Steel Force Review, Dorney Park | Underrated Morgan Hyper Coaster
HTML-код

- Cedar Fair built 3 Morgan hyper coasters in the late 1990s in Wild Thing, Steel Force, and Mamba. Two of the three are disappointing. Steel Force is the exception. This Morgan roller coaster is the star attraction at Dorney Park and an underrated airtime machine.

My first hyper. Still holds a soft spot with me even if it isn't as good as the others.
It was my first too!
Same here. Just went back yesterday with my cousin for the first time in years, and I swear it's better than I remember. There was a lot more air time than I remember. Sure it's not Nitro or Candymonium, but it's still fun.
@@MrFooFoo14 I just went to Dorney today and got a lot of rides on Steel Force, many of which were the best I've ever had! It was running pretty well in the morning with nearly empty trains but naturally got better throughout the day, especially as the crowds filled up the trains. By evening, it was tearing through the course and the airtime in car 1 row 3 was fantastic, especially on the returning bunny hills! I can understand how to some people it feels like the mid course slows the train down more later in the day but that's because trains are running faster than they are in the morning. However, the finale still feels faster later on with more intense airtime.
Anyway, I had tons of great rides on Steel Force in the front and back today and I'm thrilled to see it running so well in it's 25th season! It may be more basic than a lot of Intamin and B&M's hypers, but it also has a feel that those coasters don't. I can marathon it whenever I visit Dorney and never get tired of it.
Also my first hyper!! live 20 mins away from dorney park
@@MrFooFoo14 candy is overrated! way too short and it has a couple good airtime moments it's just too short!
It's crazy how fast the return run is on Steel Force even when the midcourse is trimming a considerable amount. I can't imagine how crazy all Morgans would run if they ran trimless. I've seen footage of Wild Thing running trimless and while it cuts out after the tunnel and before the final two bunny hills, there's already seemingly strong ejector on the hills leading up to it and you can see sparks when the train reaches the final brake run.
I love that video.
I rode this its first year of operation, and it still feels the same, very high quality ride, 👌 fun to re-ride, comfortable, fast.
Dorney should do a night where they give trim free rides for enthusiasts.
I agree it's still fun.
A trimless ride on this would be insane. I'm not sure at what point "ejector" turns into "full-throttle launched" but it would happen here.
I knew I wasn’t the only one who likes this ride! You’re right, the airtime on the return trip is super strong. I actually prefer the front row because the airtime is a lot stronger on the hills at the beginning of the ride. From my experience, you just get pulled over in the back. I may need some more re-rides though. Good thing this is my home Cedar Fair park
It's underrated.
I’ve always heard mixed things about the cedar fair Morgan hypers, but now I can see why cuz it depends on how much the mid course trims
It stinks the ride can be made or broken by that mid-course but it's a reality.
@@CanobieCoaster yeah that sucks, im excited to hopefully ride steel force in the fall tho
I love how this coaster looks when you are at that gas station near the park
It really catches your eye!
Never a bad ride on Steel Force. In high school around 07-09 my friends and I rode every seat and took notes which are now long gone. Even with two great B&Ms and a new Intamin, Steel Force made us feel like kings of the world. We also got to ride Laser, the old Schwarzkopf which we also liked.
Nice!
I appreciate how you consider the entire experience- logo, signage, the ride itself... I agree that makes a difference. 👍🏻 I like Steel Force. This coaster reminds me of a modern (at the time) successor to Magnum. Unfortunately, the trade-off for designing the profile so smoothly is engineering out the defining characteristics of Magnum's charm- its pure, raw airtime. Steel Force is a fun coaster worth riding, but a complete juxtaposition to the Intamin designs that follow in the next two years.
Thanks! I'm actually torn if I prefer Steel Force to Magnum after my most recent rides on both. Magnum has the stronger airtime, but I think the airtime on Steel Force is more enjoyable with those restraints.
From lapping Steel Force during Coasting for Kids events, I gained an appreciation for the airtime that the ride has to offer. It just gets overshadowed by other rides.
