How To Change Your Motorcycle Oil and Save Cash - Triumph America Synthetic Oil Change (AMSOIL)
In this video I go through a simple DIY Oil change on a Triumph America. I am a former motorcycle instructor and a rider who loves bikes. I am not a mechanic. That said, you really don't need to be a mechanic to master many of the basic DIY skills that come along with owning a motorcycle.
I recommend fully synthetic AMSOIL motorcycle oil. I was a consumer before I became an Independent AMSOIL dealer, and I would not recommend anything that I don't fully believe in. For a limited time, contact me at FiveStarEngineOil.com and ask how to get a free AMSOIL preferred customer membership!
That said, there are a lot of opinions out there so you do you. The main rules I would keep in mind are these...

We will look at the options and some of the pros and cons of each one. Each state or province will have some laws and processe...

Triumph America Winter Ride & Thoughts After 25K+

These are my thoughts on my Triumph America after 25,000 km as I took my first ride of the year. I bought this bike used a few years back, but it only had 39 km on the odometer, which was the distance the original owner had between his place and the Triumph dealership where he bought it. I would consider this a mini review with some of the pros and cons I have found with this bike since I have ...

Motorcycle Test Rides at a Dealer?

This video was done at the time that I took out the Pan America Special for a 24 hour test ride. Since I have seen so many posts on social media related to buying motorcycles and not being able to test ride them first, I thought I would just ask the dealer what the test ride requirements are to take a bike out on the road. Yes this is a Harley Dealership, but I do know that other dealerships al...

