- Should You Buy A Triumph America or America LT? A 5 Year, 25,000+ km (almost 26K) Review!
Who is this bike for? The Triumph America is a great bike for someone who wants a nice looking ride that doesn't blend in with everyone else. Triumph is a smaller British motorcycle manufacturer with a history that goes back to 1902. The brand is worldwide but at the same time you won't see as many Triumphs on the road as you will Harleys or the Japanese brands.
I was originally drawn to this bike because I love the style and...it was a crazy good deal! 1 year old and 39 km (not thousand) on the odometer. It's a simple, solid motorcycle with a bulletproof engine that just won't let you down! That said, there are a few downsides covered off in the video that you should be aware of...

I bought my 08 America new and have 87,300 miles (not kilo) and it’s been great. Many miles on trips, (every state east of the Mississippi) and looking forward to many more. As for parts, yes the America branding is no longer, it’s the exact same bike as the speedmaster, so there will be parts available for a very long time. Enjoy.
Glad you have shared such a great experience with your America. I couldn’t agree more on the bulletproof design of this bike! Unfortunately, the 865 Speedmaster is also no more (currently a 1200). I personally experienced the challenge of getting parts for my bike and that’s okay. Just something to be aware of when you decide to buy one.

I just purchased my first cruiser after many years of riding. 2012 triumph America..... love the bike , has plenty of power and speed for me.
Great ride i love it but wish it had a fuel gage and easier to find parts and accessories.
After 50 years of continual bike riding, I just bought my first cruiser. 2008 Triumph America. Fuel injected, and managed about 435 kilometres to empty. This bike is amazing. The more I ride it, the more I want to!
Congratulations! It is definitely a simple bike with a bulletproof engine. Easy to maintain and a pleasure to ride. I think Triumph screwed up when they discontinued this one.

865, enough hp to have some fun when you need it? It's only 7 hp less than my current bike but 150 lbs lighter so there's that. There's a few for sale in my area, been waiting for decent weather to go look at them.

I have this bike. It’s awesome. I added ape hangers to it, bomber pipes and it’s a whole new experience. The review is right it’s very easy to maintain. It’s a long wheel base so if your tall is a great ride. Cheap to insure.

My Street glide began to be too much for me once I was in my mid-60s. Picked up a used Triumph America and it was a game changer. I love it. I just turned 70 and still riding comfortably and confidently! I love my Triumph America
That’s awesome! A solid mid sized cruiser like the Triumph America can be a great alternative to someone who feels the touring bike is a bit heavy but doesn’t want to go with 3 wheels. Glad you are loving it! Ride on!

Great review and I'm going to call my insurance and see what they say. I called last year about an FJR1300 and they wanted $1200....that's on TOP of my vstar AND my pickup. I said "you realize I can't drive all three at the same time right"? "yes we take that into consideration. Yeah, I was born at night but not LAST night.
The thing about parts: yeah might be an issue down the road (pun intended haha) but it sure isn't shying people away from victory and the whole line's been killed for years. Not to mention in 2024+ you can pretty much get anything made that you might need.
Another thing about the 1200: it's gone liquid cooled. On a big tourer ok, but I'm a purest I guess. Been riding air cooled since the 70's so that's my "thing". Not to mention the look of a big honking radiator out front. Some manufacturers don't even bother to try and integrate it they just bolt something up front. Not to mention you're cruising along miles from no where and get a wheel nut or piece of gravel through the rad and you're toast. Air cooled? It'd just bounce off.
My mantra is for the most part “simpler is better” so I completely hear you on the air cooled bikes! One fewer things to take care of!

Crazy considering you can't ride both at the same time and we can only ride here for about 5 months of the year.
Specially crazy considering in FLA, I know someone who has full coverage on a Harley Ultra Glide for $385 per year AND they can ride all year.
We get SO ripped off for insurance here in Canada. I mean, I've been riding accident free for almost 50 yrs.
Great video. I have a Goldwing and have cancer so with that I'm loosing muscle mass and won't be able to handle the Wing much longer. I've riden the trikes and don't like the way they ride. I'm definitely looking to go smaller. I've sat on all the mid sized bikes but the Bonneville America and Speedmaster feels the best and you can pick one up with low miles for a really good price. Thanks for the video. As for the butt fatigue on the longer rides I purchased an AirHawk cushion for my Goldwing it is amazing and you can adjust the air in the to ride forever without the butt fatigue.

