  • Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard or Primoz Roglic are the main favorites to win the Tour de France 2024. However, all this motivation could go down the drain if they suddenly test positive for doping. Your friend Cycling Highlights brings you what would really happen if Pogacar was caught doping in the 2024 Tour de France, just as it happened with monsters like Lance Armstrong or Bjarne Riis in the past.

    When Team Sky won the Tour, it was obviously questionable. However, the numbers Pogi and Jonas are putting out make Team Sky look like pikers in comparison. This is Pantani level of doping going on today. Doping has always been existed in cycling, but the 90's and what is happening today is 2 or 3 levels up from the occasional steroid taken in the 80's. You have to watch the historical climbing times up the major mountains to know what is going on, which is why the Tour has been avoiding iconic climbs like Alpe-H'Duez. It would be too obvious who doped if they climbed it every year.

    Really hard to get caught in competition these days. Dozens of big performance gains are either not listed at all, or are only on watch lists, other controlled substances are micro dosed and incredibly difficult to detect, and other stuff is banned but not tested for. It's easier than ever, with some kind of budget and doctors that aren't totally incompetent.

    • @christianfibiger3146
      @christianfibiger3146 4 дня назад

      I totally agree, so it is crucial that they often do retesting so see if they can find banned drugs and masking agents in the samples, and if they find any then the riders will get punished. Armstrongs samples from 1999 were also retested from 1999 and they found EPO.

    • @veganpotterthevegan
      @veganpotterthevegan 4 дня назад +1

      Microdosing really works well for not exceeding hormone balance/limits and hematocrit. But you can't take whatever you want in small amounts to avoid detection. The tests are far too sensitive for that. You need to take things that aren't detectable at all in functional doses while keeping your values under threshold limits

      @@veganpotterthevegan Or take other substances to get rid of the traces before testing. I think if doping is widespread this is exactly what is being done. They are drinking something that breaks down the metabolites during the course of the race, and peeing them out before they arrive at the finish. At least, this is *one* of many plausible strategies. The other is cheating your "biological passport" since Day 1. Making it seem like your "baseline" is higher than the average, and keeping it around those higher-than-natural levels for every test after.

    This always goes in 'cycles'. UCI/Grand Tour directors try to keep doping hidden/sweep it under for a while to project a certain image that's working for commercial reasons. Then police and investigation agencies pick up the trails left behind by guys like Piccolo and others who get caught trafficking huge amounts of stuff. UCI/Grand Tours start looking bad because they aren't doing enough to combat the problem so they start 'cracking down' to project a certain image for commercial reasons... etc. etc.. It's an old story. We're in that phase again where someone will get complacent and an undercover operation will find a bunch of big things happening around cycling. Festina-like etc..

    Great video as always:) I have to agree, if a rider wearing the yellow jersey it will be bad because the sponsors dont want to be linked to doping so they pull out of the sport. It is nothing new. Rabobank also pulled out due to doping scandals on the dutch team. So the big question is, how can the sponsors stay even though some riders will get caught by taking illegal drugs? I must agree with Italian doping expert Sandro Donati and say that doping must be criminalized or else we will never get rid of doping. How severe should the penalty be? one year in jail? two years? Then there is the UCI who covers up positive doping tests. Who will control them if not themself? Do you think some riders pay off anti doping labs to cover up positive drug tests?
