Honestly, whilst I like loose trucks in terms of steering, I can't help but notice there's a 'speed wobble' going on when going faster. So tight trucks for me it is!
@@ChadRockwell Yikes! That's terrible to hear man. But yeah, the speed wobbles are a real thing. I actually was longboarding with fairly loose trucks on somewhat rough ground, going very fast. Then I hit more smooth terrain, picked up even more speed and almost tripped over my own legs due to serious speed wobble. I had the foresight of not pushing a third time, but instead jumping on the board and find my balance and slow down first. Otherwise I would have slammed the ground for sure. Oh, and it was flat terrain. Just imagine what would happen down hill. Anyone hill bombing even lower hills is pretty insane if they're not tightening trucks. Did you ever consider skating again? Or is the knee so messed up that it's become a no-go?
@@PHeMoX Injury’s can be tough to come back from. I know I was never the same after after nearly snapping my ankle on a 5-6ft gap.. healing your body is one thing, but overcoming the mental fear of hurting yourself again is the other part of the battle that most people don’t talk about after they physically recover.
I love to see people try my board and hearing them complain about how loose my trucks is, and then watch them tic-tac while turning while I surf even around the corners with ease
I always skate mine logo out for a while then when I can see the shape is being worn down I will flip them logo in. I skate spitfire formula 4s full conical and ride mostly bowls and transition.
Now I am skating only a year by now, but from what I´ve learned so far, here are my experiences: regarding deck size, I started with 8.38 and tried an 8" afterwards, now I am at 8.5 8 was definetely to small for my size 12 feet, when I switched to an 8.5 I felt that I was improving very quickly. as for wheelsize: I began with very standart 52mm and then tried 55mm, nowadays my goldilocks are 54mm. I switch betweem 100A classic shapes and 97A conical shape wheels depending on my mood and what I wanna skate. they both work great, the harder wheels obviously slide better, the softer ones prevent me from slipping out on wooden ramps and are much better for cruising down the street. Bushings are very important to me actually: with my first complete came some tensor trucks, which had a double cone combo and they were really squirly. I switched them for a pair of 95A barrel/cone and it was much, much better right away. just lately I put on my very first indy 159 and holy shit what a difference. these trucks are amazing, they turn so well, I feel like surfing. however I had to switch out the bushings right away, they were so soft, I got wheelbite the instant I stepped on the board. switched the stock bushings for 94A barrel/cone indy bushings and now its awesome. dont overtighten you kingpin nut! rather try harder bushings! what also makes a difference is concave. well mostly not, because 98% of decks you can buy have medium concave, so its not a big deal. but my very first complete had high concave, combined with the squirly trucks, which were also more narrow than the deck (8.125 vs 8.38) that made for a really unstable setup, for a beginner. I recently tried the old deck with steep concave again, but it wasnt right for me. my feet hurt from standing on it too long and when I put my foot on it, the concave makes me wobble left and right unintentionally. so my current deck has a very mellow medium concave, still not low concave, but a low medium one, which I find is pretty good. overall I can tell from my short experience that you shouldnt worry too much about it, if you keep your mind open, you will find out what suits you best over time and that process I think can be alot of fun. also yeah it doesnt matter that much what you skate, but how you skate it. no setup will make me land that pop shuvit automatically and whenever I try someone elses board, whatever I can do on my board, I can do on theirs as well, only with more difficulty. so thats what I think: the right setup for you can make things a bit easier, but its still skateboarding, so its gonna be hard, and fun ;-)
Thanks for this comment. Im skating an 8.5 after skating an 8 for years. The 8 was too little for my size 11 shoe. The 8.5 feels good but god damn is the board I got heavy. Ive been learning kickflips on it pretty well, but I just got an 8.38 board online. I just want to say I think height can be a factor in choosing board length too, I am 5’10 and do not have long legs. Most 8.5 boards are 32+ inches long, so I feel like my drag with my front foot is not as exaggerated so I cant level my board out super high very easily, it takes a lot of effort. My 8.38 Deck I just got came at 31.5 inches, looking forward to trying it out
Very helpful thanks. I skated a lot in the late 80s on 10in boards. Lately all my joints are getting stiff and am thinking getting back on a board will limber me up. Thanks heaps, all inspired and am building a reisssue 10in board
I never comment on RUclips, but I decided to start riding downhill and street boarding at 33 years old. That was a year ago, so I'm really only watching this video to see if my assumptions are correct. The last point about shoe size should be discussed further, because a properly fitting shoe makes all of the difference, even if some don't realize it. One day I was wearing a perfectly fit pair of Adidas, cheap and simple. I've always worn BMX or skate brands, but never pushed the envelope on a board I friend put a board in my hand and we started riding a parking lot with nice transitions. Then he kept on me about riding for months. I was scared to ride in certain situation for about 3-4 months. Now it feels natural. The fit of a shoe changed my world, because I felt connected to the grip for the first time, instead of my shoes begging me to stay on the board. I've seen the videos with kids riding barefoot, that would've never been me. If the shoe fits, riders are more likely to do well.
I live in a (relatively) small town on the edge of a big city. About 10 minutes away from my house, there was a small skate shop. I got a skateboard for around £30 and it’s lasted me almost 6 years, and while it’s worn down, I can still ride it.
As a cruiser my first board (a amazon cheap kinda off brand pennyboard that still looked exactly like a penny just with the logo) had terrible bearings when rolling freely but I was surprised to see that my board rolled amazingly when riding and I recently got a longboard with better free rolling bearings and I really can’t feel a difference when riding 😂
When I very first started, I tried keeping my trucks tight cuz I was told it would be more stable. I couldn't land anything and I actually gave up pretty quick. I recently started up again and my trucks are more in the middle. I landed my first Ollie and shuvit this week and I think it's because while riding around I felt a lot more comfortable.
@@sleepingturtle32 when the trucks are tight, you tend to extend your knees more and are less comfortable. It might seem counterintuitive cuz you'll be less stable when you land but being comfortable on "take off" might be more important.
