      I had a recent death with a Hanatrex monitor in my Arkanoid cocktail machine. Every time upon turning it on, the horizontal sync was off, causing a very curved, constantly shaking, double image. You could always fix it by adjusting one of the knobs on the chassis, but it would return in about 45 minutes, or whenever it was turned on again. One day when I was adjusting the picture, the picture slowly shrunk until nothing was left and it has yet to come back. It was sad to actually watch it die. But on top of those issues, the chassis was corroded in certain areas, likely from leaky capacitors, and there was pretty bad permanent burn in of the Arkanoid title screen. I will certainly miss it, but I'll probably get the same converter used in this video and try using a CRT PC monitor.

    way to go man! I'm going to do this same thing to my turbo outrun machine which is missing the color Red among other things. If these loser trolls want to bash me for replacing a broken CRT with a working LCD monitor they can go ahead and pay pal donate me $200+ to get a new CRT put in and install it for me as well. In the mean time i'll do what i want also with MY OWN FREAKING PROPERTY. Thank you very much. Great video!

    Even though I prefer cabinets with it's original screen, I have no problem with an LCD conversion. Purists will go on about phosphorous glow, and smoother edges, but the truth is: it just doesn't matter as long as you enjoy it. It's your arcade, and you gave it a new life by changing the monitor. For me that's far more important.

    • @dooganchode9447
      @dooganchode9447 4 года назад +3

      It does matter. Resolution, display, the fact that the graphics were designed specifically with a crt in mind.
      Go play a sega genesis on your modern tv, you'll see very quickly why its sub par

    Folks it's dude's game....it's a handy video for folks who's old monitor has died. I appreciate the content. However...saying that an lcd can replace a crt....it cannot(not addressing the content provider here). Scanlines are not the only effect(and IMO it's the least important thing about crt)....phosphor glow that smooths out the jaggies and gives the game that "pop" off the screen is what's lost when going to lcd. Old games look harsh and jaggied out on an lcd. Also, latency is non-existent on a crt and on an lcd it's pretty high in comparison. On those old games, which are always pretty brutal it's definitely something that can effect gameplay. Still think this video is handy for folks who's monitor has died, thanks for the content! Even old console systems look better on a tube tv than a new one. I keep an old school tv for my Ataris and classic nintendos.

Question....using that PC monitor ..which I am assuming is one that the adjustment and power button on the front face...do you just have to remove the plexi and other layers if you need to make any adjustments? This was very helpful. I needed to take out a CRT monitor and replace it with a LCD in an original Arkanoid game. The CRT seemed to work momentarily, but slowly shorted out (included causing smoke coming from under the flyback transformer on the motherboard) so replacing it with a 19" kit from Amazon was necessary.
    I would input that knowing what wires go to which wires was something to go look up also. This forum post was helpful: forums.arcade-museum.com/archive/index.php/t-265260.html They are essentially Red, Blue, Green, Ground (black) and Sync. Yellow is not used in my game. Anything that's not red, blue, green, yellow or black goes to the same sync line.
    Now if I can just get the spinner working or replaced.... Wish me luck!

    Finally, a CRT to LCD conversion done right. Not a hackjob! Well done. The only thing I'd do to improve it is to add a scanline generator (SLG). There are some on e-bay which go for about 20 bucks and give it some authenticity. It simply plugs in between the VGA connections.

    • @youvsyou945
      @youvsyou945 5 лет назад +1

      Scanlines are only a small part of what makes a crt monitor look correct for those vintage arcades. It's the phosphor glow of a crt that smooths out the jaggies and gives the old games that glow. This is the most important thing about the old games on a crt monitor.

    This was a lot of help to boost my confidence but my Ms. PacMan machine was nothing like yours. After buying three different monitors on eBay... I finally got a Dell 19” 4:3 ratio. It turns out I already had a Janna card in my machine but I bought a VGA converter anyway, so decided it use it. I still cannot figure out where the yellow and gray wires go (vert/horizontal) and the very top line of text is nearly all cut off. Besides that, the plastic trim that is concave to match the CRT is not tight, but the video quality is amazing and makes me love the arcade machine so much more!

    Real nice Brad! Looks like you had to leave the monitor always powered on even while not playing. Anyway to power on/off along with PCB or main switch? I had to give up trying to find a replacement Sharp picture tube...went through 3 TV teardowns before deciding to go LCD. My converters come in Tuesday so hope to have running Wednesday. My Dell 1901FP fit right in to my original Midway 1943 monitor frame. Like yours only have a little depth on the screws, but should be fine. I looked at 20in 4:3 formats monitors but could not find any that fit the my frame. Keep the videos coming!