I’m a 72yo male that has ridden all brands and styles of motorcycles. I sold my Honda Goldwing as I feared it had become just too much for me to handle. I bought a 2016 Triumph America. I have been pleasantly surprised by the performance and ease of riding the America. I enjoyed your review of the America.

I bought a new 2015 America LT in January 2016. It runs smooth and quiet (totally stock), and comfortable on longer rides (for me, a couple or few hundred miles). I have 7022 miles on it, and the only complaint I have is that it is so smooth and quiet that I miss the thrill of riding a louder bike with vibrations such as my 1980 Yamaha XS 650. Nevertheless, a nice looking, pretty high-quality fit and finish bike that always works (well, so far anyway).
If you really want a louder exhaust there may be some options out there with some aftermarket slip ons. Unfortunately I don’t have first hand experience on this one for the America. Thanks for commenting.
Just as you said, suitable for older rider. The large cruisers such as Harleys got to heavy to move around yet I needed forward controls, windshield and bags. Bingo Triumph America LT. So far it’s filling the bill! Mine is a 15 and a duplicate of yours. Found it Jan 23 with 216 one owner miles on it.
Sounds like an awesome find! I know that older riders often transition from a Harley touring bike to a 3 wheeler, but I often wonder if a midsize cruiser like this one might fit the bill for many! I am glad to hear that it has worked out so well for you! Thanks for commenting.

As an older rider in my mid 60s yes the Triumph America is just perfect, weight, seat height, and coming down from a 1700 RoadStar ,,this is just the bike , Parts not a problem at all and tons of accessories available, but I guess living in Ireland helps.
Brought up on Triumphs and this is a delight to own and having modern technology makes all the difference.

I as well, being in same age bracket, thinking the same. What year did you get? I see it doesn't have an ABS in an 07, wondered if they ever have? says R3's started in 2010 in the USA. 09 for Europe? Thanks for any other help, good to know, as yes, a Star 1700 is a sweet bike, and even easier to handle than my 03 BMW K12LT, so good to know there 2.. Cheers!
@@firbyd The Triumph America never did add ABS. Mine was a 2016 and the last model year it was sold. It did have fuel injection which was added around 2008-2009.
ha, you're like the 3rd older rider who has said that. I'm 63 and looking at it for this very reason. I like the weight of my vstar on the highway but find it ungainly puttering around town.
Bought my 2002 Triumph America in 2007. It had 600 miles on it and I paid 5000$ for it. Have no complains with the drive train. Low and easy maintenance. Windshield, footboards to and bags and it works as either a Saturday cruiser or short range touring. I put a wider front tire, a gummier Avons on it. A fatter front tire helps stabilize it a bit at higher speeds. I truly wish steering dampeners were available. Has enough power for my needs. And I got the classic Black And Silver. My bike is one of the last Triumphs built in the original factory, before it burnt down. . It is a pretty tough bike, I don't spend a lot of time washing and polishing. If it's a nice enough day to polish it , it's a nice enough day to ride it . I started out way back in the early sixties at ten on a cub. Rode a lot of Triumph until they went belly up. Rode a 75 Harley Fl until 2002 . How does this compare. It doesn't. Different bikes for different purposes. Still Avery good bike. Keep the shiney side up.

In my early 60s now, been riding since I was 18. Have had too many bikes to begin to list. But after 2 surgeries on my shoulder, I found maneuvering a 900 lbs Electra glide with the wife to be on the back, to be too much weight to handle in parking lots and in my driveway. So reluctantly, I sold it and picked up a very nice 2018 Harley Freewheeler ( trike) and love it. After a year of ownership, I started to miss the feeling of leaning into curves, something that you don't do on a trike. So I just picked up a 2012 Triumph Speedster with around 13,000 kms on it. Only had the opportunity to ride it 2 times as the weather is crap this sprin in Alberta, but so far I really enjoy the lightweight and nimbleness of this bike. Similar to the Kawasaki 900 LT that I had several years ago. I just ordered a Slipstream windshield/fairing , as the small windshield that came with the bike was causing a lot of helmet buffeting. At this point in my life, being comfortable is more important than looking cool. I still plan on keeping the Freewheeler, as we plan on doing some travel this summer and it is perfect for two up riding and long distance comfort especially for the lady. Enjoyed your review on this America. Since my bike did not come with a manual, what are the 2 rubber buttons on the dash there for? I don't know if they are covers or some kind of switch. The rubber plugs on the dash are for optional accessories. Since you mentioned that you don’t have a manual, you might be interested to know thatyou can get one online from Triumph: www.triumph-motorcycles.ca/owners/manuals