Haha, I had just taken mine out of the package, struggled to find the screw, and thought there must be a video about this. Thanks so much
Thank you very much for bothering to make this video!!! It saved me me from excessive drinking!
@@BMProvenzano Glad to help…although I would not be opposed to one beer 🍺 😎
Nice vid. Im planning to buy it this week. Cheers
Congratulations and enjoy your new ride!
Thanks a lot
Happy to help.
In my early 60s now, been riding since I was 18. Have had too many bikes to begin to list. But after 2 surgeries on my shoulder, I found maneuvering a 900 lbs Electra glide with the wife to be on the back, to be too much weight to handle in parking lots and in my driveway. So reluctantly, I sold it and picked up a very nice 2018 Harley Freewheeler ( trike) and love it. After a year of ownership, I started to miss the feeling of leaning into curves, something that you don't do on a trike. So I just picked up a 2012 Triumph Speedster with around 13,000 kms on it. Only had the opportunity to ride it 2 times as the weather is crap this sprin in Alberta, but so far I really enjoy the lightweight and nimbleness of this bike. Similar to the Kawasaki 900 LT that I had several years ago. I just ordered a Slipstream windshield/fairing , as the small windshield that came with the bike was causing a lot of helmet buffeting. At this point in my life, being comfortable is more important than looking cool. I still plan on keeping the Freewheeler, as we plan on doing some travel this summer and it is perfect for two up riding and long distance comfort especially for the lady. Enjoyed your review on this America. Since my bike did not come with a manual, what are the 2 rubber buttons on the dash there for? I don't know if they are covers or some kind of switch. Cheers from Northern Alberta.😎
The rubber plugs on the dash are for optional accessories. Since you mentioned that you don’t have a manual, you might be interested to know thatyou can get one online from Triumph: www.triumph-motorcycles.ca/owners/manuals Thanks for the added perspective and congratulations for experiencing the best of 2 and 3 wheels! Ride on!
@@CaledoniaKeys Thanks for the link, downloaded the user manual from it. The new windshield should be here in a few days and hopefully the rain and cool weather changes as well so that I can get out and enjoy the Triumph.
PS: mine also came with a set of Viking hard saddlebags, much nicer than leather soft bags, Bice to be able to lock them and they look somewhat waterproof too.
@@peterlecuyer6204 Glad I could help out. Fingers crossed on the weather!
@@peterlecuyer6204 I had added the Viking bags myself. The bags themselves were great, but the hardware that comes standard with them is not the greatest. After a couple of years the one bolt sheared itself so my one bag was hanging by a bolt. Now I recommend the bags, but suggest upgrading the hardware at your local fastener shop.
I bought a new 2015 America LT in January 2016. It runs smooth and quiet (totally stock), and comfortable on longer rides (for me, a couple or few hundred miles). I have 7022 miles on it, and the only complaint I have is that it is so smooth and quiet that I miss the thrill of riding a louder bike with vibrations such as my 1980 Yamaha XS 650. Nevertheless, a nice looking, pretty high-quality fit and finish bike that always works (well, so far anyway).
If you really want a louder exhaust there may be some options out there with some aftermarket slip ons. Unfortunately I don’t have first hand experience on this one for the America. Thanks for commenting.
The manual is not well written!
Love the Amsoil! Got it in my 2003 Bonneville America and my other vehicles!!
Thanks for checking out the channel. I expect you are a preferred customer already, but if not I am happy to help.
Yessir!! I’m actually a dealer myself! Thank you though!
Bought my 2002 Triumph America in 2007. It had 600 miles on it and I paid 5000$ for it. Have no complains with the drive train. Low and easy maintenance. Windshield, footboards to and bags and it works as either a Saturday cruiser or short range touring. I put a wider front tire, a gummier Avons on it. A fatter front tire helps stabilize it a bit at higher speeds. I truly wish steering dampeners were available. Has enough power for my needs. And I got the classic Black And Silver. My bike is one of the last Triumphs built in the original factory, before it burnt down. . It is a pretty tough bike, I don't spend a lot of time washing and polishing. If it's a nice enough day to polish it , it's a nice enough day to ride it . I started out way back in the early sixties at ten on a cub. Rode a lot of Triumph until they went belly up. Rode a 75 Harley Fl until 2002 . How does this compare. It doesn't. Different bikes for different purposes. Still Avery good bike. Keep the shiney side up.
Thanks for sharing. Ride on!
Thank you!!! Would’ve never thought to pull the blue thing off!
Glad it helped. Thanks for the note
You get a thumbs up for no "old man" groans kneeling down to reach the drain plug or filter hehehe. If I made a video like this first it would be the rifle snaps from my knees, then the groan as I got down, then? "someone help me up" hahahaha. When I drop something in my shop I pause "how bad do I want it"? 🙂
Sounds like a great excuse to pick up a motorcycle lift table! I can’t help with that, but check out fivestarengineoil.com for your oil and filter! Thanks for commenting.
@@CaledoniaKeys I was looking at them last fall, then my biz partner (handles warehousing I handle production) was talking about getting a mini forklift. Me: yes yes yes
8:42 if you don't have any friends (like me) pick up a mirror on a telescoping handle. Bought 1 from amazon for $4. Mine even came with lights! Sit on your back, stand up it off the kickstand and extend the mirror. I don't know WHY makers won't just install a freaking dipstick on the filler cap.....
2:33 I've run into similar situations and? a LOONEY fits perfect with a pair of channel lock pliers. I've also used quarters and vice grips from time to time.
A little ingenuity goes a long way sometimes. Sometimes it seems like the engineers are just messing with us 😀
@@CaledoniaKeys I know right? I had to change the clutch plates on my 1975 honda 400/4 and it used a special socket that had 6 prongs sticking out and the "nut" had 6 indents. Me talking to a honda mech: why wouldn't they just use a hex nut? Him: I dunno, there's no reason not to. You must be old enough to remember McBride Cycle in Toronto? I lived just north of there, spent many an hour in that place.
You're not alone; I felt like an idiot too; hence why I'm watching your video. Thanks.
Glad it helped. Thanks for the note.
Great review and I'm going to call my insurance and see what they say. I called last year about an FJR1300 and they wanted $1200....that's on TOP of my vstar AND my pickup. I said "you realize I can't drive all three at the same time right"? "yes we take that into consideration. Yeah, I was born at night but not LAST night. The thing about parts: yeah might be an issue down the road (pun intended haha) but it sure isn't shying people away from victory and the whole line's been killed for years. Not to mention in 2024+ you can pretty much get anything made that you might need. Another thing about the 1200: it's gone liquid cooled. On a big tourer ok, but I'm a purest I guess. Been riding air cooled since the 70's so that's my "thing". Not to mention the look of a big honking radiator out front. Some manufacturers don't even bother to try and integrate it they just bolt something up front. Not to mention you're cruising along miles from no where and get a wheel nut or piece of gravel through the rad and you're toast. Air cooled? It'd just bounce off.
My mantra is for the most part “simpler is better” so I completely hear you on the air cooled bikes! One fewer things to take care of! Good luck with the insurance…would love to hear how it went. Ride on!
@@CaledoniaKeys Hey bud: just talked to ridersplus, seems the triumph is the same price as my vstar 1100 at $90/month. I can insure both for $183 Crazy considering you can't ride both at the same time and we can only ride here for about 5 months of the year. Specially crazy considering in FLA, I know someone who has full coverage on a Harley Ultra Glide for $385 per year AND they can ride all year. We get SO ripped off for insurance here in Canada. I mean, I've been riding accident free for almost 50 yrs.
1:51 I bought a helmet lock that bolts onto the handle bars. Put it right between the 2 mounts. I looked at the side mount ones, thought people might start tossing litter into them (happened to me a lot when I was in my teens).
Interesting idea…that hasn’t happened to me yet thankfully. Thanks for checking out the channel.
@@CaledoniaKeys I had a 400/4 honda, rode that thing everywhere. Had the helmet hook under the seat and at least once a day had an empty chip bag or something in it. Prob cuz it was an open face with no visor, people looked at it as a target! Same now as my pickup, w/o fail someone's always throwing crap in the back.
My Street glide began to be too much for me once I was in my mid-60s. Picked up a used Triumph America and it was a game changer. I love it. I just turned 70 and still riding comfortably and confidently! I love my Triumph America
That’s awesome! A solid mid sized cruiser like the Triumph America can be a great alternative to someone who feels the touring bike is a bit heavy but doesn’t want to go with 3 wheels. Glad you are loving it! Ride on!
Thanks, I almost forced the wrong spot on the cover before watching the video

