There was no reason to play musical seats as he already had a different chopper with his band. A seat became available on the bell jet helicopter booked for management and associates. It just turned out unfortunately that there was an extra seat. The story of the Clapton/ Vaughan seat exchange just somebody trying to rewrite the Ritchie Valens/ Waylon Jennings tragic event of the Buddy Holly plane crash. Regardless Stevie's death as well as everybody on that helicopter was tragic especially as it was pilot error and not mechanical failure!!

I'm spoiled - I was lucky enough to see Stevie Ray dozens of times as he rose in prominence when I was living in Austin in the 70s and 80s. I moved to Dallas in 1988 and this 1989 Labor Day weekend event was the last SRV performance I ever saw. I got some killer stills from this show, one which is in permanent exhbition as part of the Austin Music Project at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Austin.

Starting at 3:58 Stevie can sure pull a tear down the cheek of this ole boy. That neck pickup does it to me every single time Stevie! Almost 30yrs later and I still mourn the death of this man.
I'm 17 so I never got to see him or anything but it just makes me wanna cry every time I think about how ill never be able to witness the greatest musician of all time. Atleast I can find a bunch of videos of him so I'm thankful for that. We just lost him way to soon.

Being a guitar player sometimes I get lost on the fretboard and have to really concentrate about where to go next but not stevie man the music just flowed thru him so naturally and he always knew right where to go without even thinking about it....thats true talent
I was 12 yrs old and the only time I ever got to see him live. This was the Miller Lite party. We were WAY in the back, back where they were havin WWE wrestlin matches. Still one of the highlights of my life
We lost him while I was deployed in preparation for Desert Storm The building we stayed in had a PA Only two announcements were made on the PA One was that SRV had passed The other was that the war had started. In retrospect I was far more distraught over the former than the latter.

Elvis was drafted after he became famous and many other musicians and actors too. Fortunately, you have your while life ahead of you. The great thing about Stevie was his ability to get a crowd dancing even if it was a bunch of guitar nerds. Guitar nerds tend to just stare at whomever they’re watching and always seem to forget that concerts are about fun. Stevie could get them all moving.
Saw SRV when he was still unknown at the Berkeley Keystone and there were maybe 50-75 people in the joint. Stevie played it like he was in an arena with 20.000 people. His brilliance was immediately recognizable. He had the two guys in his band and one roadie, and they must've driven from Texas in a van. I'll never forget that night.

30 Years in August 2020..I was deployed fin the USAF 1990-1991 for Desert Shield in Saudi and missed his passing away. I couldn't get my education in the USAF so I left from Germany and earned my bachelors playing music in Okinawa. Thank you for posting the influence that helped me succeed.
I love Stevie Ray Vaughan. I go see Jimmie Vaughan in Austin when I get a chance. I can't help noticing how great Reese Wynan, the keyboard man looks. He is still playing beautifully for Joe Bonamassa and recently made a CD of his own music.
I think that you could define this as knowing you have the audience eating out of the palm of your hand. His facial expressions say it all during the solos In Mary had a little lamb. Amazing to see.
I was there , it was in Houston miller lite/ biggest party & Randy Quaid promoted it . Their was several bands . The last 2 were Fabulous Thunderbirds & Stevie Ray & Double Trouble. What a treat got to see both Vaughan boys that day That was about the 5th time i was blessed to see Stevie... RIP>>> Loved & missed like crazy
Wish I had even one of his many talents, hands ( left or right) ,knowledge or ears ....love how he heard the high e string was flat and tweaked it on the fly.......couple yrs in learning guitar , and I think I could practice 10 hrs a day and not look as relaxed and happy playing stuff half as hard.
I cry whenever I watch video of him I was 15 had a chance to go see him live and all I heard was his radio music I had no clue he was all that until I saw his video of him live in Austin City Limits. By then he was gone already . I am nearly 50 and that is one of my biggest regrets not going to that concert. His studio stuff was to me bland but his concerts were 500% he had passion on stage he gave it all.

I was there, one of the very last concerts I attended. Times were changing and concert officials had begun implementing new rules, stay in your seats, don't have too good of a time and get out of here after the show. Hell, that's when we used to meet all the artist. Gone were the days of love and peace at a concert and in came Father Rules. Dont stay here overnight and play guitar with whomever walked up. Go Home and leave this place tonite or go to jail! Good Times down the drain! We could still do crazy shit in Austin and hang out with whomever was playing but Dallas had turned against us hippies. Now, Austin has turned into another Big D and none of the groove remains. What was a natural eden is now paved over. Bye Bye my land of youth!
Totally agree. That's why many Austin based musicians have left and are leaving like they left Nashville years ago. No telling where the next big American music Mecca will be. If there is another one.
When my daughter was very close to giving birth to my granddaughter, end of Sept 2015, I was willing her on to hold out to 3rd October. She did! RIP Stevie.

Brings back a lot of great memories. I was a student in Austin when SRV, the T-Birds and Eric Johnson were still playing the local clubs. Saw Stevie at Manor Downs when Johnny Cash opened for him. Great show. When he straightened himself out he improved as a guitar player and vocalist. Thanks for the upload!
even with all that PA equipment ,he knew he needed to touch that marshall up a half notch! this tour was the top of it . caught them in Albany NY that fall with Jeff Beck and later in JAckson, MS... all to say is "dayum!".

Only other person I ever saw do that live was Dimebag. But even that wasn't on stage, it was at a party on an acoustic

By then he was gone already . I am nearly 50 and that is one of my biggest regrets not going to that concert. His studio stuff was to me bland but his concerts were 500% he had passion on stage he gave it all.

Damn. I was in downtown Dallas today and just to think stevie was jamming in downtown 30 years ago just about to the day is truly inspiring. His childhood home is only about 7 minutes south of downtown.

I was there, one of the very last concerts I attended. Times were changing and concert officials had begun implementing new rules, stay in your seats, don't have too good of a time and get out of here after the show. Hell, that's when we used to meet all the artist. Gone were the days of love and peace at a concert and in came Father Rules. Dont stay here overnight and play guitar with whomever walked up. Go Home and leave this place tonite or go to jail! Good Times down the drain!
We could still do crazy shit in Austin and hang out with whomever was playing but Dallas had turned against us hippies. Now, Austin has turned into another Big D and none of the groove remains. What was a natural eden is now paved over. Bye Bye my land of youth!
Totally agree. That's why many Austin based musicians have left and are leaving like they left Nashville years ago. No telling where the next big American music Mecca will be. If there is another one.

Brings back a lot of great memories. I was a student in Austin when SRV, the T-Birds and Eric Johnson were still playing the local clubs. Saw Stevie at Manor Downs when Johnny Cash opened for him. Great show. When he straightened himself out he improved as a guitar player and vocalist. Thanks for the upload!
