  • To be clear, this is not the whole 'Learning Curves' motorcycle course that trains riders to pass the M2 Test in Ontario, Canada. This is only the test which gets them their M2 license. The course is much more involved than this, but these are the skills needed for the test.

Ok, I have been teaching this exam and course for seven years in Ontario.
Pass rate is massively high. Course is more intense that this evaluation. Looks like exam that is practiced at RTI and Curves schools.
    Times for section:
7.5sec box to end of narrow.
    8.3sec box to box.
    1.6sec mark 1 to mark 3 (of 4).
    1.3sec on swerve, ..
    1.3brake, ..
    1.3trail brake. Marks on pavement.
MTO ministry offers more simple test. Their examinators, unlike instructors at school, are not coaching or teaching.

Corrections: This test is the one that follows the course you take before your M2 Test. If you just take the test without the course, I believe that you use your own bike and that the test is different (riding the bike in a slalom is one of the exercises). In addition, I stated that you can get up to 12 points off during the test. In fact you can get 11 points off. On the 12th point you fail the test.

Great video and very informative. The following is a little off topic but relevant.
Try to follow the complete lack of logic of the MTO, you do a written test and get a 90 day permit to get out on the roads and then you do this test of the most basic skills of controlling a bike. So for 90 days they have no idea if you've ever even sat on a bike but you can go out into traffic. This test should be done immediately after the written tests or you receive nothing. All these skills can be practiced in a parking lot no permit required; it's absolutely asinine to test these most basic skills after letting people loose on the roads. I mean, if you didn't possess these skills during your M1 period, you would have been in multiple accidents in no time. It's like letting you sky dive for a while and then testing you to see if you know how to open a chute.

    • @DifferentSpokesTV
      @DifferentSpokesTV  4 года назад +3

ymlas02 Good point. When I took the test in 1998 I had never even sat on a motorcycle. Then I took the test in the fall, and the next time I actually rode a bike was the spring when I picked up my new Suzuki Intruder 1400! I totally wasn’t ready for the road or for a 1360cc bike. That’s why I made sure that my wife had some lessons in the parking lot before the test and an industrial area and on rural roads after getting her M2 before we did any real riding. Thanks for the comment.

    Atta girl Brooke!
I was taught to ride by an OPP motorcycle officer and he taught us to put our feet on the pegs AS soon as we started to move and not put them down again until we were just stopped. The problem with running along with your feet down is that if you catch your foot on a rock or a pothole, it will break your ankle.

When I did the M1-M2 course most people enrolled had ridden a bike at some point in the past in fact I think the average age of folks doing the course was over 40!

    Questions
On the course does one get a chance to practice all of the exercises first before one is tested on them.?
On the point system say on the first exercise if one is to slow as over the 7.5 seconds one loses one point and also one point every time one goes out of bounds. If that person went out of bounds twice and too slow then it would cost them 3 point just in that one first exercise?
So if one has 11 points against them they will pass while 12 is a failure.
Also dropping the bike at any time is an automatic failure?

Thank You for that. I just scheduled my M2 Test today for next week. I am a 55 yo male...bought my 1st dirt bike (with my own money from working) at 12 in 1976 when it was legal to ride on the backroads in the Niagara Peninsula. Got my G licence at 16 and my M licence at 18. No nerves...easily passed both 1st time. Have over 1,000.000 kms in 4X4 trucks and SUV in 39 years and over 200.00kms on street bikes in the 37 years. 4 years ago I went to MTO to renew licence but they CLAIMED I owed $740 and wouldn't renew. I am on permanent disability, had no car or bike and an income of $1000 per month. $740 out of pocket was out of the question. Last year my father passed and left me $3400 (It's OK) I bought a 2002 BMW F650GS Dakar for $3 grand+$400 Tax (Gonna ride it RTW wink-wink..body has expiry date) Went to renew my licence and found out the $740 disappeared but my licence was suspended for letting it lapse for more than 3 years (rule came in 1995...15 years AFTER I passed my licence and the year of the birth of my 3rd son and when i started the 1st of 2 companies). Now my disability caused my poverty...my poverty prevented me from renewing my licence. The MTO discriminated against me now by retesting BOTH G and M licence from scratch. (No mandatory waiting time) but I have not only MTO exam costs but 50% insurers won't insure a bike (Mandatory for test) and the one that did wanted $2300 on the table because their computer said I was a NEW M1 rider. Under no fault...insurance companies must insure cars but not motorcycles. CATCH 22...I need a legal bike to get M2 and M license. No one rents bikes...Borrow a bike is like asking to BORROW your wife...as ot has always been. MTO don't ride so don't understand that. I got insurance through Co-operators much much cheaper but the only did that because I ride an Adventure Bike (no sport bikes or cruisers). I was sick to my stomach writing beginners and again now (Just read your comment below and see this isn't the M2 test). I suffer severe depression...3 heart attacks and a triple bypass and diagnosed with chronic lung disease last year..Should have bought an E-Bike...no licence...no insurance...don't even have to carry ID so just give a false name when I KILL someone and get caught for impaired...ride tomorrow. Naaaaa. It is Great riding again. How I have missed it..66 mpg and I can't stay out of the saddle. If I fail next Wednesday...I will have to leave my bike there because I won't be able to walk it home (Lung condition and no G licence to rent a truck) Free Bike anyone...available at Privately Owned Monopolized Test Centre in Ontario!!!

