Night blood is the coolest most interesting sword I've read about. What other sword could have a 15 minute video made about it? Awesome video, I love it.
Watching your video gave me an idea, since Nightblood drains investiture from whatever it kills and supposedly it drained Odium until it was full, could that mean that Taravodium is less powerful than other shards and that provides a way for him to be defeated, or are shards able to replenish their investiture (idk if that has been explained at some point)
I was also thinking about this, but I remember somewhere in the lore that shards have infinite power, it just always has to be bound by certain things. If the power is indeed infinite, and if there is no limit on the amount of Investiture Nightblood can consume, then Nightblood is either at its maximum capacity now, or it too has infinite Investiture

By then I had forgotten Szeth got a talking sword and what it said to him. But I loved Nightblood and it became one of my favorite characters so when I did a reread of WoR I was pleasantly surprised it was there at the end lol NB and Szeth together are great!
Nightblood reminds me so much of the sword Stormbringer from the Elric of Melnibone Saga. A black, sentient sword that sucks up people’s souls. I recently discovered that Nightblood was inspired by Sanderson’s love for author Michael Moorcock’s writing, so that makes sense ♥️🗡 Edit: Can’t watch this yet, but I’ll be back after I read Warbreaker 😀
"Brandon Sanderson has written an heroic fantasy depending on originality of character and plot. His heroines and heroes are outstanding -- especially Vasher, the Warbreaker, whose special relationship with his sentient sword is both sardonic and sinister. The mysteries of life after death, of identity and destiny, the politics of magic, are unveiled through three-dimensional characters. "Not only has Sanderson drawn a freshly imagined world and its society, he has also given us a plot full of unexpected twists and turns. In subtle prose, notable for its quiet irony, Sanderson tells the story of two sisters and the god they are doomed to marry. Anyone looking for a different and refreshing fantasy novel will be delighted by this exceptional tale of magic, mystery and the politics of divinity. It's fair to say Warbreaker might even take your breath away!" This is a Micheal Moorcock review of Warbringer, I think that's just wholesome considering his use of the sentient sword trope inspired Sanderson a bit here.
@@bendecius4976 “It’s fair to say Warbreaker might even take your breath away.” - I see what he did there 🙃 I ended up loving Warbreaker. It’s one of my favorite Sanderson novels. I just started reading Sanderson’s Skyward series. Sadly, it’s not connected to the Cosmere, but I’m still enjoying it.
Nightblood is so interesting! This also makes me extremely curious about Warbreaker 2/Nightblood and especially Yesteel. Yesteel is the only character(that we know of) that knows how to create weapons of Nightblood’s caliber, and is willing to do so(Vasher wouldn’t). Is he responsible for creating Vivenna’s sword? Why? And does he have anything to do with why they are on Roshar? If he is still alive, he is easily one of the most dangerous people in the Cosmere, due to his knowledge. Definitely could see him working with the Ghostbloods too.
2:11 thereabouts - Have Shashara and Vasher travelled the Cosmere, or just been to Roshar apart from Nalthis? They're Returned and hence they're Connected to Nalthis, no? Like how Kelsier can't leave Scadrial, they can't leave Nalthis.. They must have found some way to do so - maybe a deal with Cultivation. But that deal is most likely not tied to the Nightwatcher's possession of Nightblood - as we know Vasher and Shashara have been to Roshar pre-Nightblood. 🧐 Also 4:07 thereabouts - Nightblood works similar to a Shardblade no? It has to be in a person's body for enough time to consume all of their Investiture. So getting nicked by Nightblood will kill that part of the body, but the rest are still functionable, no?
I don't think it will be used this way, but every fused killed with nightblood would be permanently dead, right? That's one way to turn things around for humanity I suppose.
I might be focusing on a small passing comment in the video, but I am pretty sure Vasher had explained, *spoilers for RoW* maybe in RoW, maybe sooner, that it is easier living in Roshar as a Returned, cause he doesn't need to consume Breaths, cause Stormlight is investiture? As Breaths are investiture on their own, yet limited, and Stormlight is practically limitless, especially after Dalinar learnt how to open the perpendicularity - Vasher can basically have a never-ending supply of Investiture to survive, and that is without mentioning his own powers of suppression of Breath, and the fact he has such a huge amount of it stored that he could consume one each week and still have a buncha to spare.
Something really interesting about Nightblood that you didn't mention is it's capacity to sever bonds. Ishar was about to steal the Nahel bond to the Stormfather from Dalinar, and Szeth stopped it using Nightblood.
