  • Although this video is focusing on new riders in Ontario Canada, the basic principals on how to prepare for your motorcycle written test is the same across provinces. You can find practice tests for a number of Canadian provinces listed here: www.drivingtest.ca/motorcycle...
    How do you go about getting your motorcycle license in Ontario, Canada?
    1) Review the official MTO Motorcycle Handbook for free here: www.ontario.ca/document/offic... OR purchase/download a copy here: www.publications.gov.on.ca/th...
    2) Once you have studied, test your knowledge by taking free online tests here: www.drivingtest.ca/ontario-m1... . You will want to make sure that you are confident in passing both the tests labelled as "Signs" and the ones labelled as "Rules".
    Once you complete your M1 written test successfully, you can immediately take a ministry approved motorcycle safety course to qualify for your M2 license. Or, you can wait until 60 days have passed and take your road test at a Drive Test Center. Either way, a Drive Test Center needs to upgrade your license to an M2, and if you pass your course before 60 days have passed you will have to wait to upgrade your license. The course certificate is only valid for 6 months, so don't delay upgrading your license!

      Went last week and I will tell you all what it consisted of;
      1. Eye test: put eyes to VR type headset, read a 6 digit number that was pretty easy to read. Then they go back and forth with a flashing light and you call left or right (to check peripherals obviously) then it was done. Literally 15 seconds.
      2. Written test in computer: it was actually 64 questions. There was three sections; 20 signs, 20 rules of the road, and 24 motorcycle I believe.. either way all close to 20 a piece.
      Then you’re done. It’ll tell you on the screen if you passed or failed. If you passed you go to desk to get your temporary licence printed. If you fail, you walk by everyone with your head down in pure shame.
      Luckily I passed :)
      Wasn’t hard, but study the book. A lot of common sense questions, but read them carefully as they can be worded funny sometimes. Take your time, no time limit.
      I did the test in Woodstock, Ontario.
      Hope that helps :)

    Hi There Jim, I am just starting out my journey into motorcycling, (I used to ride as a youngster on a dirt bike, it was a Suzuki 750, big bike I know for just a kid, haha) I haven't ridden since those days but have been an avid cyclist for most of my life, (I have three bicycles) so its my passion as well...I plan on taking the exit course at Motorsoul in the near future for the licensing process. Do you have a video on the different courses/schools that offer the program?
    Anyway, thanks for these instructional videos I've watched a couple and they are very helpful so thanks for taking the time to share!
    Ride on!
    Trevor

      Hi Trevor. Congratulations on getting your license and signing up for the M1 Exit course! You can find a full list of approved M1 Exit courses to get your M2 license in Ontario here: www.ontario.ca/page/government-approved-motorcycle-safety-courses
      I wouldn’t want to comment on which schools are better, as I was an instructor at one of them so I would be very biased! What you can do when booking your course is ask the school what kind of training their instructors get before they start teaching. Good luck with the course and all the best!

      @CaledoniaKeys  Год назад

      Thanks for the kind words. I just recently took a break from teaching the M1 Exit course this year. If you check out Rider Training Institute they are one recommendation I have for the course. The instructors all need to pass an instructor training course before they even go on the lot to teach. The year I took the course many didn’t make the cut. If RTI is not an option, I would suggest asking the training school what requirements and training they have for their instructors. You deserve the best training that you can get and your safety actually depends on it. Take care and ride on!

    Thank you for the great video. Naive question: Is this true that there is a limit to rewrite M1 written test? It is not mentioned in official Ontario website but I have read online that failing to pass M1 written test after 3 times will never allow one to write it again?

    • @CaledoniaKeys
      @CaledoniaKeys  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the question (not naive at all). There is no limit to the number of times you can rewrite the M1 test in Ontario (the website you saw is wrong). It is always a good idea to check the official Drivetest website and/or call to confirm if any requirements are unclear.
      That said, most people stress over the test but if you read the book and do the practice tests you will likely only be in once. A friend of mine was so nervous I told him I would pay the $15 if he failed (he passed with flying colours).
      Good luck and let me know how it goes!

