One of the great times in my life which photography has given me.
It’s amazing how if you talk to people before you take pictures; they will open up to you and make the moment even more magical.
John - I just want to thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with all of us. It’s so inspirational to see such a wealth of knowledge, wisdom and passion. It’s incredibly rare to find people on RUclips who share their own thought process rather than talking about gear only. It’s such a pleasure listening to you and your stories, and please let us all know when you’ll publish your books. I’ll be standing and queuing to get one.
I think of you today as I work in my darkroom making prints for my next book about a magic place in the woods.
It's very inspirational to hear this at a time when I have had less to photograph due to the pandemic. Your words make me want to go out and find something to document. I've never heard someone who is more passionate about documentary photography or any photography for that matter. Your videos have had a great influence on me over the years. Even as I type this my camera is sat in the car ready for my journey home just in case I find something on the way back from work. Thank you for sharing your work and inspiring others.
such a lovely story Sir. Take care and stay safe.
Another great story John. This reminded me of a truck stop in Rialto. My dad was a trucker and my older brother and I would sometimes go with him on trips. This was in the early and mid 70s and we were maybe 8 and 9 years-old. We were based on the Central Coast of California and my dad hauled produce. Sometimes he hauled garlic from Blythe to Gilroy. And in my dad's first truck he had no AC and as you probably know, Blythe was very hot in the summer. So imagine after a day of waiting to get loaded in Blythe. We were sweaty and sticky. Pure misery. So we would stop in Rialto at the truck stop for a quick shower and then get a burger, fries and a milkshake. Good times.
4:50 caught me so off guard. That end of his monologue made me cry. Great video.
You made me cry. Good tears of happy. Thank you. Now go shoot pics.
Great story John.....could hear the emotion in your recall of this event.
Thanks Albert. Emotion yes. Tears in the eyes and hard to speak.
Wonderful story love your work Mr Free.
Always learning with you John: Having a camera always ready, help others and print the images. Thanks for sharing.
It's so inspiring to hear someone talk about their craft with such love . I'm just young amateur photographer, taking fotos off every thing around me. You inspire me take as much fotos as it I can to document the live around me. To take more pictures of my parents while they are still with me . Greetings from lithuania.
Amazing story and photos! Thanks for sharing.
Brought tears to my eyes! How wonderful! I originally subscribed because your last name is the same as my maiden name. (If you have relatives in Maryland, we might be related!) And I'm learning photography as well as being an established mixed media artist. I loved the street photography I saw of yours. But it's been awhile since I received a notification of a video. I was really happy to see this one!!
I am of the Tarrytown or Sleepy Hollow N.Y. Free's Strange name. Glad to know you enjoyed my video.
Awesome! Wonderful story John!

THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL JOHN. GOD BLESS
Great story and photos. Thank you for sharing.
Think about what would happen to your life if, you woke up very happy and excited and turned on your brain to concentrate in helpful thought, always asking yourself, "As a dedicated photographer who wishes to make interesting photographs which might serve to educate and entertain the people who see them, I ask myself..."What is the best thing I can do with my camera today?" Every day like Bill Murray in "Groundhog day" (I have seen the film at least 29 times). Ask myself? Can you close your eyes and turn on your brain? Can you think about where you are photographicly in your life. Can you use your aquired knowledge of how photography can serve mankind in a brilliant and visual manner with drama and excitement for all mankind to see and maybe know more because of seeing some photograph which gave the viewer an explanation of some small aspect of how good life can be. Everyday wake up and ask the big question. The question tied to love and devotion and know how photography can have a big impact on lives. What can I do important with my camera today? Look out the window to see the young boy accross the street with a new kite. His father and grandfather are helping the boy assemble the kite. Now run off with your camera and make photos important to many generations of the boys familly and a joyus celebration for yourself with a camera and a heart and a brain and a will to do your best work.
Love John Free 👍
Great story John, thank you for sharing 🤓

