  • In this video #3 we carry on with our 'Get into Downwinding' series and get you paddling safely in more open waters. Downwinding in more exposed waters is an exhilarating side to our sport. And if you're aware of the risks and you paddle to your ability it can be done safely too.
About the series & other information
This new SUPboarder video series is all about feeling the wind on your back and how to get into one of the most exhilarating sides to our sport… Downwinding. It’s one of the simplest SUP disciplines and it can be done almost anywhere, from narrow rivers to open seas. This series of 3 videos is going to give you all the downwind information you need to get you on the water safely.

What if you can’t retrieve the broken paddle tip ? I think it might be safer to take a spare paddle on open ocean downwind crossing.

This would be the best thing you could do for sure but its were to put it, so it doesn't get in the way?

I’d take a 2 parts paddle tucked under the front bungees.

@@gaeret we have try this once but it effected the water flow over the nose a little. I'm sure if you set it up right it would work OK. If you do it remember to send us a picture. Thanks Reuben

When river Kayaking. Instructor always took a spare for when we would eventually lose our paddle bailing in some rapids. One spare for the group would be perfect. These are big boards. Plenty space for a spare

I ’m a beginner in SUP with a 30 year experience in sea kayaking and sursfski. I always had a paddle leash which I considered extremely important in a surfski where you cannot carry a spare paddle. As a solo paddler I never trusted the best world champions who refuse the paddle leash and just say you never should leave your paddle because it can happen. Even in a group in a big downwind with huge swell and whitecaps if anybody lose his paddle none would be able to help. So I will try to get used of a paddle leash around my wrist as I did in a surfski for 18000 km in 5 years.
