I enjoyed this review so much. To know that there are others that were moved as much as I was in some of those scenes is great. Imo I think the dark knight rises had so much up against it, incredible expectations(almost unapproachable), extremely tough shoes to fill(villain wise especially) and it came out like a boss. That is why I put it slightly ahead of TDK. Great review guys!!!
Yeah I agree, But you could go with Rocky 4 and 5 as well. Rocky 4 he fights a huge guy from another country who is unbeatable, He also leaves it all behind and goes to train alone. Rocky 5 he is broke and has nothing, Then it ends with a street fight... So yes some very similar plot devices.
I'm confused do a lot of people think the final scene represented Batmans retirement? I saw the ending as "I'm happy Alred as "Batman", The film is called The Dark Knight Rises. and the change in Bruces character is "I want to go die as Batman" to "I want to live my life as Batman". I saw the film as Bruce fully embrasing who he is and forever shall be "Batman"
A a lot of great trilogys LOTR, Star Wars, Indiana Jones.... It stopped at 3 for me. Nolans Batman trilogy is the right one for me, Nothing else does it for me like these damn Nolan/Batman movies.
WOW guys, fantastic review!! I literally was nodding and agreeing with both of you through this whole video. After seeing the movie myself on Friday I couldn't agree more with anything you both said. Thank you guys for this totally badass review!
When it was over, I had this weird smile on my face that wouldn't go away until I got to the car. When I said a few words with that smile, it sounded like I had been crying. I didn't actually cry, but I was extremely welled up. It's like that smile was a cork holding in the 'epic emotional conclusion emotion.' Anyone else have that happen?
I agree that they are masterpieces and a complete trilogy. My take on the three films are: Batman Begins (Fear) - The Character Study - Bruce Wayne overcomes fear and becomes "the Batman". The Dark Knight (Chaos) - The Crime Saga - In the aftermath of the mass chaos caused by the Joker, Batman realizes that Gotham deserves him but doesn't need him. The Dark Knight Rises (Pain) - The Action-Packed Finale - Batman overcomes pain to "rise" to save Gotham one last time before passing to the torch.
Oh, it was the perspective, as i suspected.. Anyways, you're a great guy great videos, keep them coming.. I still wonder why I haven't subscribed yet, as I have been watching them for months. Another question: What movies are you looking forward to review, now that the most anticipated ones have been released?
The more I think about it, the more i love it. My only real complaint was that Bane had some dialogue that was hard to comprehend. Apart from that, I may be in the minority that enjoyed Bane more than the joker. He was just so chillingly intimidating and captivating.
>>> continuation which gives the audience the feeling of the grandness to this fight once more. Also, that comment of Bane when he says " you adopted the shadow, I grew in the shadow". That quote just flat out said to me bane is too good and you could feel bane was actually the shadow itself. That fight was truly a great set up to the final fight. Great review.
My goodness you guys just analyze these movies so perfectly. I want to do a joint review with you one of these days over Google+. I know I don't have that many videos up, but I would really like to do a review with you guys soon for like The Hobbit or Django Unchained. Keep up the good work guys!
Batman Begins: Orgin of Batman The Dark Knight: Action oriented The Dark Knight Rises: Batman behind the cape and cowl People need to stop putting the films in competition with each other when its the same franchise! Us Batman nerds should rejoice about these masterpieces to our favorite super hero. The greatest trilogy of all time.
John Blake's character transcends to Batman 'cause why the hell would Bruce(it also could've been Blake) rebuilt the batsignal? I mean if Blake becomes Robin or Nightwing, why would he be using a batsignal? Christopher Nolan just merged Robin with Batman and in BB when Bruce says to Alfred that as a symbol he could be everlasting.Hence the dark knight lives on.Nolan's a genius. He completes one of the greatest trilogies with no loose ends and in a very satisfying note.
Fantastic review, guys! btw, Chris, I was EXACTLY the same way as you before seeing this film. I've stopped reading or watching reviews before seeing films I'm excited for, because that can even ruin great movies. I literally said the same exact thing to my dad. I turned off the TV when they started talking about the movie. At work, I heard someone mention Lucius Fox and I went fast in the opposite direction, haha. I was NOT going to have this movie spoiled or overhyped for me.
