I've always appreciated the fact that Smash Bros.'s actual story is that it's just a kid smashing action figures together to make them fight. That truly is the best justification you can have for that kind of game.
I think a smash bros film could potentially work like that, where the point of the movie is mainly just cool character interactions and sick fights without much need for setup. I understand and hard agree with Schaff's argument about how there shouldn't be an NCU, but I feel like he missed the point that you really don't need one for a Smash Bros movie, nor do you need that much setup for it. I think most people would accept it taking place in some non-canon inbetween world like in Subspace without worrying too much about it. Not saying such a film such necessarily be made - the other problems the list are still completely valid, but I don't think the film hinging on an ncu is one of them.
I think the premise of Smash Bros with the characters being toys is far more appealing than people give it credit for. It opens the door for ANYONE, being the kid who puts these toys together. Not just Sakarai or Andy from Toy Story, but ANYONE can be Master and Crazy Hand.

Wario could be introduced in a mario movie sequel as a villain, gets his standalone movie where he's an adventurer/treasure hunter, like the actual transition from Mario Land 2 to Wario Land 1. Kirby can work, if the first part of the film is insanely kid friendly, then the second part scalates to an action packed adventure and the third act is pure Lovecraftian horror.

Honestly, my first thought after finishing the Mario movie was “I hope they do a Luigi’s Mansion movie”. It wasn’t “I hope they do a Smash Bros movie”. Mario is big enough as is and you can make so much from this one franchise

@@victorford5047 IDEALLY every character has a pivotal role, is 100% lore accurate and they come up with a reason for all of them to exist in the same universe without breaking any continuity, its heartfelt, exciting and action packed and the villain is Master Hand but with a cool personality/motivation or somethin like that. “Why can’t a movie be a movie anymore?” You have no idea how much I felt that. I love the MCU but the impact it did made people think that every movie needs to be connected and have a big pay off in the end with a crossover film, we can’t have solo movies or stories anymore, it’s honestly really sad and unfortunate. Another point that you didn’t mention is that having a smash bros movie would be a mess because of how many characters there are, Ultimate had like 80+ characters, it would be a nightmare for writers to handle that much
Another issue is that there are now so many characters in Smash. If you have too many characters in a movie, then you will have people complaining that their favorites didn’t get a lot of screen time or character development, and it will be hard to give each character a decent amount of screen time. Plus, if they only decide to include certain characters to reduce the cast size and make it easier to create a better film storywise, then people will be complaining that their favorite characters are being excluded. Either way, it’s a lose-lose situation.

To be fair, Smash 64 only started with a roster of 12 fighters. A Smash movie would just start off with like...6 fighters. Similar to how the 1st Avengers was just Iron Man, Cap, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, and Black Widow.

However, they would have to pick which characters would make it into the film, and if they don’t pick certain characters that some of the fans love to play as, then again, some people will end up being a little disappointed. If they made a TV show, though, then they could probably get away with adding more characters. That said, I think that Smash would benefit more from a TV show adaptation than it would a film adaptation.
It's simple: People don't want movies for the interesting plots, messages or style; people just want to see the products they recognize from their childhood in another medium just because. Now, imagine a buch of products sharing screentime toguether, that's a money printer if I ever saw one.
People gets exited when they see their favorite character on the big screen, but then people starts criticize the product for the story and plot and what the characters do in the movie/show

The Mario universe is pretty much as expansive as the MCU. Making a Smash Bros movie would be more similar to shoving Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Spongebob, LOTR, Mickey Mouse, Forest Gump, and Despicable Me into a movie together than just making a "new MCU".

A Splatoon Anime would be fun as I could see it being a Spy/Sports Anime where an Inkling has to balance life between their competitive Turf/Ranked sessions and stopping whatever Agents are dealing with.
Tbh I say splatoon is probably the most feasible Nintendo ip for illumination to make a movie out of. I mean splatoon looks cartoony sings pop songs (like in SING but in Inklish), and fricken Sheldon basically looks like a skinnier minion.

