- There's no wrong or right way to climb back onto your SUP after falling off. We have different body shapes and body strength which requires us to use the best technique to suit our ability. This video shows a few different ways to climb back up onto the board and touches on some of the things that may be hindering your ability to climb back on as well.
If you have any other ideas or techniques to help climb back up on the board, please comment below as we would love to hear your experiences.

Glad you mentioned the wind. In my albeit limited experience facing the wind is almost certain to end in failure with the wind getting under the board and it bashing me in the face.
Yeah we got that one in there, like you say its a really pain. Thanks Reuben
Thank you Gary, this will surely help me.
Awesome & Thank you so much for this wonderful tip :)
A great video to show to newbies and it is vital people practice getting back on, until they have it perfected.
Thanks Julie
I love the rope sturrip! Thank you!
Glad you like it
Thank you very much for explaining the different techniques!!!
Glad it was helpful!
thank you so much for this! when its a calm day i will definitely try some of these!
Great let us know how you get on and if they have helped. Thanks Reuben
It's about time someone covered this. I didnt have a problem with getting back onto the board and then for some reason started to struggle. The stytup method may have just changed the game for me and the missus.
Can't wait to try it out.
Well done Supboarder.
Thanks Lawrence 👍🏼 We used a dog lead in this video...

I agree! This happened to me. Was fine and then all of a sudden, I couldnt do it. I thought maybe I was just overthinking haha
Thank you
Excellent information thank you
You're welcome. Thanks for the comment. Beau
I’m anxiously waiting for my 1st SUP to arrive! When I rented a SUP to see if it was for me I didn’t fall off but I know I will at some point. Thanks for the lesson about getting back on!
Glad you learned some techniques. Good luck when the SUP arrives!
Thank you - this has really helped me.
Great to hear! Beau
Thank you For this topic. I fell off a rented, inflatable sup, flatable sup! Im large chested, I was struggling to get back up! Love the stirrup idea!
Glad this video could help. Thanks for sharing your comment. Beau
My tip: It is easy once you are parallel to the SUP, meaning when you kick your legs well to make your position fully horizontal.
I found out it is harder to do so when you are grabbing the SUP (it is hard to kick your legs and make yourself horizontal).
What I do - I make myself horizontal near to the SUP, but do not grab it at that point. My head is next to it, i may even dip my head underwater for 2-3 seconds to make myself horizontal faster by kicking the legs, and only once I am horizontal near the SUP, only then I garb it and very easily slide on it.
So to put it short - make yourself fully horizontal next to the SUP and only then grab it and slide on.
Do not grab first and then try to make yourself horizontal, as it is much harder when half your body is already on the SUP...
Great tip! Thanks for sharing
Kind of like getting a run up?
Thank you
Not parallel?

Good point about wind! And that seems a very valid one. This will have to be explored a little bit more pronounced.
Good call!
I've taken newbies out on kayak and SUPs, and always have them practice falling off and re-boarding in chest-deep water before going into deep water. I've found rolling from belly to butt once up makes bringing legs on board much easier.
Great tips and that's a great way to introduce someone to the sport. Practice getting back on. 👏
When I was guiding we used stirrups with kayaks for heavy clients or clients with less upper body strength. Never thought of it for a SUP. Great application.
Ah awesome. Very cool to hear
You can use styrups on sailing dingies as well
the tail method is great when you're exhausted
I like the stirrup idea 😎👍🏻

Great video, thank you - I have struggled to get back on the board since starting paddling, had lessons and even done the BSUPA Ready to ride course but they could not pass me as I was unable to get back on - I have upper body strength but at 5' 2", busty and a tad overweight with a pfd it was impossible. So I went to a class in a swimming pool and found the way that suited me was to have a snake safety sling (25mm nylon tape) 4m long and I attached this to the middle handle then got to the end of the board holding on to the sling i pulled myself up with ease, straddling the end like a frog :) I havent tried with a belt pfd as that may be fine but the course required a full one to be worn - I am hoping once I have lost a little weight I will be able to climb aboard from the side but for now if this way saves me then I will continue to use it.
Hi Jeanette. Big thanks for sharing your self rescue technique. Great to know this works for you. Thanks, Beau
I do fast rivers and get back on using this method.
I use a 12 inch string attached from a D ring located behind the main carrying handle. The SUP in the video has handles which would also work, instead of a D ring.