@@mklinger23 hmm. Okay. That my be my problem. Although I’m not sure if my trucks would be considered “tight”. I’m having a problem where my ollies literally don’t go any higher than a few centimeters off the ground
@@sleepingturtle32 really bend your knees. You should be able to almost touch the ground. Also, make sure you're jumping along with popping and sliding.
Used to skate so loose my friends called mine the Deathboard 😂 Too many scooter freaks where I was when I used to skate so needed the added agility to dodge em. I'd love to pick up skating again but do not bounce back as well as I used to. Two simultaneous wrist breaks shook me up lol.
I can’t tell you how many scooter kids I have taken out (by accident) at the skatepark over the years. They just don’t pay attention; and a skateboard can’t stop very quick when traveling at top speed. Lol
Advice- super super tight trucks on concrete helps you feel like your surfing and tapped into the concrete and you need less energy to move up tiny hills. That’s pretty much the only positive to tight loose is better
(My opinion, for me and how I am) Loose Trucks - Benefits - helps with landings that aren't perfectly straight as you can quickly steer back. Down fall - It's a tad harder to set up because you need to be perfectly balanced straight, then set up. Tight Trucks - Benefits - Easier to set up because you're really not worried about steering straight, and setting up. Down fall - You pretty much have to land as straight as possible or you'll lose it.
This videos is sick! ive got size 13 and have been skating on 7-8 inch boards all my life, and it blowd. Id say find a board that fits your feet size, my arches are so sore from having both my toes and heels always hanging off. 9 inch board here we come
For someone like me, who is 46 and has restarted skating after some 20-something years, I find that softer wheels and soft risers help to minimise the potential for impact injuries. Skating is helping with my fitness and to help in losing weight, so I want to keep skating for as long as possible. Soft Cruiser style wheels (85a) and rubber risers is what I currently ride on one of my set ups; the other is has 95a PU street wheels, but again with soft rubber risers. As I remember Pig Rails, I have a set of rails as well.
Peacan Animates i’m 13 and have a walmart board. Plastic trucks and it rolls for less than 4 seconds. But it’s ok because i’m still learning how to skate anyway
I paid like 10 $ for a very good used skateboard bruh. my brother got a skateboard for about 13 $ because the packaging was smashed. they’re both pretty good I think.
Riser pads we’re more for the 80s old school vert decks cause the boards were pretty much flat with no concave. (Now people today only use risers for if they do old school vert skateboarding or old school flat ground freestyle)
Just wanna say that today is my first day of skateboarding And i skate very nicely.... Thank you vlskate and yt tutorials I learnt in just (not gonna lie) 1 hour to control the direction ..😁😁😀😀
My Wal-Mart board was stolen seven years ago and today I adopted this skateboard I found behind a dumpster. It's a thin board with hard wheels. The problem I'm experiencing is the board likes to slow down on leveled and slanted roads. Is it me or does it need tuning? I'm too poor to do much about it if its the board.
hmm sounds like its probably the bearings. if you just switch the bearings out it shouldnt cost more than $20. I'd suggest these www.amazon.com/Bones-Reds-Precision-Skate-Bearings/dp/B000FDRQ1S/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1536823924&sr=8-3&keywords=bones+reds
It's called gravity. Your best bet is bigger wheels and probably new bearings. If your wheels are small the go slower and have more trouble riding over rough ground cracks and rocks.
who ever stole it actually did you a favor because the walmart board is dangerous af, i shatter a kids truck by doing a kickflip in gravel.. if that would have been in another terrain it could have really sucked.. the problem with walmart is the wood is trash but you can get by with it if you must but the dangerous part is the hardware is not quality steel. it is trash metal. pot metal that is prone to shattering, has not been tempered properly, it's like using a $2 sledge hammer from a discount store- it's going to fail because the metal has not been properly tempered, which is what raises the price of a metal tool is how well it has been properly heat tempered to give it strength. you cannot afford to risk your saftey to save $30 on skateboard hardware. parents are not aware of how dangerous it is to their kid for them to try to save a few $$$by going to walmart. if you go to a skate park or spot and someone usually has used hardware for sale eventually if you ask around and most will take pity to your plight, they wont want to see you riding trash trucks if you try to offer them what you can afford.
Super informative for an almost complete beginner like me. I have been watching a ton of your videos the past few weeks since I just recently picked up skating! My Uncle who is big into skating heard that I was interested in picking it up and he gave me a board to start on! Thanks for all the great videos VLSkate!
Awesome, don’t get discouraged from falling as you learn. It’s something every skater (even the vets) deals with. But if you are patient and practice - you can get a lot out of the sport.
@@pat7917 Thanks for the encouragement man! I fell and hurt my hip almost three weeks ago, got back on the board yesterday night and landed my first shove it! It is so rewarding to learn new tricks.
@@Lanman106 Hell yea! I remember my first shuv-it back in the day. That is the trick that opens up the door to all the others! It is probably the most important flip trick because it’s the first trick that makes you realize what it feels like to have the board rotate under you. Once you are comfortable with that sensation - then all the other tricks will follow. Awesome to hear partner, there’s no greater feeling than landing a new trick!
@@pat7917 Thank you! Yeah, it feels like a good first solid trick. If you're catching air, flipping, or spinning the board I would say it's a serious trick. I think the usual thought process is to start with an ollie, but the shove it is so much easier and simple. I thought it would take me much longer. Landed only one clean one though, so I gotta practice it now until it becomes routine. Haven't been able to talk with any skaters in person really, so it's nice to hear from someone online!
Good advice on the wheels! The weight of the skater also comes into play a bit, and I feel like nobody mentions that in the skateboarding community. In roller derby, it's crazy the variety in preference people have about their wheel hardness. At 120 pounds, wheels in the 90s feel to me how I assume something like a 101 feels for a 180 pound person. The best advice I got was if you don't know where to start, pick a range based on the type of skating you do and go low or high in that range according to your weight
Daewon's back trucks are tighter and have bushings in them. He uses two washers in the front trucks, which makes it like the steering on a car. Makes a ton of sense, and riding with loose front trucks has really worked for me.