I wonder if Nightblood will be sated after this, and simply be an object of great power? What happens when you get the maximum number of breaths? 🤔 hmmmm...
You are wrong. The Dawnshards are thus far, by far, the most powerful and destructive weapons in the Cosmere. They can do more than kill Vessels, they can destroy worlds, such as Ashyn, and possibly even Shards. It was the Dawnshards that defeated Adonalsium itself. Nightblood is absolutely bad ass and is the most powerful weapon any of the cast of the Cosmere books we have met thus far has access too so far, but it cannot compare to the Dawnshards.
It would be very cool if a Dawnshard was involved in its creation but considering Shashara was going to give everybody else the means to create their own 'Nightbloods' that would suggest you wouldn't need something as rare as a Dawnshard. Those are my initial thoughts! (Sorry for the massive run-on sentence)
If you view the Dawnshards, not ad weapons, but primal commands, then yes, it’s probably safe to say that Nightblood is the most destructive weapon out there. Even if it is permanently sated, and never gets hungry for more power, its ability to destroy has likely become unreal. And if it ever gets hungry again…
So is Odium's shard weaker after Nightblood consumed an incredible amount of investiture upon killing him? Mathematically it would seem to be the case. Nightblood max's out in that moment and draws that power directly from Odium so his hunger is finally satiated. This is significant because Taravangian doesn't have a benchmark to see how strong Odium was originally. He could assume the shard is just as powerful as it was considering he only has the power after Nightblood has drained some of it. In the end it may be a negligible amount of investure, but on the flip side it may have also significantly softened Todium without him even realizing it. Could Taravangian unknowingly given the Alethi an advantage in the face of a stunted Shard?
RHYTHM OF WAR SPOILERS Am I the only one who feels bad that Nightblood won't know he destroyed Rayse? That's the literal embodiment of hatred- he deserves to know he destroyed the biggest evil possible! Someone congratulate that sword please!
Wait till u see what our old friend Taravangian will do. I'm sure he'll be even more terrifying than Rayse... Also, shards change people, I think someone in the books said that Rayse was a fine fellow in the past, maybe I'm mistaken but I am sure shards can alter people's character so he may not be THAT evil.
I read this theory on nightblood where he was commanded to "destroy evil". He has no concept of evil, yet he consumes investiture. Leading to the thought that investiture is evil. It was an interesting theory as it would lead on to believe Adolnolisum
Rhythm of War Spoilers: I hope the only reason Nightblood was able to kill Rayse was because Rayse was already "weakened" from the conflict between himself and his Shard. Because otherwise that would make Nightblood a Vessel Slayer, which would be pretty ridiculously OP (not that I'd complain 😅)
Is there a video about the last chapter of Rythym of war 🧐 Really want to hear your thoughts about it I was awed and sad and angry and intrigued all at the same time reading it
The only things more powerful than nightblood are possibly dawnshards, and aethers. But aa far as a weapon you can wield, it's probably the most powerful sword in fantasy history, and will only get stronger and stronger as time goes by. Imagine for a moment if it took out hoid (I know this won't happen but still) hoid is terrified of nightblood. As he damn well should be. Any logical entity should be afraid of nightblood, shards included. Or at least their vessel.
Think it’s in WoR or Oathbringer where it’s said the majority of a shards power is in the spiritual realm so would assume that’s where nightblood essentially “killed” Odium from, for lack of a better word. Could be wrong though open to opinions.
In all fairness, Syl and Maya are spren who can turn into swords. Nightblood is the only real sentient sword that's purely just a sword. So he's favourite by default ;)
Honestly the thing I'm most curious about in the cosmere right now is Vivenna's sword

Loved the video Man! And thank you once again for supporting me and being so cool on Twitter a month ago. My channel just hit 60 subs and I'm enjoying every minute of it. I've got so many cosmere video ideas, I can't even keep up, lol.
Question: How do you add those motion effects to images? The art I use is so static and I'd love to be able to do that.
Thanks for the help and the awesome content!
Thanks man and well done! Keep it up!
The effect on the images is a lot of fiddling with photoshop and doing some real basic animation there.
Looking forward to following your videos :)
Great video as usual, I love that Nightblood has crossed over between worlds. And look at you approaching 5K subscribers! The videos keep getting better, and the new lighting looks great!
Thanks Joe! It was the coolest thing seeing him cross over.
Much appreciated man! Hopefully it continues to grow :)
Just stumbled across your content! Love having these story recaps! Also... I struggle saying Perpendicularities as well hahaha
Hahaha it's a damn tongue twister mate. Glad you enjoy the vids!
