Finn reporting in. Snufkin's old-dub Finnish voice is 11/10. There's this unflappable calm to it that makes you *feel* that he has life figured out and is just letting it take its course.
Another Finn piping in to say: 100% agreed. Snufkin's old-dub voice is perfect because it's so profound. It captures wisdom, calmness, mysticism, and also a good touch of warmth. Snufkin has a very distinctive personality and he's basically a mixture of youth and maturity. Like he's been around the world, knows a lot of stuff, but he's not world-weary. Instead he has this calm optimism. The voice just fits it all so well.
*Little My's finnish voice is the OP, because she both sounds like an old lady and a little gremlin.* Jokes asides, the best voices are the finnish ones in my opinion, also i just love how finnish sounds
When I was a child, I remember hearing Moominmamma's voice actress (Ulla Tapaninen) say that sometimes mothers call her to help them put their children to bed with her calming voice. And even then, as a kid, I immediately thought that's such a good idea.
I grew up with this dub and I remember HATING Little My and Snork's voices when I first heard them in Eng 💀 But I'm more used to them now. It's really interesting how different a character feels just based on their voice!
i love how passionate the finnish dub is, the emotions are really coming through and it gives them so much more character. at least in the old dub, the new one is sadly very soulless and robotic. 🥲 btw, moominmamma's voice actor was also zira in lion king 2, she did such a good job as zira too and i always imagine moominmamma speaking like that, it's so funny 😭
When you compare the Finn dub to other dubs of Moomins, I think you can really see how deep typical Finnish speaking voice is compared to many other languages :D To me these voices all sound soothing but quite normal, while I'm always surprised how high everyone's voice is in the English dub for example :D And I'm not talking about Moomin alone, his voice in that dub is purposefully a childish voice, but even Snufkin's voice is higher pitched and it's very interesting! Kinda makes me think of how every language seems to have a pitch that is specific to that language! Finnish is just a pretty deep and monotone language I think :D
I find that really interesting too! Because of that difference, I didn't judge based on acting, the Finnish acting sounds way more natural to me! I also just love the way the language sounds. English in particular went for higher, more cartoon-ish sounding voices, I guess so it'd have more of an appeal to American kids, but I love how the acting, pitch, and style changes from each dub
To my ear almost all English voices sound really high and it seems like I will never get over the "Wow that's a high voice" feeling that I get so often when listening english speakers. Like many men have higher pitched voice than my mother who's a small woman. It just makes sense that it would work in reverse too.
I grew up with this dub of Moomins, I always watched the show both on tv and VHS. I'm so used to these voices and it's always super interesting to me what foreigners think of the dub. Feeling a touch of some crazy Finnish pride every time people like what they're hearing.
Ang here you see why this Finnish Dub is so iconic, meaninful, and important to us. It didn't sound like a averege kid show dub, it sounded more like every voice actor try to become a character. Their own personal way so much as possible.
Moominmamma in Finnish is basically what every Finnish child coming out of the womb expects to hear. You can’t have a more motherly voice. Also she plays Ursula in the Little Mermaid which is all kinds of confusing.
Moominmamma sounds like the most generic Finnish friendly grandma. Absolutely the way it should be, 10/10. Also, it's just generally funny how she's chronically unable to lose her calm in any situation. Basically in all dubs.