And in Batman Begins, Ra's Al Ghul says to Batman on the train, "Don't be afraid, Bruce." Just before the train flies off the tracks and explodes. Small hints, but I think if you payed attention throughout the trilogy you should be able to connect the dots and figure out that Bruce Wayne is Batman. Pure genius.
Yeah exactly, and the reason he see's Bruce with Selina, instead of Rachael as you would assume (as a friend of my questioned) is because Alfred is aware that ultimately it was Selina that brought Bruce out of seclusion obviously caused by Rachaels death
never realised until i rewatched the animated dark knight returns movie that the 'magic knee brace' from Rises was in that book (it was a magic arm brace in that book - he puts it on after he fights the mutant leader) and so was that gun-thing he uses when he returns and chases bane's guys on the bike. i noticed all the other nods except those two.
If the Nolan trilogy continues ( which Nolan has stated he will NOT direct any more Batman films) you'll see JGL as Batman because it flows with the message from the first film, become more than a man, become a legend a myth, and with JGL taking over if completes the "circle"
One of the best moments of the film was pretty early, but after Batman saved Catwoman's life and while they're talking, Batman turns his head for a second and when he looks back, Catwoman is gone and he says "So that's how that feels." Best. Meta line. Ever.
btw, I supported Anne Hathaway from day one. Sure, I was a bit unsure, but I knew she wouldn't be randomly picked for Catwoman. With all respect to Julie Newmar and Michelle Pfeiffer, Anne was EASILY the best version of Catwoman we've ever gotten on screen. She had great chemistry with all the actors, her character had depth, and she was incredibly sexy. The people complaining about her outfit were looking at low-res pics. We see the details in the film and it's awesome. :D
He's a producer. Zach Snyder is directing. I think people are over exemplifying the control he has on Man of steel. Helped build the story and is a producer. Zach Snyder deserves the most credit here as hes the man behind the camera and takes at all times while Chris Nolan used the rest room like once on set.
First I'd like to say thanks for having that respectful message in the beginning. That's very nice and humane of you. Now I thought the movie was great! I liked how the movie had a lot of the ideas and plots from the Knightfall story even though it wasnt done exactly the same way. For example in both the movie and the comic batman's will is broken, its just for different reasons. Another thing, did alfred bring a tear to your eye? My only and BIGGEST complain is the Robin john blake character.
Biggest issue I had with TDKR: Talia's death scene... So weak and so quick and I actually found it lame. But honestly, i loved the fact that Batman was torn down to nothing. The symbolism of the pit and his final climb when the bats came out was too perfect. And the fact that Batman was actually corrupted by Bane. He verbalized against his no-killing policy when he said "You now have my permission to die" to Bane. And that ending... Damn. These are the things that made this one better to me.
once i found out john blake was an orphan I knew he was Robin. I loved how Nolan introduced im in a realistic way Batman wasnt goin to have a teen or child sidekick. Bruce left the Cowl for Blake because he is exactly like him. Nolan is a great director. Greatest trilogy of all time
They didn't mention him at all. Nolan made this very clear. I thought it was very classy to not make any mention of him. To try to cover up a real-life tragedy for a comic-book narrative would have been disrespectful. Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, and the rest of the cast/crew of The Dark Knight truly respected Heath and all were on board with completely leaving the character the way Heath left it.
question about something though...if Banes goal was to just destroy Gotham..why wouldn't he just blow it up as opposed to siege Gotham for a few months
What are your thoughts about the Star Spangled Banner scene? To me it's the best part of the film. It felt haunting, lonely, and suspenseful. No sound comes except for a few lines of dialogue over the song, and it completely makes me nervous for destruction.
Just to be sure I watched the movie a second time and couldn't find one reason that any part of the ultimate goal wouldn't have worked. It was fool proof. All the way down to Bruce falling for Miranda and giving her control of the company having no idea she's the one who's pulling ALL the strings. Bruce Lee broke his back and went on to regain his past strength, walk again, and certainly kick ass again. So could Bruce. ONLY thing I would have changed is decreasing the bass on Bane's voice
Wasn't Gordon already aware who Batman was, as when he was in hospital didn't Gordon inform Blake about the identity of Batman, which induces a visit by Blake to Bruce Wayne's abode? In spite of still sounding pedantic, wasn't Gordon asking for Batman's permission at the end of film to disclose to the citizens of Gotham whom Batman really was?
