It should also be noted that while on Braize, the Heralds share all pain. Any Herald on Braize being tortured, shared their pain with all the other Heralds on Braize. Also, if just one of them breaks...a desolation starts and they all are transported back to Roshar to prepare humanity for it. So not all of them have to tap out on Braize, just a single one. Taln, the man they left by himself, was the only Herald to never break. All the rest broke at some point, and started a Desolation. But not Taln. That's why when he was the only one in Braize, they decided to try and not follow him. However, this meant that Taln was enduring 10x more pain than any other Herald has ever endured, because there was no other Heralds on Braize to share the pain with.
Not to mention, they held off the desolations for hundreds of years at a time at first, then as they started to break, less and less time between desolations. The last ones had 2 years between I think. When it was just Taln by himself, he held it off for 4,500 years.
Just reread the Prelude. Kalak does not convince the other heralds to betray the oath. They all had already decided to do that before he got back. Jezrein explicitly tells him so.
So can we talk about how Taln held off the Fused for 4500 years, and then ran off and tell the humans to prepare. And when Shalash tried to apologize for leaving him, he *said that it was a good thing since now humans had time to develope, pretty much saying that he regrets nothing*
When I read the first few stormlight books I saw the depictions of the harolds as kind of similar soldiers with PTSD who even after their wars are over are tormented and tortured by what they had to do. They went in thinking what they were doing was righteous and noble but realized that what they had signed up for was an eternity of violence and nightmares.
That's one of the things that makes Stormlight so awesome...PTSD, dissociative identity disorder, depression, addiction. The series has so much psychology in it and does a great and realistic job at depicting mental illness.
What makes it so tragic is that they think they will be able to keep Roshar largely free of strife by taking on the burden but what really happens is the Heralds create a cycle of suffering that becomes more and more desperate and intense over time. At least until the Last Desolation, no spoilers, I'm halfway through Words of Radiance right now.
I would love an in depth look at who all the heralds are, and where they have been mentioned so far in the series! I usually understand when a herald is mentioned or shows up, but I can't keep them straight for the life of me.

They aren't "Evil entities", they are the ancestors of the singers/listeners, who have been turned into cognitive shadows by Odium, when they die on Roshar, they get sent back to Braize as a cognitive shadow. They find the heralds, torture them until they break, boom new desolation. They aren't "evil", they think humans are evil since they kinda took over Roshar from the singers.

My favorite thing about this series is how Brandon Sanderson finds interesting ways to bend the rules in Roshar's magic system. I'm thinking of Renarin and his spren, Lift and her stormlight, and Adolin's sharpblade. With that in mind, I have a theory that the heralds will be able to pass on their burden and find 10 new people to be heralds. Likely our current cast of characters.
The best part is that they don't even bend the rules, we just have an incomplete understanding of the rules. It's like magnets, they seem to bend the rules until we gain a deeper understanding of physics.
I've been thinking the same about 10 new heralds. I wonder if Sanderson's plan all along has been to renew the oath pact in some way to save the world, but I don't think it will be a 1 to 1 correspondence. I think he's got something else in mind with fewer heralds or different forces bound by the pact.
I have a feeling that if Dalinar creates a new Oathpact, it will be easier for the Fused and the new Heralds. They won't be tortured on Braize, but maybe to some other planet to live in peace, or an eternal battle perhaps (same conflict, different planet - hopefully without other lives). Although, I don't know that Dalinar will get the chance to create the new Oathpact. Or if he does have the chance, he might not if he can make a deal with the fuzed to coexist on Roshar.

Here is what I'd like to see a video on: I've started Rhythm of War but can't seem to remember what has been revealed about the ancient Parshendi, the listeners, and what events happened to change them into the parshmen. There seems to be two major events that happened thousands of years ago that brought us to where we are now in the story. One was the heralds decision mentioned in this video, and the other was something the listeners did that they were concerned Gavilar was going to undo. How did all the parshmen (except the listeners) get turned into dull form? why?
I would love to to a video on the history of the Parshendi, I’m glad you’re interested! I’ll finish RoW first so I’ve got as much information as possible to work with.
