I actually had a fairly similar idea for a Kirby movie like this, but it would start with Adeleine’s backstory, and it would serve mostly as an explanation of what Dark Matter is so we wouldn’t need the typical endgame monologue. Basically, Adeleine’s planet was taken over by Dark Matter, where it’s established that it targets people with darkness in their hearts, and that it seems to be looking for something. When it doesn’t find what it’s looking for, it essentially discards whatever planet it was on, not taking care to destroy it, but not exactly leaving happy memories of its brief conquest. Adeleine, though, she was spiteful, and essentially hitched a ride on the Dark Matter that possessed her, trying to take it down as revenge, and when it got back to its cloud, its master thought it would be easier to just launch the two off to who-cares-where, that ending up being Popstar.
From there, it would be a focus on the story of how Adeleine meets Kirby, someone who’s origin I’d like to leave entirely ambiguous rather than go with the anime’s interpretation, but definitely hasn’t been here long, and before long the two are brought into meeting with King Dedede since he’s distrustful of outsiders disrupting his lazy, peaceful rule. From there, they meet Waddle Dee as essentially their babysitters as Dedede thinks about what to do with them, and catch the attention of Meta Knight, all while we get hints of the Dark Matter working in the background, at first trying to get revenge on Adeleine, but quickly discovering Dedede’s wealth of knowledge that he has in some basement he forgot about, and discovering that the thing that Dark Matter was looking for was on this random backwater planet all along, and it tries to get the attention of its master so it can alert them to its presence.
The movie’s focus would be on the characters rather than working to solve a plot, with Kirby’s influence working its magic on the spiteful Adeleine, the selfish Dedede, the reclusive Meta Knight, and the lonely Waddle Dee, which would slowly diminish the ‘darkness’ in their hearts. That way, when Dark Matter’s master, probably Zero, eventually did come to Popstar to take whatever magical artifact, maybe the Star Rod, star that summons Nova, Dimension Mirror, whatever, the only one of them that could be possessed would be King Dedede, with the others being completely immune to Dark Matter’s effects.
I’d personally use this as an excuse for sequel bait, with Dedede just being TEASED at opening up rather than being considered truly a friend, since he can still be possessed, and playing a largely antagonistic role up until the end where he‘s just overshadowed rather than ‘switching sides’ just yet. Like, a scene at the end where he’s playing it off as if he doesn’t care, but does things like admit that Kirby and Adeleine are free to stay as hey please rather than as prisoners, and reward Waddle Dee with the iconic bandana for his efforts against the Dark Matter. The movie could also potentially have the lone Dark Matter having its own heart slowly changed by Kirby, so that we could eventually get that Dark Matter Blade redemption arc that the external media tried to hint at, where the DL2 Dark Matter was just said to have come to Popstar because it wanted friends and didn’t know how to reach out, followed by its master coming for conquest.

This isn’t a bad idea, I actually like it. However, prior to watching this I came up with an idea for a visual Kirby adaptation. I feel like Kirby is too much to be contained in one movie (I don’t think there would be any sequels [because critics suck]), so I would like a modern Kirby anime. This would be a strict adaptation of the games, all of the mainline ones (the regular ones, so no Mass Attack, Canvas Curse, or Rainbow Curse), except for og Dreamland and Adventure. As much is the og Kirby anime did its own thing, I feel like it basically adapted those first two games. Kirby wouldn’t talk, but would be characterized throughout the series. It would be two arcs per season, meaning two games per season. The first season would be Super Star and Dreamland 2, in that order. Although Dreamland 2 released before Super Star, I want the latter to be first because it is more well known. Super Star would just be adapting Milky Way wishes, but if they wanted to add Dyna Blade or Meta Knight’s Revenge it would be fine. Who knows, maybe we can get a spin-off of Meta Knightmare. The other games would be easy, 2 would be Dreamland 3 and Crystal Shards. 3 would be Amazing Mirror and Squeak Squad. 4 would have the entirety be Return to Dreamland. 5 would be Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot, and 4 and 5 would be Star Allies and Forgotten Land. It’s a little ambitious, but if it works, it will be spectacular.

I’ve watched the Kirby Right Back at Ya anime 3 times so a modern Kirby anime would be right up my ally. Regardless I can imagine this as a pretty good adaption due to the game’s stories being pretty solid.
But more importantly, that’s at least *seven* banger opening themes and even more if they make a new op for each arc. And the amount of spin offs you could make?! Original movies for the anime!? The excitement of knowing a new Kirby game can mean a new season/arc?!?