The idea of a Smash Bros movie is one of those things that sounds like the coolest shit ever when you’re a kid but progressively gets more flawed and impossible the more you actually think about it as an adult.
The tonal differences of these franchises would definitely make it more difficult. Imagine Chrom Fire Emblem says something like “my older sister died” and then Kirby is just like “POYO”. Heck in Smash itself the characters don’t really say much
Well if I recalled Nintendo was going to start their own movie production company so the team ups will likely be ending here, they said they were going to learn the ins and outs of production from the making of Mario and do it themselves for the rest of their franchises.
A Zelda movie needs to be handled by people who can make good animation and a well-written plot inspired by the games, I don’t exactly know if Illumination is capable of doing this

That would be awesome! I was thinking more a film trilogy with the 3 games being slightly modified. I remember seeing some old clips where they did promotional media live action and had the proper acoustic versions of the songs and it looked so cool! I'm not sure if they'd go animated or live action with CGI effects, but I could see either working. I haven't seen Stranger Things, only clips and pics, but that kind of aesthetic would be really neat to see with EarthBound.
You forgot to mention how inconsistent the art style would have been. It would have been so jarring to see cartoony humans, semi-anime humans and pseudo-reslistic humans in the same movie/universe.

That would make an ssb movie even more jarring, for the fact that the supposed REAL characters with completely different art styles to be in the same place.
I feel like it’s important to note that Nintendo bought their own studio and plan on making their own movies WITHOUT Illumination, so I believe that Nintendo properties are more likely to be efficiently translated into film. I still agree with your point though that a Smash Bros. Movie would be too convoluted and incoherent. Movies are movies, not fanfics.

@@kshuffles Not really? I played all of the Splatoon story modes and it's about as "spine chilling" as any New Super Mario Bros game. That said, I still enjoyed it, but not everything needs to be subtly horrific.
Instead of adapting Smash Brothers to cinema, I think it would do much better as a TV show with a nonlinear narrative. That way, each episode can focus on a few different characters at a time instead of cramming a whole bunch of characters in an hour and a half long movie. It would be somewhat cluttered for sure, but nowhere near as extravagant as it'd be in cinema.
Me personally we could have like 10 episodes introducing the characters then have them go in an arena and have a 1v1 tournament and have their be a prize so they have the incentive to fight each other and have like 50 fights per episode and each episode be around an hour then have the later episodes have less fights so It will be over in like 75 episodes

I'd sort of be skeptical mainly because I know Cartoon Saloon for films not connected to massive IPs. Though Zelda does have all the aesthetics that fit Cartoon Saloon's brand, the worldbuilding and universe is way larger than The Secret of Kells, Song of the Seas and Wolfwalkers (which encorporate Irish folklore) or The Breadwinner (which is set in real life Taliban-ruled Afghanistan) combined. Then again, they did make a short for Star Wars: Visions which proves that they can at least work with a massive IP.

I was thinking of a comedic Smash show in the a la Carnival Phantasm. Of course it wouldn’t be canon and the characters would be toys like in Smash, but rather than fighting, they would go to various locations from their games (which are just setpieces now), crack jokes about their franchises, and have fun together. I’d like that!
I think a Smash Bros. movie could work, but NOT as a big MCU-styled crossover event. It'd be more like the Lego Movie and explore themes of childhood through the lens of a kid playing with toys, kinda like the games themselves.

