  • This time lets talk about cheap and easy arcade repairs. At some point all arcade cabinets will need a monitor replacement. Finding a real arcade monitor might be pretty complicated, so the best solution is to use any suitable PC monitor through VGA connector. I will tell you about my experience with two of our recent arcades.
For our projects we used RGB/CGA/EGA/YUV to Dual VGA HD Video Converter Adapter Board. It works with all Jamma boards and MAME systems.

Good work, although I would suggest fixing CRTs whenever possible and replacing with LCD as absolutely necessary. Totally different visual aesthetic and input lag, etc.

I fully agree with you, we don’t throw away old CRT monitors. When our knowledge will grow, we may fix them.

You said perfect when there is no way a PC monitor is perfect like an actual arcade monitor.

when making modern arcade machine, we found while it was great to have lightweight for transportation means, we ended up searching for heavier components (CRT) just for it to be glued on the floor when being abused (played as supposed to :D) and rumbeled.

also, for the CRT moniotr, it was super simple to hardwire it to show in mirror, so we created a gread distance effect for comfy viewing as with some arcades back then did.

I am like a broken record, but if you go with flat screen replacement explore using CRT shaders (look especially good on 4K) and run-ahead lag reduction (thru Retroarch). If you refuse to go the emulation route I guess these aren't options.

Thanks for the video - much appreciated. I am working on my own project now and am getting an error when I plug in monitor to the VGA connector on the adapter. This is the error message - "the current input timing is not supported by the monitor display". Any ideas on how to fix it?

Where have you bought the converter?
I have 3 of those boards and none of them work. Always sync problems

Great you saved the cabinet. What was wrong with the Hantarex Chassis ?

Fully rotten, it may be saved, but we tested it and it’s a big project. I can make holes in the metal with my finger.

Terrible idea! Why would anyone go crazy LCD for retro gaming? 🤦🏽‍♂️

Man those viewing angles are terrible on that LCD, I know that's typical of LCD though, hope you find a CRT for it to make it decent again, LCD is pretty much useless for gaming on, especially retro games, too much lag, motion blur, terrible blacks, horrible colors and so on, Sony has a really nice 32" plasma EDTV that looks fantastic with 240p/480p, much better blacks/motion clarity than LCD, it also has very similar colors to CRT thanks to using the same type of phosphors CRT does, almost zero input lag too, they are kind of a well-kept secret as so few people know or mention them for retro gaming, great cheap alternative to CRT, 32" is a nice size too.