Dooks riser shock pads. Used the same pair for years and years until the board they were on got stolen.
Skating is the best thing that has ever been put into existence. That's all I have to say.
Honestly, whilst I like loose trucks in terms of steering, I can't help but notice there's a 'speed wobble' going on when going faster. So tight trucks for me it is!
Speed wobbles is how I broke my knee. Havent skated in like 10 years haha

Same but when I improve on skating I'm going to get a better one
the trucks on walmart board can shatter
I love to see people try my board and hearing them complain about how loose my trucks is, and then watch them tic-tac while turning while I surf even around the corners with ease
haven't touched a skate board in 16 years but i still end up watching this.
One size fits all doesn't apply to Skating. Everyone is different.
Probably more true for skateboarding than most other sports out there.
does inside or outside wheel graphics make difference?
fractalife sure
Yeah if you ride graphics in you ride backwards
I thought some wheels arent symmetry, which is graphic in or out make the wheel's tread wide difference
I always skate mine logo out for a while then when I can see the shape is being worn down I will flip them logo in. I skate spitfire formula 4s full conical and ride mostly bowls and transition.
Yes graphics on your wheels helps them to go faster.
Now I am skating only a year by now, but from what I´ve learned so far, here are my experiences: regarding deck size, I started with 8.38 and tried an 8" afterwards, now I am at 8.5
8 was definetely to small for my size 12 feet, when I switched to an 8.5 I felt that I was improving very quickly.
as for wheelsize: I began with very standart 52mm and then tried 55mm, nowadays my goldilocks are 54mm.