Even before a video like this existed, I was never into the idea of a Smash Bros movie or a Nintendo cinematic universe. It would just be a nightmare to follow/create.
@Voltron77 The issue with this a Smash Bros movie/Nintendo Cinematic Universe is that you can only use like 6 Nintendo franchises. Mario, Zelda, Metriod, DK, Pokemon, and Kirby. The other Nintendo franchises don't have that mainstream popularity or universal appeal in order to benefit from a big theatrical movie plus most of them can't really transition into movies. Maybe Punch Out and Star Fox can, but those series aren't that popular. Series like Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Kid Icurus, Star Fox, F-Zero, Mother, Arms, Punch Out, Splatoon, etc only work as video games. Plus if you want 3rd party characters that's another issue.
Even if it did go into production I genuinely think it will take over 10 years to make since there is so many companies you have to get in contacts with and agree and make rules and crap for all sorts

I'm glad that Schaffrilla addressed people's obsession with everything having to have a cinematic universe. It was pretty cool when marvel did it, but now i'm just getting tired of it.
There's already a Smash movie that was made, called "There Will be Brawl" available on RUclips right now. They even got Ganondorf's voice actor to reprise his role, as well as to voice other characters. (Jokes aside, TWBB is pretty gritty and definitely a product of its time, but it's still worth a watch.)
It’s even more ironic when you know the guy who played Ganondorf is actually Matthew Mercer. AKA, the one and only number 1 player of Dungeons and Dragons thanks to his hit series Critical Role where’s he’s the top leader and does a lot of voice roles, like Chrom in Fire Emblem, Yusuke in Persona 5, and Jotaro from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. Seriously. Dude’s been INSANELY talented and he just keeps getting better and better.
I feel that dreamworks could handle a zelda movie very well. Because of what they did with the HTTYD movies , or even puss in boots the last wish, I would love to see a Zelda movie with either one of those art styles.

To be fair, Laika already did one of the best Zelda-like as Zelda-like you can get with Kubo. They even got a musical instrument with magical properties!
Also, I don't think Laika is going to accept this type of collaborations since as far as I know, it is first a passion project by some rich guy who adores stop motion iirc.
I feel like Zelda might also work better live action, though I wonder how they would get around Link being mute. Even in the recent games with voice acting, Link not talking is part of the universe.
I honestly think a 2d animated series or movie would work a lot stronger, especially with breath of the wild. Not only do I think it would do a lot of the visual elements of the series more justice - for example, I could not imagine if the Netflix Castlevania was live action instead. I also feel it could be used mor effectively to convey link not speaking.
From my admittedly limited experience with the Zelda franchise... Link talks... just not audibly for the players. If this is a recent change with Breath of The Wild then you can at least understand my confusion with these points that you and Schafrillas are bringing up. Legend of Zelda could probably be a pretty damn good movie/series. Link talking isn't really a big deal.

That’s sort of my query as well. Fighting game movies typically don’t have strong narratives unless you’re going to focus on individual characters and their connections to each other. But if they’re all from completely different franchises, that’s going to be rough and haphazard storytelling. Even using the premise of “some massive force pulled these beings into a random place for them to fight to victory,” it feels like the narrative will be peppered with pointless spectacle fights before everyone has to “team-up and defeat the big bad that brought them there.” Which, okay, but it’s not likely to create a compelling movie.
Schaffrillas talking about why he loves spinoffs has to be one of my favorite things ever. I relate to what he said so much. And as a random side note, if we're keeping with the trend of casting random big name celebrities as Mario characters, I remember someone saying Danny Devito and Willem Dafoe as Wario and Waluigi, and I kind of love that for some reason.

The Donkey Kong cinematic universe could be a thing, you can even add Wario since it shares universe with Mario, who shares it with Yoshi, who shares it DK, who shares it with Diddy Kong, who shares it with Banjo Kazooie, who shares it with Conker, etc.

I was thinking that Nintendo could just get different animation studios from both America and Japan to animate movie or show adaptations of their games. They once got the Demon Slayer animation studio to animate cutscenes for one of their games, so it wouldn’t be too far fetched.

Yeah that's the biggest difference. DC and Marvel all feature characters who's stories often revolve around each other. Some of the best comic stories are cross overs. Comparatively, part of the joy of SSB is the fact that all these characters DON'T fit together. It's fine to just want a Zelda movie
And we also shouldn't trust Illumination with any of the Mario RPG stuff either, basically anything focused more heavily on plot should be handed to a different studio.