Listeners vs singers. Listeners abandoned all gods, went into hiding, only had work form and mate form for a long time. Singers are the original inhabitants of Roshar, a portion of them were given powers by Odium, they are called the Fused. When a desolation ends and all fused are dead, there are still regular singers on Roshar. A few hundred years or so ago, one of the unmade figured out how to give these regular singers forms of power, so everyone thought this was a desolation, this is known as the false desolation. Something happened to that unmade (got trapped in a sphere), and this did something to all the singers in the world, severed their connection to the rhythms of roshar, now they are all in dull form. The listeners were unaffected by this, and were surprised to discover a bunch of dull form singers with the humans when they met.
It was less than a year between the last two desolations before the nine abandoned the oathpact. 9 heralds abandoned their duty, 9 spren unmade by Odium. Probably not a coincidence.
First thank you for your research on the heralds. I absolutely love love love Brandon Sandersons cosmere collection. I’m secretly in love with Kalladin. Sshh.. don’t tell anybody. Anyways I would like a podcast about how exactly taravangian took over odium. Did he kill odium and take possession of his shards? Or what exactly happened? I must say I’m not at all looking forward to Brandon ending this collection. I think all of his fans need to protest and insist that he continue to write this story for another 30years or so by which time we all will be too old and blind to read lol! Seriously though. There can’t be an ending😢. Thank you for your time and effort u put into your research of the cosmere❤
Thank you for explaining this!! Like you, I was also wondering what the deal was. Why start Way of Kings with this off prelude? Now I get it so thanks!
I just got through the first half of The Way of Kings, so I gotta be careful for Spoilers, but I am going to be back for more videos - thank you for the explanations :)
If anyone hasn’t read the stormlight archive yet I would avoid this video. He said it’s spoiler free but in my opinion this is very spoiler heavy. There’s things in here that are slowly revealed through the series and I really enjoyed learning about them as I read it. Having read the books myself I enjoyed this video though 👍🏻
This is a great summary! I'll agree that it was tough for me to keep the Heralds straight the first read through. The second one made it easier. Glad I watched this though because somehow I thought Rayse was a person not a place lol Hard to keep it all straight, even when I frequent coppermind.
I think this is first mentioned in Oathbringer. If you read all cosmere books you could have puzzled it out when you read the fictiv essays in the shortstory collection arcanum unbounded
Thanks man! Greetings from Australia! I've always been meaning to travel to Belgium and I've had Mauritian friends who tell me how beautiful their home country is so I guess I'll have to add it to the list too! Glad you enjoyed the video :)
But we have figured out who tortured and a bit of how the Heralds are tortured, this was explained by the Stormfather to Dalinar in Oathbringer. I haven't checked to see if anyone else in the comment section has said this...yes, it's not super in depth, but we do know who tortured them and why.
Yeah I'd like to see some more in depth details. While I love the books, I don't have the time to dig into these books in detail anymore. It's hard to find the time to really reread and find the nitty gritty...I missed worldhoppers and references to other magic systems, Getting in detail on stormlight is something I'd very much enjoy.
When (fuck moash) kills Jezrien the prose states that perhaps he is "the greatest human who ever lived." But thats wrong. Taln is the greatest human thats ever lived on roshar
I’d say this is kinda spoilery because this is Oathbringer stuff. Still I love how Taln, poor sweet Taln, was the only Herald never to break. Every other herald had broken apart from Taln. Taln lasted 4500 god damn years of torture, at 10x the pain. So he could’ve lasted 45,000 years theoretically if the other heralds were with him. Wow.
Here's everything you need to know about the Heralds: Taln is love, Taln is life.

What edition of the way of kings is that?!! I want it.
It’s the original UK edition! I haven’t seen it anywhere for years. The UK editions split each book into two volumes now sadly!
@@LostinDiscovery ugh. UK generally always gets the best cover art. This is a fact. Doesn’t matter if it’s books, games, movies.
Would love to have an in depth discussion video of where they are currently in book 4 and the dynamics of them now
How do you have so few subscribers? Just discovered you and loving the content so far.