I think the idea could work, Kirby is one of my favorite characters of all time, but if Kirby is the main character, he would have to be an active protagonist. Kirby has have a goal that gets accomplished by the end of the movie. He has to make a mistake that flips his story from constant winning to constant failure.
For some context, feature length narratives are split into five basic plot points. Plot Point 1 is the call to adventure, where the hero will put off answering until they have no choice, leading to PP2 Leaving. From there we have Act 2, which consists of the hero having fun, making deep bonds with the other characters, generally winning, before PP3 happens. The midpoint is usually something that the hero chooses to do that bites him in the butt. Which sets him on a downward trajectory, until PP4, where the hero is at their lowest point (i.e. the villain will win). From there the hero has to rise above the odds, take down the evil, and get what their goal had started out as. The resolution, PP5.
So with what you laid out, is great. The main problem comes from the character of Kirby in general. Kirby is the hero, yes, but Kirby is never the protagonist. Kirby defeats evil, but Kirby does not push his story forwards.
So, in the beginning of the movie, we need to establish a goal for Kirby that has him actively pushing the story forwards. Maybe we see dark matter destroying a previous planet Kirby was on, and he is forced to flee against his will, being chased after by Dark Matter, and he is eventually shot down onto Planet Popstar. Kirby now has a story of, not exactly revenge, but to avenge his previous home and stop Dark Matter from doing it again. We meet the side characters who help him on his journey. He possibly waves off the concerns of Dark Matter coming to Popstar, more interested in seeing the planet and eating their food, until we get the first battle of Popstar, where Kirby loses to Dark Matter, and Meta Knight saves him, only keeping Dark Matter at bay for now.
From there, Kirby and friends go on their adventure to get the Star Rod, defeating minor enemies, winning, bonding, we set up the backstories of Bandana Dee and Adeleine, even possibly delving into some of Dedede and Meta Knight's backstories. Until they eventually get the Star Rod. But at that moment, Dark Matter possesses Dedede, and Kirby has to make the choice between saving his new friend or the Star Rod. He will, of course, choose to save Dedede, but Dark Matter keeps his possession of Dedede and the Star Rod
From there, the gang has to defeat their friend, and chase Dark Matter while he wrecks havoc on Dreamland. The heroes might be winning some battles, but they are losing the war. Until Dark Matter has captured all of Kirby's friends, and Kirby is lost without his friends. This is Kirby at his lowest, overwhelmed by Dark Matter and the capture of his friends. But it's the thought of his friends and new place to call home that has him giving one last stand. This is when Dark Matter will reveal himself as the swordsman, and Kirby uses the copy abilities he's learned to free his friends for one final battle against the Swordsman. Meta Knight will lead the charge while Kirby and Adeleine retrieve the Star Rod, Bandana Dee and Dedede fending off the Dark Matter controlled enemies. And being surrounded by his friends, and finding a home, Kirby will defeat the Swordsman, who will either flee or announce that bigger enemies are coming.
Kirby and friends happily help rebuild Dreamland, revealing a new home for Kirby.
End Credit Scene could easily be Gooey, or, I think, a really cool and cinematic shot of the titular orange and yellow butterfly landing on the windowsill of Kirby's new house.
Probably more that what was needed, but I have a deep passion for screenwriting, and something about this idea just tickled my brain just right. Loved the video by the way.

I really like this, although I do think metaknight would be more interesting if he was singlehandedly strong enough to defeat dark matter, but when questioned at the end of the movie, he could say something like "because kirby needs to be stronger than me if he wants to defeat the source" or something
Also, I think it would be cool as well if dedede goes with more than one waddle dee, but selects one at random to go with Adeline, but bandee volunteers because of some pre-established reason

    I love your idea!
I think Kirby should take cues from Gromit (from Wallace and Gromit). Gromit is silent, but extremely expressive through body
language and facial expressions. (He's arguably the most expressive character stop motion.) Kirby could follow Gromit's example,
communicating his thoughts and feelings to those around him and the audience through how he acts and looks. He would still
"speak" like in the games, but as far as the characters (and the audience) are concerned, it's an alien language they cannot
understand, and may as well be comic babble.
(I mean aliens should not speak the same language as us, it would be nice for that
fact to accounted for once in a kid's movie.)