I mean it was a kind of Batman origin story as well, but that was never like a “OOOOHH LOOOK! It’s BATMAN! It’s his STORY! Wow!” The focus was ON THE JOKER, which was great. They didn’t forget about Batman, or more specifically and accurately, Bruce Wayne, as the Wayne’s are significant to plot, and how tied Batman and Joker are together as characters, but that doesn’t take away the focus off of Joker or try to hype up the next film, it just sticks to itself, which is great!
What if it visually looked like a sci phi movie before CGI rolled around, like the original Star Wars Trilogy, or 2001: A space odyssey That would honestly be sick
Of all the potential cinematic universes that could be made, a smash brothers is one that has one of the best chances of working out if done well by a talented writer.
That last point’s mentality is actually one I’ve had with mariokart for a while. The mario universe is so massive and has so many great characters and locales to pull from, and I feel like when people ask for the guest characters to take up more of the series it just feels like people are missing the fact there’s already so much potential there

There's actually an old reason why they don't. Part of it was a sort of 'sterilization' of the franchise in the late 2000's, early 2010's. You notice after Super Paper Mario that the Paper Mario games started going down this idea of generic Toad designs? How the old designs of the enemies started to look closer to the designs from the New Super Mario Bros games? Nintendo wanted to sort of "scrub" this expanded Mario Universe idea out to make it all uniform. So if it's not from a main Mario game, it's not something they want to be a part of it.

As much as I love _Super Smash Bros._ I don't think a bunch of Nintendo characters bearing eachother up for 90 minutes. I can't imagine there being much of another plot. And these franchises just wouldn't mesh like the different Marvel characters do.
Yeah, an attempt at those bad Taisen Films from Toei's Tokustatu that Yonemura wrote would not work. Hey, if not in America, ask Toei Animation! They're working with Nintendo Pictures, so why not that when the time's right? I'd settle for Toei Smash, they have the talent in writing and animation!
A smash bros movie is a cute idea when you’re thinking about it in your head, but realistically is something that wouldn’t really make sense to do legitimately and especially legally with all the character rights.
The issue there is that the “just references” criticism would apply tenfold to a Smash movie and it would be way more blatant since it’s no longer just Mario, which barely ever had a story.

Also, with regards to Kirby in particular... eh, I personally think that a Kirby movie would be better off being handled by a Japanese animation studio, as the Kirby series is super popular in Japan, and while HAL have been making a greater effort to push the series overseas, particularly with Forgotten Land's success, I don't think it's gotten to the point where a bunch of people working at a western studio happen to be fans of the series yet. Really, as long as the film is treated with just as much care as The Super Mario Bros. Movie was given by Illumination and Nintendo, I'd be happy.

