFAO!
I literally just wrote this same comment haha. 🤣
glad i'm not the only one that heard that! ha
Savage A17 shoots 17 hmr. Excellent reliability, accuracy in an auto loader. Kinda picky about what it shoots best but I’ve been getting 3/4 to 1 inch groups at 75 yards.
I’ve got the Marlin and although it has a smooth wood stock and absolutely no features it’s one of my favourite rifles. (No problems with it ever and I’ve fired 200rds in a day on more then one occasion. I have close to 3,000 flawless rounds out of it. The magazines however are soft and definitely shouldn’t be mishandled or dropped.
I have the savage A17 and love shooting it.
Pretty sure they make an A22 which is a 22 magnum to!
@@kennyorlikowski7704 Mmmmmmm, .22 magnum. 🤤
Can concur - picky on ammo. I’ll add that the trigger is way too heavy to be called an “accutrigger” but it is still an accurate rifle.
Great video Ron, I love the .22lr but for me with the added range and knock down power the 17 hmr is very impressive and my go to rifle for small game. The CCI 20gn gamepoint ammo is brilliant as it opens up but still drills holes. I have punched holes through 4mm mild steel plates with it.
If you're considering which way to go for small game, you won't go wrong with the .17 HMR. I have one and the accuracy and range is far beyond what the tiny round should be capable of. It's ability to humanely dispatch varmint is also exceptional.
Just got me a 17hmr yesterday it is awesome i also own a 22 mag as well I like it as well but I use my .223 Remington for coyotes but a 17hmr or 22 mag will do it!!
Especially with Remington magnum ammo. Great rifle, great caliber. Curious to see if I can take some small piglets. Nicer meat.
Ron, thank you very kindly for your videos. I've spent considerable time watching these as well as the old Legends stuff. Fan for sure. It'd sure be cool to watch you do some more shooting!
Really enjoying these calibre reviews mate
I'm really surprised there isn't a lever action in that WSM with a box magazine. That oughta be a great combination...faster than a bolt gun without the issues of an autoloader.
Again, another well done , fact based presentation Ron. I appreciate the way you weave in useful information such as the spinning of the cartridge to settle the priming compound. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Brock.
I own quite a few rimfires as well as a Savage A17 Heavy Barrel chambered in 17HMR. Absolutely love this little rifle, lights out accurate and have not had any repeating issues as long as I run quality ammo.
No love for the forgotten middle child, 5mm Remington Rimfire Magnum? My Dad passed down a model 592M to me and it is a bonnie, beauty, and joy forever.
Why didn't the 5rem take off?
Rhubarb, only so much time and resources available, so I opted to not include the obsolete cartridges. I'm surprised no one has lambasted me for failing to cover the 44 Henry Flat, 32 Long Rifle, 56-50 Spencer and a dozen other old rimfires!
@@RonSpomerOutdoors oh and how dare you neglect the infamous 9mm Flobert! Haha. When my boots are on North American soil again, I wouldn't have an issue sending my rifle to an FFL near you for you to use and review, should you desire to do so.
@@RonSpomerOutdoors Ron, I don't think any of us are meaning to "lambast" you. I think we are just more of a curious lot and love to hear you talk about such things. Older obsolete cartages hold a special curiosity for a lot of us,..
@@RonSpomerOutdoors the 5mm isn't nearly as "obsolete" as the others you mentioned.
You can still buy 5mm ammo off the shelf.
The 5mm Remington is an amazing round. I read that Remington wouldn't release the patent on the ammo. That's why it did not take off. I love my 5mm and all my rimfires. Thanks for a great video.
Knew a guy who had a Rem 5mm and swore by it. His biggest issue was locating a box of ammo before he shot up what he had on hand which wasn't much.
My cousin has one and loves it but finding ammo if I find ammo I buy it for him the only stuff I have found is Aguila
@@michaelthiboutot7944 They are amazing little rifles and rounds. Aguilla is it for ammo, unless you can find original Remington boxes.
