    While you did mention the brutal insurance rates here in Ontario I would suggest to anyone thinking of getting a bike in Ontario DO NOT buy a bike until after you have gotten multiple insurance quotes. There's usually one guy every year posting on the local bike forum that buys the bike first then get's sticker shock when he get's insurance quotes.

I was a bit worried about the licensing process in Ontario but this video just simplified it all for me. • @SmokinMonkeyOG

      Thanks man! Insurance is hard to talk about because it’s such a big difference in price for everyone. Insurance rate depends on your driving history, any tickets you have, how long you’ve had a license, your age, the area you live in (can be double the price in some areas like Brampton), and the size of engine you have on your machine, and a few other things as well. So very hard to say what insurance will be. Mine is $80 but I have friends that pay $300-$400 per month.
      Winter is too cold to ride, your tires don’t grip the road and slide a lot and when snow falls it’s nearly impossible to ride. We store our motorcycles in Canada and don’t ride them from November till about April.

    Get your m1. Go take a motorcycle safety course and pass the test (dont have to wait the 60 days to take it this way but still have to wait the 60 days to upgrade to the m2) then get insurance once you can upgrade to the m2
    This is what I am planning on doing this summer. I'll have my m2 and be able to get slightly cheaper insure. I'll have the safety course, I'll be 25, and I'll have the m2 so my insurance should he decent and not crippling

    • @SmokinMonkeyOG
      @SmokinMonkeyOG  2 года назад

      Thanks! To be honest I can make a video but it won’t be very helpful because you can’t negotiate the price with insurance companies in Canada. You only get a lower price the longer you have your licence, the older you are, the classification of you licence (m1, m2, m), and if you have any tickets or accidents. I think we have the highest price insurance in the world in Canada so it’s a pain in the ass.

Nice to have the course for additional safety, but all courses are full during all summer within 300km around me. Not sure if I accept the quote and go ahead and buy a bike and book for m2 test ?

    • @SmokinMonkeyOG
      @SmokinMonkeyOG  3 месяца назад

      Well, of course you have to think about it. Would anybody insure a driver in a car with a G1? it’s the exact same thing lol. As for taking the course, I would definitely wait to take the course; if you go to take the test by yourself they’re gonna tell you ‘ride from here to there’s and they don’t tell you that they’re looking for you to shift from first gear to second gear back to neutral and then put your foot down and stop safely. They just tell you ‘ride from here to there’. So you can end up taking the test with the ministry and failing for stupid reasons and having to do it all over again.

    Man when you started talking a little about insurance, it felt like I had been kicked in the guts.
    I'm soon to be 52 and never got a driver's license ( never really had the cash for a car ) and not knowing if I would like or be able to handle a motorcycle I decided to get what you see as my profile pic, it's an Ebike lol ( based on the Ninja 300, and yes I'm 52 and still a BIG Resident Evil fan so got some decals of the Umbrella Corporation and went a bit nutz lol ). but since it does not require a license or insurance to operate over here, I thought it would be a good way to start, just after a few weeks I regretted so much buying this crap and not going for a real one ( I say crap because of low travel range and high price for what it is ) but now if I save for a couple of years I might be able to get a real bike, but I'm not sure I would be able to afford the insurance ( I did a few quick checks and it looks like I could be in the $3k+/year and that is way out of my budget ) considering our winters ( I'm in Ottawa ) it's stupid crazy the $$$ they want for a vehicle that ends-up parked for almost 1/2 the year.
    Great vid and super informative, and to help a fellow Canadian = +1 Sub.
    Thanks and ride safe!

      Try getting quotes on different bikes. I was quoted 5k a year for a CBR60RR and 1800 a year for my SV650 I currently ride lol it’s nuts how much of a difference there is. Every year you have a bike insured and have a license the rates lower. I think I pay $83 a month now on the SV after owning it for 4 years. Crazy but that’s why I don’t have a super sport like a ninja600, R6, gsxr600 or CBR600RR but bikes like the ninja650, cbr650f and gsxr650f are all less than half of their super sport counterparts.

      @SmokinMonkeyOG thank you for the reply, I recall you saying similar in the video but from what I can tell the M2 isn't gotten through my local course - I would do the course and then have some period of time not operating a motorcycle then have to do the test.
      Do you not need insurance to do the course?

    • @SmokinMonkeyOG
      @SmokinMonkeyOG  4 месяца назад +2

      @peanutbutter7721 the courses for people with an M1 that want to get an M2 you do the two day course and at the end of it they give you a package that you take to the ministry and they upgrade you to an M2 if you pass the test at the end of the course. I think you have to wait 30 days from getting your M1 till you can hand in the package to get your M2 but that’s the only waiting in Ontario
