    This summer I had the honor of getting a private photography lesson with John Free. John is one of the great living street photographers of our generation. Steeped in the tradition of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank and W. Eugene Smith, Free takes the precedent set by these fine photographers and applies it to the modern world.
    This is my lesson with John Free.

    It's not only a photography lesson video but the way it was filmed, it makes a great tribute to John Free as well. And look: no fancy camera strap, no fancy new camera, no fancy lenses but this guy shoots better photos than 99% of us

    • @andreik3096
      @andreik3096 5 лет назад +4

      may be he just shoots 99% *more* than you, that's the 1st thing to change if you want to match him (which is *not* that hard, after 20 yrs of doing it every day :-))

      @@sexysilversurfer I don't understand either. With manual focus you have to use your left hand. And me and my dad never used the lens hoods on the Nikon manual lenses (mostly pre-Ai) because there's no quality difference with lenshood.

    Awesome video Ted. “the brain doesn’t want you to be a photographer, it wants you to be schmuck walking down the street.” I don't want to be a schmuck but I'm left wondering if I have the ability to be fearless like John? It's time to figure that out I guess.

      Didn't realized how much courage it took to become a great photographer.

    • @noyarttt
      @noyarttt 7 лет назад

      I'm with you on this one, You have to be you, be yourself. but I would also say that, being you doesn't mean that you cant develop and become another version of you, that is better and stronger. Sometimes damaging yourself, or coming out from the shell is exactly what we need to do for becoming our better selfs. :)
      This video is really inspiring. I often shoot without thinking, without giving my shoots purpose, that in return gives me kind of boring shoot. I need to stop that, I think it will be more interesting if the shot has a purpose, a feeling. :)

    He sounds like a preacher fired up in church! Very passionate and animated about his work. I'm from Ireland too and if he took photos on a beach like that nowadays it wouldn't be long before his camera would be in the sea......such is life in the modern world unfortunately. I love the freestyle (no pun intended but I do like what I did there) of his photos.......I could never be that good because I try too hard with composition and control.....I'd never think to cut a person in half.....but I'm going to try that soon. Thanks for introducing me to John Free :)

  • @SebastianTramsen
    @SebastianTramsen 9 лет назад +1

    really hectic video. most of the things he started talking about got cut off by himself or the video editing. It is more like he wanted you to push to start your own thinking process but there was nothing too special in what he actually said. so it is a bit confusing. also you get the impression he did the photography because he had to for the video, what really doesnt fit together with his own principles of shooting. though I have to admit one or two shots were beautiful.
    i really really recommend watching all the videos on his own youtube channel. this video by Ted was more like a abstract of what content you will find on that channel. and in that point it failed because it is not possible to pack aaaall the information in even less video minutes. sorry for the harsh criticism. you got enough positive comments :D
    still jealoues of you meeting John. he is a bit of a crazy man hehe ...

  • @Nonduality
    @Nonduality 7 лет назад

    What does he mean by "easy shots?" Clearly, we see him standing on the beach and taking pictures of a guy in a wheel chair. Looks easy. But what is the difficult part? Once that is known then it can be pursued. It involves the meeting of the scene with something essential about yourself. I spent decades on Santa Monica beach and ran miles on it going underneath the cool, dark pier hinting of danger in its shadows. You have to look in those shadows to know yourself. You have to know what you're looking for in a scene. You're looking for yourself, really. You're looking at and into and through the shadows. Thus every picture turns out to be a self-portrait. It has to be. Anything else is an "easy shot."

    Intense, to the point, and keeping to the basics, not the camera basics, but to the man standing behind it.
    There are wonderful lessons here:
    - "What can you give photography, what can you give to yourself?" (Photography is about you and who you are).
    - "Adding authenticity." (PoV is important, it's yours).
    - "You don't want to be misunderstood!" - "What's the idea behind the picture? - "Imagine what the viewer is going to see." - "Think about your intent."
    - "Train your brain, free it from the false beliefs" (from what he lazily commands you or wants you to avoid).
    Amazing video Ted. Well-chosen soundtrack "True Radiance by Baby Brainiac". It guides us toward the exploration that follows. You are rolling, we are moving on, and learning from it.
    Say thanks to Mr. John Free from all of us. He puts into words what we learn of life, of us, through photography.