Is she riding a CB300f? I'm looking at one of those as my first street bike. I've had enduros and dirt bikes before so I'm confident with the clutch and shifting the only thing I worry about is the weight of the bike. I'm only 5'5 and the YZ125 I had was a 38 inch seat height which was difficult to stand on when at a stop. Thankfully the bike I am hopefully buying (if no one else gets it first) has a lowered linkage in it because the previous driver was short as well. But its a lot heavier than a dirt bike.

You can set up a driving test for your M2 and do the M2 test on your own bike. The test is different than the one in the video though.

During an emergency stop (from any gear), clutch in (and held in until stopped), throttle off, progressive front & rear brake applied, AND tap, tap, tap down into first (aka passive downshifting). This will allow you to stop, not stall, and be ready to go in first gear as soon as you are stopped.

Yonghwan Seok Thanks! M and M2 designations are the licence levels in Ontario, Canada. An M1 is a written test, the M2 is a probationary licence, and an M is the full motorcycle licence.

With the M2 you're still restricted to blood alcohol level of zero. The full M will allow some alcohol in your system, but I'm not sure how much, and definitely recommend zero alcohol anyway. Safe riding all...

The M2 will expire after 5 years and you'll have to start from scratch (M1) again. You must get your M before the 5 year expiry and then you'll have M for life (must renew every 5 years, without testing)

I didn’t specifically measure the course, but if you know in which parking lot in your area the course is run, you can go there and practice. The markings are usually permanent, or at least they are where we live. See if you can google where the course is. Often they’re held in the parking lot of a college.

Here in Spain it's a litle bit harder than there, we have to describe the outline of the leaves of a clover painted on the pavement, when we leave the clover without stopping we circulate about five meters on a curb of a width of approximately fifteen centimeters, then we enter a 90 degrees curve and at the end there are two horizontal sticks about thirty centimeters apart and we have to stop hitting the first one only without hitting the second one. all this in a one meter wide lane approximately delineated by lines and cones and with a limited time. Also we have to use ap to second gear at the end before break down. We have not points any fail is not allowed

Dion Koehler The course does teach downshifting but the actual test requires just the minimum skills to get on the road. The M level test that gets you your final licence includes downshifting but you have to ride on the road for at least a year and a half to take that.

If you take the course they will provide the bikes and you can’t bring your own bike. Just look up ‘Learning Curves’ motorcycle safety courses or an equivalent in your area. The only way you have to bring in your own bike is if you take the test without the course. I don’t recommend this. One, taking the course lowers your insurance and makes you a better rider, and two, the test is different if you take it without the course.

Dr. Michael R. Foreman if you take the course, you have to do it on one of their bikes because of insurance reasons. Your bike does not fall under the school’s insurance policy. No, my inquiry was/is: When it comes to taking the exit road test, do they, or will they supply a bike for the exit road test. I bought an 1100cc Yamaha Virago and would rather use a smaller bike. That was the point of my inquiry. Thanks again for your responses.

Ah yes, thank you for clarifying. In your case you would just go to your local test centre and take the test on your own bike. However, this kind of test is not the same as the one I outlined in the video. As far as I know this one involves riding your bike around some cones at slow speed and performing various maneuvers. There are videos on RUclips of people doing these tests on their own motorcycles. Unfortunately I don't know much about this as both my wife and I took the course and passed the test outlined in the video above. Congrats on the bike and good luck on your test.

The Ontario graduated Motorcycle system is broken. Most riders I spoke to write the M1 and do not ride until they can book an M2. Then, you cannot find an M2 test anywhere in eastern Ontario for months. Our preferred location is Cornwall but there is nothing up to Ottawa and even west of Kingston. Insurance on a 1982 XL500 is $650/month for an M1.

  • @bikedude5911
    @bikedude5911 6 месяцев назад +1

First off, you have the numbering for the test all wrong. Ex 1 is the sharp turn, Ex 2 is the distance to the end of the narrow neon (still int he same direction. Once turned around and from tire in the box, Ex 3 is the timing from start to end and Ex 4 is stopping in the box without skidding. Ex 3 (you named it Ex 3) is the Judgement speed selection. Ex 6-8 have the same parameters in that if you are too slow but successful, you get a second chance. If you are too fast or slow and unsussessful, that's it and you loose whatever points you loose. Now for , you DO NOT have to shift into second gear. It's all about timing. It's also not harder on bigger bikes. When I teach M2X (full M licensing we use the MOST test to evaluate rider skill. As instructors we use out own MC, so we do the MOST test with Electra Glides, ZX14, Multistrada's. Her stop wasn't perfect as she put her right foot down (not markable but not perfect). What caused this is she was still leaned over when applying front brake which caused the MC to lean in that direction. In accordance with CSC manuals, it's supposed to be done going right to left - turning to the left (not as you showed). it's done on a signal from an instructor. The rider accelerates and then (when the signal is given) stops as quickly as they can. This way they aren't losing down on the ground but up in front of them like they would in traffic. - is again done on a signal from an instructor. Last is - again like Ex 6, student accelerates enters the curve and (on the signal from an instructor) the student stops as quickly as they can. For all exercise you loose points if you ride on or over the lines that define the exercises.
