Welcome Back, Kirby! - Kirby & The Forgotten Land Игры
I once saw someone say that being a Kirby fan is the easiest thing in the world-and they are right. Kirby fans just sit back and get game after game of exactly what they want, with some experimental side titles thrown in. HAL Labs went absolutely nuts with the 30th anniversary, with releasing three games in the span of a year. Forgotten Land in particular was amazing fun because you don’t really see 3D platformers outside of Mario these days and it reawakened my love for that genre.
Great video!
Thanks! And yeah I got into Kirby a lot later than most so it's been a blast to catch up on all the older games. Still to this day though I haven't played a handful there's just so many
I know who you're talking about, but it's extremely true lol. We didn't only got literally 3 games a year, but also got new merchandise, concerts, interviews and even more lost media about the series being found: more footage of the cancelled Kirby GCN.
This is what happens when a company loves what they do and they want to make their fans happy
it's the easiest thing because it's hard to not be fan of this adorable puffball.
In stark contrast to being a Sonic fan
It still amazes me that Sakurai looks younger now than he did 30 years a go.
first
Bahaha a man that doesn't age
Fun fact: He hasn't been involved in the franchise since Nightmare in Dreamland for the Gameboy Advanced all the way back in 2005. Most aspects of the modern Kirby franchise can be attributed to its current director: Shinya Kumazaki.
@@extrahistory8956 Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land didn't release in 2005, it released in 2002. It wasn't his last Kirby game either. I don't think Sakurai was involved with Nightmare in Dream Land besides developing the original game.
Does he age in reverse ?
Kirby is such a wholesome and super great franchise. Super excited for kirby's future. Forgotten Land was amazing and i don't think any kirby game is objectively bad.
first
Yep pretty much every Kirby game has its own strengths and none are bad as a game. Could argue there are some that are weaker within the franchise but on their own are still enjoyable
nah
i was gonna argue but i cant think of one, they even made KIRBY GOLF and its awesome like wht guy how
@@kingtember5376?
It's funny because Kirby is so recognizable even outside of Kirby/Nintendo fans, if you show Kirby to a a few people outside of the sphere they would probably recognize him as "the cute pink blob from Smash Bros", Kirby merch is super marketable, even to people who have never played the games
Hehe, sphere
To think that Forgotten Land would not only be one of Kirby’s best games but to be the game that broke the series’ sales records. It’s great to see that the puff ball hasn’t lost his touch.
Not only that though but 30 years and he's finally gone full 3D at least in a platforming sense. Crazy that he's been able to stay so established for so long whereas if you imagined other franchises still mainly being 2D 30 years later, it'd be hard to believe they were still prospering
I don't think the game is honestly that good. It's definitely not bad, but I would put it somewhere around the higher middle. The lack of copy abilities and limited movepools feels pretty crappy overall, and no, the upgrades for the most part don't mitigate this issue, because they don't fundamentally change the way the ability plays, or even change it at all, really. A few do, but most don't.
The only copy ability that has a fully fleshed out movepool is Morpho Knight's Sword, and that's because it has all of these inputs that other abilities just don't have, like holding the guard button and pressing B, or holding the guard button and pressing B in the air. None of the other abilities utilize holding the guard button at all.
@@carnage0685 sword also has a guard dash. Also, yeah, while I still think the game is amazing, your compaints, along with a few others like bosses having similarly limited movesets, are legitimate disappointments in the game. Espacially after Star Allies felt really fleshed out with ability and boss movesets (Forgotten Land imo only beats it in level design and graphics). But, I always thought of Forgotten Land as. Kirby’s adventure type thing, where they’ll (hopefully) expand everything later on, so I’m not too worried.
@@carnage0685 understand these complaints but I don't think those issues hinder the game that badly.
More, he _enhanced_ his touch! It's incredible!
I always thought Kirby Triple Deluxe was called that because the name sounded like a high-calorie menu item at a fast food restaurant and in this game with his hypernova ability he's more than apt to scarf it down
My favorite Nintendo franchise. Kirby deserves all the love and success in the world
I was never even really interested in Kirby until The Forgotten Land came out. It's impossible to not love the music and level design in it. While I'm not going to be sucked into a whirlpool of Kirby Mania like I have with other franchises I got into over the years, I'm glad that Forgotten Land exists.
