Jon Stewart on President-elect Trump, hypocrisy in America

  • After Jon Stewart left "The Daily Show" last summer, much of the presidential campaign went on without his unique and satirical point of view. Charlie Rose met with Stewart to discuss his new book about the more than 16 years he spent at the Comedy Central program. Stewart was quick to give his post-election analysis.

      I don't like his opinions or his ideology, but I do think he understands a large group of Americans right now. I think he's honest and believes what he says, even when he was on The Daily Show and making a comedy of it, he was still saying what he believed to be true. For that I respect him, but I think he's plain out wrong in many ways.

      It's funny how people feel like anyone with intelligence "thinks they're above everyone" or they're "elitists". It's OK to realize that other people are smarter than you. Intelligence should not be considered a negative trait.

      This is the point behind politics too. Voting people in who know more than you, who have studied so they can make the right decisions. Unfortunately it's more of a pissing competition nowadays.

    and this is why i hold Jon Stewart in higher respect than Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, or John Oliver*. while those three are pulling their hair out wondering what went wrong, Jon at least tries to look at the situation realistically.
    i mean, to be honest: this is the man who taught us to always be on the alert for bullshit.
    *note: i do still respect these three as humorous intellectuals, i just have hang-ups with each one.

      he isn't being partisan, but there's a bit of dissonance here: Nobody had the choice to vote for "Trump, but without the racist comments, without the sexual harassment, and without the fraud allegations." Anyone who voted for Trump, also voted for these things. They aren't separate, they aren't irrelevant. Those are a part and parcel of who Trump is and how he campaigned. Saying that those parts aren't what people voted for is simply wrong. People voted for him, knowing full well who and what they were supporting.

      Jon Stewart, in case you are still trying to find out, people who voted for Trump is because they wanted to 'protect' and 'preserve' the U.S. Constitution and the sovereignty of this Nation. It is that simple.
      The Globalists have hijacked the Democratic party in a plot to transform America, which would mean the ultimate destruction of the founding principles of this Nation!

      @NERDSAUCE 8 лет назад +50

      +Sharkbiteleft It's very coherent. The left has slowly started to become what it's traditionally stood against: hatred of the other side. Both sides have been at each other's throats since the election.
      Martin Luther King wrote:
      "Time is cluttered with wreckage of communities which surrendered to hatred and violence. For the salvation of our nation or mankind, we must follow another way."
      "Our most bitter opponents we say: "We shall match your capacity to inflict suffering by our capacity to endure suffering. We shall meet your physical force with soul force. Do to us what you will, and we shall continue to love you."
      The Left needs to return to what it once was.

      Well said, one of the few posts in this comment section with some actual substance.
      Sadly, what you wish for probably won't come true anytime soon... just look at all the comments from deaf-blind members of both "sides" in here, democrats and republicans alike... they spout the usual conspiracy theories, comment without even watching the video and listening to what Jon Stewart said, some just come here to say that his opinion "doesn't matter shit" despite it mattering a hell of a lot more than the opinion of any of these random people no one has ever heard of...
      It's just downright sad seeing so many people who seem completely unable to see the world in anything but black and white, and will hate anything and anyone who doesn't share their opinion without question.
      Sad... ironicly, the word that Donald Trump liked to put at the end of his tweets is the perfect one to describe all this.
      I can already see Trumps first State of the Union adress... he comes on stage, looks into the camera, says "Sad.", shrugs and walks off.

      Martin Sage Wouldn't a better outcome be us moving past this 2-party system altogether? It seems like it breeds the very tribalism Jon Stewart talks about in this video. We become too focused on putting down or defeating "the other side", instead of working on solutions that would benefit us all, considering we all have to live on this planet. There are things that a majority of us agree on (reasonable gun control measures, like background checks for example), but nothing gets done because of our broken system of government.
      I'm actually legitimately interested in getting your thoughts on this.

      He and Colbert are THEE most pragmatic, objective, INFORMED, and talented comedians bar none!
      And ideally, that's what you want from an actual politician. (I can think of one but you would just balk at the suggestion) Anyway, I also think John Oliver, Seth Myers and Trevor Noah are nipping at their heels with their insights as well. =)

I'll have to let my black neighbors know that I'm better off than them, since all of us live in Gary, Indiana! I thought it was the fact that I have to put paying off my basic bills from one week to another, because I didn't have money to pay them, or the fact I didn't eat the 1 meal a day that I usually get. Or the fact that when the money is gone, all I have to eat for a week I is Ramen noodles, or may be the fact that I drive a 25 year old vehicle, that when it breaks because I can't pay someone to do it. +Dawknee I find it a bit strange when people such as yourself automatically think Trump supporter = right wing, considering Hillary is to the right of him on quite a few issues. Trump is also not a true Republican, he is an opportunist and was a registered Democrat for most of his life.
      A significant portion of Trump's support was from Bernie supporters and previous Obama voters.
      It's also blatant douchebaggery for you to say "At last. A decent person from the right." implying most are not decent people. I'm a leftist, but this smug and offensive attitude is why Trump won. Most people are very decent, including right-wingers.