Thanks Ron, I really appreciate and enjoy your commentaries on different rifle ammunition, God bless 🤙🏽
Ron,
I have a Love/Hate relationship with your videos. I love them because they're so informative and well done. I hate them because every time I watch one of your videos I find myself wanting another gun.
Great video, thanks for sharing.

Love my 17hmr.. very accurate and fun to shoot
About the 22WMR and the accuracy of the same. I have an Anshutz 1518 Mannlicher with the double set triggers. When I bought it in Germany, it was a pleasure to shoot, and very accurate. When I got it back to the World, I enjoyed shooting it with a Weaver B4 scope, seeing three-quarter inch, five shot groups. Then, I ran out of RWS ammo, and could not find any more. Tried Winchester (the inventer, remember?) Instant 3 inch, 3 shot groups. I put the gun away for almost 20 years. When CCI came out with the MaxiMag+V, it was magical. Now I have RWS and CCI. Moral: Ammunition choice is critical to be able to maximize accuracy. The WMR can be very accurate.
This is a excellent video....Great job Ron....Thanks my friend....!
Thank you Ron for the work you put in. Always enjoy the presentations.
Very welcome
.22 Magnum is an excellent round out to 125-150 yards. Beyond that range I will reach for a .223 or .22-250.
Thanks Ron. Rimfires let us shoot without the cost typically associated with centerfires making shooting much less of a financial burden.
5 mm Remington rimfire. Was a great rimfire. Most people never know existed. Love it.
Love your videos! Thank you for taking the time to make them.
Savage has the A17 in the 17 HMR auto loader. Beautiful piece
Yes, that is a good one. Smart cycling system they came up with.
I second that. It’s a fun rifle, and so far very reliable.
Excellent presentation, Ron. You're a great speaker. I think rimfires are the most fun cartridges to shoot, although I don't get to do it often enough. Limited recoil, noise, but easy on the budget and super accurate.
I purchased a heavy barrel for my 10-22 years ago in Aguila 17. It feeds great out of the standard 22 mags. A little fussy to load the mags because the bullet is so small to hold onto. Shoots great!
Sub 1/2" groups at 50yrds.
Great job. VERY informative.
Yeah, if it's early season and you're working a hickory they're cutting on, subsonic 22lr is hard to beat for squirrels. Later on when you're stalking the woods, 17 Mach 2 is king. My Mach 2 CZ 452 Varmint is a tack driver.
You got that right!
Hunting alone, ranges, generally less than 50yds, shelved the .22lr and used an airgun (neighbors didn't notice 'wire chewing little pests getting light on the roof). Worked ok.
Thank you Mr spomer, you my new favorite u tuber regards from South Africa 🇿🇦 great information videos👌
Thanks Jorge.
I love my 5mm Remington rimfire magnum. And yes aquila is making the ammo again, they was also behind one of the older companies that made it years ago as well.
I had a 5mm in early 70 and loved it for ground hog . Ended up selling it when amo was stopped being made . Loved it .
Another great video....Love your comments on the Mach2...so glad that one made a comeback.....i dare to say it is the PERFECT squirrel gun....i'm not sure how it could be improved upon for anything squirrel sized
Couldn't agree more!
Thanks for all the information!!!! Love the channel. The 22lr or my 22mag is always my go to round when fishing or walking around in the woods with the hounds.
Great video !! Love the way you share information.
Savage makes an autoloader for .17 hmr, buddy has one and has had success, didnt jam while I shot it, although I'm seeing mixed reviews online
I love my auto shoots fine
Really, I may need to get one. My favourite caliber is .22lr but .17hmr is a very close second. I love bigger stuff of course but tiny rounds are just so cool to me.
Savage A17, great with 20 grain pills. Love mine
@@hoglefish i emailed desert dog about my auto 17 but never heard from him. I heard he was sick. Maybe thats why
Great video ,thanks for the 5mm mention ,their great. I have rifles ina all the mentioned cal. And 17 HMR rules. That’s my opinion. I got stuck with one of the early savage rifles for the 17 WSM. So it’s hard to judge the cartridge till I get a rifle that works from a company that cares. Thanks for sharing.