Honestly if nothing else the OSTs from Kirby games have always been great. So even if you never end up playing the games I'm sure putting on a Kirby mix will do you wonders
Do it. Get sucked into the whirlpool of "Kirby Mania"... it'll be worth it and Kirby _won't let you drown._

Kirby is always a great gateway into converting partners trust me I'd know ;) then again a lot of the switch's library is similar in that sense
Same kirby star allies was the game that got me into the kirby franchise in 2018
My first Kirby game was Return To Dreamland, so it was amazing for the deluxe remaster to come out with so many new things, my favourite game is probably Forgotten Land though since it has such a charming feel
Kirby is the franchise with the passion and dedication of an indie game series, with the budget and resources of a AAA series.
That is 99% of Nintendo franchises

I actually think Kirby and the Forgotten Land is the best game I have played on Switch even if it is not my personal favorite. It is simultaneously great for casual players, players looking for a challenge and completionists alike.
Easy playthroughs: "Ha ha, this is fun!"
Hard playthroughs: *aNd HeRe We Are!*
I feel kirby has always been at least a somewhat big franchise, but especially RTDL onwards has consistently put out some of the greatest games I have ever played in my life
I do like since Kirby was getting more popular I’ve seen more RUclips videos of people reacting to Kirby lore and seeing them go WTF. Never fails to make me laugh
Kirby I didn't initially like, I liked harder games, but as I got older I found a bigger appreciation for easy games like Kirby and klonoa.
Now Kirby is my favorite "easy" series, It has alot of charm and the lores great, and I also really enjoy the side modes
One of my favorite series ever. From the imaginative worlds, the charming characters, the sweet little stories and super insteresting lore. I think that Hal really did a great job in creating a series that literally anyone of any age and any skill level can thoroughly enjoy to the fullest. I cant wait to see where our little hero of the stars will go next and I hope more people continue to try his games and experience the journies within them. This was a great video
I started with Forgotten Land when it came and have played a few games since and KIRBY’S SO GOAT GOAT GOAT PEAK FICTION RAW KINO SWAG

The internets favorite Nintendo character is Mario
Nintendos favorite character is Kirby
Kirby is low key one of the most powerful characters ever since he can steal any ability
It’s one of those Nintendo game franchises that people really seem to enjoy and expanded upon its original concept.
Kirby really popped off with his 30th Anniversary!
15:10 the fact that we have an actual game called "Kirby Battle Royale" in this series will never not bring me joy.
Also, great review! I'm surprised you didn't really cover Planet Robobot more, since it has been considered one the best in the series by the fanbase, as well as the Star Allies DLC waves, a first (and probably last) of the series when HAL experimented on the potential for making seasonal content for a video game.
Thanks! And yeah as much as I could dive into each game specifically, my videos tend to just give an overview of the whole franchise which unfortunately means I can only give a small mention to each game otherwise the video would most likely go on for an hour or more with my rambling lmao
great topic! Honestly I think there are lots of underdiscussed parts of kirby's consistency. For one, its really the most consistent AAA 2d platformer series in my opinion! even compared to 2d mario, who's kind of had an identity crisis and bailed over to maker for the last decade. you look around and its like, donkey kong country can't keep itself consistent, rayman only came back briefly, castlevania has been asleep for ages, mega man and sonic are uh, always trying, but... of all the gigantic industry-defining series to have been born in the 80s/90s, I think only HAL's (and briefly flagship's) devotion has stayed steady all these years. if star allies was more well received right during the nintendo positivity of 2017-2019 I think you'd have seen this idea of kirby as the most consistent and enduring 2d platformer series going around an awful lot more. incredibly curious to see whats next after the remake.
Can't help but respect HALs dedication to the franchise. Honestly it's not like the games are breakout successes selling 10s of millions of copies each either. To be able to still pump out games on a consistent basis truly shows the passion and love they have for Kirby and that reflects in the quality of their games.
@@Legend-of-Kai exactly, exactly! when I saw people complaining about how many games we got for Kirby's 30th anniversary, I couldn't help but point out that Kirby really get similar treatment to Pokemon because its a companies first priority.
it's a bit grim, but if you line up all the groundbreaking side-scrollers from the eighties and nineties and place them in an elimination gameshow kirby was the unnasuming one you never thought would last till the finals, but he did😂 metroids rare, yoshi is even more background, mario seems to be going through something... somehow kirby is nintendos one constant!