    I love the verve and enthusiasm John shows when talking about making pictures, it's very reminiscent of Joel Meyrowitz in its passion and honesty. 6:00 "I saw him (Robert Frank) in a gallery, went to look at his work yo see how good his prints were and there he was. No one knew him he was an old man... He comes out with his wife I go up, 'sorry Robert I got to take your picture' and I said 'Robert thank you for being there, I teach photography at UCLA and you're in my pocket in every class' he came over and game me a hug, never said a word" Don't know why, has John told this I felt something, happy and sad at the said time, what a magnificent story

    Very well done film; the subject, the cinematography, the music all combine so masterfully here with John's passion and forceful personality.

    Possibly the most absorbing video regarding photography I've ever watched. Brilliant. John Free, what a guy.

    An amazing video. I have a quick question, John mentions three photographers as his top 3 but I can't manage to catch their names. Could somebody let me know who they are? I'd love to research and study their photography as well!

    Great video - love the use of black and white and the whole production and editing.
    When I watched it I thought it was pretty severely lacking in content - John Free doesn't really say or do very much, it hardly seems like a lesson. But after a day's reflection I'm constantly mulling over
    the image of John talking about making a difference with your photos, about your brain wanting you to be a schmuck and walk down the street like everyone else [that is a great description of the innate desire to conform, never thought of it that way!]. And above all his intensity. I'm going to watch some more of this guy, have subscribed to his channel...

    Yet another inspirational video. Really liked Johns story about his kid making a photo book at the age of 5. Ive always struggled with writing about photographs but its something I crave regularly My mind seems to go blank as soon as I pick up a pen! Any advice?

    He's a little on the manic and didactic side, but that is the charm of John Free. Have to take him as a package deal.

    Great video Ted, congratulations!
    Mr Free definitely is a character! He seems to ramble on, spreading random quotes and wisdom, but a lot of what he says definitely makes sense.
    I like his remark about style, but I'm afraid that in our world today, recognizability is key if you want be become successful. Even many of the big Magnum photographers seem to be stuck into a certain style. On the other hand I believe that for an honest artist who is not afraid of exposing who he/she is, style and personality go hand in hand, and one is the externalisation of the other.

    This video was a real pleasure! In my opinion one of the best photoblog available today, Ted Forbes, and one great street photographer and teacher/mentor, John Free. I had the opportunity to do a one week workshop with John, a few years ago. This few days still impact my photography today, I often think about John while wandering the streets with my camera, every time I crop a picture, I can hear John telling me that I'm cheating, that it should get it right IN the camera! (as a result I crop less and more importantly, I try to get it right in the camera). If that wasn't enough, these few days were a lot of fun. Great video!

    Oh my goodness I have just now seen this for the first time being pointed here from the "behind the scenes" video. I have looked at John for so many years I forget lol A master I agree Talk about heart and vision and enthusiasm in the truest meaning of the word. This video should be compulsory viewing for anyone serious about street or really any kind of documentary photography A fine tribute to a master and decent heart driven human being. Well done and thinling now about it Is it perhaps what call a "timely time" for a re-release or reminder Something This is needed now 👏👏👏

    Really good video, loved his idea to make it difficult, if it's too easy you're not doing it right.

    Nice video! I love his straight talk. I used to live next to Santa Monica pier, back in the days I was a grad student at UCLA...I was too busy to be a photographer then, but it is fun to see this lesson in a place and context that I am very familiar with.

    Great video, Ted! An entertaining watch. I'd be interested in another video to hear your thoughts on the experience and maybe expand on some things John said with your own opinions. Looking forward to more content from you, as always, either way!
