  • A myofascial trigger point is a hyper-irritable spot, usually within a taut band of a muscle. Trigger points are painful when you push on them and tend to refer pain to another location. They can, also, alter the motor function of a muscle and wreak havoc on biomechanics. Tim Sawyer, PT takes you on a guided tour of trigger points that cause shoulder pain which include the subscapularis, pectoralis minor, infraspinatus, teres minor, scalene, rhomboid, trapezius, supraspinatus and deltoid muscles. Grab a Theracane self massage tool and follow along. If you don't have a Theracane, we have another video using a lacrosse ball, tennis ball or massage ball. Follow those up by doing our shoulder stretching videos. (see below for links)
In our office, we use manual therapy, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, class IV laser therapy, spray and stretch and deep relaxation techniques to address the trigger points.
Biomechanics including exercise modification, ergonomics, sleep positioning, automobile seat positioning can be necessary when approaching myofascial pain syndrome. There are times when this video and the others will be enough but when the trigger points have been there for a long time, is when multiple modalities must be employed.
The best of those modalities is ESWT (extracorporeal shockwave therapy). ESWT has been proven to help myofascial trigger points, scar tissue, tissue regeneration and more..

Wow what great advice .. I’ve tried to get my TP out for three years but couldn’t do it cause I just kept jamming into it and not using heat after. Just did the tutorial and I can feel it moving away….. finally relief…. Jesus Christ these are the most disabling things it was going into my jaw…..

Thank you for this video. I have a TheraCane which I use on my upper neck and shoulders. I also have a deteriorating shoulder and this video will help it. I appreciate your knowledge in how to use it correctly.

I found the the one inside my shoulder blade that helps with shoulder pain, used this to for 30 years, Belly Breathing also releases natural chemical that relaxes muscles (similar to having a big dinner and feeling tired after) also Bio feed back and learned all abut this tool from great woman. Also muscle memory that when I was answering the phone my back was acting like it was lifting a bag of cement. also I found harder you work that trigger point the faster it breaks down which take a few weeks. my Qualifications, 14 ortho surgeries, multiple shoulder surgeries both, Scoliosis, stenosis disc degeneration and multiple bulge discs. Oh the Rhomboid trigger point did release my shoulder pain in A/C joint are. Like your Videos

So how do you do you know if it’s a trigger point?? I don’t feel any bumps or lumps anywhere but I do have tender spots. I push into those spots with the Thera and feel the slight pain but it does improve it😊

Great question! With a trigger point, the pain spreads out or radiates into a different area. Even if you don't have a trigge point and just have a sore muscle, the video will be helpful
