Why?
Having lived for several years in a city with a racetrack and observed the crowd's behaviour on race days, I'd have to conclude the whole thing has very little to do with the love of horses and a great deal to do with the love of human ritual.
Yep. I live near Grand Prairie Texas and have done protests and they love the gambling and atmosphere. It's a fun thing to do on weekends.
High school friend of mine had an 8 month old horse being forced into horse racing at a place called Cloverdale racetrack & casino. He (the horse) was pulling away from 3 men yanking him for "training". Her father was one of said men. 2 of them pulled so hard, the horse fell, smashed it's head, & started having seizures. Without hesitation, they shot the horse with a bolt gun like it was nothing, blaming the horse. She came to me crying at school, telling me about this, we both skipped class, I walked with her home, her dad was there & started screaming at her for being weak/loving the horse/more horrific things. Same man drowned 4 kittens in a horse trough & forced her to "dispose" of them. Absolutely. Horrific. What happened to my friend? Years later, she's a tenant of my parent, has two kids. One is 2-3, sweet & kind. She ended up hitting her new born child. 9 weeks old just for crying, giving him a black eye & after telling her off about it while she didn't care, I saw her in that moment & I never saw her again. She was getting violent with her children as she was taught in such a violent family.
Damn
That was painful to read.
Was this in Surrey, BC?
Ive heard "you shouldn't get into breeding if your unwilling to drown a litter"
that's horrific and extremely distressing

Anything humans do kills animals💁🏼♂️
The sad thing is that research has shown whipping horses doesn’t make them go any faster😢
It's probably more of a human psychological thing. Like how people push elevator buttons or crosswalk buttons a million times as if it'll make the machine go faster.
Being whipped in a thick leather jacket is not really being 'whipped' in the weak human context.
The whip signals the horse it's time for the final sprint, long distance runners do not run the first lap as fast as the last lap either.
@@rmac3217 That leather jacket isn't connected to nerves and it has been processed. That's their skin. They're literally being whipped. You can't say it doesn't count just because YOU don't feel hurt when wearing someone else's skin.
@@rmac3217 Not sure what you mean by 'leather jacket', but if you're referring to the horse's skin, research has shown that horse skin has more nerve endings and is thinner overall than human skin. Horses can feel a fly land on them on top of the hair and accurately shake the fly off. You can tell a horse to run faster a myriad of different ways other than beating the crap out of them

It really is. Horses have it so freaking rough. SO MUCH of the normalized stuff with horses is insanely cruel. Horses dying on race tracks really is just the tip of the iceburg.
I worked in dog sled racing and its incredibly ugly and horrific, but so many more horses are impacted by racing. In terms of scale alone horse racing is so much worse. It just APPEARS less rough because its on a manicured multimillion dollar farm.

@@ASMRyouVEGANyet All horse use is abusive. Riding, driving, even those liberty shows people love so much are insanely abusive when you learn how they train it.

It's wild that something dramatic has happened with horse racing on your side of the pond too. I am from Kentucky in America. There was a huge evacuation and investigation that started and may still be going on. I had no Idea the races are this bad. As a Norwegian my main „reference“ for horse racing was always that scene from the old Mary Poppins movie, haha. Thanks Ed for spreading awareness about this horrible practice.
Race horses are put to "work" in the age of 1,5 years and go their first races with only 2 years old...
They never go to pastures with other horses and are locked in horse boxes all day long (except one hour training). Their life is horrific and mostly ending in slaughterhouses.
I worked in dog sled racing. All the dogs live on chains.
But yea. They take the horses out to train, and then stable them for the rest of the time for the most part. They dont want them to burn more energy, get hurt, they dont want to have to screw around having to chase horses around the pasture next time they train, they want them to be available for supplements, and to control exactly what and how much they eat.
Animal racing is about controlling all these little variables. In horse racing its a stable full of horses, in dog sled racing its a field of dogs on chains. It all works the same way.
A few friends of mine own race horses, they all get 24/7 turnout until the months leading up to a race where they go in smaller pens. I remember going on normal hacks with one on her race horse during the off season and he was lovely, ended up adopting him once his career was over.