@@LostinDiscovery I am so addicted to The Cosmere I see content, I click haha. Did you end up backing the Kickstarter as well?
Is important to note that while Nightblood is made with Awakening, contains also Ruin's Investiture.
I don't recall this. What makes you say that?
@@dig8634 there is WoB about IT.
I wonder want would happen if Nightblood meet Sumarbrander - the talking sword of summer from Magnus Chase. I could only imagine the chemistry between these talking sword would be so interesting. Or perhaps Sumarbrander would probably been destroyed before anything even happen.
Honestly a great part about making this video is hearing about all the talking swords from other fantasy series!
@@LostinDiscovery Craven Edge from Critical Role? It's a black sword and while it is more directly evil, it is kinda reminiscent of Nightblood with its talk of hunger
Your videos are so chill and well edited! Keep it up!
Thank you so much!
I’ve watched almost all of your videos, they’re amazing, I love how chill and enthusiastic you are...I would love to see you go thru the plot of RoW as a whole, feel like you would help me put together a few things that I didn’t even know I didn’t understand. Also would love to hear your thoughts on the Sixth of Dust
Recently did a reread of all the Cosmere books. I read Warbreaker before Stormlight. When I got to the part where Nightblood is first drawn in Oathbringer when all the Skybreakers are sent to kill the criminals. I can't believe how much of that scene I missed the first time around. The effect on all the light and color in the area was so amazingly cool. It made me giddy.
I thought it was interesting when you said that Nightblood inherits the power of what he destroys. Since he was used to kill the vessel of the most powerful Shard, Odium, do you think Nightblood will be even more powerful now?
Your video's are very nice to watch man! I love them!
-SPOILER ALERT-
Also, a moment to appriciate how well written the moment was when Taravanian plunged the sword into Rayse. I really loved how Rayse just died, instead of one big scene where he exploded into a thousand pieces after delivering a good bye speech. Lovedd itttt
Great video. Once again you have illuminated things, important things that I didn’t put together my first read through!! Well done!
Thank you so much! I'm glad I could bring some new things to light.
Love the new set up and will always be excited for more cosmere content
Thank you!
I think the [X] (written below) are slightly more powerful a weapon. Although I'm not sure, I don't really understand those things.
[X] = Dawnshards
I don't think they really count, just like shards of adonalsium don't count.
I refuse to believe that you only have 5k subscribers! Your content quality and your channel seems like it would have 300k! Keep grinding and I know you will get there someday!
I truly hope so! Thank you!
Night blood would be really excited to find himself in Threnody
I like howyou put so much thought in your videos

woah the intro transitions!!
Amazing video as always.
Thanks man!
Yesss awesome vid!
Glad you're enjoying WoT mate!
Thank you!!
You might enjoy a Tim Pratt book called Liar’s Blade. He’s an amazing writer, and loves a good talking sword.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who mismanaged the order I read Sanderson's novels. What a moment that must of been in WoR. I just kind of sat there scratching my head like, 'huh, a talking sword...'
Lmao our boy taravangian. Loved that bit. Keep killing it my guy
Haha, thanks mate!
6:30 that scene alone melted my brain.
I read The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance and then while I was waiting for Oathbringer to come out, I read the rest of the Cosmere available including Warbreaker.
I recently discovered that Nightblood was inspired by Sanderson’s love for author Michael Moorcock’s writing, so that makes sense ♥️🗡
Edit: Can’t watch this yet, but I’ll be back after I read Warbreaker 😀
Oh it's so cool to hear where his influence may have came from. Thanks for the awesome insight!
It's fair to say Warbreaker might even take your breath away!"
This is a Micheal Moorcock review of Warbringer,
I think that's just wholesome considering his use of the sentient sword trope inspired Sanderson a bit here.
@@bendecius4976 “It’s fair to say Warbreaker might even take your breath away.” - I see what he did there 🙃
I ended up loving Warbreaker.
Also 4:07 thereabouts - Nightblood works similar to a Shardblade no? It has to be in a person's body for enough time to consume all of their Investiture. So getting nicked by Nightblood will kill that part of the body, but the rest are still functionable, no?
Just found you, where have you been?!?... binging your videos now!!
I don't think it will be used this way, but every fused killed with nightblood would be permanently dead, right? That's one way to turn things around for humanity I suppose.
Its essentially Elric's Stormbringer and Sauron's One Ring. What could go wrong?
I might be focusing on a small passing comment in the video, but I am pretty sure Vasher had explained,
*spoilers for RoW*
maybe in RoW, maybe sooner, that it is easier living in Roshar as a Returned, cause he doesn't need to consume Breaths, cause Stormlight is investiture?