Nice!
Ahh yes...one of the many new credits I was supposed to get in June.
I've always felt on the fence about Steel Force because I hear mixed things. I've also thought it looks like maybe just a not as great version of Magnum with a midcourse. I'm glad to hear the midcourse doesn't do much though and I look forward to trying this for myself.
Hopefully you can make it onto Steel Force in the future and the mid-course continues to stay off.
For whatever it's worth, I've ridden Steel Force and Magnum XL and I think steel force it better. MXL felt old and bumpy...SF is far smoother and keeps the pace up better imo 😅
I love Steel Force, I have a soft spot for it also because it was my first hyper coaster. I still remember riding it when I was 12 years old and getting increasingly nervous going up that slow lift hill. I had never been on anything close to 200 ft before. At the end of the ride, I couldn't wait to get back in line! I think you gave this a very fair rating, it deserves it. Idk why people call it forceless, I've always found it very thrilling and full of Gs. It runs very consistently too which I like. I do notice that it runs slower in the morning like most coasters as opposed to later in the afternoon with full trains. But I've never seen the trims murder the speed.
The only way I see someone getting a bad ride is if the mid courses bites like Mamba or Wild Thing. Steel Force was my first hyper too.
@@CanobieCoaster Right, but I've never heard anyone say that it hit that hard. I've ridden this coaster so many times too and never felt like the mid course murdered the speed. The only time I've ever seen something happen is the one time I've seen them run all 3 trains. The ride operators accidentally dispatched the train in the station before the train running the course had cleared the mid course brakes and I guess that's a no no. It stopped the lift hill and it also brought the train running the course to a complete stop on the mid brakes. I had no idea they were capable of completely stopping a train but I guess that's a block zone. The ride broke down and everything.
Great news regarding steel force from my experience at the pass holder preview for Iron Menace, the rumors of a new control panel were true, you crest the lift hill way faster, carry some more speed throughout, and the trims are noticeably dialed back, I felt like I was getting true ejector on those last hills!
That's fantastic!
Candymonium is one of the best Hypers out there and that thing is going to live on for a long time and is still one of Hershey Parks most popular coasters just like Steel Force
I prefer Candymonium, but Steel Force is good too.
One of my favorite coasters! Was my first “big kid ride” will always hold a special place in my heart
It was my first hyper.
Rode Steel Force in late June this year and got a back row ride that blew my mind. Steel Force > Magnum XL-200 and I've ridden Magnum more times than any other coaster.
Nice!
That mid course break-run didn’t even slow down the train when I rode it and I got ejector airtime on the final hills, and I can agree that this is an underrated Morgan hyper
That's awesome!
Mamba is flying through its MCBR this year. Airtime for days, superb ride.
I heard it started running faster last year.
I would do anything to get a trimless ride on Wild Thing. That coaster has so much potential to be a great ride, but the trims destroy it
The old video showing a trimless ride looks crazy!
Got to ride this recently and even with the midcourse trims, it hauls during the return run, the floater is crazy. (Last time i visited, the chain-lift seemed a lot faster than usual)
I've heard the mcbr is trimming even less this year.
My homepark well one of. Steel Force is amazing. Yea its a tammer hyper but yes it is a Airtime machine! But I love how they kept and redid the trains and kept the car style trains
I've heard it's running faster in 2024 as a bonus.
@@CanobieCoaster it is! The turnaround helix has more force
This is my first hyper coaster just went to Dorney last week this is so underrated.
Such a great coaster.
I agree with everything you have to say. Mamba and Mild Thing are very tame rides. Steel Force runs so well!
It really is shocking how much better Steel Force is than the others.
Another tid bit, Possessed isn't listed on the rides app or on the map on the dorney app. Safe to say it's as good as gone. I miss it in it's original form.
@@Uncle_Nate Considering the plans originally submitted to the town for that new wood coaster showed Possessed gone, I'm not surprised. I definitely miss when it ran with the holding brake.