That’s really kind of you to say, I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos!
Impressive message and motivation much appreciated ❤👑
Thank you mate.
Talenelat'Elin Stonesinew, Herald of War!
Thank you for your time and effort u put into your research of the cosmere❤
i LOVE your voiceeee . Its like an angel
Great video. I’d love to see you do a video on the knights Radiant.
Thank you! I'll add it to my list :)
Just started rhythm of war its fun to watch this video now
DON'T READ COMMENTS IF YOU'RE TRYING TO AVOID SPOILERS. (Might seem obvious but I felt compelled to do a Public Service Announcement anyway!)
Thank you for explaining this!! Like you, I was also wondering what the deal was. Why start Way of Kings with this off prelude? Now I get it so thanks!
Thanks, new to the series.
Of course man, welcome!
This video contains the appropriate amount of Taln love. I approve.
Hell yeah.
Possible Spoilers:
Was the heralds being given their abilities the catalyst that formed the oathpact, or did a bondsmith have to forge the oathpact??
I just got through the first half of The Way of Kings, so I gotta be careful for Spoilers, but I am going to be back for more videos - thank you for the explanations :)
Sweet! Enjoy the rest of the book and no problem :)
Well done mate, though I wish you’d have done a deep dive. Def earned a sub, you have a very pleasing voice.
Thanks man! I’ve done more in-depth videos on the Heralds Nale and Shalash if you’re interested. Many more to come though :)
I didn't even know Braize existed really until I did my research, I knew they went somewhere but didn't understand where! Thanks for commenting!
@@LostinDiscovery omg you were saying BRAIZE. Ok this makes sense. I think Rayse is a person...he's mentioned in the little before chapters I think.
@@Bookborn Rayse is the vessel for the shard of Odium. He was a human, one of the 16 holders of the shards of adonalsium
@@CSPare_CChange Yes, I dunno if you saw the other comments but I heard him saying RAYSE when he was saying BRAIZE so it all worked out haha
@@Bookborn haha yeah I saw, just wanted to let you know u r right that Rayse is a person
Yes q deep dive would be awesome!
I just finished WoK, so this has been super useful! When does the reader learn about Braize though? I don’t think I caught that during my read.
I think this is first mentioned in Oathbringer. If you read all cosmere books you could have puzzled it out when you read the fictiv essays in the shortstory collection arcanum unbounded
Loving your video ( from Brussels mate 'Mauritian living in Belgium) so much i missed
Definitely would love a rehash before the next book in November
I'll see what I can do! :)
What a good video!! I hope to find more easy to listen to stormlight lore from you!!
Thank you!! Plenty on the channel and plenty more to come :)
@@LostinDiscovery I saw and added to my list!! You have a very even tone/volume, much appreciated
Great video
Dude please do the the video u suggested regards the heralds where they are on Roshar etc... keeping track with names changes etc is a nitemare
Absolutely! I've done Shalash and Nale so far if you'd like to check those out :)
The 17th shard has a recap of all the heralds up to the point of RoW.
Can you please Vaatividya the Heralds individually?
Yeah I'd like to see some more in depth details.
While I love the books, I don't have the time to dig into these books in detail anymore. It's hard to find the time to really reread and find the nitty gritty...I missed worldhoppers and references to other magic systems, Getting in detail on stormlight is something I'd very much enjoy.
Definitely plan on making more :) It's hard to invest the time into all the details in these massive series.
I love your videos! Please put subtitles 😁
Heralds are basically said there 5th oath/word/vow and they are immortal because of an oathpact
Very helpful, thank you.
No worries :)
When (fuck moash) kills Jezrien the prose states that perhaps he is "the greatest human who ever lived." But thats wrong. Taln is the greatest human thats ever lived on roshar
I would love a detailed review of the heralds, with spoiler warnings of course.
I've done Shalash and Nale, spoiler warnings included :)
Wow.
Sadly, if the other Heralds were with him, one of them would break and start a desolation. Taln being by himself is what allowed that plan to work.