    I think Jon Stewart gave a very well-balanced and insightful look at the election about how some people can be hypocritical lumping a demographic like Muslims together with "terrorists" and how other people can be hypocritical by lumping Trump voters together as "racist, misogynist, hateful, evil", etc.
    He's right that people from both sides are guilty of miscommunication and pointing fingers.

      You know what? You're right.
      Here's the problem with being a conservative republican in the modern age: the party has a strong core of racists and it's a lazy person's act to equate the party with being completely FILLED with racists (which I don't believe).
      I actually don't think Trump is truly racist (well, no more so than a 70 year old white guy would be in America, which is to say "mildly, but not 'Klan'"), but I'm DAMN sure he made enough (thinly-veiled) comments about race that the racists came out for him.
      Not all Republicans are racist, but a majority of racists are Republicans - just keeping it real.
      But it's BS that you're being lumped in with them, and I'm truly sorry to hear that.

      dobbins2550, Stewart was standing up for you here. You have to understand that there were a lot of caveats he has to cover as someone who is generally liberal, he has to say things like 'I understand this is difficult for people who this creates a lot of uncertainty for' but his conclusion that he got to was that people say "all people who voted for trump are racist" and that that is WRONG and that a lot of people who voted for Trump did so out of legitimate concerns, and that there is a lot of hypocrisy in liberal circles when it comes to generalizing Trump supporters. He WAS standing up for you and I really encourage you to watch the video and listen to his message again with this in mind.

      Like so many on the left, they are now hollow shells, a perfect representative of what their ideology has become. They used to laugh at fox news, but they are the new propagandists, and their empty headed celebrities from Cher to Madonna run amuck while they all stew in their low information echo chamber of smugness. They no longer have the intellectual or moral high ground, they censor, they lie, freedom of speech is now "harmful", "dangerous speech"..."hate speech". It's become notable most of their outlets closed their comment sections, Hillarys official youtube was locked down tighter than Anita Sarkeesians.
      This is the cycle, the establishment grows old, complacent, and corrupt. My guess it will take at least 8 years before they get better, because they clearly are doubling down on stupid with no sign of changing for the better. Many people who voted Obama voted Trump, no amount of mindless shaming from an exposed lying corporate media shill will stop people from noticing the truth, the left have become the most violent and dishonest side around, it was they who tried to assassinate the republican candidate twice, countless incidents of violence on Trump supporters and vandalism of property, they simply feel entitled to unlimited response due to their unlimited self righteousness, the mindset of terrorist. This is the left which is now constantly making up fake "hate crimes" to force the world to fit their distorted ideology, from smearing poop swastikas, to now faking hate crimes like the costco cake or the hijab pull, to the official inciters project veritas unveiled, the left simply no longer has any limit or shame, and so you deserve to lose.
      The reaction, the raw unrestrained emotion of the losers this election proved they do not have the temperament to lead.
      Hillary in her last act of abandoning her supporters in their moment of grief...proved she was not fit to lead, and that the american people made the right decision.

Trump, myself and others are not cool with folks and most of all "CRIMINALS" coming over to the States and committing "CRIMES". Especially, when it comes to murdering "American Citizens" OF ANY ETHNIC BACKGROUND! Geez!? They act as if THEY HAVE NOT EVEN HEARD A TRUMP SPEECH!!! I imagine they have since they have SOOO much to say about his words/rhetoric etc. IS THAT a racist ideology? NO. IT IS NOT.
      I am a minority. Many of my friends are from minority backgrounds EVEN gay/lesbian/trans. WE ALL SUPPORT TRUMP!!! There are MANY more where we come from!

They are SO FAR CONTROLLED by the MASS MEDIA which is how they make a living, that their minds are so corrupted, they are NO LONGER ABLE to see from other view points BUT what they are spoon fed by the folks signing their checks.