A little tweak I have is that maybe while Kirby is causing “mischief” it’s all actually him being chased by dark matter, causing chaos throughout the town. Once they reach the town square though, adelein and waddle dee will finally see what’s really happening and dark matter corners Kirby, about to attack. Meta knight comes in to fight against it first, but when he starts to be overwhelmed, Kirby reveals his copy powers and starts to fight too. However, they wouldn’t be able to stand a chance still without the star rod. Dark matter begins to corrupt and take hold of the town/kingdom and the group begins to retreat. Meta knight then explains who this is and what they need to stop dark matter. Meta knight, also being a star warrior, explains to the group who Kirby is as well.
Also another thing I thought of as I was writing this: what if instead of going outside of the kingdom to get the star rod or going on a sort of quest, everything takes place in a corrupted “post-apocalyptic” version of dreamland , so that they are constantly under the watch of dark matter along the way. It’d also make for a really good potential heist scene I think lol

This sounds like a really interesting idea for the story. I actually thought of a way you could expand on the characters.
Bandana Waddle Dee-At the start of the film he comes off as an overly excited boot kisser for Dedese. He happily follows any order the king gives him and just comes off as a yes man. During the segment where he is watching Kirby with Adoline, kirby gets into some kind of mischief in the town that ends with Bandee & Ado losing sight of him, during this chaos Bandee loses his bandana and lacks it during the search for Kirby. He asks around the town, but all of the residents are just surprised there is another Waddle Dee besides Bandana Dee thar xan speak. This clearly hurts Bandee on an emotional level, and he quickly puts the bandna back on once he finds it again.
Later, when the gang is moving through the one of the areas on their journey Ado comments that Bandee seems to know his way around the area really well. Bandana Dee then reveals the area is actually the waddle dee's ancestorial home. He them tells the story of how fhe waddle dees met King Dedede. The dees were being menaced by a band of thieves known as the Squeaks. Dedede and Meta Knight defended the dees and drove the Squeaks out of the area. The king to be realized the dees wouldn't be safe in the land anymore, and took them back to the town. The dees are devoted to Dedede despite his laziness, because they know he is a good person and view themselves as in debted to them.
In the battle with the boss of that area, Badana Dee puts himself in senseless danger and nearly dies during the fight. Kirby saves him, and Ado gives him an earful on how reckless he was being. Bandanda dee then he explains why he is the way he is. He looked up to Dedede and Meta Knight more then any of the other Dees. He wanted to be just like them and worked hard to achieve this goal. He mastered the spear in a way his peers never dreamed of and learned how to speak. Despite this, nobody seemed to truly see him as an individual. He was jusr another waddle dee. So he began wearing his Bandana. He feels insecure that his individualality lies in his bandana alone, and wants this journey to be the thing that makes everyone remember him beyond being a waddle Dee with a bandana.
Adoline- When the dark matter first arerive she freezes up and has a ptsd induced flashback of when they invaded her world. Dedede snaps her our of this as carries her to safery with the others. He briefly questions her on what that was all about, but this subject is quickly dropped when Meta Knight starts dropping exposition.
When Kracko arracks while the gang are xlimbing fhe mountain, Ado has another flashback. When the fight ends, Bandee begins grilling her on why she freezes up. Ado goes on ro explain her backstory with the dark matters.
Dedede - The two of them were the old heros of Dreamland. They were known all across the land for facing any challenge that threatened them or the innocent people of Dreamland. Eventually Dedede chose to become a king due to believing he could do more good as a king then as a warrior. This strained his relationship with Meta Knight.
Unfortunately, Dedede realized being a king is more than just protecting his people. It invovles a lot of boring politics. He began longing for the days where things were as simple as fighting the bad guy and keeping his people safe. So Dedede jumps at the opportunity to fight a threat, even if that threat is a pink puff ball with the mind of a child.
When he fights alongside Meta Knight to defend Dreamland from the dark matter, the two engage in friendly banter that quickly turns an argument about whehteir or not Dedede has lost his way while they continue to cut down the dark matters. Right before getting possessed, Dedede comes to the conclusion that being able to provide for his people and solve their problems is just as valuable as a king that fights fo defend his people.
Feel free to share any feedback or criticism.

I quite like this idea! My only reservation about it is the none-too-subtle references to Kirby: Right Back at Ya! It’s a somewhat obscure bit of Kirby media here in the west, as it wasn’t a big hit in the 2000s, and the current generation growing up with Kirby weren’t there to watch its initial run. The fans who do recognize the cues from it will immediately expect to see Tiff and Tuff, Nightmare Enterprises, the Star Warriors, etc., only for the movie to completely move away from that inspiration. I do like Kirby arriving unexpectedly, but I personally would avoid using the spaceship and Cappy Town. I would instead replace them with something functionally similar, like Waddle Dee Town. Just my two cents.