    My M2 recently expired (my own fault for delaying) i forgot the expiry date, however, when i called service ontario to find out about the expiration date, she advised me it was good until july of this year. When i called drive test to book a road test for my M, they said my M2 has expired. I now have to start over from M1. I don't wanna take the safety course again. Do i still have to take two road test ?

    • @CaledoniaKeys
      @CaledoniaKeys  Год назад +1

      Hi Matt…that completely sucks and M2 licenses expiring happens more often than you think. Unfortunately you do have to redo the test for your M1. You can do that at a DriveTest centre or maybe consider taking the M1 Exit course as a skills refresher with a bonus license renewal.
      This is the official link with details including the expiration of your M2.

    Do I have to do a test on a bike for my m1? I plan on just getting the m1 then doing the m2 course and test after. Do I need insurance on my bike while doing the m2 test?

    • @CaledoniaKeys
      @CaledoniaKeys  2 года назад +4

      The M1 is just a written test. The M1 Exit (which gets you your M2) requires testing on a motorcycle. That said if you are doing a course the bikes are often provided and ideally there will be a few different ones you can try out (cruiser, standard, sport, and enduro). If you do your test only at the MTO you will need your own bike.

    My father bought me a dirtbike when I was 3. I started riding immediately and rode for about 15 years. I am now almost 30, having a motorcycle has been a dream of mine since I was a kid.
    My issue is that I am already confident on a bike, do you think my experience going fast through the bush will translate into bad habits on the road? My jeep is getting expensive to drive around.

    • @CaledoniaKeys
      @CaledoniaKeys  Год назад

      Dirt bike experience is a huge plus. As long as you understand that street riding is not quite the same and are open to learning some new skills you should be great. My advice is just try to stay a bit humble and keep in mind that riding the back trails you don’t usually have to worry about the cagers out there! Glad you are realizing your dreams and getting on the road!

  • @joshuak4372
    @joshuak4372 Год назад +1

    I just don’t have the time to do the courses even if it is the best option. But trying to get insured with an m1 sounds pricey. I assume you have to bring your own bike to the drive test?

    • @CaledoniaKeys
      @CaledoniaKeys  Год назад

      Yes. If you do the test at the DriveTest centre to get your M2 you will need to bring your own bike. The M1 Exit (to get your M2) licensing course is a commitment of one weekend and a few hours of theory. Day 2 you actually do your test as part of the course.
      Many schools offering the licensing course provide the bikes for you. Check out Rider Training Institute here: ridertraining.ca/get-started
      There are other schools of course. When checking them out ask what the training requirements are for the instructors and if they supply the motorcycles. This topic is going to require a whole new video! 😎

    Hello;
    During the year, which time is good to get M1 and M2 license?
    That means I want to get my m1 license on 17th of February, then I can make an appointment for m2 on 17th of April?

    • @CaledoniaKeys
      @CaledoniaKeys  Год назад +1

      Thanks for your question. I would recommend taking an M1 Exit course through a qualified school to get your M2 license. If you go this route you can book your course ahead of time and take the M1 written test 60 days before the course. Keep in mind that as soon as you pass the M1 Exit course you qualify for your M2, but you still have to wait 60 days from the date of your M1 license before the MTO will upgrade your license. This advice is considering that you want to take your M1 test in the off season and schedule your course as soon as possible in the spring. Otherwise you can technically take the course the day after you have your M1 and then just wait the 60 days to get your license upgraded. For MTO testing you will need to wait to test. Good luck and Ride On!

    • @CaledoniaKeys

      While you have your M1 you are restricted to roads with a maximum speed limit of 80 km except for a few exceptions listed in the official MTO Motorcycle Handbook.

    • @CaledoniaKeys

      You do not need any other class of license to get an M1. The M1 is a license on its own specific to motorcycles. Once you have that you have 90 days to pass your test and receive the M2 license as outlined in the video. Thanks for checking out the channel!
