  • Dorney Park is the northeast's Cedar Fair park. Located in Allentown, Pennsylvania, this amusement park has been around for nearly 140 years. The park still has some classic rides plus modern day coasters, some fun flat rides, and the popular Wildwater Kingdom water park. And I think it may be the most underrated Cedar Fair park. Find out why in this review!

Glad to see Dorney finally get some love. Though I'm guilty as anyone else, this should technically be my "home park" since it is geographically closest to where I live, but like you I find myself visiting the other 3 regional parks more often, plus the Jersey boardwalks. Nevertheless, I think it still gets too much slander because let's be honest, there are countless parks and cities that *wish* they could have this coaster/ride lineup (OKC/Denver comes to mind with Frontier City and Elitch Gardens). If I could add anything, it would be a GCI akin to Prowler and Renegade, because honestly that alone would put this park above WoF and VF, in my opinion.

Glad to see it getting more love. Being the closest park to me, I've always loved it but like you said, only caring about the dry rides makes it only a half day park. With Iron Menace being introduced to bring on a new era of coasters for Dorney, I really hope it takes off and becomes a bigger place and be an actual competitor for Hershey and Great Adventure so they can all push each other. I sadly never got to ride Stinger but I'm excited for IM

I hear a lot of reviewers knocking Hydra as weak and underwhelming, but I gotta say it was a blast. The inversions are buttery smooth and the timing is nicely done. Youre not getting flung out of one inversion straight into another still disoriented from the previous two. And Steel Force is a great intro to Hypercoasters as im pretty sure its on the smaller side compared to something like Millenium Force at Cedar Point. Im glad to have such an awesome little park in my backyard. 10/10, highly recommend.

Talon was my first ever inverted coaster and it was back when they were doing the on-ride POV system so I have a video of me sobbing on the lift hill and laughing back to the station because I ended up loving it. I think that was the start of my coaster obsession as well as Twister at Knoebels when I was 6 being my first 'big girl' coaster because now I can't get enough!

Dorney is my home park, and I'm so excited that it finally got a brand new coaster, it definitely deserves something as awesome as Iron Menace. Plus the fact that they themed it to Bethlehem's Steel Stacks to pay homage to the region is *chef's kiss.* It's definitely a dozen steps up from Stinger, which I only rode once during the five years it was at the park because it was getting stuck on the lift hill or breaking down. The ride itself also was not very comfortable. I still miss Laser, a portable Schwarzkopf coaster, but I look forward to the day when I can track it down in the German fair circuit where it is currently operating as Test Track.
Unfortunately, Dorney is extremely land-locked and also has strict municipal height restrictions, so I don't see Cedar Fair building up the coaster line-up extensively in the future. I think they could invest in beautifying and adding shade to the opening plaza since the front and back of the park do not feel particularly cohesive. It could also use a few additional family coasters - a Vekoma SFC or some sort of mine train would be great here. I would love to see a modern wooden coaster added one day, but something would likely have to be removed for it to happen. I'd hate for Thunderhawk to be removed since it has sentimental value to me but last time I rode it, it was running rough. It could probably benefit from some retracking, taking the trims off before the bunny hills, and doing something about the god awful ending brake that gives you a gut punch every time. And as much as I love RMC, I'd argue that Thunderhawk is such a classic that it needs to stay wooden, especially since it's the only woodie in the park.

I definately love Demon Drop and their terrain based log flume. They have a solid coaster lineup, I actually prefer Steel Force to Candymonium which I know that's an unpopular opinion but that is my opinion. I will say, however, as a park Dorney feels way too corporate. If your "classic" woodie doesn't use single position lap bars it generally looses the classic feel (Comet at Great Escape is an exception to this being that the individual ratcheting lap bars literally cannot lower to where I wouldn't get airtime. Thunderhawk is no exception to my statement though). If your food stands are all pre-made frozen food or chains that's an overly corporate route. Let's also mention the lack of shade. Dorney has a lot more potential than is agknowleged but it needs some work to get there.

I was able to get the kiddie credit, a zen ride, in 2019. That first visit was a Saturday, so it drew a huge crowd, but lines were manageable thanks to the waterpark. My 2nd visit was last year on a July weekday, and there were several school groups, so just bad luck there, but lines still weren't too bad. Most school group days at other parks produce much longer lines.
I would warn people about how long it can take to get out of the parking lot. Those school groups were already gone at the end of the day, so there were very few cars left, but it still took about 45 minutes to get out the parking lot. That was a bad final impression, but I do like their ride lineup.