Typical. A bike everyone who's had one loved so Triumph discontinued it! Dumb!!

Don’t give up! I still see these pop up for sale on occasion. Thanks for sharing!
I’m a 72yo male that has ridden all brands and styles of motorcycles. I sold my Honda Goldwing as I feared it had become just too much for me to handle. I bought a 2016 Triumph America. I have been pleasantly surprised by the performance and ease of riding the America. I enjoyed your review of the America.

Thank you, it had me puzzled for a while, and you're right, nothing in the instructions lol

Where did you get windshield? I have a 2010 america
The windshield is the stock windshield for the Triumph America LT. When I bought the bike it didn’t have one, so I posted online and found one used from someone who put an aftermarket windshield on. So your local Kijiji or Craigslist. That said, you can have a Triumph dealer or Triumph head office do a search for you to see if there is any old stock remaining.
After 50 years of continual bike riding, I just bought my first cruiser. 2008 Triumph America. Fuel injected, and managed about 435 kilometres to empty. This bike is amazing. The more I ride it, the more I want to!
Congratulations! It is definitely a simple bike with a bulletproof engine. Easy to maintain and a pleasure to ride. I think Triumph screwed up when they discontinued this one. Thanks for checking out the channel.
865, enough hp to have some fun when you need it? It's only 7 hp less than my current bike but 150 lbs lighter so there's that. There's a few for sale in my area, been waiting for decent weather to go look at them.
What idiot designed this.
Thanks bud ... I too was scratching my head. You saved the day. LOL If you think its hard looking fumbly on camera, try doing it in front of your wife's father ... the little things matter. LOL (to me anyways ... maybe I'm just projecting ... LOL)
I can totally relate…you would think it should be simple…and when it’s not easy to figure out an audience doesn’t help! Thanks for commenting.
How would you remove stress cracks out of a1/4” plexiglass
Admittedly I am not an expert on this one. In theory a clear UV type adhesive might be the way to go but I have never done it myself. It flows like water and will get into cracks readily. Excess can be wiped off before applying a UV source to the area. Do a Google on UV adhesive for plastic.
This bike sounds great
Especially for a 250 cc right? 😎
@@CaledoniaKeysyes I think it’s a great setup out of the box. Nothing needed.
is it big enough? Sure! Trouble is with the gearing being 16/45, first gear is a granny while 2nd is more like a true 1st. I rode it stock for ages, then swapped it to a 17 tooth front, and about a year later swapped the rear sprocket to a 40 and a 112 chain; it's like a whole new bike. ~19% gearing change overall. I would recommend it to anyone who's had one for more than a few months.
Interesting idea for those who are considering “upgrading” the bike. Maybe think about upgrading the gearing.
Thank you my man - I truly felt like an idiot trying to sort this out on my own.
We have all been there! Glad to have helped. Thanks for the note!