you said that bane was bigger than batman, he is actually two inches shorter, very good camera work in the fight scenes, only adds to the movies brilliance
That fight against bane and batman, where cat woman is watching, I could not agree more with the comment of the rawness of that fight, especially batman screaming. The fight had no weapons or big grand explosions, it was pretty much who is a better fighter, that is why its such an epic fight. The fight was great with the lights on , but when batman turns off the lights as a last resort to try to win the fight ( great idea by the director to put that in) it screamed out desperation from batman,
Great review from two really consistently good Internet critics. I had problems with the script, but I thought the film overall gave you your money's worth.
One thing that I liked about this movie was in the pit Nolan paid homage to Bruce's dad saying Why do we fall? Also, I was reading some info about both Talia and Selena and in to versions, they both have children from Bruce and I think that if there was another trilogy by Nolan, I could see Talia returning.
Blake's real/legal name is Robin, and Bruce left that Batman "empire" to him in his will. It's hinted that Blake will become the next incarnation of Batman or Nightwing or whatever.
you guys are right on about the fight scene when batman screams, listen i train in mma and its very true when your loosing a fight and your giving it your all you act exactly like how he did in the movie that fight scene was just so realistic
Did anyone notice the picture in the frame of christopher nolan and his family. Then i relised while watching the movie that bruce wayne had already fixed the auto pilot when he said on top of the building when he was with lucious with the bat " Lucious: How does she fly. Bruce wayne: She flies fine, EVEN WITHOUT AUTO PILOT. I don't know anyone that noticed it. but i know i am not the only one that noticed it. AMAZING MOVIE, Great Review.
TDKR is definitely bigger and more epic but not better than TDK. I had to let some thing about the film slide because it's part of this great trilogy. One one thing that separates Joker from Bane the most is Joker interacts with almost every main character in TDK and they are all great moments(the cell interrogation, mob meeting, in the hospital, etc) whereas Bane rarely interacts with anyone, he's mainly just very imposing.
Hey guys, awesome review. I thought this movie was incredible, I haven't seen anything like it. This to me was the best trilogy ever and I'm a huge LOTR guy, but these 3 were just amazing. I like DKR the best out of them. I think this deserves an Oscar nod for best film. The last hour was the best hour I've ever seen in any movie. Bale gives his best performance yet. The movie leaves a haunting effect, I could watch this every day and not get enough. I think the score by Zimmer plays a huge role
And I thought it was perfectly clear that Robin John Blake was going to the next Batman. Nolan even said that the name was his nod to the character and to the fans.
I gotta agree with John. Thought The Dark Knight Rises was the best in my personal opinion. But these movies are so amazing in their own way individually that someone could claim any of the 3 was their favorite and I couldn't fault them for that.
Hey John, what do you think of Nolan handling the new Superman film? I wanna get excited about it but it just seems so foreign compared to the Dark Knight trilogy or anything else Nolan's done.
Nope, Wayne is alive. For one, Lucius Fox finds out that Bruce Wayne fixed the autopilot. That scene wouldn't have been there if Bruce Wayne was dead. Also, Alfred saw Bruce with Selina Kyle. He had no idea they were even romantically linked, so he wouldn't have imagined them together. This is not Inception.
I loved John Blake's character. As soon as Blake figured out who Batman was I knew that he was "Robin." But not one Robin in particular. I think he is a combination of at least Dick and Tim.Tim figures out who Batman is (proving his detective skills match Bruce's) and Dick becomes the Bat heir (even if only temporarily). However I think Blake will skip the sidekick stage and go straight to taking over the Batman cowl.