@@Uncle_Nate luckily i was just at dorney yesterday and possessed was still there and running, judging by the giant empty plot of land where stinger used to be it doesnt rlly look like theres even a need to get rid of it. If they do i will be very upset so i rode it as many times as possible for my coming vlog!!
I had a good experience With Steel force I rode in the front and back positions on the trains the back was the most of good experience I got a decent amount of blood or airtime and laterals and coming by the mid coast break those bunny hills were awesome
Decent amount of blood?
I think Steel Force gets put under the radar because of the recent growth of hypercoasters. Nitro at Six Flags is nearby and so is Candymonium at Hersheypark. Both are smoother and offer a more advanced ride experiences. Steel Force is a product of its time and no longer feels like a top tier coaster to most coaster enthusiasts.
I agree it's no longer a top tier coaster but it's still a lot of fun.
Lmfao @ not mentioning the goat hyper that is right nearby...🤦🏻♂️😆
But it is long! and it is good!
I was at Dorney on a day when I was getting Zen rides on everything, but they were still running two trains on every coaster! Steel force is an underrated gem! Mamba should be running nearly trimless now due to the 1 train ride cycle that they set up, and then kept after the other trains returned.
Dorney really cares about capacity.
Drove past this a few years ago, but it wasn't open.
It has a great location!
This is my daughter's favorite ride. Never been in the middle ww always ride either front row or the very back. I get forced to ride it it 5 or 6 times everytime we go lol. Not really forced I enjoy it as well and dorney is never super crowded so it makes the coasters alot of fun but hydra is my personal favorite.
That's where I ride it too.
From my experience of the Cedar Fair Morgan Hypers, Steel Force trims the least (maybe taking away 40% of the speed), Wild Thing is in the middle (70% of the speed) and Mamba trims the most (85% of the speed)
True!
Magnum xl 200 was my first but I am going to ride steel force soon
Have fun!
Its interesting that the higher tier cedar fair parks get B&M Hypers.
The lower tier Cedar fair parks get Morgan Hypers.
The Mid tier Cedar fair parks get no hypers.
Intresting Cedar Fair Intresting.
I think it had to do with when the parks were acquired.
@@CanobieCoaster The Morgan hypers are all at original Cedar Fair parks (not ex-Paramount). I believe the chain wanted a hyper at all their parks after the success of Magnum XL-200 at Cedar Point, and they installed them at all but 2 of their parks. Knotts doesn't have the land, and Michigan's Adventure was acquired after the Morgan hypers were built. The B&M hypers all went to ex-Paramount parks. These parks also got the B&M gigas just a few years later.
I visited Dorney Park in 2000 so there was no Hydra or Talon yet. I think I spent most of my time on Thunder Hawk, being a fan of vintage coasters. I rode Steel Force multiple times. I rode Lazer once. It was smooth but very intense. I rode Hercules once too and that was enough of that.
I missed Hercules. That was gone by the time I visited.
Wild Thing at Valleyfair is my home coaster so I've been riding it for years and know what it was like before they went so far on the mid course brake run. I wonder why they decided to go full force on those brakes.
Wasn't there a bump a few years ago?
What do you mean when you say a bump?
I have not been on any of the Morgan Hyper Coasters. The coaster that I view as most similar to these that I have ridden is Desperado at Buffalo Bills. I always heard that Wild Thing was the worst of the 3 and the other 2 were pretty good.
I've always gotten trimmed to a stop on Mamba so I'm not a fan of that one either.
Steel Force is my favorite coaster that I've ever been on!
Nice!
The ejector airtime you fly up and bang back down on the seat it’s pretty wild
Especially on the return run!
And the restraints didn’t even touch me and I was sure I was gonna fall out if I didn’t hold on for life
my first steel coaster. I remember my mom going "oh my ass there goes my ass" over all those returning airtime hills which had me cracking up as a 10 year old
They're great.