I think Kirby should speak, but only minimalistically. We know he can speak in the games, since characters can react as if Kirby said something, particularly Elfilin at the start of Forgotten Land, repeating the unheard introduction of Kirby's name. Kirby is friendly but impulsive, not a baby with zero agency of his own like in the anime.
Speaking of, I think Anime Dedede's characterization should be left to rot. A movie accurate to the games should emphasize Dedede's game characterization. Yes he can be lazy and stubborn, but he also cares about his subjects and when crisis hits, he has always taken the initiative. His dynamic with Kirby should be like older and younger siblings with a touch of rivalry, though Dedede can be reluctant to admit how much he cares about the puffball. His voice should be gruff and stoic, not goofy.
I think it'd be funny if Meta Knight was the comic relief. Yes he's a powerful fighter, but a lot of his mannerisms are just part of his mysterious aesthetic ™. He's a theater kid with a love of sweets, and while he thinks himself the most sane of the core cast, he's also the most competitive and trigger happy.

This was a pretty good pitch! Could definitely see something like this happening down the line if a Kirby movie ever gets made!
I’ve posted my personal pitch for a Kirby Movie around, but never on RUclips. It’s nothing super in depth, just a general overview of what the movie would be, but I’m still proud of the idea
“A Kirby Movie that combines Dreamlands 1 and 2 together could work
I’m thinking the general structure of Dreamland 1 with Dedede stealing the food, Dreamland 2’s Dark Matter for the twist. Maybe even have it tie into the Star Allies thing of Kirby and DM/Void being two sides of the same coin.
Topped off with appearances from BanDee in a similar role to his appearance in Revenge of the King, and Meta Knight in a role similar to his place in Adventure. Maybe throw the animal friends in for flavor?
Oh yeah also idk anything about celebrities so idk who would be good to inevitably cast, but I’d have Danny Devito as Dedede just as god intended, and Chris Pratt as Whispy Woods because it’d be funny.”

Honestly, this would be one of the best ways to do a Kirby movie. It features the core 4 of Kirby, MK, Dedede, and Bandana Dee... and I also like that Adeleine is here. Because I agree for the exact reasons you state she'd work perfectly as one of Kirby's closest friends. And her vague backstory in the games leaves a lot of room to work with in expanding it.
The Dark Matter also work as overarching antagonists... due to possibly having some of the closest connections to Kirby himself of any antagonist. Though would love to slide in some others (like Marx).

There are so many ways to make a Kirby Movie, that only important rules can put it into focus
    1. Kirby shouldn't speak
    2. King Dedede, Meta Knight and Bandana Waddle Dee should be present
    3. Something with Dark Matter
    4. Hide the lore
    5. Eldritch being to defeat at the end
I always thought a Kirby's Return to Dreamland movie adaptation could be great, as you have a lot of dialogue with Magolor and different environments. The Final Fight would also be super cool (and wouldn't be a Movie version of CROWNED be just amazing?). The game itself had a storybook style and I think the Master Crown would be a big threat!

Gamesbite: "There are so many ways to make a Kirby Movie, that only important rules can put it into focus"
Also Gamesbite soon after saying that: "1. Kirby shouldn't speak"
Let's check WiKirby on this topic, shall we? Ah, here we go! _...though it is implied that - much like Mario and Link - Kirby is indeed capable of complex speech, though the player is not privy to what Kirby says to other characters. All the player hears instead are Kirby's grunts, cheers, and inflections, peppered only with occasional words such as his signature elongated "Hi!"_
Seriously, when it comes to speech mannerisms, Kirby is more so like Wile E. Coyote if anything - they are capable of complex speech, they just don't do it often.

A Zelda movie is happening, and Wes Boll - a Zelda fan himself - is working with Shigeru Miyamoto to keep the movie faithful to the series (yes, even to the point of Link being a silent protagonist).
So yeah, a Kirby movie is definitely up for grabs now (though I still believe a new anime is long overdue), and I can just imagine what can be done with Kirby in terms of his speech mannerisms, because this is a movie we're discussing after all. It's implied that even though Kirby is a silent protagonist, he is indeed capable of complex speech, just like Mario & Link are. Meaning that while Kirby can indeed talk, he just saves it for the pause screens.
And that got me thinking - in some Looney Tunes episodes, mainly the ones with Wile E. Coyote, it's revealed that he can in fact talk, with the earliest instance of this being in 1952's _Operation: Rabbit._ However, like a certain video game character we're discussing that came long after that episode's release, Wile E. does not talk often. So why not take that approach with Kirby's speech mannerisms? Make him a character who, while not much of a talker, has a lot of intellect to share when he does. Reserved, but perceptive.
God, thinking about it, I actually just dropped a good idea. And I know from experience that Nintendo will listen to my good ideas. I willed Star Allies into existence, after all.