I'm thin so my legs will not float which makes it impossible to get horizontal, so I have to get on from the back. My method to get back on the SUP is to use the leash to pull me toward the back, then push the paddle under the bungies at the front (although sometimes I just hold it on the board and get hold of the string with the paddle in my hands.) I grab the string, and pull myself toward the main carrying handle until I can make a lunge for it. Once the main handle is in my hand, getting back up is easy.
Wow! That's a great way to get back on your SUP. Thanks for sharing. Thanks, Beau
that was awesome
Glad you found this video useful! Thanks, Beau
I carry a paddle float. Handy in chop conditions.
Great tip Steve. Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Beau
The tip about preparing a rope as an underwater step is great!
Glad it is helpful
@@SUPboardermag The ‘Bowline Knot’ or the ‘Hanson Loop Knot’ are useful to prepare the loops for the step-rope, correct?
Do you have a specific knot tip?
Cheers buddy
Glad you found this video useful. Thanks, Beau
I don’t even have a sup yet but the stirrup idea is certainly one I will be giving a try.
Glad you liked the video. Cheers, Beau
The rope is an excellent tool!!! Practice 30 min a day!!! In and out it’s an incredible workout 😅
Yes it is a workout 😂.
I've tried a stirrup but my foot slipped right through it and it went half way up my calf and upended me. I was in quite a bad place luckily I managed to keep myself breathing until help got to me. Take care if you do that and make sure somebody is near by and the stirrup is loop is not too big!!
I have a rope running from the carry handle to the leash ring with some double figure of eight knots at intervals down on it. So now my highest rate of success is dragging my self up from the tail. Problem is then if I fail twice I am short of breath. I am 67 and my aerobic capacity is not what it was so supping was introduced to improve that. I am going to introduce some HITT now and some exercises to improve my flexibility. The SUP has improved my balancing ability no end. It's sneaky how nature takes away ability as you get older!
Hi Warren, Yeah using the stirrup does take practice and like you say not having it too big is key at start. I hope you keep improving and enjoying SUP. Thanks Reuben
Got a taste of that wind yesterday in a tidal river, board smacked in my face, should have watched this first 😂🌊
Ouch! Glad you found this video to help you next time. Thanks, Beau
Thank you for this. How long is the rope with the stirrup in. Can I buy one ready made? This will be great for hen I am getting tired especially.
Hi Sarah, the rope length is about 4 or 5 feet. I'm sure you could buy one ready made, but it would be more expensive. We bought some rope about 6 or 7 feet long and tied a loop in the end for the stirrup. Hope this helps and it will make it easier when getting tired. Thanks, Beau
Indeed. I think that approaching the aft of the board is not the easiest option. I have been thinking of approaching the board from a 15 or 20° angle of the stern of it. And taking it slower to get back onto the board is also something to consider. Something I will be practicing next Monday of the 15th August. At Clevedon Marine lake assuming that the problem with water clarity is resolved by the 12th of the month.
Oh yes - and although the main recommendation is barefoot for paddle boarding. The advice at the Clevedon Marine lake is to wear surf shoes when wading through the water. That will have to be taken in consideration of the doing so.
Right ! This is a update on the situation of practice of getting back onto the paddle board. The situation of the water clarity has resolved itself. My intention to do so! Is firmly back on track and hopefully on the 15th of this month I will be practicing the technique of getting back on the paddle board.
As previously mentioned. Since the advice of the authorities in the area of the Marine lake at Clevedon is to wear surf shoes in the lake ( to protect against crabs taking the chance of protests against the presence of feet on the bed of the marine lake by nipping at toes ) reluctantly the situation of this - makes these necessary to do so. So I will be wearing surf shoes for this reason. As a necessary measure. However that will be for the first half hour of the hour I will be hiring the board. Once having adequate capacity of reboarding the paddle board. If that's not possible to get these surf shoes off by this time. Then I will manage as is!
How did you go!? Interested to hear your progress. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.
@@SUPboardermag - Right! This is an update. Just gotten back home after a very successful achievement on two grounds. Firstly, I did do a practice reboarding of the paddle board at Clevedon Marine lake. I now know how to do it!
And secondly. I actually did stand up on the board for 8.912 seconds. That was 56% better than the first time on August 1st and again. That was an achievement on the second point. And I think that I may have forgotten the paddle. And once up. I should have kept paddling. Nonetheless a very good amount of progress with both instances.