What do you think about the mid course brake run and the return airtime hills on Steel Force, Mamba, and Wild thing?
The return run is good on Steel Force. Wild Thing and Mamba trimmed harshly when I rode them, which made the return run weak. I've heard Mamba doesn't trim now though.
Steel Force is more comparable to Magnum than to the other morgans. The airtime in the second half is great, I think Talon is the best coaster in the park though.
I agree it's far stronger than the other 2 Cedar Fair Morgan hypers.
What are the differences between "overrated" and "underrated"?
Which roller coasters did you like more, the overrated ones or the underrated ones?
Overrated are ones that I think get more praise than deserved. Underrated are ones not appreciated enough. It depends which I prefer.
Still to this very day its the best coaster at dorney! The drops!! Iron menaces first drop might trump it but after that everything else pales in comparison
It's my favorite there as well.
What is the purpose of killing the ride in mid course brake run? Why would a park want to do that? Is it a design flaw that makes running the train a little faster into the final brake run dangerous?
Maintenance is a bad reason.
How many hyper coasters do you think they were flawed, from Arrow, from Morgan, or from B&M?
I like most hypers.
The drop is more important than the height; so if Steel Force is 5' shorter it's because it doesn't use height to cheat in the drop stats category. Also; the term "shorter" usually refers to either length of track or duration; NOT less tall above ground; but sine both length and duration of Mamba and Steel Force are Identical, I went out onto a limb to assume you were referring to height when you mentioned "shortness". Wild Thing is indeed a smaller coaster (albeit ever so slightly smaller as it has a drop that's 11' less and a shorter length too.) But if Mamba slowed down in the MCBR when you rode it it's likely because you rode it the day the MCBR's trims slowed the train down; Steel Force might do the same things on other days where you weren't there; as Red Force and Mamba are LITERALLY identical roller coasters. However: I'll give Red Force more priority over Mamba for your reasons; otherwise how could I decide? Last word: I think I'd like Steel Force better than Max XL-200 (Which while not only have I never ridden any Morgan coaster I realize Max X-200 isn't a Morgan coaster but is still often compared to Steel Force; or Pepsi Max The Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in England). Of those three Steel Force is the only one I've not ridden but I still think is the best of the three. Great video, Thanks for posting!
Thanks! I know it's possible the trim on Mamba could hit harder some days than others (same for Steel Force), but I've never had an issue with the one on Steel Force over 5-6 different visits over the years. Mamba's hit hard in both my visits to Worlds of Fun.
@@CanobieCoaster I meant to say Steel Force every time I said Red Force; I've corrected that error.
I rode this today! I rode in the back, and greyed out during the helix section!
Nice!
What do you think about Steel Force in smoothness? Do you like all of Steel Force?
Yes it's smooth and fun in all rows.
I had ERT on Steel Force and in the back the last bunny hills gave the Steel Eel effect
Nice!
update regarding Mamba at worlds of fun as of 2022 : The mid-course brake run has been SIGNIFICANTLY reduced making the ride MUCH better :D
Awesome!
which seat would you reccommend? or do you think they are all good?
I'd try both the front and back.
My wife and I were part of the Guinness Book record setting consecutive zombies on a coaster night at Dorney…. Everyone’s makeup was done well and there were a shitton of people!
Cool!
Better than Intamin hypers?
I'd take it over Ride of Steel, but not a majority of them.
Quick question: what row should I sit for this ride?
Front or back are great.
Very underrated IMO
Yes
The difference in the mid-course between the 3 Cedar Fair Morgans is striking.
Very true!
Is the drop scary or fun? Or is it like a mix cause im scared of heights and it seems a little fearing
It's fun. If you're nervous, ride it towards the front and the drop is less intense.
@@CanobieCoaster ok thanks im scared of heights kind of and the only drop coaster ive been on is thunderhawk
The restraints made me feel like I was gonna fallout
I like how free they are.
airtime buffet
Absolutely is!
The another one is Magnum from Cedar Point....
It has a lot of similarities.