I think Alfred seeing Wayne in ITALY can be up to the viewer; if u want Wayne to live, then Alfred really did see him, but if u think he died, then Alfred was just dreaming seeing Wayne. Nolan kind of gave it an inception ending....
morgan freeman knee Bruse was batman already. proof is in the second movie at the end. When batman told him to use the sonar to see what he couldn't see. Freeman said he wouldn't work for Wayne Industries as long as the device was still in use after he helped him.
i loved the john blake character! i still interpreted him becoming something other than batman - it wouldn't make sense for him to just take on bruce's creation. and since he's mostly influenced by the tim drake character, i feel like it would have been robin, or even red robin. blake said himself he didn't want to wear a mask, but batman said it would be for the people he cared for - how poetic would it be to go by his real name when fighting crime, and the name "john blake" as his "mask"?
theFLICKpick , Quite late in this case, I have a strong inclination to believe that several plot holes in this movie were caused by studio interference (RESHOOT!). It is very clear that Nolan attempted to revisit the French Revolution, having Bane as a new Robespierre supported by new Gotham Jacobins (and their popular courts). The film was made after 'Occupy Wall-Street', and after a decade-long War in the Middle East. The first act indicates that a Vengeful Bane would be a former blackOps (or SpecialOps) affected by Chemical weapon ("no one cared who I was until I put on the mask"), who recruited renegade veterans to rise against the system, as well as street dwellers living in the underground (Veterans who would lately know how to use vehicles developed by Wayne enterprises). Bane returns the city to the people, attacks the financial system (kind of plutocracy) and makes despicable partnerships with greedy businessmen. In this situation, Wayne would confront a fundamental question: As a Millionaire, would he be a member of the social establishment that aggravated social inequality and created the poverty and criminality that he fought? (Please note the appeal to Philanthropy and Clean Energy as a way to alleviate a feeling of guilt). However I believe Nolan could never develop such a film with such ambiguity in USA (Ayn Rand is too strong in the minds of people, and it could be easily labeled as a leftist movie, although it would not be the point, because one of the consequences of French Revolution was Napoleon! The political question would be important, not the answer...). I really think he was forced (by WB/DC) to amend the trilogy, and this is clear in the second half of the film (disastrous): The league of shadows is well suited to explain, but not to substantiate, the ideological motivations of the villains. Nolan was ambitious, but he could never present political ideas in that depth. What would be a deep movie, in the sense of political questions, was infantilized and became a palatable mess...
I'm kind of torn. I feel like TDKR was basically bigger and better on most every level, but I also feel like it had some pacing problems. As a whole I think TDK was a smoother ride but TDKR gives you so much more character development and emotion it's really hard to choose.
I thought it was a great movie but theres alot controversy about if bruce still being alive in the end or not, and why do they call it "dark knight rises"? I think it pushes to the conclusion that this is not a trilogy but more of a 4-5 movie situation. Unless it was just the names of the first two movies put together.
i thought this movie was simply INCREDIBLE and a tad bit BETTER than its predecessor, i loved Tom Hardy's Bane! The way he portrayed it and the fact that he was barbaric was awesome and the voice was also great i thought, i went to the dark knight trilogy for its midnight premiere where i live and at the end of TDKR when my friend and i heard "Robin" we just looked at eachother with this look of pure shock, and i kid you not when walking out i was SHAKING! 10000/10
The Dark Knight Trilogy will be my favorite trilogies to watch from time to time because of how different they are to each other and the themes that it has. Also, i remember when i saw The Dark Knight Rises on opening day, i cried at the end knowing that this will be the last Batman movie that Nolan would Direct. I loved Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, but my favorite would be The Dark Knight Rises.
How do you feel that they gave no honorable mention to the joker? At least i'm pretty sure they didn't. After touching so much on what happened to dent I feel it would have been appropriate even though Heath is no longer with us.
My two favorite movie reviewers. I love you guys.
This is the video that introduced me to the John!
this is video that introduced me to Chris!!
"do you feel in charge", that part gave me chills
After the teaser I have hope, To early to judge, I need some action shots. It has Kevin Costner so thats a plus.
I have a video all about this in the works, Plus a few more things. I will just say I would of felt cheated.
TDKR was so amazing it bkew my mind and had goosebumps throughout the film
Ahhh tha good old days when they both liked movies
Yeah I agree, But you could go with Rocky 4 and 5 as well. Rocky 4 he fights a huge guy from another country who is unbeatable, He also leaves it all behind and goes to train alone. Rocky 5 he is broke and has nothing, Then it ends with a street fight... So yes some very similar plot devices.