@mellow yep I wonder if even HAL knew that they had a winner on their hands. Metroid is finally coming back which is good to see but definitely had some rough patches, Yoshi as you've said is almost a background franchise at this point and Mario isn't even really a consistent platformer any more dudes too busy doing sports and party games and Kart racing to stay consistent enough like Kirby
@@Legend-of-Kai rtdl, robobot and triple deluxe & forgotten land are truly some of my favorite games of all time so while Im satisfied, its such an exciting time to wonder whats next
Hell ye, this is what I’ve been waiting for! Kirby is such an interesting topic, in spite of how simple everything is.
It’s wild that for the first full 3d kirby game, they really knocked it out of the park, and the sale/praise reflect that.
He never sells the best, but is for sure super recognizable, and loved by so many. It’s such a wholesome story of how a cute character developed into a constant, fun series with loving fans and devs who love to spoil us. Hal Labs truly deserves more recognition.
The best part about Kirby is that everyone knows that he is the strongest being in all of gaming, even Kratos fears the pink ball of doom.
According to some tiers , there are most powerful characters in gaming. But he is one of the most powerful for sure
@@LoiValdes KIRBY MURDERSTOMPS EVERY FORM OF MAJIN BUU!
That's a fantasy and, in part, where the toxic side of the fandom is. He is strong, most strong, but people go over their heads on what they claim and no one calls them out.
@Memes Within Memes Awaits You No need to be disrespectful.
@Memes Within Memes Awaits You Kirby can copy that as well tho, you have Metal, Stone and Archer with full invulnerability...
Just like royal guard...
The pink puffball’s consistency actually is why I’m hoping HE gets a movie more than any other Nintendo Franchise, not only would Kirby be perfect for Illumination if we have to have them making Nintendo movies, as the cartoony graphics and stunning spectacle of the Mario Movie is practically Kirby incarnate. The characters could also be silent and force the audience to interpret the characters however they think they are, and yes Dedede should be the main character, the star of the show you could say.
I agree, I think it will translate well as a movie.
I love that the given reason for going with the name "Kirby" is essentially the JP equivalent of naming him something like "Bruce."
Im so happy someone finally made a video about this! 😊 appreciation for this series and all this pink puff ball has done for me and lots of you can feel scarce sometimes, but im really happy that for the people who do see how much love and charm is put into this little puff ball, we can express it together. You've made tonight very special
Amazing editing man, you deserve more recognition.
Thanks a lot!
My first video game I ever owned was Kirby's Dreamland for the original Gameboy. I could not put it down. I've missed out on so many good Kirby games since.
As someone who's been playing Kirby since the GBA era, every game I've played from that point has never disappointed me in the slightest! It's one of my most played series in video games, and I look forward to seeing how much further Hal Laboratory can go on this series! Also, I'm still begging them to make a Kirby Air Ride HD!😆
I always say this. Get yourself a girl who loves you as much as HAL loves Kirby. The incredible effort and care they put into this lil guy is nothing short of inspiring
I keep getting girls who say they'll treat me like a Kirby, but instead they treat me like a Sonic or even an Alex Kidd.
one of my favorite franchises of all time I love the pink puffball so much
Kirby is one of Nintendo's characters that always sticks with you, once you've seen him, you never forget him, he's had his series running for so long and is so popular, who would've known that his design as a placeholder would've turned into something this huge?
10:00 King Dedede was busy mourning the loss of Sakurai
Unlike other franchises which trying to be edgy and mature, Kirby remains cute and charming.
Unless you read in the pause screens of the secret bosses for lore
2:03 The irony that universal and nintendo are so chummy these days what with the theme parks and helping them make the Mario movie via Illumination Entertainment studios is not lost on me.
Kirby is truly the best
The three things Kirby games have and what make them great: constency, there's better games than others but everything is at least good, dev's love into their game, it's very clear that the developpers like their game and like making them, complexity but still in simplicity, there's two way to experience kirby, just doing a normal playthrough simple and easy, may also do post game stuff (that I like to think are almost obligatory to do because that's the best part of the games) and you'll like it, but if you want to go deeper, difficulty and the lore of this franchise are insanely good, everything make sense, is connected.
This games can be for everyone, child who want to try this cute game and have fun, adults who grew up with the franchise and want to see what new story has been invented and challenge the true arena.