Beautiful story John, fantastic photos as always. I love that first wide shot you show us.
I took advantage of all the trucks lined up with a knight of the line and his cowboy hat.
Always a pleasure to follow you.
Dear John, I was literally thinking of you and your work when I got notified that you have a new video and it brought me to tears.
Also, I’m always thinking about our workshop in December 2016 during my 5 months in the States. You have really inspired me to grab that camera and make that photograph. Now I’m even in the progress of making a photo essay about our encounter and my time in California in general.
Thank you so much!
Thank you Rafael. Photography is good for us. To produce valuable things for others to enjoy and value. Always a noble intent, always a valuable product.
You’re amazing. Your message is so profound. Thank you for an uplifting video that’s equally inspiring as it is humbling.
Thank you Garnett. Great moments are waiting for all of us to find and save for others to see in a well made photo which will be here on this planet for everyone to see for ten thousand years to come.

John, thank you again for sharing your love, your joy, your humanity with us. Because of your inspiration, I look for ways to pay things forward. And because of you, my camera is part of my being. Like you say, we don’t need to be a professional. We just need to open our hearts and take time to see.
Thanks Phil. Your message here will serve us all with good advice.

Good day Sir , you have inspired me .... I will not go into my story or photographic journey or ask you to critique any photos ....but I will tell you that YOU , the man that is JOHN FREE makes me want to go out and photograph ......be well Sir .... Live long and Prosper /Photograph ...
You make me very happy.
Amazing!
What a wonderful story. It so cool that you have a stack of photos next to you as you tell the story and don't have to sit in front of a screen.
Thanks Jose. I can have fun traveling through my stack of prints and remembering the great time I had when making them.
Thanks John. My last outing with a camera, I discovered things I didn't know were there, but my biggest problem is I fail to talk to people enough. Gotta keep working on that.
Would love to see more from the trucking series!
Great story!
Through the superhighway from John's front room to mine. Wonderful stuff Thank You John Free.
My pleasure Darren. I hope your front room has lots of photos lying all over the place.
My camera strap pulls me to many wonderful things and events.
I'm new to photography I am studying online, I am practicing and I love it. This is for me only a hobby but still I think what do I want to accomplish with this new activity. Hi Hybrid. I am happy and having a good time making and printing photographs. More videos coming soon. Thanks for the compliment.
The camera couldn't do anything without the man behind it.
You are so right. A wonderful example to us for real, good life. Greatings from germany.
Thank you Fritz. I started my photography in Germany on Christmas day 1969.
@@JohnFreePhtography Oh, I hope you had good experiences in Germany. Maybe one day we can see photos of this. I am very excited about the book that will be published soon. Greetings from Minden.
Great shots Mr. Free, you must have been quite fast to take the shot at 4:09 to get her climbing up! I would have never thought to include the man’s hand with cigarette at 4:11 your compositional cleverness is fantastic!
Thank you Daxton. I make photos for others to look at. I need all the important details which might provide enough visual information to help tell the story in my photo.
RIP John
Great Phots, I would love to have that book? when are you planning to release it? and do you have a place to place a pre-order? good luck
My book will be finished and ready early next year.

Wonderful story John! Namaste from India🙏🏻, wonder if you ever visited my country... Please share pictures if you did🙏🏻
Yes Namaste. I visited India several years ago. One of the greatest trips photography has given me. Wonderful people.
Hi, John. Enjoyed this video. Do you use a yellow filter on your F3?
Yes. Medium yellow.
Thank you!
In today's time (2021) I find people take it offensively if a Stranger tries to approach them, little alone pointing a Camera at them.. Much different times than the 70's, 80's..
.....♥
Thats how human beeings should be every time.
I love your photos, but I feel the problem is that those times have gone.
Maybe those old times are coming back. Thank you for your nice comment.
A magic moment is time and space. Heart warming.
I’d love to see you work in the darkroom. Do you still print your own work
Check out my video “Inside John Free’s darkroom...
@@JohnFreePhtography I did ! I saw it soon after I posted. Thanks!
Anyone could do what I did with my camera and heart.
Did you chip in any money?