    Speaking as a liberal-minded individual, all I have to say is that, the election is over, and all we can do now is pay attention to his inaugural address and watch closely for the next four years at his plan for this country. We have to give him an actual chance, and I am willing to do that even despite Bannon and the drama involving his son-in-law. It's not like he can deport Muslims and Mexicans overnight or institute slavery. We have checks and balances, and if our president steps over boundaries we can look to Congress to correct him.

      Dre, we just had open enrollment for health insurance at my work a week ago. I have United Healthcare through the state because I qualify earning only $33,000 a year for a family of five. Ive been sick for a year now and get a lung biopsy on Monday the 28th for a growing node. If I lose my Obama care, and have a preexisting condition that the insurance company can refuse me with Trumps original plan, I will die. I'll die no matter what, but by Trumps plan, I'll die in 2017 instead of maybe 2020. I have two teenage boys and a 9year old boy. These people care that I live longer then even I do.

    • @biggold8576

      DreTheBeast I am a liberal minded individual as well but I highly doubt we can depend on congress to keep this fascist in line. The Republicans will see this as an opportunity to pass all their backwards agendas. Donald Trump is a narcissist who loves being the center of attention. He's in this for himself. Not for you, not for me and not even for his voters. He channeled hate, bigotry and racism in order to win. Exactly how Hitler came to power. When you have one party in control of everything there are no checks and balances. It's an Achilles heel in our system that the founding fathers probably never thought about. Democracy is an illusion. I respect your views and opinions but I feel compelled to disagree with you. One more thing, the Republicans support their base and their base is full of racist, hateful people. Don't expect Republicans to do the right thing.

    • @danhaynes446
      @danhaynes446 7 лет назад +12

      +DreTheBeast Yes, we have checks and balances...and it's a Republican president, a Republican congress, a Republican senate and it's going to be extremist Republicans appointing and approving the next supreme court justices.
      Have you seen the obscene and hateful statements and laws coming out of the Congress and Senate lately? They've had a sick and perverted obsession with the sex lives and genitals of consenting adults this is none of their fucking business in the first place. Is that really an organization you can trust to rationally correct extremist behavior?
      The supreme court ruling on Citizens United? Is that really an organization you can trust to rationally correct extremist behavior?
      Obama halted the deportation of kids by executive order, what makes you think Trump won't undo that order? What makes you think that he can't or wont' go farther?
      I guess the real source of frustration and the real reason why people should reject the Trump and the Republican party he represents is because we're having to discuss such issues.It's *ridiculous* that a country that used to do what was right simply because it was the right thing to do now has to hold its collective breath to see if the shitbag that got elected is going to turn out to be Mussolini 2.0 or not. We deserve better than a bigoted idiot so dishonest and so stupid and so psychologically defective that we can't even guess what kind of hateful idiocy he *might* attempt tomorrow.

    I really do respect Jon, but in this I have to respectfully disagree. While a portion of Trump supporters may not be the type to verbalise racist rhetoric, by voting for him, they inadvertently co-signed everything he did that was racist. In an election that was purely based on policy, I think it's totally understandable to vote for someone even if you don't agree with everything they say; it wasn't the case with this one. Trump's entire campaign depended on his furthering of the 'us vs them' mentality, with the 'them' being Mexicans, Muslims etc.
    By contributing to his being elected, you contributed to the validation and emboldening of racist attitudes... one's that were/are very much a part of his 'policies'. So even if you're not the vocal and hateful racist that so many are, you are the type who didn't care about it enough to see that voting for him was voting for that.

    • @jphforex2151
      @jphforex2151 8 лет назад +3

      I watched just to see what Stewart actually said about the election. Stewart - like most self-important celebrities - bashed away at Trump before the election. I watched it as MANY people actually think this guy is relevant. I also monitor ALL social media sites/news outlets/blogs, etc. - just to see what is being said - liberal and/or conservative.
      One of the first questions I ask anyone I come in contact with is; "where do you get your news"? There answer determines a great deal in how I proceed with that person. Stewart is biased left. Sean Hannity is biased right. Yes? Therefore, I gauge myself accordingly. I routinely call out BOTH sides for errors. Too much "Stewart"? Too much liberal claptrap. Too much Hannity? Too much Neocon.
      It is instructive to see what ALL sides are saying. THEN try to root out FACTS. I find Stewart to be lacking of facts - and heavy into one-sided speak. Therefore - just like many conservative "pundits", I eschew his "views".