The Kirby Franchise is definitely the purist example of a triple A studio showing actual care and attention to the people who buy and enjoy their games, and the games themselves. HAL is easily one of the best big studios around, to the point where it feels slightly creepy how good they are. As someone who's been playing the Kirby games pretty much since they were invented, it's really interesting seeing how consistent the quality of the games are. Probably the most consistent series of games I've seen.
I think the biggest issue with Kirby though, isn't directly with the games themselves, but with the crediting of the quality of the games, and who's really skyrocketed the series to the modern day quality. Ignoring all the background work for simplicity's sake, the two big names are Masahiro Sakurai and Shinya Kumuzaki. It's kind of sad to see how almost everyone credits Sakurai for the success of Kirby, and while he was the original creator of the series, I'd give almost all the credit to Shinya Kumuzaki, who's really raised the quality of the series to new heights. He's the main person behind the entire modern renaissance of Kirby, throughout Epic Yarn, all the way to Forgotten Lands. Kumuzaki's history with art and games is really interesting, and he's the exact type of person who someone'd want to run a series like Kirby. He does not get enough credit for how good of a director he really is. And his art is quite amazing as well.
While Sakurai might be the father of Kirby, Kumuzaki is the person who's perfected the series.
This video was so well put together, thank you!
I loved the original gameboy game... but as a 9 year old boy at the time, I would have never played it if he was pink on the cover. 😄
Kirbys Blowout Blast is a Gem on 3DS .
I like being a Kirby fan and a Sonic fan because if sonic isnt good or theres too much discourse i can just go hang out with Kirby
Uh ackshually Triple Deluxe was the first to feature the background game play. Triple is 3 and Deluxe is the D, so it means 3D. Also it means Triple De, which means DeDeDe, because it heavily features Kind Dedede as a pivotal character.
Well as someone who follow the franchise for nearly 12 years I am so happy kirby entered my life build my approach of freindly but keep on gaurd when being attacked, the copy abilities which was my introduction of getting powers from your enemies which I didn't knew snyone else far later on, the gameplay is easy to play and hard to master which that how I enjoy games usually they be harder but if the character is easy to understand and offer challenge with the mastery that were I get my fun, the stories while presented in a simple manner really get into me from the impact from the final villains to seeing the main cast work togheter really give me good times and having mutiple ways to explore the games having usually really great boss line ups which does really great job at being the pivot point when the difficulty rise up to arena modes offer a great way to implament boss rush without being tacked on really give me a lot of reasons to follow the franchise for long and keep it consistenly as my favorite franchise of all time
Kirby is one of the most consistently good franchise
Idk if you can tell but Kirby is my favorite game character I’ve been going on a been binge playing every single game and I’m in love I’m so glad Kirby is getting the recognition it deserves
I don't know why, but watching this game me a pang of nostalgia. I really miss going on my Game Boy, DS, Wii, or 3DS to play Kirby.
While it may not be Pokemon, Zelda, or especially Mario, Kirby holds a dear place in my heart, as my first ever game I played was Kirby and the Amazing Mirror.
This is a good video.
Edit: fun fact, I beat Kirby and the Amazing Mirror more than 450 times. It may be a tedious process to learn every single part of the game and its hidden paths, it is certainly very fun to learn.
I didn't realize that the original Kirby's Dreamland was the highest selling game for so long. People just don't really talk about that game, like at all. It's not a bad game, but it clearly doesn't bring us everything Kirby has to offer because he doesn't copy abilities.
Great video by the way. The Kirby franchise has always been a favorite throughout my childhood in the 90s to my adulthood now. Even the spinoffs like Kirby Block Ball and Kirby Star Stacker I enjoyed a lot and I hope to see them on the Gameboy portion of Switch online.
I also wish they would release a new Kirby Dream Course as that spinoff is amazing and would be even more amazing if you can build custom courses.
Neither did I before doing this video. I get that first games tend to sell well as it's something new, but to realise not even fan favourites like super star or Planet robobot got close was certainly a big surprise
This is very enjoyable to watch. I am a quick fan of this channel. Your voice is soothing too
This is why I love Kirby ❤
I’ve been a Kirby fan since 96. I’m glad but also socked to see the sudden rise of Kirby popularity
I found out about Kirby in Melee, my first game would be Kirby’s Adventure borrowed from a family member, it was fun however looking back on the NES original it had moments of slowdown, it’s not enough to drag the game down, I’m guessing the developers were pushing NES to its limit, Nightmare in Dreamland fixes that issue anyway, I would go on to check out Air Ride which is also a ton of fun and it had the Achievements System before PS3 and Xbox 360, Amazing Mirror would really solidify me as a Kirby Fan and is the best Metroidvania! Can’t wait to see people play it online together via NSO!