@@CaledoniaKeys Thanks for the link, downloaded the user manual from it. The new windshield should be here in a few days and hopefully the rain and cool weather changes as well so that I can get out and enjoy the Triumph.
PS: mine also came with a set of Viking hard saddlebags, much nicer than leather soft bags, Bice to be able to lock them and they look somewhat waterproof too.

@@peterlecuyer6204 I had added the Viking bags myself. The bags themselves were great, but the hardware that comes standard with them is not the greatest. After a couple of years the one bolt sheared itself so my one bag was hanging by a bolt. Now I recommend the bags, but suggest upgrading the hardware at your local fastener shop.
1:51 I bought a helmet lock that bolts onto the handle bars. Put it right between the 2 mounts. I looked at the side mount ones, thought people might start tossing litter into them (happened to me a lot when I was in my teens).

@@CaledoniaKeys I had a 400/4 honda, rode that thing everywhere. Had the helmet hook under the seat and at least once a day had an empty chip bag or something in it. Prob cuz it was an open face with no visor, people looked at it as a target!
Same now as my pickup, w/o fail someone's always throwing crap in the back.
The Seat is made by shad for triumph. It's the best seat I've ever had. The power of the 865 isn't as torquey as my v-star 1100, but it is quicker and handles better. I've had an m109r and I don't feel like the triumph is a step down at all. I love the sound of the triumph too. Beautiful machines
I loved the seat for the most part, and the quality is very good for stock. I only noticed my butt getting a bit sore on those all day multi day rides. This Triumph America has been an awesome bike. Thanks for the comment.
I have a 2014 LT and would like to put an engine guard like yours on it. Is it a Triumph part or aftermarket and where can I get one?
These engine guards were a stock part from my Triumph dealer. Although they look great, the design is actually not the best if you have floorboards. If the bike goes over, your boards are going to take the damage because they hang out further than the guards. I love this bike, but in my opinion the engineers dropped the ball on this part. Nice bike! Any plans for upgrades? Exhaust, Sai removal, tune etc?
Hi Vinnie. I initially just wanted to change the bike back into the LT. It had not even crossed my mind to do SAI removal but I can see the advantage. My main upgrades were aimed at making it a bike I could use for longer trips. Top of the line tires, saddle bags, and a long-haul luggage rack. I did upgrade the chain from an O-ring to an X-ring.
As you will see at the end of the video, my time for upgrading this bike is up. I am going to miss her though!

Where’d you get the back rest and windscreen?
For the backrest I called Triumph directly and asked them to track one down for me at a dealership in Quebec. The windscreen is the OEM Triumph America LT windscreen and I found that on Kijiji (online classifieds). There was another rider who was selling his since he had bought an aftermarket one.
The one downside as you may know: OEM parts are a challenge to find especially with the bike being discontinued and aftermarket is limited.

Where did you get windshield? I have a 2010 america
The windshield is the stock windshield for the Triumph America LT. When I bought the bike it didn’t have one, so I posted online and found one used from someone who put an aftermarket windshield on. So your local Kijiji or Craigslist. That said, you can have a Triumph dealer or Triumph head office do a search for you to see if there is any old stock remaining.

I wish it has 1200 new engine and the new brakes (2 disks on the front wheel and ABS). In this case it could become really good bike. And may be some rear suspension tunning.
The new Speedmaster looks like a toy bike.
I'm riding America 2015 for 4 years with some aftermarket parts and going to switch to something bit more powerfull.
Nice. I road mine for 5 years and just recently made a switch. I didn’t personally see the benefit to the new 1200 Speedmaster, since with the smaller tank the range was no better than I was getting with my America. The brakes for sure could have been better, but then again they did the job, and overall this bike is extremely easy to maintain. The windshield sucks
The top of the stock windshield came up to eye level for me. I had considered taking it down a few inches but then I could still see over it. For a long time I just rode it without the windshield which is also an option.
Typical. A bike everyone who's had one loved so Triumph discontinued it! Dumb!!