Just one further thing to this. I will need to practice reboarding the board at least one or two times in the near future. Before the water chill begins to grow. And I might have to invest in a wetsuit as well! That will be my own self Christmas gift to myself this year. I have a pair of surf shoes available for that purpose as well. I will have to practice reboarding twice on the 10th September, before it gets too cold to do so! Afterwards I will be focused on Rollerskating for at least four times from the 17th September. To November of the third week of that month. I am also seriously considering getting my own paddle board from the 1st January. I'm exploring options for that. And between £200 to £400. That level at least guarantees a good board with 5 years of insurance with it. At the moment I am considering options. No full decision yet!
Hello again. I have deliberately tipped myself into the water to practice this at Clevedon Marine lake. Last year! I am going to do so again in this month of April. At Saltford. And practice it again.
River paddle boarding is a little bit different from the seaside. But I should be able to do it.
Great work Stephen
@@SUPboardermag Not quite.. It's being postponed until next month. River conditions was the main problem with my not getting the session. Despite some very considerable amount of research on river conditions. I could see that there was some limitations. And that has forced the postponement. It's put a hole in my waterline. And Canada geese scuppered it as well. Hmph! I have found that to be frustrating. Perhaps there's a good chance that I might finally get the sessions of River Paddle boarding - just a bit later than was expected.
Wishing you the best for when the conditions line up
Just a quick update on the plan for paddle boarding in the River Avon. - I have rebooked for the 13th of this month. Hopefully the conditions should have improved better than last month though the weather remains somewhat ambiguous. There's still a distinct likelihood of that being cancelled as well! I am hoping for a distinct improvement by next week on Tuesday. This remains somewhat ambiguous and even frustrating. If it happens again - I will re-evaluate and attempt to switch to Vobster Quay for June of this year. It may well have to be a day in the week. The best chance of getting there - and back - remains by bus services to Radstock and that place is 5 miles from there and 4 miles from Frome. Not the best option. But - fingers and toes crossed for that!
I have obtained a wetsuit, socks and boots. And a wetsuit T - Shirt. Hopefully this should suffice to protect against the cold water.. In theory..
Sounds good Stephen! All the best and hope you get on the water this week! Keep us updated.
I think a handle on the side of the board towards the back would be a big help. My rigid board is very easy to get back on because it is so much thiner.
Thinner boards really help to get back on. The more handles on the board the better, for sure. Thanks for the comment. Beau
I was practicing self rescues today and I just can't get on my 6" inflatable with my life jacket on but it's easy to do if I take the life jacket off(not a great thing to do in a real situation hah!). I'm going to try making a stirrup and see how that goes with the life jacket next time.
Yes it is a real issue. And a point not many people think about. Thanks Reuben
I fell right next to a rapid in a river and to avoid the rapid, i swam to the side of the river and grabbed to foliage to get back on my board. I was not wearing my PFD. I panicked and lost my paddle in the rapid. I was lucky to find it later. Not wearing my PFD was a mistake, specially in a river.
That sounds terrifying! We can all learn from our mistakes and I bet if I was in that situation, I would have let go of my paddle too. I've lost quite a few in the ocean when wiping out on waves. Thanks for sharing your experience. PFD is a must. Thanks, Beau
Good video
Thanks!
I tried for the first time yesterday, it was so difficult, I was as graceful as an elephant seal 🙂
😂 We all get better with practice and time. Keep it up! Thanks, Beau
hi, did you buy a special stirrup rope or just make one please ? I am struggling as only 5ft 3 to get back on my board, so think rope is way to go
Hi Lisa. We just made our own which is pretty easy. Just get some thick rope, tie one end in a loop and the other around the handle. Here's a quick how to on knot tying for the loop ruclips.net/video/t08sv0dD4us/видео.html
Will hopefully work for you. Thanks, Beau
I dont know if its because I gained some weight. But I've been suggested to "crawl" from the back of the board if I ever fell. Was pretty slippery. Luckily I am in pretty good shape even while being bulkier right now. I juste used the small ass hooks to pull myself up with my index fingers 😆. Next time ima definitely try from the side !
And btw I didnt even lose my sunglasses 😎
😉. Honestly, wherever you find it easiest to climb back on is fine. The side can be easier, but using any of the fittings on the board is super helpful. Thanks for the comment and sharing your experience. Beau
Glad I’ve come across this . I’m a large girl and can get on without float aid but soon as I put one of I can’t get back on it gets in the way so ended up buying a strap to put food in
Good thinking. Although PFDs are good for safety, if you can't get back on, then you have found a good solution. Thanks
im young, and have very long limbs at 6'4 so its pretty easy, but this method will def be helpful when im older
Great! Glad it could help. Thanks, Beau
The first time I fell was the second time I was out and it was in gator infested waters. I rushed a little faster then I should have. I got back on but yanked out a D ring in the process.