Playing a Kirby game gives so much happiness and peace, you know, even the devil likes Kirby

I didn't know about the placeholder text before Forgotten Land's announcement. It checks out with what I know about the lead developer's other artwork.
Kirby’s always been awesome for me. Just recently we’ve had The Forgotten Land and Return to Dreamland Deluxe, one being an awesome 3D game and the other being an amazing example of how to do a remake right (seriously, compare RTD Deluxe to BDSP and it’s not a competition)
And games like Return to Dreamland (both versions), Triple Deluxe, Planet Robobot, and The Forgotten Land just can’t be forgotten
Kirby has been one of my favorite video game franchises of all time! I'm so happy that his series rose up again!
I thought it was called Triple Deluxe because triple (3) (D)eluxe. I thought it was a 3D pun for the 3DS
You're correct, it slipped my mind while I was writing the script for this video but that is most definitely part of its naming convention
It’s interesting that your rise of series does better than the downfall stuff lol
He's one tough cream puff. He's more than you think, he's got maximum pink!
Kirby being a tough sounding name to juxtapose with his soft appearance, Kirby being the surname of Nintendo's lawyer who helped secure the legal distinction of Donkey Kong from King Kong, and also a prominent brand of high quality vacuum cleaners associated with his sucking power was a perfect storm of a name.
Kirby actually bears a passing resemblance to an axolotl salamander in his facial features, which is what got me to warm up to them.

Ironically enough, they were right, just not in the way they anticipated.

Thanks a lot means so much ! I'll definitely have a look into it. Can't say it would be a super positive video like my rise of considering its state but definitely would be interesting to delve into thanks for the suggestion
It's really nice to see Kirby being loved a lot. I was obsessed with the franchise since 2002 when I got my first gaming console, the GBA, and Kirby's Night mare in Dreamland as my first game for it. Sadly, my ASD fixation for it made me the target of bullying, pushing people away from the series, and even having a 5th grade teacher shame me (ex. scolded for putting Kirby into a re-writing of the 3 little pigs as a ex machina). It makes me wonder if the gaming community had a lot of hostility towards the franchise and the fans. I remember a site that hosted flash video game parody cartoons calling him stupid.
I am not into the franchise as I once was, but I am happy I can show my love for it without fear. Still playing the games and now my younger sister gets to join in.
So happy to see my favourite Nintendo franchise finally getting the recognition it deserves
I love Kirby. Just an all around fun character and game franchise.
I’m a huge fan of tonal dissonance. When the tone of a thing is different from its appearance so Kirby already checks boxes for me. Never have I had a game series so consistently cutesy and yet had horrific story beats that only get worse the more you think about it.
overwhelmingly cute Orb in forgor land is a GOAT among platformers
ive been catching up with kirby again since forgotten land came out, have 100%ed that and robobot, got everything except the keychains in TD, only really beat star allies (i need to do the dlc stuff lol), and am working towards beating extra mode in rtdldx (ive got all the energy spheres in the normal mode and have all platinums on magolor epilogue)
safe to say, i love kirby again
It's truly amazing that HAL is able to constantly make Kirby games in not that long of time periods and not have the games feel rushed or incomplete!
3:15 no that’s not because the team couldn’t decide what colors they wanted for kirby, before they wanted pink a lot of the crew thought of him as yellow as a lot of Japanese cute characters where yellow. But a lot of the others wanted pink blue and even green. So they just made him white for now, later on I forgot why but they chose pink.
That’s why in later releases when there’s multiple Kirby’s the first version is yellow referencing the color Kirby was almost going to be.
Sakurai had always wanted Kirby to be Pink even before the games release ss puyo puyo that's why I said it was a mix up with the localisation team as they didn't know that but yes the other colours did reference the multiple colours others thought of
Yellow kirby even got a name Keeby (i think)
I played Kirby Superstar about 6 years ago, and it is one of my favorite games of all time, it's too easy for my taste but it's just so charming.
Don't forgot his lore
I imagine that while this is a wholesome game... This still has dark secrets