SAME - Cannot find where the darn battery goes and manual is silent on it.
Thanks for checking in.
I find it disturbing that so many "experts" on RUclips recommend cleaning a sealed (o-ring or x-ring) chain with kerosene and many actually say it is recommended by the chain manufacturers. It is even more disturbing when a bike's owner's manual suggests kerosene. Not a single chain major manufacturer that I could find recommends kerosene for sealed chains and most specifically advise against using it. Kerosene will damage the o or x-rings. From the RK website... "RK Chain recommends cleaning a sealed chain with only a mineral-based O ring safe chain cleaner. Do not use kerosene, mineral spirits, diesel fuel, brake cleaner, motor oil, or any caustic chemicals because that can damage the seals." From the DID website... "D.I.D. does not recommend maintaining any drive chain with kerosene. Cleaning a sealed chain with kerosene would cause deformation of the seal ring and can oftentimes lead to rusting of a chain due to the removal of grease on the chain’s surface, which increases the risk of chain corruption and chain failure. It is highly likely that use of kerosene on a sealed drive chain will drastically decrease the chain's performance."
Point taken. There is definitely conflicting “expert information” out there. When the owner’s manual says use kerosene and one or more chain manufacturers say the opposite it can be a head scratcher. I used kerosene for years, but in fairness I never did a scientific side by side test. Thanks for sharing.
As an older rider in my mid 60s yes the Triumph America is just perfect, weight, seat height, and coming down from a 1700 RoadStar ,,this is just the bike , Parts not a problem at all and tons of accessories available, but I guess living in Ireland helps. Brought up on Triumphs and this is a delight to own and having modern technology makes all the difference.
Thanks for the feedback. I expect geographic location may have a bearing on parts. North America can be a challenge.
I as well, being in same age bracket, thinking the same. What year did you get? I see it doesn't have an ABS in an 07, wondered if they ever have? says R3's started in 2010 in the USA. 09 for Europe? Thanks for any other help, good to know, as yes, a Star 1700 is a sweet bike, and even easier to handle than my 03 BMW K12LT, so good to know there 2.. Cheers!
@@firbyd The Triumph America never did add ABS. Mine was a 2016 and the last model year it was sold. It did have fuel injection which was added around 2008-2009.
ha, you're like the 3rd older rider who has said that. I'm 63 and looking at it for this very reason. I like the weight of my vstar on the highway but find it ungainly puttering around town.
Hi and thank you! I stared at this thing for20 minutes wondering how the heck to put the battery in! Then I thought maybe someone on RUclips can tell me. And there you were. No thanks to Mastercraft for putting it in the instructions! Thank you.

Thanks. The directions in the manual are vague at best.

The windshield sucks
The top of the stock windshield came up to eye level for me. I had considered taking it down a few inches but then I could still see over it. For a long time I just rode it without the windshield which is also an option.