WOW that sounds dramatic. TBH the D ring shouldn't become unstuck. That should be warranted if the board is still within warranty? Thanks Reuben
Gator infested waters? Paddle boarding is supposed to be relaxing!
I guess If you live in a place where your choices are heavily invested verses lightly infested. Even so, I'll just jump on a skate board instead. Lol
I've seen where a Gator will come up out of the water and take someone in a boat down with them. I don't think a paddle board provides safety!
I'm new to SUPing. Got a 34" wide, 6" thick inflatable. Fell in my last two times on the water and cannot get myself back on despite trying these methods. I'm a 5"2 male so I am short. Not a particularly big chest/tummy, but it feels like my problem is my arms aren't long enough to reach to the center handle. Possibly my life vest is getting in the way too (I am in the process of replacing it with one that hopefully isn't as bulky). Anyway when I pull or lift myself onto the side of the board, it topples and flips over me. I have also tried from the back, but find myself unable to get a good enough grip to pull myself up from there. Watching these videos and seeing others do it successfully, I feel like somehow they are positioned higher above the surface of the water than I am. Not sure how that can be. Obviously I tried with my chest facing down into the water and legs kicking behind me.
Sorry to hear you are struggling to get back on. Have you tried the rope technique yet?
Buoyancy aids can hinder the process. It takes a bit of upper body strength to get back on and it's definitely not easy!
A technique we saw recently was to slide the handle of your paddle through the handle on the board, then climb up on the blade in the water to get back on. Might be worth a try?
Hope you can figure it out soon. Beau
@@SUPboardermag I finally was able to get onto my board this weekend. I was wearing my new vest so I assume that is what made the difference. Probably cuz it wasn't as bulky as my first vest. Anyway thanks for this video. I continued to follow all your techniques.
I will try the rope trick! I fall off veeeery often, and most of the times i try to get back i flip the board, get anxious and waste a lot of energy trying to get back until someone can hold the opposite side to avoir the flip.
Hopefully the rope trick works for you. It takes a bit of practice, but is very useful. Keep us updated on your progress. Thanks, Beau
Ive tried using my paddle as an outrigger. Paddle handle under the sup handle with paddle 90degrees over the water. Somewhere to hook a leg over. Danger is breaking paddle!
Ahh thats an interesting idea. We will give it a go. Thanks for the share.
Any tips to get a large dog back on board? My 70 lbs Chesapeake Bay Retriever wants to jump in, and its hard to get her back on unless I go to shore.
Ooh that's a tough one. Possibly getting off the board yourself to help heave her back on. Does she wear a lifejacket? Dog lifejackets have a handle which might help you next time. Glad you enjoy paddling with your pet! Thanks. Beau
You made me afraid to fall down. Some of us complete beginners were using sup for the first time and some of my friends just jumped into the water for fun and get back on their boards without knowing any techniques etc. I assumed it was piece of cake easy. Now i read your comments that it is not an easy task, so now i am afraid to fall in (and previously i was not, seeing how easy my newbie buddies got back on theirs)
Next chance you have with a paddle board, play with it at the edge of the shore. Get on, get off. Just Do it, Don't analyze, Bet it will just Happen. :) You Can Do It!
@@Birdzy100 i did many times, it is not super easy, but pretty easy with some small struggle. Maybe if you are fat, it may be more difficult
Don't be afraid to fall down. It's best to practice close to shore, and with a little practice, it can be very easy.

Do u have to be able to kneel on the paddle board before standing. As I can't bend my knee but want to learn paddle boarding x
I’m not sure, but I hope you get an answer! Boarding the paddle board may be a challenge without bending your knees. Balance may also be difficult.
It's best to learn how to control the board on your knees, and you will be needing to use your knees to get to the standing position. It can be done though on the right equipment. Ask your local SUP school for a lesson and mentioned your mobility, I'm sure they can help you experience paddling! Thanks and good luck, Beau
Where can I buy this rope? I don't have upper body strength :/
Best to make it yourself if you can. Cheap and easy
Nothing is scarier than falling off your board in the middle of the water, super far from shore where the water is super dark and cold. Been paddleing for a long time, and I ALWAYS panic. 😅❤
THIS is why I stick close to the shoreline 😅
I find it easy to get on again after a normal fall, that said I am arround 60kg and most of that is musclemass...
