Someone has probably already pointed it out, but almost everyone has a finnish accent in the swedish dub, and I absolutely love it since Tove Jansson was one of the minority swedes in Finland.

That's one of my main reasons the Swedish dub is my favourite, more than Finnish. I'm not sure about other dubs, but I'm pretty sure Swedish is the only one to use a dialect outside of the language's country, that being in Finland. Like, it makes the dub so unique and charming, and it definitely contributed to my love for finlandssvenska (Finland Swedish).

Um yeah when I heard Japanese Stinky for the first time I was like “WAIT WAS HE SUPPOSED TO BE A TODDLER THE WHOLE TIME-“
Also I noticed that while in the English dub they try to make him more similar to how he originally was in Tove Janssons work by indicating that most of his actions are driven by crime, like for example when he wanted to use Ninny to rob a bank, in the Japanese version he’s just like “Haha lol ima bully her cause it feels good”.
Moomin’s Japanese voice really gives me “main character” vibes though. Great voice in my opinion. It’s a bit older then the English voice, and a bit younger then the Scandinavian voices.

I think I’m a bit biased when it comes to dubs because I watched the Japanese one with my mom first, so the memories and good feels of it are kinda synonymous with everyone’s voices. I do think that Snorkmaiden’s is kinda generic though, I would’ve liked it if they made her sound older like the Swedish/Finnish dub because here she just sounds like a Doraemon’s Shizuka kind of character.
    Swedish: 9/10
    Japanese: 9/10
    Both are great imo!

  • @Frozen_Death_Knight

To me the Fin-Swedish dub is practically a perfect dub. All the actors nailed their roles. I am born Swedish, but I also am half-Finnish, so I grew up with this accent when I visited my grandparents. The dub is pretty authentic in that the voices don't over-act and are more grounded. Also, it is a bit of a cultural thing where Nordic dubs tend to favour male actors for younger roles, which is in stark contrast with English dubs that tend to cast actresses to voice younger roles. A prime example of this is Ash Ketchum from Pokémon. In Swedish he's voiced by a male, unlike the English dub.
As for the Japanese version, I only got to hear it for the first time some years ago. It is honestly pretty good from my own perspective. The acting is not overly cartoony, which I think matches the source material. I also think Mumin/Moomin and Snorkfröken/Snorkmaiden both sound pretty good considering that they went with them being younger. It is a bit interesting that I always found the Swedish versions sounding older to work better since they are both in a romantic relationship, so hearing foreign dubs with younger sounding actors always felt a bit off. Still, the Japanese actors pulled it off pretty well.
Also, I always found the Japanese version to be a smörgosbord of fun trivia. The voice cast is filled to the brim with well known VAs. My favourite one is Snusmumriken/Snufkin having the same voice actor as Dio Brando from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Admiral Aokiji from One Piece. The show was of such high quality. I got to say as well, the Japanese intro/outro are so freaking beautiful. I love the Nordic intro/outro as well, but man, Japan nailed it with the music, along with the rest of the soundtrack.

The Swedish dub is always my preferred dub, probably mostly due to nostalgia. But I would argue that the Swedish dub is how the Moomins are supposed to sound like as they were written in Swedish by a finlandsvensk.

Hi, thanks for uploading this, as someone who grew up watching the Swedish dub it was very interesting to see what you think of it and the other dubs! Moomin is huge in Sweden as the books were originally written in Swedish (due to Tove Jansson being part of Finland's Swedish-speaking minority). I also read Moomin books and comics in Swedish as a kid, and watching the Swedish dub of the show (which I didn't know was technically an anime until adulthood) I always thought the characters sounded right compared to what I pictured reading the books. Admittedly I'm also very partial to the Swedish dub, both since it's the books' and comics' original language and because I really love the accent all the characters have, which probably doesn't fully come across to non-Swedish speakers. (My grandparents were also Finland-Swedish like Tove Jansson, though they had moved to Sweden. For this reason the accent always reminds me of my grandmother and my childhood, so it has a very positive connotation for me! My grandparents' children and grandchildren - who grew up in Sweden - didn't inherit the accent, though.) One question: What score would you give Sniff's Swedish voice out of 10? I don't think you gave a score for him in the video.
Anyway, watching the other dubs was definitely a unique experience for me. Since I grew up watching it in Swedish it feels very odd to me to hear dubs where the characters sound drastically different (or where the way they talk just has a different "vibe"). xD Concerning the English dub, I think several characters sound okay, but I don't like Moominpappa's voice at all. Not that it's completely wrong for his character, but it's so different, getting used to it would be very difficult! He sounds quite eccentric (character-wise) which isn't necessarily bad, but I personally think a deeper, more neutral-toned voice is more appropriate for him and his "old-fashioned father archetype" character. I'm also not a big fan of Snufkin's voice (I think the way he speaks is just too enthusiastic for his calm character), and while Little My and Snorkmaiden don't sound terrible, I do prefer the other voices/performances I've heard for them. Overall I think my favourite voice in the English dub (out of the main cast) is for Moominmamma, her voice is great. The Japanese dub, though, I like a lot! My one complaint with the Swedish dub (when it comes to the main characters) is that I think Snufkin's voice doesn't completely match with the way he's drawn. His Japanese voice, on the other hand, is perfect in my opinion. That's just the way I always pictured his voice when reading his dialogue in Swedish. I also like his Finnish voice better than his Swedish voice. And speaking of the Finnish dub: I really love that one as well, I think it sounds quite similar to the Swedish dub overall which is a plus for me. Fun fact if you didn't know, the Finnish and Swedish dubs have the same singer for the opening theme, though the lyrics don't have the same meaning.
Anyway, I'd rank the dubs I've heard like this:
    1. Swedish dub
    2. Finnish dub
    3. Japanese dub
    4. English dub
(Note: I have not watched any part of the new Moominvalley series in any language, so I can't compare. I have read that the Swedish dub of that series does use Finland-Swedish actors like the 1990s series, though.)