I never knew I wanted a Laika Zelda movie, but I absolutely want that now. Like, Laika might be the studio that could handle some of these properties the best, Zelda kind of with the tone of Missing Link, Metroid with Coraline vibes, and Kirby with Kubo vibes, though obviously not all Nintendo stuff would work under them.
As someone that has worked at Laika I can say translating Kirby character anatomy to stop motion would be the biggest nightmare. Metroid or LoZ would be beautiful in Laika style though. Unfortunately I really doubt they would go after such big established properties.
IF they make a Smash Bros. movie, it'd need a build up for most of the various characters and a reboot of the Sonic & Pikachu movies to bring them into artistic line before the script starts to take shape. But most of these characters can happily exist in their own worlds with minimal cross-over.
i was thinking, if the actual SSB lore is that they're all just toys in a kid's bedroom, then they should adapt that idea, like Zathura or Jumanji, instead of this whole "already living in our world" idea that everyone is thinking about.
That's kinda what I was imagining for the possible (eventual?) Smash Bros movie. Don't try to tie in everything into one universe, but rather keep them all separated so each series can have a chance to be fleshed out on the big screen, with no contamination in-between. Then, once each franchise has at least one or two movies to establish what's going on in that universe, have a extra-universal threat start making its presence known. Basically, make the movies stand alone, but the Smash Movie MULTI-versal, where the universes collide. The only down side ti that would be the Smash Bros movie would have to be a 3 part in order to fit all the nuances and provide a way to show why an extra-universal being would be interested in bridging or merging the universes together. Perhaps they might be a "collector" of sorts, looking for prizes to add to their collections, or they seek to acquire the powerful artifacts of each universe to become the ultimate BBEG, or maybe they just want to destroy everything so that it would become "new". I think when people are saying that people want a cinematic "universe", people don't realize the fans are actually wanting a cinematic multiverse, where things could still be separated, yet have an option to collide, much like how the Smash Bros games show. At least in the first 3 games, it was implied that each character was in their own universe/timeline, then Master Hand plucked them out of it in order to force them to fight for his amusement, with the Victor ultimately fighting against him and (possibly) killing him. Not every movie needs to be set in the same universe, just as long as there is a feasible (and logical) way to justify seeing the universes collide.
It actually just dawned on me how well a Warioware movie would fit the Illumination style. Like, the art direction of Despicable Me wouldn't look too bad on Diamond City and even the grossout humor or pop music could be excused with Wario and idk Jimmy T respectively Also, vaguely related but the plot of Sing alone has a ton of similarities with the one of Mega Microgame$
If a Luigi's mansion movie would happen, it'd be dope if they added references to other franchises, just like they did with the Mario movie. and since Luigi's Mansion is a bit on the more horror side, it'd be cool if they added a Metroid reference since both franchises have horror as a theme
Another reason why a Mario Cinematic Universe would be better than a Nintendo Cinematic Universe would be because it gives a lot of obscure and forgotten characters from the Mario franchise a chance to come back in a new medium, like Geno for example!
Plus, if you count RareWare’s N64 characters who made an early debut in Diddy Kong Racing, then Banjo and Conker could also contribute material for a Mario Cinematic Universe. The studios in charge would just need to strike a deal with Microsoft, who now currently owns those characters. Granted, an adaptation of the Banjo-Kazooie games would be much easier to market as an extension of the Mario Cinematic Universe than an adaptation of “Conker’s Bad Fur Day”. The latter would need to have an R-rating like the Deadpool movies to be faithful, while a Mario Cinematic Universe is otherwise universally geared to be family friendly, more so than the Fox X-Men films. So in order for a Conker movie to work, the mainstream marketing would likely need to distance Conker from the Mario/D.K./Wario/Banjo films, but then maybe catch the theater audience off guard with surprise/hidden references and cameos linking the two properties.

In the face of a world where anything that isn't Marvel or Star Wars doesn't have a guaranteed future, playing it safe for a while is kinda a necessity for its continued existence.

@zucchini I think that the much simpler metric of "the movies make money and are received well enough to make more without negative backlash" is a better way of determining success, less room for interpretation. And even so, kaiju media is inherently more niche than either marvel or DC by a pretty significant margin. The fact the monsterverse has kept interest despite releasing one movie every 2-3 years as opposed to multiple movies every year certainly says something.
Imagine Dreamworks made the Zelda movie. Considering that a lot of their movies have a lot of great emotion mixed with comedy, maybe they could tackle Zelda. Bro imagine a Zelda film with Puss in Boots’ animation and art style 👀

I've always appreciated the fact that Smash Bros.'s actual story is that it's just a kid smashing action figures together to make them fight. That truly is the best justification you can have for that kind of game.

I think a smash bros film could potentially work like that, where the point of the movie is mainly just cool character interactions and sick fights without much need for setup. I understand and hard agree with Schaff's argument about how there shouldn't be an NCU, but I feel like he missed the point that you really don't need one for a Smash Bros movie, nor do you need that much setup for it. I think most people would accept it taking place in some non-canon inbetween world like in Subspace without worrying too much about it. Not saying such a film such necessarily be made - the other problems the list are still completely valid, but I don't think the film hinging on an ncu is one of them.