I totally agree with you The finish dub is *cheff kiss* gorgeous ,moominmamma voice actress,,, damn her voice is so relaxing and obviously snufkin voice is so beautiful definitely fits cowboy snufkin from the 70's
It’s funny how Moominmamma’s voice is so smoothing, but let me tell you, her voice actor Ulla Tapaninen also voices Ursula in The Little Mermaid and Zira in The Lion King 2. ;)
This is so interesting to watch as someone who grew up on Finnish moomins. When you said the voice sounded too deep for Moominpapa I was like HUH? His voice _is_ deep :D But after hearing the English dub I see where you're coming from- It's so different! This video was so fun :)
I kinda felt about the same of the English dub of moomins when I first heard about it, as I feel like about OG Finnish dub of Digimon... though I have gotten more used to the voices now. I think the English dub affects Snork, Hemulen, and Moominpappa the worst. These are all characters with strong personality and aspirations, but the English dub makes them seem watered down. I think the reason behind the differences in voice acting is behind how the show was presented. In Finland this was never meant to be a kids show, but a whole family show with serious topics and heartwarming moments. The English dub was clearly meant for just the children. Also, you missed the most important dub change: Groke/Mörkö. I suggest making a full video on them alone ;)
these are great points. I find it SO interesting how different everything is from version to version. I noticed from subbed episodes of the finnish and japanese dubs that a tiny change in dialogue can completely change the weight/theme of the episode AH I can't believe I forgot the Groke! I've seen an episode with her from season two, her roar is iconic
I think mine are Moomintroll: 9/10 Snufkin: 10/10 Snorkmaiden: 10/10 My: 10/10 Snork: 8/10 and Comet's is a 6/10 Sniff: 9/10 Mamma: 10/10 Pappa: 8/10 Stinky: 10/10 Mr. Hemulen: 10/10 we love an unhinged old man with a crazy laugh I really like how this cast aged up all of the characters equally unlike the English dub where everyone had childish voices/dialogue but then you have John Chancer voicing Snufkin which isn't bad by all means but still made the misconception that Snufkin was an adult when he's clearly meant to be a child like everyone else at the start of the books
I grew up with this dub and I want to say these are the best Finnish voice acting I have ever heard. Maybe there are a couple of extra great performances in Disney movies but overall as a series these hold very well. I have held this title for them for almost three decades now.
I highly recommend to hear Grokes voice. Since when we first saw her in english dub she is quiet and doesn't make much voice. But in Finnish dub it's whole diffrent thing and creepy asf
I really appreciate both the finish and english dubs. They are both so unique (from each other and on their own). I like how fun, upbeat, and campy the english dub is, and I like how relaxing and fitting the Finnish dub is.
The English voices are alright but comparing the two really highlights how full of emotion is the original YLE Finnish dub is. In many cases in the English episodes, it seems so strange to have the actors deliver most lines with an emotion or tone that's just kind of general and not particularly fit to the particular situation at hand.
oml, i love their voices. Finnish seems really pleasant to listen to. I think I like these better than the english dub tbh, regardless of how much i enjoy John Chancer’s voice. They fit well. Great vibes. Pretty cool that snuf and moomin sound similar in age here too, bc i always felt kinda odd about it in English fjsjjdjd sniff 🥺 SNORKMAIDENNNNN i love them all so much and the finnish voices work really welllll 💖 ok mr hemulen’s laugh though 🥺 moominmamma feels like she would wrap me up in a warm hug. her voice is soothing. pappa’s is nice too but yeah, it did feel a little strange. it’s not the depth for me though, so im not sure what about it has an ooc feel lol stinky is perfect
finally i got an opinion of a non-finnish person about the finnish voice actors voices, i thought that i prefered the finish voices sooo much more thanks to nostalgia but it seems that i was wrong :3 and ye i do question a lot why some characters sound more dummier in english dub compared to finish (specially snork and moomin pappa), then theres also that lots of the voices are quite more deeper too in finnish version
Yeah, as someone who grewup with Moomin and had these voices to listen, I can confirm that they're pretty good and bring out childhood memories like nothing else
I really love how the finnish voices sounds. I think snorkmaiden's is my favourite, it sounds so pretty. Though Hemulins gave me quite a shock, doesn't really fit him in my opinion.
I really wanna point out that THAT scene and that episode is the most chaotic and unhinged we've ever seen Hemulen. Watch any other episode with him in it and you'll see that the voice absolutely fits him. He sounds calm, which he usually is. But I do like the English dub too! It's a different version of Hemulen but a good one nonetheless.
Sorry, but Matti Ruohola is the one and only Moominpappa for me. The English one sounds a little out of character to me but that's probably due to my own bias. (Though Tove and Lars Jansson themselves were among the people who picked the Finnish and Swedish voice actors for the characters.)
Oh my god, I commented already but I just have to tell you this: the finnish voice actress of moomin mamma voices Ursula in the finnish dub of little mermaid! I thought it'd be a fun fact since I was shocked when I first found out
I really like the English dub, but I adore this one! Well done, a really good video 🙏 Just a suggestion: I would love for you to react to Groke’s voice in different dubs, like her ”I’ll be back” thingy and her growling. I’ve understood they can sound quite different. The thing that upset me most with the English dub was actually how silent the Groke was in the first episodes (those with the suitcase), because in Swedish dub she literally growls all the time she’s in frame.
