You da Man! Love/Hate running in the Lower Keys. If the boat engine is in gear, 100% focus on the water, the electronic charts and iPad or paper chart resting in my lap. There are always “shortcuts” you will see others run but if not personally 100% confident, “go the long way”. Same thing I have done fishing in Canadian waters I know even better. This Rule has kept me safe for 30+ years. Another Rule I have is never “explore” on a falling Tide. Last Rule I’ll mention as I have sometimes “chickened out” taking a shortcut is always having enough fuel so you can always “go around”. That has relieved the pressure and my concerns multiple times. This is awesome, I just stumbled across your channel and subscribed. Thinking about coming down for the power boat races, trailing to Miami and then splashing the boat and running down the keys. The wave forecast isn't great for outside, can coming down the inside be done by someone who has never been there, are there routes/charts you might recommend? Sorry for tons of questions. Great videos, thanks for being so thorough. I think the wind/wave forecast is cancelling the trip, but I'd be willing to pay for route guidance if that was something you're looking to offer.
@jesse7563 - Thanks for watching. It always get windy down here during the fall/winter, but this year has been ridiculous and the forecast isn't looking good. You can definitely run the inside as a first timer - everyone has to do it a first time. However, there are tons of people that make the run for the boat races. You can probably find plenty of boaters to follow. That said I love using the Top Spot water proof charts for initial planning, then use that information to plug into my GPS. You can also search online, people sell their gpx files in specific routes to go straight into your gps. Email me at keith@lowerkeysliving.com and I can send you some more detailed information.

You mentioned hiring one to navigate some fishing areas in the back country. Hopefully someone that can come on my boat for the day and help me out. Will you be around that area this April?