    • @jphforex2151
      @jphforex2151 8 лет назад +2

      Read what I wrote below to get your answer. I'd stop twisting the word "care" for what I actually wrote - which was that Stewart would be the last person I'd ask for views of anything. If what I wrote was "bashing", then perhaps you need some analysis.

      Even though Stewart might be closer to Bernie in his beliefs, I think he would have supported Hillary because the (very wrong) conventional wisdom was that she was a stronger candidate would wipe the floor with Trump. The fact that all the political comedy shows have steered so far to the left in discourse and the networks that host them were major donors to her campaign makes me believe he would have supported her which is a shame.

      a stupid show on comedy central could not have changed the election you tard. they would have cheated Bernie Sanders anyway, LIKE THEY ALREADY DID! how much influence do you think this guy has? most people who watch him (which isn't actually that many) watch for the lols and cringe when he gets serious about politics or pushing his far-left agenda... he only really sways a small fraction of retarded celebrity-following millennials. he wouldn't have affected the outcomes by 1%. I have almost the opposite politics as Jon and yet I watched his show because it was funny, unlike Trevor Noah's. He doesn't control all his viewers.

      Every single Daily Show has over a million views on RUclips (as a minimum). Artcore103 , only retarded people think that TV doesn't have an influence. Do you honestly think that a $billion a year industry exists if it does nothing? Maybe you should be a host on Comedy Central.
      Anyway, for everyone that thinks Comedy doesn't have influence - just look at Trump. He's an entertainer, and his entire campaign was a joke - yet he swayed the nation.
      The nerds out there know the truth. If you crack a psychology book you'll understand, laughter is a physical representation of your reality shifting. But then again, statistics say that educated people didn't vote for Trump - so I suppose I'm talking to a wall.

NO. IT IS NOT.

      What you guys don't understand is that many states across the country have cultural barriers against advancing the current level of education. Many people are against science because of religious reasons, many are against advancing history classes because they are seen as being propaganda and too focused on things outside of the U.S. Many people are also against higher levels of English and Mathematics because they are seen as non-practical material. A fair amount of places advocate for less developed education then other areas of the country. They are holding the educational system back.
      In Iran for example, their mathematics and science courses are far more advanced and demanding than than high school courses in the U.S.A.
      It's also not that are standards have fallen. It's actually that our standards haven't kept pace with the world's rising standards.

      They are. Other countries around the world are continously improving their education. Many students in other countries are getting education in high school similar to those Americans get by their third year in college. They are studying most of the day and have extremely regimented lives.
      Now, I'm not saying that American kids need to have eight hours of homework. However, I think standard classes need to be improved substantially. All standard classes should be honor level classes, and all advanced placement classes should be honors. Then a new level of education should replace Advanced Placement.
      It is ridiculous that this country needs a federal education standard because some regions refuse to improve their education. Some places actually want to teach creationism and evolution at the same time. Because putting religion in science makes sense *eye roll*. And all those people that are against advanced history because it's "propaganda", "immoral" and "non patriotic" because it is objective and criticizes past and current mistakes of the country- all those people that believe that need to shut up. They need to pass down wisdom, and not destroy it in future generations with ignorance.

      @James Bond The gospel by which we're saved. We're under Paul's ministry today. Therefore we're not under the law of the old testament. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 (KJV)1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.
      And that takes us back to John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV) 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. So it's only by GRACE that we are saved not by works. Jesus did all the work and gave us GRACE (unmerited favor) as long as we have FAITH (believe) in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ for SALVATION (trust in his blood). That's the gospel. Jesus said, Ye must be born again to enter into the kingdom.(accept Jesus as your SAVIOR)

    I am really pleased to see Jon's non-comedic point of view on these questions. He was very articulate and highly intelligent in his responses and I mostly agreed with what he had to say. The one thing I really liked was how he pointed out the hypocrisy of non-Trump voter hate and ignorance in their internal mental monologue that everybody that voted for Trump is a racist or a fill in the blank. That they are embodying and perpetuating hate in their defiance of hate and they are actually being too arrogant and ignorant to realize that they are hypocrites. I have to say that Jon's assessment is the most objective that I have heard out of any celebrity that has voiced their opinion thus far. Totally agree. Obama and Trump are two sides of the "change" coin -- what America REALLY wants (and no one has delivered) is real, meaningful, change that gets rid of the corrupt and bloated and self-serving government we currently have. Sadly, I think Trump will be about as successful at that as Obama has been.