Sucks that wild thing is trimmed to death, that airtime does look good!
The video of trimless Wild Thing looks amazing.
can you review a roller coaster at sfog
I should have enough photos to do Twisted Cyclone I believe.
The best!
It's a great ride.
Restraints on this coaster make it 5x better.
Yes
Review Wild thing and Mamba
I intend to review Mamba at some point.
I was FORCED to ride this when I was like ten and it ruined coasters for me.
I'll ride wooden ones and enjoy them, and I've even found a few non wooden coasters I actually enjoy... But they are very few and far between. I won't ride anything with these kind of heights or higher
Oh no!
If those are the same trains as the West Coaster than they're comical how bulky they are.
Yes they are. Same restraints too.
If you sit in the back you get pulled through the first drop
Yes
That's the best way to experience the drop IMO. You get yanked off the mid course brake run too. The long trains really give different ride experiences front to back. The front has some great airtime pops over the first two camel back hills but the back offers some wild dives going down many of the hills.
The only Morgan Hyper Coaster I love is Phantom’s Revenge I’ve only ridden this and Phantom’s Revenge
That one feels unlike the others and is awesome.
Do a review on Thunderhawk next as there aren’t any reviews on that coaster yet.
I only got a few rides on it, so I would prefer to get more before making a full review. It's a decent ride!
Thunderhawk is so bad I never liked it
@@ThrillsofColdplay I wanted to try steel force for the first time but I actually did Thunderhawk and after Thunderhawk made me scared to go on steel force 😭😭
I want to ride this one day to see how different it feels compared to a B&M hyper.
It definitely feels different because of the restraints.
I would say it's about as smooth as a B&M but you feel like you're sitting more inside the trains instead of on top like on the B&M trains. The restraints however have more give to them so you can get some strong airtime on it. It's definitely worth riding. The best time is in the afternoon with a full train as you'll have the most momentum throughout the ride but it still runs pretty consistently regardless. Night rides on Steel Force are also fantastic as it's very dark which really makes you feel like you're tearing through the course.
@@mhtube01 Awesome!
It's not quite as smooth as, say, Candymonium down the street, but for a ride that's more than a quarter century old, it's rides very well.
@@tentenchu8140 Nice!
What means "as a whole"?
Overall
Can u do a hydra review
I will eventually, but have some other lists queued up for January.
Somewhat looks similar to Magnum XL200
It does.
steel dragon has no slow stop either
I love that one!
Great review! I got similar rides to you.
Great!
This is basically magnum but built by morgan
Yes it is.
I didn't get the airtime you described.
Did the mid-course bite hard?
I prefer Talon to Steel Force but it's close.
I prefer airtime. Hence Steel Force.
This is defently underrated steel force gives good airtime.
It's way better than the 2 other Cedar Fair Morgans.
@@CanobieCoaster ikr
morgan giga when
Steel Dragon is basically this ride, but supersized.
7:18 I see that triangle hill
It reminds me of Magnum there.
Is steel force better than mako?
Not for me. Mako's airtime is stronger and the ride feels a lot faster.
Yep
It looks like they designed their coasters in planet coaster lol
Lol
pls can you re ride in 2023 they made the coaster trimness
I may wait until next year for the new coaster.
@@CanobieCoaster ok understandable
Im a big coaster fan and been on so many however I give this coaster 1 out 10 the ride is complete shit dorney park as a whole 1 star for clean park
I've always gotten good rides on this one.
1:03 "a 74 măëąl per hour max speed"
Lol
wild thing doesn't look 207 feet
It looks pretty tall against the skyline.
I've only got one thing to say the other cedar fair parks will always be better than dorky park lol 😂
Dorney is good for what it is. It has a nice ride lineup and never has any lines (on the dry park).
Did you hear Steel Force had the mid course brake run dialed back or trimming in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024?
It was lessened in 2024.
What did you hear about the mid course brake run on Steel Force in 2024?
Heard it is trimming very lightly.