Abec is the only one that doesn't matter.
Adidas shelltoes or Superstars are good to skate in..alot of grip 💀
LOL cheap Adidas?? Where do one get those?😅

I live in a (relatively) small town on the edge of a big city. About 10 minutes away from my house, there was a small skate shop. I got a skateboard for around £30 and it’s lasted me almost 6 years, and while it’s worn down, I can still ride it.
Does goofy stance make a difference from regular stance in term of doing certain tricks?
Na i ride goofy just your pefrence
Some parks are pretty racist so you might have stance disadvantages but it can happen to every stance so
Paul Brand thx
Tom Van Loenen he means they automatically think you ride normal so some obstacles are more difficult to do on goofy
Matthew Peniston I notice goofy people tend to do nollie back heels better than regular people.
How does the trucks being loose make ollies easier?
@@sleepingturtle32 when the trucks are tight, you tend to extend your knees more and are less comfortable. It might seem counterintuitive cuz you'll be less stable when you land but being comfortable on "take off" might be more important.
@@mklinger23 hmm. Okay. That my be my problem. Although I’m not sure if my trucks would be considered “tight”.

Used to skate so loose my friends called mine the Deathboard 😂
Too many scooter freaks where I was when I used to skate so needed the added agility to dodge em.
2:00 this clip is the most satisfying thing I’ve ever seen like wow
(My opinion, for me and how I am)
Loose Trucks -
Benefits - helps with landings that aren't perfectly straight as you can quickly steer back.
Down fall - It's a tad harder to set up because you need to be perfectly balanced straight, then set up.
Tight Trucks -
Benefits - Easier to set up because you're really not worried about steering straight, and setting up.

3:55 I got those trucks for my first board!

I'd suggest these
www.amazon.com/Bones-Reds-Precision-Skate-Bearings/dp/B000FDRQ1S/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1536823924&sr=8-3&keywords=bones+reds
It's called gravity. Your best bet is bigger wheels and probably new bearings. If your wheels are small the go slower and have more trouble riding over rough ground cracks and rocks.
Get new bearings
who ever stole it actually did you a favor because the walmart board is dangerous af, i shatter a kids truck by doing a kickflip in gravel.. if that would have been in another terrain it could have really sucked.. the problem with walmart is the wood is trash but you can get by with it if you must but the dangerous part is the hardware is not quality steel. it is trash metal. pot metal that is prone to shattering, has not been tempered properly, it's like using a $2 sledge hammer from a discount store- it's going to fail because the metal has not been properly tempered, which is what raises the price of a metal tool is how well it has been properly heat tempered to give it strength. you cannot afford to risk your saftey to save $30 on skateboard hardware. parents are not aware of how dangerous it is to their kid for them to try to save a few $$$by going to walmart. if you go to a skate park or spot and someone usually has used hardware for sale eventually if you ask around and most will take pity to your plight, they wont want to see you riding trash trucks if you try to offer them what you can afford.

I've always stuck to the same brand and size since my first deck, when I go different I tend to struggle... creature of habbit maybe?
Looking at this video I thought it was going to be about like your stance on the board instead of the skateboard itself
I dont even like skating but I still enjoy these videos man good job