Been waiting for this vid! By far the funniest thing in Stormlight.
Yes!
Love your videos and theories
Thank you!
The Nightblood reveal was what got me into the Cosmere. Didn't even know it was a thing, I was just reading random Brandon sanderson books
“Hey Brandon, I was just wondering. Exactly how powerful is Nightblood really?”
“Yes. Good question.”
😆
I'm very curious if Nightblood is truly content now? Is it going to be much more chill going into the next book or is it just going to get hungrier?
Yeeeees!! Ive rept nightblood for very long. Finally!
Any thoughts to Nightblood being powered by investiture and a dawnshard of something like "Destroy/consume/etc?"
And if it ever gets hungry again…
nightblood might be one of the most invested non shard entities out there. im kinda betting it ate part of a shard
14:17 forgetting about dawnshards, yes that sounds right
So is Odium's shard weaker after Nightblood consumed an incredible amount of investiture upon killing him? Mathematically it would seem to be the case. Nightblood max's out in that moment and draws that power directly from Odium so his hunger is finally satiated. This is significant because Taravangian doesn't have a benchmark to see how strong Odium was originally. He could assume the shard is just as powerful as it was considering he only has the power after Nightblood has drained some of it. In the end it may be a negligible amount of investure, but on the flip side it may have also significantly softened Todium without him even realizing it. Could Taravangian unknowingly given the Alethi an advantage in the face of a stunted Shard?
RHYTHM OF WAR SPOILERS
Am I the only one who feels bad that Nightblood won't know he destroyed Rayse? That's the literal embodiment of hatred- he deserves to know he destroyed the biggest evil possible! Someone congratulate that sword please!
Wait till u see what our old friend Taravangian will do. I'm sure he'll be even more terrifying than Rayse... Also, shards change people, I think someone in the books said that Rayse was a fine fellow in the past, maybe I'm mistaken but I am sure shards can alter people's character so he may not be THAT evil.
@@cephandrius3679 Rayse was always bad However Ruins vessel was said to very kind.
Rayse is just a vessel. And not a particularly evil one.
If taravangian ever gets his own metal it's going to be really hard to pronounce. taravangianium
*Todium*
Taravangium, easy
I'm guessing it would be the same as Raysium, right? It would be made from the same power.
Coolest scene in the whole cycle.

Destroy evil!! Great video!
Imma start taking a shot for everytime I hear you say Our boy Taravangian😂😂
Nightblood is so cool.
Hey , would you like to destroy some evil? would be a cool way of winning a duel
I read this theory on nightblood where he was commanded to "destroy evil". He has no concept of evil, yet he consumes investiture. Leading to the thought that investiture is evil. It was an interesting theory as it would lead on to believe Adolnolisum
Oh yes THAT moment!!!
It is theoretically possible for a Nalthian to use stormlight as breath ? Perhaps that’s how zahel survives
Rhythm of War Spoilers:
I hope the only reason Nightblood was able to kill Rayse was because Rayse was already "weakened" from the conflict between himself and his Shard. Because otherwise that would make Nightblood a Vessel Slayer, which would be pretty ridiculously OP (not that I'd complain 😅)
Is there a video about the last chapter of Rythym of war 🧐
Really want to hear your thoughts about it I was awed and sad and angry and intrigued all at the same time reading it
I think I might make one on that chapter!
I am so glad you asked, I would LOVE to destroy some evil today.
😎
Did you read alloy of law? Great series
It's on my TBR :)
Oh boy! Here I go destroying evil again!
Ok but is nightblood actually a dawnshard?
Thanks, you never disappoint, wish I had that sword 😝
Thanks very much! I don't! 😆
Think it’s in WoR or Oathbringer where it’s said the majority of a shards power is in the spiritual realm so would assume that’s where nightblood essentially “killed” Odium from, for lack of a better word. Could be wrong though open to opinions.
Could have just read it on CM though.
I think you're right!
Nightblood is the goodest boy
Nightblood isn't our favorite sentient sword. Sylphrena or mayalaran probably come before nightblood
In all fairness, Syl and Maya are spren who can turn into swords. Nightblood is the only real sentient sword that's purely just a sword. So he's favourite by default ;)
Pretty much T.W Raven said!
I think Sanderson has said that Nightblood was not full after killing Raze, but was after the battle at the end of Oathbringer
destroy evil? sounds good to me
Brandon refers to Nightblood as he in his spoiler talks and WoB, so I think it's safe to go with he.