I think the premise of Smash Bros with the characters being toys is far more appealing than people give it credit for. It opens the door for ANYONE, being the kid who puts these toys together. Not just Sakarai or Andy from Toy Story, but ANYONE can be Master and Crazy Hand.

I love the MCU but the impact it did made people think that every movie needs to be connected and have a big pay off in the end with a crossover film, we can’t have solo movies or stories anymore, it’s honestly really sad and unfortunate.
Another point that you didn’t mention is that having a smash bros movie would be a mess because of how many characters there are, Ultimate had like 80+ characters, it would be a nightmare for writers to handle that much

Another issue is that there are now so many characters in Smash. If you have too many characters in a movie, then you will have people complaining that their favorites didn’t get a lot of screen time or character development, and it will be hard to give each character a decent amount of screen time. Plus, if they only decide to include certain characters to reduce the cast size and make it easier to create a better film storywise, then people will be complaining that their favorite characters are being excluded. Either way, it’s a lose-lose situation.
But I WOULD like a Banjo Kazooie movie, or even just another game. Or anything, really.

However, they would have to pick which characters would make it into the film, and if they don’t pick certain characters that some of the fans love to play as, then again, some people will end up being a little disappointed.
If they made a TV show, though, then they could probably get away with adding more characters. That said, I think that Smash would benefit more from a TV show adaptation than it would a film adaptation.

The idea of a Smash Bros movie is one of those things that sounds like the coolest shit ever when you’re a kid but progressively gets more flawed and impossible the more you actually think about it as an adult.
The tonal differences of these franchises would definitely make it more difficult. Imagine Chrom Fire Emblem says something like “my older sister died” and then Kirby is just like “POYO”. Heck in Smash itself the characters don’t really say much

That would be awesome! I was thinking more a film trilogy with the 3 games being slightly modified. I remember seeing some old clips where they did promotional media live action and had the proper acoustic versions of the songs and it looked so cool! I'm not sure if they'd go animated or live action with CGI effects, but I could see either working. I haven't seen Stranger Things, only clips and pics, but that kind of aesthetic would be really neat to see with EarthBound.
You forgot to mention how inconsistent the art style would have been. It would have been so jarring to see cartoony humans, semi-anime humans and pseudo-reslistic humans in the same movie/universe.

That would make an ssb movie even more jarring, for the fact that the supposed REAL characters with completely different art styles to be in the same place.
I feel like it’s important to note that Nintendo bought their own studio and plan on making their own movies WITHOUT Illumination, so I believe that Nintendo properties are more likely to be efficiently translated into film. I still agree with your point though that a Smash Bros. Movie would be too convoluted and incoherent. Movies are movies, not fanfics.

Instead of adapting Smash Brothers to cinema, I think it would do much better as a TV show with a nonlinear narrative. That way, each episode can focus on a few different characters at a time instead of cramming a whole bunch of characters in an hour and a half long movie. It would be somewhat cluttered for sure, but nowhere near as extravagant as it'd be in cinema.
Me personally we could have like 10 episodes introducing the characters then have them go in an arena and have a 1v1 tournament and have their be a prize so they have the incentive to fight each other and have like 50 fights per episode and each episode be around an hour then have the later episodes have less fights so It will be over in like 75 episodes

I'd sort of be skeptical mainly because I know Cartoon Saloon for films not connected to massive IPs. Though Zelda does have all the aesthetics that fit Cartoon Saloon's brand, the worldbuilding and universe is way larger than The Secret of Kells, Song of the Seas and Wolfwalkers (which encorporate Irish folklore) or The Breadwinner (which is set in real life Taliban-ruled Afghanistan) combined.
Then again, they did make a short for Star Wars: Visions which proves that they can at least work with a massive IP.