I had reasonable perfoermance from the Ruger 77/17 in WSM when it first came out. Current users report the latest models are quite accurate. I've got my M85 Winchester/Browning single-shot shooting MOA and slightly better. Accurate 17 WSMs are out there!
Excellent marksmanship, Ron! Great work!
Extremely friendly likeable personality
Extremely educational and informative

Oh this is gonna be a good one
I have a 17 mach 2 and absolutely love it. It's my go to squirrel/rabbit/small varmint rifle. It doesn't make much noise and it has great precision and reach. For a while I about ran out of ammo. I picked up every box I could find of it. Now I probably have enough to last the rest of my life! Either way, not a popular round, but it's a great one for its intended purpose in my opinion.
I bought 6 box's of hmr from gunbroker and for 3 of the box's are Mach 2
17 Mach 2 is an absolute awesome round. My go to for small game hunting.
17hm2 is my favorite rimfire round, great cartridge
Such a stellar round!
Always enjoyable to listen to Ron.
Incredibly practical stuff!
Great video Ron, as an owner of many 22’s 22wmr 17 Hmr’s and a 17wsm i find my 17wsm savage b mag to be the most accurate with a close 2nd to my cz 455 night sky, I use my 17wsm for pretty much everything from gophers to coyotes, it’s my go to beaver gun, I use to believe nothing could beat a 22wmr for beaver head shots, my super mag proved me wrong this spring it does damage, I even stretched a few out just over 200 yards this spring across long ponds on calm nights, not sure why the WSM gets a bad wrap I’ve shot 1000’s of rounds through mine and it’s still accurate as hell
I have a cz 17 hmr 452 tack driver . It took 3 tries to get a 17wsm that would shoot accurate. It's a fluted barrell savage and l don't use the cz any more. Love my Wsm
I still have never seen a box of .17wsm, and I shoot .22wmr, so I’m in that section, often. Never once seen 50 let alone 1,000
I have a hm2 and absolutely love it.
I got 5 different 17m2 and I love to shoot grey and fox squirrels with them.
Should I have gotten the .17 HMR.
As usual, very informative and excellent video sir!
Lots of info to digest in this rimfire overview Ron. I learned much about the 17 Mach2 / 17HMR / 17WSM.
Good vid. Love the little 17’s. I’ve got a Savage Model 93 in 17HMR, and it’s an absolute laser. The only trouble is it cracks cases when fired. It doesn’t do it all the time, but rather in little groups, but it only seems to do it with the Winchester ammo. Sometimes the cracking is limited to the neck, and sometimes the crack goes from the neck right down to the rim. My mate has a different brand rifle, and he has the same issue. He’s been in contact with Winchester, and they aren’t remotely interested. It doesn’t affect accuracy, but you have to keep a cleaning rod handy in case you have to knock out a spent cartridge.
I really like the idea of the 17WSM, but it has gained absolutely zero traction here in Australia. People do have them, and those that have them love them, but there’s not much choice in rifle manufacturers or ammunition, and the ammo is a bit hard to find and can be a tad pricey. And that is all a real shame, because I think that rifle would have kicked along just nicely. Unfortunately, I think, down here anyway, the 17WSM will be consigned to the ranks of “Boutique” caliber, and the rifles and ammo will surge in price and just disappear, which, as I said, is a real shame. Cheers from Down Under.
Here in the States, the 17 WSM is hanging on to a meger existence. You can find ammo if you look for it. I really hope it picks up in popularity because it's such a fun and rewarding cartridge to shoot. At 400 yards on a fairly windy day I managed to group around 1 MOA with a Savage B-MAG. My buddy with his .224 Valkyrie could not do better.
I had the same issue after trying the CCI .17 HMR rounds: split cases. I switched back to Hornady V-Max rounds and haven't seen the problem since. In my case, it was clearly the CCI ammo, which proved to be less accurate too.
