The innocence in her voice makes me want to wrap her in a blanket and protect her from all the evils in the world.
We need more beautiful songs like this, sung 100% in the native language. I love the Estonian language.
estonia has sent some great songs of the years but this is istill my favorite
That’s obvious
Is Estonian like Finnish
@@jorgeeusebio8738 they're sister languages so yes to a degree
@@jorgeeusebio8738 They don't understand each other though come frome the same family
One of those songs that outlive the contest.... what a beautiful voice she has....
The keyboard guy is rocking it in the background. :D
Probably thank to him they got 5th place :)
Glen Pilvre, now known as a tech guru.
He was also one of the composers/arrangers.
I remember listening to the 1996 contest on my radio when I was at university (I didn't own a TV during my final year at uni). I heard this song and I thought it was magnificent. I still think it's magnificent even now!
I’m from Finland and I love when people sing in Estonian.
Koska se kuulusta suomalaiselta vähen? ;)
@@maxxyporky why all of yall finnish people think that this language is similar tf.. no one in estonia thinks that way
@@nkbkldjdlsbr7219 Well I am an Estonian and I do think so. There are definitely similarities, but I guess how similar they sound is subjective, depends on your ear.
@@ontophantom8668 they might sound similar but actually they are not - “coming from a person who speaks both languages”
@@nkbkldjdlsbr7219 I speak both of them too and have a philology degree.
I think we are actually agreeing that they may sound similar (and grammar and vocabulary too), but of course they're two different languages, you don't mutually understand them without learning them.
Like I said, it's subjective, all I didn't like was the "no one in Estonia" comment.
She has the voice of an angel
Still love this song in 2020
And in 2021😜😜😜😜
and 2022
and 2023
And in 2024
Still one of the best.
Love the Finnish language, but Estonian is even netter.
So this is how it feels like when people hear Finnish song and don't understand a word, lol. I'm a Finn, btw.
Definitely a legendary song that's in the playlists of many Estonians to this day.
So nice memories. This was my big favourite of the ESC 1996. A song full of optimism and good feelings. Especially charismatic Maarja was a big plus.
I was a little bit disappointed when they only were placed 5th but it was a big success for Estonia.
With love from Austria 🇦🇹
Back when people really knew how to sing, love this song! Greetings from Portugal to Estonia.
@@user-xn2yz7wu3c I like the beat of this one though.
Back when it wasnt political because 2022 Ukraine song sucked in my opinion
@@eduardpeeterlemmingyou couldn't be more wrong than that
Eurovision has always been political
Remember the time when Lebanon was banned from joining the contest in 2005 because of their political relationship with Israel
Or when Greece withdrew from the contest in 1975 because they didn't like Turkey joining Eurovision ( political reasons)
or the controversy with Israel's entry in 1983 and Germany's in 1999 ?
This song just brings me out in a huge smile and such a good feeling. One of the ultimate feel good songs!
Tosi mahtava laulu.paras viron viisulaulu. Vielä viron kielellä laulettu. Waaau.😍🤗❤💜💚💛💙💖💖
Juu se oli hyvä piisi..
This is a superb entry from Estonia! still love it.
One of my favourite Eurovision songs.
One of the best ESC entries ever, I'd dare to say!
I love this song so much, one of my all time fav eurovision songs!!!
Beautiful song, one of my favourites. 12 points from UK 🇬🇧
. My favourite Eurovision song. Literally "Sound of Necklace". Brilliantly the music and backing singer don't overwhelm the beauty of this song. I think it came about 5th and that is without any hamster wheels or flames of fire
The best song of 1996 and so nice of the singer to bring her grandad on stage with her
Its not her granddad?
I love the Amish guy that's rocking the keyboard
Such a lovely entry!
Beautifull song, 12 points from Spain
After all those years still in love with this song. 1996 was a strong year, this entry was definitely one of the best. Beautiful song, great performance and a lovely language. Well done Estonia, regards from Belgium
My ALL TIME favorite!
Sound of necklace
You know when I am satisfied
Then I have the whole world in my hands
And I can hold the wind
My soul is in storm
When I can't kiss you
If in the moment, I'm hurt
I only want to think about you
Then I'm not asking more
Than your eyes can tell me
I'll make a necklace of amber for you
And I'll put my voice in it
To sing a song
When I'm far away
Don't worry about me
When I lose you of sight
I'll find you, because of your pearl necklace
The voice of waves and clouds
Calls me from far away
When I'm sad and crying
I wish you'd come to me
The necklace around your neck is wet
If you leave me, I'll take the necklace from you
And its colour will fade
You know when I am satisfied
Then I have the whole world in my hands
And I can hold the wind
My soul is in storm
When I can't kiss you
When I'm sad and crying
I wish that you could run to me
The necklace around your neck is wet
If you leave me, I'll take the necklace from you
And its colour will fade
If you leave me, I'll take the necklace from you
And its colour will fade
Here is the translation of the song I found on a website :)
AAhh thank you so much from the UK..still enjoy the song...and to know the words..touching.
Thank you I love this song and i don't know what they are saying
@@esterherschkovich5002 Indeed!
I loved the 1996 Eurovision. Estonia Norway and Ireland were great. Greetings from Scotland 🏴
The keyboard guy is the first thing that you think off when looking back at Estonia 1996.
It indeed is😂
the best from song estonia love from england
Wonderful music and language Mesmerising
Beautiful language :-)
This Song makes me so happy
Even in 2020, wonderful, thank you so much.
Also next year - 1997 by Maarja-Liis Ilus - Keelatud maa - was amazing.
Lovely melody, singing from the heart.
Cream of the crop from my favorite country in Eurovision ❤❤❤
This song will live forever in my heart ❤️ 🇪🇪
Twelve points from Finland. 🇫🇮🇪🇪
I just love this song even if i do not understand all the words...beautiful :)
i Just love this song. Top 5 ever ....
Man, I wish I could’ve experienced the late 1990s. I feel like 1995-1999 Western/Northern Europe was probably one of the best times to be alive in all of human history..
Sõnad:
Tead millal olen rahul
soovin, mu juurde rutta
kee su kaelas on märg
Juhtub, et mind kui jätad
kee sult võtan siis tuhmub selle värv
Tead millal olen rahul...
Kui olen kurb ja nutan...
Juhtub, et mind kui jätad
kee sult võtan siis tuhmub selle värv.
Love this song even after 26 years, I don´t understand a word , but it doens`t matter
Обожаю его! Он дал мне стиль.
Ihana; so lovely 🌟⭐
Cant understand a word but hey so what, it's great , love it.
Wow she was only 15 here. Looks older and that is definitely a compliment.
Wait so the conductor of that was the guy who did Leto Svet. Well R.I.P. Tarmo (the conductor)
Beautiful!
He has an amazing voice as well as her! They are both fantastic
supergood. I love it.
Love it
tämä on minu lemmik edelleen. super coood 10 ++++
Tää on upea kappale!! ❤️❤️💪
Super
I also like to add to this language conversation that even though Finnish and Estonian are close relatives as a Finn I can't really understand ANY Estonian. It sounds similar but I really can't make any sense of the language.
The lyrics has pretty little sense anyway.
Even I don't understand what they are singing I like Lyrics and composition, Estonia never made a good ESC since this one. Best performance ever Estonia!