However, I managed to turn the wholenboard over 2 days ago, the top beeing in the water, including the drybag, and the fin sticking up...
After a short moment of panic I let myself be carried by the safety west thingy, grabed the fin, and the closer edge to me in the middle and pushed the middle away from me and the fin towards me and down... once the board was the right way up again, getting on was easy
.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Flipping the board back over can be quite tough, but you did very well 👍. Doing it from the tail is best. Thanks, Beau

Do you mean the PFD? It's the Palm Glide.
@@SUPboardermag yes , ı find on Google . Thamks 🙏
Should be able to fall off and hop back on without putting out my smoke
Look I'm fat, i run a Tower XPlorer, I have a old plastic coated stirrup, some marine line, and hook that to the handle, in the water you just get behind the board you can use the marine line to pull the board towards you, your foot in the stirrup in the water gives you something to push against(and helps pull the board under you). I'd never get on doing a side remount, this method hasn't failed this klutz. I legit just remount from the back of the board, I try and remember not to use my foot with the surf leash attached seems to make my life harder. I isup on Lake Superior, Huron and Michigan. And little tiny lakes around me.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing your experience and tools you use to get back on your SUP. We've heard so many different ways to get back on, I think it's time for a new video! Keep up the paddling. Thanks, Beau

The sideways way is much more easier than getting on again from the back, that is my experience!
Thanks for sharing your experience. Beau
A stirrup lined with a piece of pvc pipe is the way to go for us big blokes , also getting back on from the tail if best.
You could try nylon tape. As its flat your feet tend not to slip on it. Some kayak instructors carry them. I do if teaching adults.
I made one years ago for sea kayaking , I used an electrical 90 degree elbow PVC fitting which has a curve built in to better fit your foot.
All great ideas and comment guys. We just used an old dog lead!
I have a new board, and my center handle after I got up, have a tear, I would not recomended….
We have heard of this happening to a few boards. If your board is still under warranty this could possibly be a warranty claim. It is hard to get back on the board without using the handle which could become a safety concern for you. Speak to the board manufacture or shop where you purchased the board from. Hope you resolve this soon. Thanks, Beau
How cold is the water since the guy is using a suit?
Water temp is around 15C here.
@@SUPboardermag That's kinda cold when you will be in the water for a while.

Simply some helpful techniques for those that find it difficult to climb back on their board, which is a very common difficulty. Thanks
I'm too heavy my board keeps flipping.
Hi, Have you tried climbing on from the back of the board? Thanks Reuben
Thanks for the tutorial (in the name of the peoples:)), but could you show this done by a woman with huge tits?
Nice that you cover the PFD problem, it almost make it as difficult to get back, but we can always remove the PFD, but girls can't really remove the breasts, and especially not while in the water and trying to get back on the board.
I saw women with smaller breasts struggle with getting back to the board, but someone with really big ones, especially if they have a PFD vest on, it looked almost impossible.
I like the helper rope idea, I'll try it, but if you have any useful idea for the goddesses out there, they sure would appreciate it. :)
Great feedback and we are discussing this with our team. We agree that is a problem for women with large busts and hope to share more awareness. Thanks, Beau
For SUP SAFETY ist an absolute NoNo to hold on to the middle bar with one hand and with the other hand on the end of the board. Thats just the perfect way to make your board turn over on you. I teach this kind of things and i always teach NEVER grab the middle handle. The Better AND safer solution is to place your hands onto the board and push yourself up on one side of the rail. The Flip-Over is with two people NOT alone. I cant recommend the third method with the rope. Its MUCH more useful to train to get back on your board in a safe space. Its a question of the right techique.
When pushing all your weight on one side rail, surely that would tip the board more than holding the handle in the middle? These techniques work well for many paddlers, but its great to hear there are other techniques to get back on your board. Thanks for the insights
My best friend has always been 2.5 feet of water
😂 that's the safest way! Thanks, Beau
For presentation purposes, you shall ask someone struggling, high, a bit bigger person.
Thanks for the feedback. 👍
I tried this and the whole board flipped over....
That is something that can happen. If you can keep your weight in the centre then it is helpful. We re looking to do another video soon with extra tips and ways to climb on. Thanks, Beau