Savage A17 is amazing Auto Loader for 17HMR. very accurate.
Sold my CZ mach2 when I couldnt find ammo anymore. Stopped using 22 and 17HMR when I started using my air rifles for squirrel hunting.
Dont forget about the 22 WRF that came before the 22 magnum! I love my winchester 1890 pump chambered for it, great squirrel round
Yes, I was waiting for him to mention the WRF. They fit and fire just fine in the .22 WMR chamber. They use a heavier bullet than the .WMR, I think around 45 grains.
Yep. Great little forgotten cartridge. 45 gr bullet running around 1550 fps. Great for small game n chuckin
I have a friend that got a ton of 22 WRF ammo from a old store that closed and had it in the back. He shot it in his 22 mag just fine and had a lot of fun with them. Free ammo is always fun though lol
Same as 22 Remington special
I think the 17 WSM would've been better, ballistically and favorably, if it been a .204" bullet and called the 5mm WSM.
Absolutely- Winchester missed a great opportunity there. But bear in mind that this is the company that gave us the 325 WSM instead of a 338
A 20 cal version would be a great little cartridge. I think the .17 gets a bit too light on the bullet weight and 5mm would be perfect.
Thought this was about rim fire's
@@robertfandel9442 It is.
Since I have discovered your videos, I have been enjoying the education. Your presentations are full of interesting and useful information. Thank you!
brother I LOVE your channel!!! It's fun taking a look back at the firearms of my youth and all the wonderful memories of hunting as a kid
I absolutely LOVE my 17 HMR (savage)its my most accurate rifle I own. Everyone i let shoot it falls in love and usually buys one. I loved it so much i bought a newer version of the same rifle the other day and cant wait to scope and shoot it. I wont break any world distance records of course. But i can get on a 8’ paper plate at 238 yds every single time. But 150 yards and in i can put most of the rounds in the same hole or next to it.
You should be able to do that with most high powered rifle rounds lol
Very interesting points on the Mach 2. There is almost nothing for guns or ammo locally though for the Mach 2 (Saskatchewan) and the HMR is BY FAR the more popular .17 round here.
I recently bought a CZ 457 in .22 WMR and boooooy does it ever shoot! Consistent 5 shot groups under a half inch at 100 yards with 30gr V-Max. The good old '22 mag' still holds her own I think. Excellent video as usual 👍 thanks for what you do!
CZ knows how to build a Rimfire rifle. They'll shoot just as fine as a bench gun in the same caliber.
Yup! My Anshutz likes the MaxiMag+V. One ragged hole 3-shot groups are common at 100M.
I love the detail Ron, thanks
Very welcome
Good information as always Ron. Love your videos. Here in Sweden the ammo prices on the 17 hmr is ridiculous. Around 30 dollars for a box of 50 rounds. I think the prices for 6.5x55 is nearly the same. The 22lr is my choise but the 17 hmr is pretty popular on Grouse up in the mountains because the long distance an flatter trajectory. 22 wmr seams to be quite dead due to problems with finding the right ammo that will shoot good and tight at 80 yards and beyond, and ammo prices are little bit cheaper then 17hmr but not much.
@Chris Deaven 11-13 dollars sounds good, if we had those prices in Sweden for the 17hmr I would have got one. Seems to be quite devastating round on small critters.
Holy smokes , I'm rich . 😳
Grouse is what I use 17HMR for here in Canada. They dont fly much, mostly freeze and rely on camouflage. 20-30 yards all you need is a consistently accurate rifle that can hit a 1/2" target (head shot). It is expensive yes. I can tolerate the price for hunting, I wouldnt spend too much time target shooting with that. That's where the 22LR is king
Should make a video of the smaller centerfires, 22 hornet, 221 fireball, 218 bee..
For comparison, the 22 hornet has the same energy/velocity at 100 yards as the 22 wmr at muzzle.