Fun Fact:
When asked in an interview in 2005, Ivo Linna, the male singer, wanted to beat John Terry, his favourite footballer He had been practicing football since he was 15, and was finally admitted into the Estonian national football team on 17th June 1996. His first match was against England, whose captain was John Terry at the time. Unfortunately, John suffered from a knee injury that match and could not play. Moreover, Estonia lost the match. Things only went worse as John failed to recover and was replaced by Sol Campbell, meaning Ivo could not meet him anymore. As a result, he gave up his football career in the spring of 1997 and returned to his music career. He still felt disappointed until now.
Well that's not really fun 😟
Dulce y tierna canción¡
true melody in this piece of art
La mejor de Estonia, con un ritmo apasionante, un cantante experimentado que enseña a una inexperta con mucho talento, un canto a la vida y a la felicidad. Calificación: 9,25/10
As a Swedish person (of 1/4 Finnish descent) being used to hear Finnish every now and then, thinks Estonian sounds like a softer and more friendly version of Finnish.
A very good description 😄 Greetings from Finland! PS. The song's awesome, one of the best Estonia has sent to the contest ✌️
And one of the most enigmatic too...
0:12 Can't believe that guy was part of that weird trio in 2008.
Also RIP to him.
Aastakümneid hiljem uuesti kuulates... - vau! milline häälte kooslus oli👌
Super tots
It's true that Estonian and Finnish are closely related but neither of these languages is CLOSELY related to Hungarian which, despite also being a Finno-Ugric language, bears almost no resemblance to them whatsoever.
I speak estonian and finnish and i do not anderstand hungarian at all
It's a common misconception. They do have things in common in terms of grammar and structure but there are very few words in common. I can only think of 'water' which is vesi in Finnish and víz in Hungarian.
I think it is quite obvious why. Hungarian is Ugric language, while Estonian and Finnish are Finnic languages. It is like comparing Hindi to English.. both might be relatives in a Indo-European language family, but they are very distant relatives.
Still my favourite💙
Cha cha cha 🇫🇮
A bop frfr
To me this is the most beautiful song EVER! Does anybody know their official FB page?
Väga hea Laul. Armastan Eesti Türgile.
Estonia showed Finland how to do Eurovision
SUPER❤ ÄITAH
She did the following year with Forbidden land.
Estonia's early entries are like a glimpse into what Finland could have been if their delegation wasn't so incompetent
What? 😂
Maarja-Liis was only 15 years old then ... 😊
3:12 the ending on a consonant is quite unexpected
And a dragged one at that. Very odd.
estonian is just a cuter rounder version of finnish
Ce pays de dieux remonte dans mon estime.
nice shot at 2:21
Love this language! Nice song, I'd prefer the female singer to sing solo, though!