She growls always in Finnish dub also (this older version at least, there’s a new dub also but I don’t like it so haven’t heard Groke so much in that one). Tho there’s a little twist between this old Finnish dub Groke vs English Groke...
First time hearing english voices after growing up with a finnish dub was horrible, but some I grew to like (moominpappa) but snork and hemulen in english are so bad...Fun voice actress fact, Moominmamma's finnish voice is also Ursula from little mermaid and Zira from lion king 2, she has range. :'D Interesting you thought snorkmaiden's voice was deep, to my ear she's horribly shrill..heard somewhere finnish people are more used to/it's more common to have deeper voices, I guess there's some truth in that. 😆
My favorite SNufkin voice is Japanese because it sounds so freaking relaxing, but Finnish is my third favorite and I could listen to him speak all day :3

I grew up with this dub and I love it, but the Japanese dub is incredible, especially little My, I think I like her more in the japanese dub, but other than that the Finnish one is nr 1 for me.
I personally can't watch it unless the voices are in japanese. Particularly Moomins and Little My's because it feels super weird hearing the super deep voices when I'm accustomed to Moomin sounding like little baby Conan lol
@@moomshroomsoup Great to hear that! If that helps you in any way, the whole Polish dub is available on RUclips - just type in "muminki" in the search bar.
British made the relationship between moomin and Snufkin.. Well just gay. Which in turn irritates me, moomins have those character like Tofslan and Vifslan (the tiny guest) and Tove was bisexual I know, but her character was Tooticky.
I'm biased because I grew up with the original finnish voices so I prefer all of them over any of the english voices but the english voices are overall pretty good. I only don't like Snork's voice because in the finnish dub, he sounds so sarcastic and I feel like in the english dub he just sounds sorta goofy. I also pretty much hate Sniff's voice because oh my god does he sound annoying. In the finnish dub he's annoying without actually being annoying. I feel like their personalities sorta change with the english dub but that's just how it sounds for me. Dunno if that makes sense at all. None of the other voices bother me, I mean don't really like Moomintroll's and Snorkmaiden's english voices but they're fine. My favorite english voices are Snufkin, Stinky and Little My TLDR: least favorite english voices: Sniff, Snork favorite english voices: Snufkin, Stinky, Little My
I really have to agree with you there. It's hard for me to pick up on the acting (not knowing Finnish) but I can tell their personalities change somewhat from dub to dub. I probably would have liked Sniff a lot sooner if I watched the Finnish dub first 😂 and I must say I agree with your favorites/least favorites on the english one
Finn here! I've just gotten a glimpse of the English dubs and they all sound foreign and out of place to me. Snufkin is so good in Finnish but I like all the others too. Sniff is as annoying in Finnish as it is in English, I'm sure. He's the doubtful coward. Never was a fan of him.
The english dub seems too basic and childlike to me. Snufkin, Sniff, Moomin, Myy and Snorkmaiden all sound like kids in english. The finnish one always had more grungy and deeper voices which works way better.
Finn reporting in. Snufkin's old-dub Finnish voice is 11/10. There's this unflappable calm to it that makes you *feel* that he has life figured out and is just letting it take its course.

@@kithann99 omg thank you!
@@moomshroomsoup No problem! Glad I could help
Man I love sniff’s voice so much but I have not heard the English voice
sadly, it's not an improvement 😂
British made the relationship between moomin and Snufkin..
Well just gay. Which in turn irritates me, moomins have those character like Tofslan and Vifslan (the tiny guest) and Tove was bisexual I know, but her character was Tooticky.
ORIGINAL DUB
My favorite english voices are Snufkin, Stinky and Little My
TLDR: least favorite english voices: Sniff, Snork
favorite english voices: Snufkin, Stinky, Little My
I really have to agree with you there. It's hard for me to pick up on the acting (not knowing Finnish) but I can tell their personalities change somewhat from dub to dub. I probably would have liked Sniff a lot sooner if I watched the Finnish dub first 😂
and I must say I agree with your favorites/least favorites on the english one
I hate Moomintrolls english voice tbh. He is supposed to be a young man, not a 7 years old girl. Thats exactly why I love his finnish voice so much.