    • @HikariMichi42

I think one interesting thing is that different countries and languages may have different archetypes and "expectations" for how different characters are supposed to sound (due to differences in culture and the way languages sound when spoken, plus just long-established dubbing conventions). For that reason I think people speaking one language may want/expect a particular character to have a certain kind of voice and/or speak a certain kind of way, but in another language the expectations may be entirely different. Hence why a particular dub may sound "perfect" to native speakers of that dub's language, but "odd" to people who speak a different language and/or grew up with a different culture. (One example of this is that in Japan, young boys and young men are nearly always voiced by adult women, and the Japanese audience has grown used to this and probably come to expect it. But in Sweden young boys and young men are nearly always voiced either by child actors or by adult men. So I wasn't surprised by Moomintroll having a female voice actor in the Japanese dub, but I also don't think he sounds "off" being voiced by an adult male actor like in the Swedish and Finnish dubs. Though it may help that Moomintroll's exact age isn't known. I think his English voice is pretty good, but I like the Japanese one better since it sounds slightly older in my opinion.) And it's naturally also easier to tell how good the acting in a particular language is if you speak it yourself. Myself I understand a little bit of Japanese (from watching anime) but I know hardly any words in Finnish, so I think it's easier for me to judge the quality of the acting in the Japanese dub compared to the Finnish dub, though I can't do it as well as a native or fluent speaker of either language could.
Also side note, if anyone's interested: In the past, Swedish-speaking Finns often didn't speak Finnish at all (my grandparents couldn't speak it, because everyone spoke Swedish in their region of Finland at the time when they grew up, and they didn't learn the language at school), but nowadays I've heard that most or all Swedish-speaking Finns also learn Finnish at school and probably speak it fluently. In Sweden though hardly anyone speaks or understands Finnish outside of people born in Finland or who have Finnish parents (plus speakers of the minority language "tornedalsfinska"/Meänkieli in northern Sweden, which is different from the Finnish spoken in Finland). The Swedish and Finnish languages are not related despite the countries being next to each other. Norwegian, Danish and Icelandic are all related to Swedish, but not to Finnish (Norwegian being the most similar to Swedish, and Icelandic the least). Speakers of Swedish, Norwegian and Danish can often understand a little or a lot of each other's languages, particularly in written form, because the way the related words are spelled is more similar from one language to another than the way they're pronounced. (These comments got REEEAALLY long, sorry ... 😅)

I LOVE hearing your thoughts fr 👏 To answer your question, I'd give Swedish Sniff 9/10. It reminds me a lot of the English voice, but it's less grating and sounds more natural.
I agree with you on the English dub, where everyone has a different vibe- I think that's why I enjoy these other dubs so much. There's a special quality about them, "the nordic feel", as I've heard it called, and I love it.
Funny you should mention Moominpappa, because I originally felt that way about him in the _other_ dubs. I was used to his voice being higher and more eccentric, which literally shaped the way I saw his character, so I thought the deeper voices didn't suit him (though I'd disagree now, I like his Finnish voice especially). Fun fact if you didn't know, Moominpappa has a different English va in later episodes. It's quite a bit deeper, but still eccentric, which suits him more than the first. As for Snorkmaiden, I prefer her in _literally_ every other dub. I just think her va went way too high and if sounds forced/makes Snorkmaiden sound...well, not as smart? Even though she's not a genius, she's resourceful in her own way and I don't think she's dumb by any means. The Enlish dub is a mixed bag, and while I don't dislike it altogether, it's like drinking skim milk after hearing more quality dubs.
I think I'd rate them similarly to you, going
      1. Finnish dub
      2. Swedish dub
      3. Japanese dub
      4. English dub
Also, I _highly_ recommend watching Moominvalley sometime. The English dub (and what I've heard of Finnish) is _high quality_ 👌 very good casting in my opinion.
Thank you for the comments! Loved reading them, and I always love learning more about other languages. Very interesting stuff :)