Check out her entry from the year after.
She was only 15 years old while performing this

She was 16 back then. Impressive.
May..be...Ivo Linna (male part) as older and more experienced was LIGHT YEARS away. You can feel it instantly if you have any ears...
it should had won, at least ended top 3.
top 5
margus kiis Yes it ended 5th. I will call it underrated!
It was the start of Estonia's golden age (1996-2002)
Wow didn't know Tarmo Leinatamm conducted this. He was one of the singers for the dreadful Leto Svet.
He was actually quite good musician and conducter. Leto Svet was more meant to show to our broadcaster that eurovision NFs needed a revamp.. up until Leeto Svet we had sent half decent but still quite weak songs. But Leto Svet was bad enough to show that our NF needed to change and in the end this change has been for a better :)
К сожалению, ничего не понимаю, но звучит красиво.
12 - estonia (if you could have joint winners I'd have had it this year - Maarja and Ivo *just* edge Eimear's efforts)
10 - ireland
8 - portugal (the top three practically impossible to seperate and miles better than rest of the songs this year IMO)
7 - norway
6 - finland
5 - united kingdom (This song did really well off the back of Eurovision , but I thought there were much better songs , and especially performances on the night)
4 - sweden
3 - turkey
2 - austria
1 - belgium
I'd have given Germany 8 points if they had not inexplicably failed to qualify this year - a very interesting entry which the juries hated.
Wrong video but I'll still leave this here...

Wauu👍🇮🇱🇫🇮🇦🇽🇬🇷🇺🇸🇦🇷🇹🇻
She looks like she's 27, but is 15.
Estonian is closely related to Finnish and Hungarian.
I do speak estonian and finnish put i do not anderstand hungarian ;)

Karsastaa naislaulaja, tuttu juttu kun itse 2 kertaa lapsena silmät samasta syystä leikkattu.
i wonder how would this song do in "MODERN" eurovision contest 😀 .... i mean like only singing and no dancers or fire or feathers or men in dresses or woke or lgbtetc theme ....
So overrated
They sing beautifull but the song is just ok
Not bad, just ok
@Rasmussen the great believe me, I really love the Estonian language, and I love most of the 90's Estonians entries like 1993, 1994, 1997 and 1999, but not this song specifically
@Rasmussen the great ok I take it back, this is really good actually
i will probably get a lot of dislikes, but imo, this is soooooooooo immensely bad that it gets good in the end! the girl's voice is truly wonderful, but all the rest is just awful. and who dressed ivo? lol!
Hey it was 1996. After living under the Soviet clutches, there was no money to throw at clothes.