I'm a bit in love with the ugly ducking wich is the hornet, small caliber, works up to 150-200 yards depending on load and cheap (when reloading) as there is 9-13 grain powder depending on powder type.
We'll get to those.
I’m with you on the Hornet. Really like that little cartridge.
Don't forget the 222 Remington magnum. The king of the. 22 line up. The 17 hornet would be nice to see.
@@brianhoxworth3881 isnt the 222 remmag almost exactly like the 223? case volume is like 5% smaller on the 223.. Never seen one live. Otoh 223 is quite uncommon in sweden, the 222 has reign supreme since it came.

.221 Fireball? Man, that brings me back to being a kid rifling through the Remington catalog and ogling their XP-100 space pistol that I knew I would never own since my dad only owned "utilitarian" firearms in "useful" calibers.
Awesome video. Thanks again for your great choices and the time you take doing these videos
Thank you very much!
Thanks Ron! Luuuve it!
Being honest in all of my experiences the 22 lr an the 22 mag always perform the best at taking game. They may not have the speed and accuracy. But critters don't make it back into the hole and get lost.
Sametime I am aeat hunter those 17s blow up to much meat on squirrels and rabbits. Plus they don't take groundhogs bobcats fox coyotes beavers without 2 shots. Then the pelts are ruined. The meat is also ruined enough we can't feed my friends bear dogs or his pet bear. Cuz we don't want them to get copper or lead cutting them inside. The 22s are an all around safer bet for how and what we do. Same time I'm sad to see you didn't say anything about the 5mm rim fire. Not comment here in the states but I own 4 of them and it's honestly a fun gun to shoot when I find ammo. It gives me that happy medium between a 22 long and a 22lr for how I've played with it.
You forgot about the 5 mm Remington
Watch the entire video. He mentions it toward the end of the video.
I learned to shot using 22 shorts at Boy Scout camp. All my odd job money during the year went into a jar for bullets at Boy Scout Camp every summer. While others were canoeing and swimming I was banging away at targets in the rifle range earning every marksmanship award the BSA, at that time (a million years ago), had to offer. I learned so much during those weeks. Mostly, I learned that even a 22 short should never be taken for granted. I am a huge gun rights, 2nd amendment, advocate, but what I learned during my summers from 11-17 makes me keep even my 22 short chambers rifle and ammunition in my gun safe.
I appreciate how much you emphasize gun safety even in how you place your rifles on the table beside you, breeches open.
As high as my affection is for 22 caliber weapons, my aversion to them is the near (actual, really) impossibility of reloading them in my shop. Everytime I take one to the range I think I am being wasteful. I collect my brass, it’s just a habit, but there isn’t anything I can do with it.
I have never asked and received a good answer, do 22 caliber, and I suppose 17 caliber, ammunition manufacturers melt down all or any used brass and make the cases from scratch each time? Or is there a way to reload them?
Thank you for this educational presentation.
Marlin in .17 HMR is my go-to bird hunting rifle (ruffed grouse). Love the rimfires! Just about everyone started with 22LR. Perfectly simple!

Quickly becoming one my favorite channels. Ron really is THE straight shooter. Poly tip bullets really have allowed rimfires to come in to their own. The 22 WRF and 5mm Remington did not have superior bullets to make them special. Keep up the good work Ron!
Thanks Hillbilly. I intend to continue offering sound information and advice based on objective reality with but a smattering of personal bias sneaking it from time to time.
@@RonSpomerOutdoors if a little personal bias didn’t creep in now and then you wouldn’t be human.
Ron, That was excellent!
Great video man!
I would love to know more about the 22 Hornet. Tia. Great knowledge.
Love your channel for caliber education
I have a CZ .22 wmr and shoot Hornady v-max 30 gr. 2200 fps. Love it!
What a great presentation. I'm always impressed, but never surprised.
Impeccable Contender!...and in the hands of someone who deserves the title: 'Rifleman'
I recently bought a 17wsm. I love it.