the bit where he was climbing out of the hole successfully was one of my favourite parts of the trilogy, I also prefer bane to the joker
I was expecting you guys to talk about the conversation that Bruce Wayne and Alfred had. That whole scene broke my heart. It was painfully beautiful
I'm confused do a lot of people think the final scene represented Batmans retirement? I saw the ending as "I'm happy Alred as "Batman", The film is called The Dark Knight Rises. and the change in Bruces character is "I want to go die as Batman" to "I want to live my life as Batman". I saw the film as Bruce fully embrasing who he is and forever shall be "Batman"
amazing reviewe ,,,for best movie & trilogy ever seen
Crish: What are you Nolan? You're like an Alien

The ending scenes almost made me cry, in front of my Grandma! When the black woman hands him the bag and says "Robin" *Goosebumps*
I agree that they are masterpieces and a complete trilogy. My take on the three films are:
Batman Begins (Fear) - The Character Study - Bruce Wayne overcomes fear and becomes "the Batman".
This review actually made me appreciate tdkr alot more now
the intro was very nice
Oh, it was the perspective, as i suspected.. Anyways, you're a great guy great videos, keep them coming..
I still wonder why I haven't subscribed yet, as I have been watching them for months.

PERFECT movie! PERFECT!
Love this review guys! Love this film! Love this trilogy! Love Nolan! THANK YOU GUYS

it's a great story on "learning to pick yourself up whn you fall" just like bbegins, to rise upon revenge , guilt , redemptation.
levit said " i dont want to hide behind a mask" , batman responed "the mask isnt to protect u, its to protect your loved ones"

A part of me thinks Bruce Wayne really did die because Alfred said he envisioned him in a happier place and maybe that's all that it was, a vision.

+WyddyBomb 😂
super soldier serum
And I thought it was perfectly clear that Robin John Blake was going to the next Batman. Nolan even said that the name was his nod to the character and to the fans.
I gotta agree with John. Thought The Dark Knight Rises was the best in my personal opinion. But these movies are so amazing in their own way individually that someone could claim any of the 3 was their favorite and I couldn't fault them for that.
True, though I think Nolan was trying to pay respect to Heath by not mentioning him, if that makes sense.
well, it wasn't the ending we needed, but it was the one we deserved
fantastic review guys. one of the best movies ever made easy! i wonder if there be a Roben movie?
Best line of the movie "So that's what that feels like".
It's really too bad your memory card cut off, i was really interested in what you guys were saying about robin...
damm thats far away thanks for letting me know keepy up the awesome videos are you going to review the new total recall
morgan freeman knee Bruse was batman already. proof is in the second movie at the end. When batman told him to use the sonar to see what he couldn't see. Freeman said he wouldn't work for Wayne Industries as long as the device was still in use after he helped him.
Only problem was not knowing what Bane was saying at some points.
I didn't have a favorite movie in the triology because i like to think of them as one story, one BIG story
Heath Ledger's Joker is still my all-time favorite acting performance but I totally agree.
I hate people who judge other's opinions. Keep your own and don't impose.
I thought it was gonna end like Inception where before you see Bruce's face the credits pop up. How would you have felt if that happened.
....actually, I think the symbolism at the end was that the legend of batman lives on in gotham
i loved the john blake character! i still interpreted him becoming something other than batman - it wouldn't make sense for him to just take on bruce's creation. and since he's mostly influenced by the tim drake character, i feel like it would have been robin, or even red robin. blake said himself he didn't want to wear a mask, but batman said it would be for the people he cared for - how poetic would it be to go by his real name when fighting crime, and the name "john blake" as his "mask"?
theFLICKpick , Quite late in this case, I have a strong inclination to believe that several plot holes in this movie were caused by studio interference (RESHOOT!).
Best line . The shadows betray you because they belong to me
I'm kind of torn. I feel like TDKR was basically bigger and better on most every level, but I also feel like it had some pacing problems. As a whole I think TDK was a smoother ride but TDKR gives you so much more character development and emotion it's really hard to choose.
I feel Nolan showed John Blake as robin, just as a little treat to the audience, just like batman and Catwomen in the restruant.
How did you guys feel about Bane having more of a German accent in the movie??? In my opinion, Bane was awesome buy Joker had more memorable scenes,
I thought it was a great movie but theres alot controversy about if bruce still being alive in the end or not, and why do they call it "dark knight rises"?
Nobody ever said it wasn't his plan, but I'm asking for a method of death not a specification.
So John do you plan on going to see the movie again in theaters?
