I love his stormlight series because it has such great examples of creative fantasy. It's not all grim dark or dystopian. The main setting is a bit dystopian because it takes place in a very stony environment with a bunch of racists basically at war to commit genocide, but the magic and descriptions for other locations in the world are wonderful and peak fantasy imo, and the character writing is fantastic and features some truly good hearted people trying to make the world a better place. Like there's one place that sometimes gets referred to called the Purelake, it's a region that's about 1-2 feet underwater at all times and always warm, and the people there are laid back and content. There's one city that's a main location that's built into a mountainside from the peak straight down to water for a major port. It's one of the largest trade hubs in the world and has a massive library with a kindly old king that provides free healthcare to literally everybody that comes to the city.
Stormlight Archive is basically Sanderson intentionally trying to write his version of a modern epic fantasy with many locations, characters, magic, politics, etc., and I think he's doing a great job.

Kelsier’s scars still need work. They need to be a lot more vertical than horizontal as they come from reaching in past sharp edges to grab an object then withdrawing past those same sharp edges again. The only way they would be horizontal is if he were rotating his arm while exposed to sharp edges, though this may be possible at times the vast majority of the scars should be down the length of the forearm. Think of it as plunging your arm down a monsters throat to get to a treasure, you have to reach past those razor sharp teeth with very little clearance available and you’ll catch on them going both in and out.

While I appreciate the slight tweaks to Kelsier's Arm scars, I've always pictured them to be lengthwise along his arms, as the pits of Hathsin require the prisoners to shove their arms into holes lined with sharp rocks that cut deep into the arms as they reach in to harvest the Atium.

I believe that to be more accurate. Imagine a multitude of white veins running down the arm, or a pattern as if cracking a window at a single point, almost but not quite to the point of shattering it. White, thin, long, numerous and cris-crossing.

Vin: The drawing is amazing. You managed to make something like an actual mistcloak work (as opposed to a mistcoat), and I enjoy the obsidian daggers. If I had to nitpick, I'd point out that her hair is significantly shorter for most of book 1, which is what this seems to be based on.
Kelsier: A bunch of other commenters have mentioned that the scars should be more numerous, longer, and more vertical. I won't harp on that. I'd note that descriptions of Kelsier's psychopathic behavior don't begin or end at "he smiles too much." The man is fully capable of justifying any of his murders to himself. I enjoy that he doesn't look TOO young in this, he's ~40. I also like what you did with his smirk.
Kaladin: The dude is, like, 19 in Rosharan years, and ~21 in ours. He absolutely can't grow a great beard, though I do like this take on his face and expression. Like most on Roshar, though, he is significantly, significantly darker-skinned than how you drew him. As Sanderson also mentioned, Kaladin is ~7ft tall, and significantly leaner than the drawing.
Shallan: Honestly, this one was basically perfect. Unlike most depictions I've seen of this character, she actually looks as young as she is in book 1. Were I to mention anything, it would, of course, be her exposed safehand. The exposed hand is essentially equivalent to being topless, a glove is maybe equivalent to extremely skimpy clothing, and the sleeve covering the safehand (which is standard) is a basic feature of the Havah's design.

Shallan, especially at the start of the series, would've found having her safehand concealed only by a glove scandalous, too. In order to suit _Shallan_ 's (😉) sense of propriety, she should be depicted with a sleeve instead of a glove. You basically depicted her with the Vorin equivalent of lingerie, LoL.

It was extremely validating to be like, "Jazza, you got the most cloak wrong" only to have Sanderson agree, then be thinking, "Kelsier's scars aren't that big, there's lots of little ones" only to have Sanderson agree, then be thinking, "Why are you drawing Kal so stocky?" only to have Sanderson agree, then to be like, "Sanderson is so going to call you out on her hand not being covered," only to have that happen immediately, and finally get to Steelheart and think, "I don't have any concerns about this one," only to have Sanderson once again agree. It's probably because I've read the books more recently (I started just over a year ago and have made my way through almost the entire Cosmere), but I'm glad to know that my imaginings of the characters seems to be pretty close to the authors intent.

I never thought Kal or Shallan were Asian looking. Kinda neat to hear. I definitely didn’t imagine either with that ethnic comparison. I’m Korean and thought both were white. Shallan had me imagining a fire haired Scottish woman (without accent of course). Knowing that now, I don’t think his corrections made either look Asian though. Still amazing art though!

@henryward5457 that makes a lot of sense actually! In a world of mostly asians, a European would definitely seem odd! I've been imagining the whole world completely off!

Such a fun video! Love seeing the drawings come together, and hearing Brandon's thoughts about them are a delight! The details that as he says "would be hard because they don't have language to describe it" is also really neat to hear.
Thanks for crediting Alysha at the end - I honestly was thinking it looked like her painting style for final renders, and was concerned that she wasn't getting mentioned.

FAVORITE AUTHOR! Love that you did this collaboration with Brandon! One thing that I really appreciate is that he has described Shallan as looking “Japanese-Irish” as a result of her ethnic background. I appreciate that almost none of the characters are stereotypically “white” like a lot of popular fantasy series. Unique ethnic races created for this series is a compelling part of the dynamics. 😊

I bought Brandon Sanderson's audio books for Mistborn on audible. Absolutely loved it, those first three books were right up my alley, the books after that take place further in the future, different but still really good. The narrator that did the narration for the books is one of my favorites as well (Michael Kramer). Awesome that you got Brandon on here. Your corrections to Vin's cloak is how I imagined the cloak to look. Update to Kel looked good. I haven't read the starlight archive yet, still need to get around to that. Good work.

Kaladin is a bit off just due to the fact that he’s 19 in the first book. You drew him as something of a 30 year old who’s been hitting the gym relentlessly for the past 10 years. He also would’ve been malnourished as a slave and even as a bridgeman. And a more scraggly since it’s described that way a fair few times in the books. Again, most men at age 19 (especially of Asian decent) can’t grow much of a beard.

Sanderson has a huge library and they fall mostly into the same universe (the Cosmere) and it can be daunting to get into. If you want to "start from the beginning," there are guides out there that will walk you through reading order and how they fit together. However, if you're like me and that seems overwhelming, I just picked up the Mistborn trilogy and started there because those books are so good and approachable as far as their world-building and are sort of their own story in the larger Cosmere so you're not facing a wall of literature to start off.
But that's just my experience and really, whatever path you take into The Cosmere, it's a really cool place to be.