    • @Artcore103
      @Artcore103 8 лет назад +1

      While you're correct that that is what America wants, I'm afraid you still are incapable or unwilling to see that Trump is set to deliver that very thing... not all the way, not completely, but 10x more than Obama did. The guy hasn't even been inaugurated and people are already calling him a failure. Can you remember, and do you realize, that we have NEVER in history judged a president SO much before they were even inaugurated? The media has NEVER focused THIS much on cabinet appointments, EVER!? This cycle is absolutely insane... everyone thinks it's normal to be rushing to judgment like this but it is not, it is unprecedented. People are saying wildly contradictory things. They're guessing at his cabinet before things are even certain and the appointments official. Trumps cabinet will likely give us a good representation of the extent to which he will be ABLE to (not the extent to which he would LIKE to, but be ABLE to... he's a realistic man, one president can not fix washington as much as we would like that to be the case) "drain the swamp". That means that if we see 3/4 of his cabinet turns out to be swamp monsters, guess what? That's better than 100%... that's 25% swamp drainage! Now I happen to believe the numbers will be much better than that, but that is TBD. It's also not just about the numbers, it's about which positions have more power or influence... if some of his top picks are anti-establishment/outsiders (like Bannon) then that gives an even better picture of draining the swamp. People are complaining about his cabinet being insiders, and at the same time complaining about the most outsider appointment EVER, Bannon! It's stupid! Bannon is not a white nationalist, that's just a far-left talking point. Anyone can read Breitbart and see that he is not... he's just an anti-establishment conservative, regular nationalist, who holds the views he does on immigration etc. because he wants to preserve the CULTURE of the United States, not the white race. As someone who lines up very closely with the politics of Breitbart I can assure you that we are not white nationalists (a softer term for white supremacists) but merely nationalists (as opposed to globalists), fiscally conservative, socially libertarian, constitutional originalists, pro-freedom and civil rights (true civil rights, like the 1st and 2nd amendment, not fake rights like which bathroom you can use, or killing unborn babies), and there are plenty of people of other races and backgrounds who agree.
      So if you truly do want a candidate who offers change in the sense of weakening and undermining the corrupt washington establishment of both parties, then please give Trump a chance. If you get your news from mainstream media you will never EVER believe he is succeeding at anything. But if you study alternative sources you will learn that he has already made some big and unprecedented moves in the right direction, and that he already has lobbyists and insiders angry and scared.
      MSM has turned people off to Trump based solely on calling him names that aren't true... racist, sexist, etc. If it weren't for those beliefs, everyone would love his platform that includes a vision and a real plan for ways to reduce the corruption in washington, and help Ameicans both keep more of their earnings, and increase their earnings. Who doesn't want more money? He is by far the more anti-war candidate, everyone wants that. He has always supported the gay community. Really about 80% of everything he stands for should appeal to liberals and progressives, but the media has not allowed you to keep an open mind about him, you've been conditioned to hate him when the majority of what he offers is exactly what you've always wanted.
      So keep an open mind and convince your friends to do the same. Read alternative right-leaning news sites to see if they provide any evidence of some things he's doing right or has followed through on. Trust me, drudge, breitbart, infowars, daily caller, world net daily.... these kinds of sites WILL be critical of Trump if he does anything that goes against the principles they stand for, because unlike the MSM they don't fawn over their candidate and try to cover up for them... they'll give him the benefit of the doubt and not rush to judgment, but when the time comes, they'll tell you where he's failing, and if you can trust them to tell you where he's failing, then you should at least consider what they say he's doing right.

      +Artcore103 that's trumps doing. If your entire campaign was built on "draining the swamp" and liberating the people, the "forgotten man" and appoint the most establishment swampy republicans you can find you're gonna get some shit for it. People are holding him to his word, and he's already not delivering, there's the criticism. It's not like poor trump can't even do anything, I agree he'll be critiqued no matter what that's what being president is like, but the criticisms about his cabinet are legitimate.

    I miss hearing from Jon every night. I love his ability to remain optimistic while covering years of political craziness.

    What is common between Jon and Trump? They are both wrestling fans!

    I'm saying it... John Stewart is the Walter Cronkite of our generation. I would say he is the most trusted man in media, which says a lot considering the huge distrust that has built up with ALL the media. Just frustrates me that with that responsibility and power, he chose to pack his bags and go away. He doesn't owe us anything, but it's just extremely unfortunate in this time where people seem to be yearning for a voice in this darkness.

    Wow... Second time I got to this video because somehow I saw "President John J. Sherriden" form Babylon 5 on the Thumbnail. Lol :-) Anyone else having that, too? ;)