  • @joganesha4151

What makes a good video game movie TO ME is an adaptation of the game's spirit. A lot of people I know think that if the movie just followed the source material then it would've been better, but if so then what's the point of watching the movie if you could instead just... Play the game.
The mario movie is uses this principle pretty well. Yea the story is mid, but so is every other mainline mario game that's not a spinoff or and rpg. In retrospect the mario games are very formulaic; Someone is in trouble/kidnapped(usually because of bowser), Mario takes the job, finds a buddy along the way, bing bang boom so long gay bowser and Mario saves the day. However the strongest aspect of mainline mario games are their worlds and setting. Twas never about the story, it's always about jumping and doing flips around the wonderful levels crafted in each world. The movie does that plus adding more. It's like cake, it's not nutritious and it's not trying to be, cake is sweet and fancy and that is all it needs to be.
Kirby might work with an adaotation, as long as it carries the spirit of Kirby. We love to watch our little god killer/eater beat the snot out of eldritch beings with the help of the friends he made along the way, albeit using a giant sword, giant SUCC, or my favorite, *optimus prime*

It’s an interesting concept but I feel like it could stray away too much from the main game storyline especially if it’s trying to adapt it spot on. I know movie adaptations aren’t 1 to 1 with their game counterparts but like you wouldn’t really see Kirby using the Star Rod to beat Dark Matter as it’s intended purpose is to stop bad dreams and power the Fountain of Dreams not beat beings meant to spread darkness and despair. Would also feel like Nightmare would have to play a more prominent role at first then transition into a Dark Matter storyline especially since if the first Dark Matter movie bombs, be real here they probably aren’t going to have a movie based on Zero or going to Void territory, though that could conflict with your Dedede idea since it sounds like a great turning point for the character. Lastly, Idk why I was never really a big fan of the Star Warriors concept to begin with. It makes sense for the original anime but with the new current storyline, the Star Warriors really doesn’t make too much sense to bring back in the grand scheme of things as Kirby is implied to just be a positive incarnation of Void, Meta Knight probably being a Kirby who’s matured, and characters like Galacta Knight and the other 3 heroes from Star Allies just being powerful warriors of their time.
Idk I’m not storyline adapter but I’d love to get into that especially if it were for Nintendo movies so probably everything I said could work but I just don’t see it right now personally.

I personally would love to see some inspiration from Superstar Ultra, as that is one of the more story based games in the series, and probably one most kirby fans have played. One small nitpick I have is Adeline isn't as well known as most other characters, so I don't think writers realistically would want to make her a main character in the movie (although that would be really cool). One small tweak I thought of would be to add Marx to the group, however that changes the plot ENTIRELY for obvious reasons. I think it would be really cool if this followed the story beats you mentioned, except before fighting dark matter, Marx betrays Kirby and initiates their showdown. That might defocus the plot though so idk how well that would work out

I'd prefer a Kirby movie to keep the villain (or at least their true nature) more mysterious until near the end. The endings of most Kirby games are extremely memorable because they surprise you with something you didn't expect, whether it's an innocent looking character revealing their true twisted intentions, the reveal of some menacing entity that was manipulating things behind the scenes, or even just the villain being more of a threat than they first appeared.
In the context of this movie concept, you could have a fake out where seemingly all of the Dark Matter is destroyed and the heroes think they've won, until it's revealed that one of the characters (maybe Adeleine or a minor villager character) got possessed earlier by the true mastermind of the Dark Matter invasion (which in this case could be Dark Matter Swordsman or Zero.) Dark Matter Swordsman or Zero would then use the false sense of security to their advantage and destroy the Star Rod, thus removing the biggest obstacle to them before unleashing their true power on Kirby and his friends. You could even have them give a creepy monologue while in the possessed person's body, possibly even mutating them in a somewhat grotesque fashion (but not enough to raise the age rating of course). A finale like this would not only surprise the audience with its more creepy nature compared to the rest of the film, but it would also surprise them by showing Dark Matter as far more intelligent and cunning than it initially seemed.
I think something with the general direction of what I'm describing would make for a finale more in the spirit of the games.