even though i'm somewhat closer to great adventure, dorney's pretty much been my home park for years now. i've been pretty scared of roller coasters for most of my life, but this past summer i rode every coaster there and it was great!
    - steel force is definitely my favorite, the airtime is great and i love the sense of speed on the helix too
    - talon is a rather close second, it's fun, forceful, and perfectly smooth
    - hydra is unfortunately kinda forceless on the whole, but like you said, the first drop is pretty good and the jojo roll is REALLY good
    - possessed is a lot of fun too, though i do wonder what it would be like with the holding brake (whenever i get to valleyfair i gotta ride steel venom to find out)
    - i never got much out of thunderhawk but it's still pretty cool to have a 99-year old roller coaster still going strong. i'll have to try the front row next time like you recommended
    - wild mouse is pretty much what you'd expect, but if you haven't ridden it yet be ready for the brake at the end! it can hit pretty hard
but yeah, i love dorney and i can't wait to get back there next month

I mentioned before that Pennsylvania has tons of venerable attractions with eclectic rides like the Whips, Jack Rabbit, Thunder Bolt, etc. Yep! I'm a sucker for that great ride signage. Hydra's JoJO roll is soooo "trippy" I ran the 2nd gen Free Fall while SFoTX had 1st gen. "Ours" was more reliable + fun to work. There IS a reason the backs of the cars say DO NOT TOUCH! Those brake fins WILL cause painful burns If you tried to touch them. We would throw water from cooler on them when a guest would ask. It "flashes into steam!" The guest would be wide eyed. LOL! Those 3 long brakes were water cooled. A fail safe brake is closed hydraulically. It will never "over run" & shoot of the track.

Oh fun fact being a local! Hercules was torn down for being too rough but another main contributor was that on the downhill section of the drop it went into the small pond/lake behind the park and the pylons inside were beginning to sink in to due the train hitting that corner as hard as it was.

Dorny Park is one of my local parks for my area, Philadelphia region. Dorny has been over shadowed for a decade now. They are up against two giants, Six Flags Great Adventure, the second Six Flags flag ship parks and Hersheypark where Hersheypark has been full force in expansion and improvements. Before Dorny Park was taken over by Cedar Fair, it was nothing more then a run down older park. But since Cedar Fair did the take over it has drastically improved. But now. I feel the park is like in this stagnant phase. Cedar Fair really needs to give this park some more love and add new attractions. It tries to find a niche in it's market by kind of being a medium sized park that has a little bit of everything the surrounding parks offer (Knoebels, Sesame Place/Dutch Wonderland, Great Adventure/Hershey), but that's also where Dorney falls short the most: No Vision. Dorney Park is my home park (15 minutes away) and I will always Love & Support it. I feel if it gets that one large scale coaster it will put it back on the radar for the GP and enthusiasts. The GG shuttle coaster would be great. You can market it because no other park in the area has it. Plus I would not mind at all a large scale GCI like Mystic Timbers something to give El Toro a runs for it's money.

I've been here, and I have to agree that it gets knocked due to the nearby competition. I think the waterpark always gets the lion's share of crowds, particularly on hot days. I actually don't think the Gravity Group shuttle coaster is a good idea. I'd prefer a regular GCI, or something from RMC, whether it's a ground-up I-box, or raptor. All of these would have better capacity, and I think have more potential for being a true standout.

Ahh Dorney Park started as a Fish Hatchery first and over the years turned into an Amusement park and the So called Highway was just a side road that went through the original park entrance nothing major. Watching the park grow over the years to reading what the internet says isn't fully true as I live close enough to know what's going on in the park for the last 54 years as I'm older than just can't remember everything.
Things you may Not know or find online
Mark Twain had a House on the hillside of the old Entrance into Dorney field in 1908 Allentown Records can tell that's True. The Whip and Zephyr train ride are the oldest original rides in the park to this day the Rockets was the Oldest of them all taken out in the early 90's. Wildwater Kingdom was home of Dorney Parks Racetrack removed in the early 80's where Iconic Legend Shirley Muldowney raced at one time before starting in Drag Racing and becoming known as the Fastest Moving Women on Ground. Dorney park originally had the Largest Public swimming pool near the old Laser Steel double loop Coaster near the West end of Possessed Coaster in all of the United States for over 40 years which later was filled in and became a Zoo. 2 Movies were ever filmed in Dorney park first being the 1967 "Where Angles go Trouble Follows" which show a lot of the rides that still are there to this day and Main Clown Entrance you can see the Rockets in the movie as there near Journey to the Center of Earth water ride the Rockets are a Swinging passenger pods, and second being 1988 "Hairspray" movie starring Ricki Lake. The Thunderhawk Original Wooden Yellow Coaster chain hill was built on angle on purpose do to the 1930's Trolley Line that use to run underneath the Coaster. Lot of the old rides Knoebels Amusement Park in PA bought.