Of course it wouldn’t be canon and the characters would be toys like in Smash, but rather than fighting, they would go to various locations from their games (which are just setpieces now), crack jokes about their franchises, and have fun together. @Voltron77 The issue with this a Smash Bros movie/Nintendo Cinematic Universe is that you can only use like 6 Nintendo franchises. Mario, Zelda, Metriod, DK, Pokemon, and Kirby. The other Nintendo franchises don't have that mainstream popularity or universal appeal in order to benefit from a big theatrical movie plus most of them can't really transition into movies. Maybe Punch Out and Star Fox can, but those series aren't that popular. Series like Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Kid Icurus, Star Fox, F-Zero, Mother, Arms, Punch Out, Splatoon, etc only work as video games. Plus if you want 3rd party characters that's another issue.

There's already a Smash movie that was made, called "There Will be Brawl" available on RUclips right now. They even got Ganondorf's voice actor to reprise his role, as well as to voice other characters.

I honestly think a 2d animated series or movie would work a lot stronger, especially with breath of the wild. Not only do I think it would do a lot of the visual elements of the series more justice - for example, I could not imagine if the Netflix Castlevania was live action instead. I also feel it could be used mor effectively to convey link not speaking.
From my admittedly limited experience with the Zelda franchise... Link talks... just not audibly for the players. If this is a recent change with Breath of The Wild then you can at least understand my confusion with these points that you and Schafrillas are bringing up. Legend of Zelda could probably be a pretty damn good movie/series. Link talking isn't really a big deal.

That’s sort of my query as well. Fighting game movies typically don’t have strong narratives unless you’re going to focus on individual characters and their connections to each other. But if they’re all from completely different franchises, that’s going to be rough and haphazard storytelling.
Even using the premise of “some massive force pulled these beings into a random place for them to fight to victory,” it feels like the narrative will be peppered with pointless spectacle fights before everyone has to “team-up and defeat the big bad that brought them there.” Which, okay, but it’s not likely to create a compelling movie.

Yeah that's the biggest difference. DC and Marvel all feature characters who's stories often revolve around each other. Some of the best comic stories are cross overs.

I mean it was a kind of Batman origin story as well, but that was never like a “OOOOHH LOOOK! It’s BATMAN! It’s his STORY! Wow!” The focus was ON THE JOKER, which was great. They didn’t forget about Batman, or more specifically and accurately, Bruce Wayne, as the Wayne’s are significant to plot, and how tied Batman and Joker are together as characters, but that doesn’t take away the focus off of Joker or try to hype up the next film, it just sticks to itself, which is great!

That last point’s mentality is actually one I’ve had with mariokart for a while. The mario universe is so massive and has so many great characters and locales to pull from, and I feel like when people ask for the guest characters to take up more of the series it just feels like people are missing the fact there’s already so much potential there
Considering all the new characters that Tour has added to the series, it’s clear that there’s still tons of untouched possibilities in the Mario series that Mario Kart can use.

There's actually an old reason why they don't. Part of it was a sort of 'sterilization' of the franchise in the late 2000's, early 2010's.
You notice after Super Paper Mario that the Paper Mario games started going down this idea of generic Toad designs? How the old designs of the enemies started to look closer to the designs from the New Super Mario Bros games?
Nintendo wanted to sort of "scrub" this expanded Mario Universe idea out to make it all uniform. So if it's not from a main Mario game, it's not something they want to be a part of it.

Also, with regards to Kirby in particular... eh, I personally think that a Kirby movie would be better off being handled by a Japanese animation studio, as the Kirby series is super popular in Japan, and while HAL have been making a greater effort to push the series overseas, particularly with Forgotten Land's success, I don't think it's gotten to the point where a bunch of people working at a western studio happen to be fans of the series yet. Really, as long as the film is treated with just as much care as The Super Mario Bros. Movie was given by Illumination and Nintendo, I'd be happy.