    • @BradTratzinski

      +Kelvin Borthwick Thanks for watching! The LCD that I used remembers the last power state that it was in when unplugged, so I just used a power strip to plug the cabinet and the new monitor into. At this point I removed the leads from the cabinet switch and just directly connected them so the main board is always in the on position. I then wired the switch from the power strip to the switch on the cabinet so that everything still comes on and shuts off with one switch taken from the power strip. Does this crazy talk make any sense? I'll do a video for you on this subject if you are interested. Cheers!

    I was wondering if it would be better to play with a CRT TV vs LCD when playing M.A.M.E emulator!
    Or what could be the best of both worlds, while choosing a graphic card and LCD?
    thx

      CRT is better all day every day, LCD is rubbish with old games

    • @BradTratzinski
      @BradTratzinski  8 лет назад

      It really is the users preference.
      I like LCD myself. There is no wrong screen type to use.
      As for a graphics card and MAME.... If you are not playing 3D games on-board video may be enough for the job depending on the Motherboard.

      MAME will be able to up the resolution and won't really matter.. Anything you play will look fine on it.. I emulate and play Mario Kart Arcade GP 1 and 2 both at high resolutions and look great on anything you play it on.. Old school games will look fine on LCD with MAME.. It's only when you take a 80's classic really and try to just put in a LCD , Not MAME'd that you will see a difference.. I have a 512 in 1 that also allows 1024X768 VGA and it looks fine on a computer monitor.. Just really depends on what you are doing and what you want to acheive.. And for the most part after you make your decision tell the others to kiss your ass... That's normally how it goes..

    if you don't know how to fix it have someone else do it for you that wg4900 if repaired has more operational hours left in it than any NEW lcd om the market . plus its taboo and looked down on in more advanced arcade collecting circles

    • @BradTratzinski

      Most PC monitors will remember the last power state. So if it is on when unplugged, it should just come on when plugged back in.

    Dealing with capkits and pulling the monitor's out and figuring stuff out sucks. I was a purist and still am a bit but don't mind an LCD in place of a crt.

  • @MisterAzathoth

    How would you compare the video quality using the CGA-to-VGA converter versus a decent quality cab CRT? Or it compared to what it would look like running MAME from a PC?
    I have two cabs with horrible monitors, even if I put new caps in them they've got some extremely bad burn in. Buying 2 new CRTs is a much more expensive option than slapping in 2 used LCD monitors.

    • @BradTratzinski
      @BradTratzinski  8 лет назад

      +MisterAzathoth You don't get the scan lines like an original cab, but It looks great in my opinion. I'm using 5ms monitors and I love it.

    This dude ruined NOTHING. I have bunch of games with dead monitors, as much as it pains me to go LCD you know what, the spirit of the game is still there. Not everyone has access to a cache of old monitors to pull from or the skills or network to repair them. I'll be going this route on a few games in my collection that are not super collectable that are still fun to play. For the "A" titles I'll still likely keep the monitors in them. Brad, could you provide a link to the converter you used? Nice work on this one.

      These games were made for 15 kHz CRT. If you want to keep authentic cabinets why get rid of the most important part? If you want easy way just stick with emulators on your laptop...

      Diogo Vieira Hey Diogo, Check the pc/tv device or the tv for TILT, SKEW, and PINCH settings. This should resize your picture just the way you need it. Also try resetting the pc/tv device and the tv. I hope this helps.

    Don't listen to these 'purest' who shame you for replacing the CRT with an LCD monitor... there are times when finding a replacement CRT or repairing one just isn't an option... and not every job has to be a "original restoration". Besides, with a crisp LCD monitor, you can probably see color and detail that wouldn't have even been possible on the tube screen... Some clunkheads just scrap a whole game when their CRT craps out... at least you installed some (somewhat) modern technology and allowed your game to live on... nice work.

    There is an arcade in the city north of me in which their owners are gutting the CRTs out of their cabinets and replacing all of them with LCD screens. Out of the several games they have, only their 80s classic arcade cabinets like Galaga, Ms. Pacaman and Donkey Kong are actually authentic.
    The two KI cabinets they have are clearly gutted frames with LCD monitors, a PC board, and a printed marquee.
    It's disgusting to me to pay 15 dollars for free play on gutted arcade cabinets. I went there in may and beheld an original Ghosts N' Goblins cabinet, and when I came back there yesterdy - Gutted. LCD monitor. No game in it...just a hollow cabinet.
    Go up front and he's ripping a CRT out of an operation wolf cabinet.
    Never going back there again.