As someone that has worked at Laika I can say translating Kirby character anatomy to stop motion would be the biggest nightmare. Metroid or LoZ would be beautiful in Laika style though. Unfortunately I really doubt they would go after such big established properties.

i was thinking, if the actual SSB lore is that they're all just toys in a kid's bedroom, then they should adapt that idea, like Zathura or Jumanji, instead of this whole "already living in our world" idea that everyone is thinking about.
That's kinda what I was imagining for the possible (eventual?) Smash Bros movie. Don't try to tie in everything into one universe, but rather keep them all separated so each series can have a chance to be fleshed out on the big screen, with no contamination in-between. Then, once each franchise has at least one or two movies to establish what's going on in that universe, have a extra-universal threat start making its presence known.
Basically, make the movies stand alone, but the Smash Movie MULTI-versal, where the universes collide. The only down side ti that would be the Smash Bros movie would have to be a 3 part in order to fit all the nuances and provide a way to show why an extra-universal being would be interested in bridging or merging the universes together.
Perhaps they might be a "collector" of sorts, looking for prizes to add to their collections, or they seek to acquire the powerful artifacts of each universe to become the ultimate BBEG, or maybe they just want to destroy everything so that it would become "new".
I think when people are saying that people want a cinematic "universe", people don't realize the fans are actually wanting a cinematic multiverse, where things could still be separated, yet have an option to collide, much like how the Smash Bros games show. At least in the first 3 games, it was implied that each character was in their own universe/timeline, then Master Hand plucked them out of it in order to force them to fight for his amusement, with the Victor ultimately fighting against him and (possibly) killing him.
Not every movie needs to be set in the same universe, just as long as there is a feasible (and logical) way to justify seeing the universes collide.

It actually just dawned on me how well a Warioware movie would fit the Illumination style. Like, the art direction of Despicable Me wouldn't look too bad on Diamond City and even the grossout humor or pop music could be excused with Wario and idk Jimmy T respectively

If a Luigi's mansion movie would happen, it'd be dope if they added references to other franchises, just like they did with the Mario movie. and since Luigi's Mansion is a bit on the more horror side, it'd be cool if they added a Metroid reference since both franchises have horror as a theme

Another reason why a Mario Cinematic Universe would be better than a Nintendo Cinematic Universe would be because it gives a lot of obscure and forgotten characters from the Mario franchise a chance to come back in a new medium, like Geno for example!
Plus, if you count RareWare’s N64 characters who made an early debut in Diddy Kong Racing, then Banjo and Conker could also contribute material for a Mario Cinematic Universe. The studios in charge would just need to strike a deal with Microsoft, who now currently owns those characters.
Granted, an adaptation of the Banjo-Kazooie games would be much easier to market as an extension of the Mario Cinematic Universe than an adaptation of “Conker’s Bad Fur Day”. The latter would need to have an R-rating like the Deadpool movies to be faithful, while a Mario Cinematic Universe is otherwise universally geared to be family friendly, more so than the Fox X-Men films. So in order for a Conker movie to work, the mainstream marketing would likely need to distance Conker from the Mario/D.K./Wario/Banjo films, but then maybe catch the theater audience off guard with surprise/hidden references and cameos linking the two properties.

In the face of a world where anything that isn't Marvel or Star Wars doesn't have a guaranteed future, playing it safe for a while is kinda a necessity for its continued existence.

@zucchini I think that the much simpler metric of "the movies make money and are received well enough to make more without negative backlash" is a better way of determining success, less room for interpretation.
And even so, kaiju media is inherently more niche than either marvel or DC by a pretty significant margin. The fact the monsterverse has kept interest despite releasing one movie every 2-3 years as opposed to multiple movies every year certainly says something.

No he wouldn't he relishes in a snappy cartoony style, Metroid is all about the moody atmosphere, in fact you couldn't really make a better Metroid movie than Alien and Aliens which is already what inspired it.
