@@scottrushforth i responded to this earlier. i was speaking on this specific night in this video. i am aware of the bloooing tradition being older than 2016
Favorite part of that reaction is the crowd trying to get a groundswell by chanting for them to have a “march off” for the title. Lol....not how it works folks.
I want to cry with them as I know how it feels to win something for once. Although it was a normal competition, it was my first normal year and we finally won something.
2014 has to be the most iconic year honestly. Great shows that are still recognizable. Legit usually on awards night there's two iconic moments, but in 2014 they had two unforgettable moments (Bluecoats getting 2nd and Blue Devils creating an unbeatable record... to this day of course)
The crowd reaction is what I will always remember in my life (and what I miss most) win or lose, 1st or 5th place....being overwhelmed with joy, or total disappointment, nothing like it.
MY favorite, and I was there, was 2019 when Crocker just said "Blue-" knowing damn well what he was doing to us. That, combined with the way he announced 2016 (was also there for), I just think he doesn't like the Bluecoats lmao
Crown winning felt like a turning point for the activity. It was the first time a corps outside of BD, Cadets, Phantom, and Cavies won since SCV in 99, and before that Star in 91. It also felt like Crown’s design and talent would soon dominate the activity and this would be the first of many titles…
Should have 1981 broadcast (Scouts win DCI 10th celebration at DCI Midwest since Montreal was not televised) and the "Seismic Shift" in 1988 when the Scouts performance AND win made the crowd LOUDER than a Chiefs game at Arrowhead
First tie for a caption award was in 1980. We (Spirit of Atlanta) tied Bridgemen for the Sanford Award for High Percussion. (19.2) so the judges had to gather and decide how to break the tie. Their decision was to use the general effect score to break the tie which gave the trophy to the Bridgemen. We of course thought they should have used the execution score to break the tie, which would have given the trophy to us. Oh well. Memories.
Not really. 'Outright' doesn't mean sole or alone, it means total and/or complete . They didn't get half a title in 1996, they shared the honor with BD. 2008 was their first and only sole title.
I will go to my grave thinking that 87-89 should've been SCV/SCV/Regiment 'course, I also think 84 should've been BD, but I MIGHT be a tad biased there!
I also seem to remember 2015 finals also getting a massive reaction. That close BD-Crown 1st place was probably one of the few times I felt in recent years that was a rough announcement. Both corps killed it in the final weeks and that was a tight finish.
Yup, I was there that night. The crowd didn't like it. I was pulling heavily for Crown, and I loved that show, but I do feel like the judges made the right call. Still a fantastic show.
@@luckystiff5695 That's why I was simply disappointed. I'd seen both corps earlier in the season and about halfway through Crown's performance on finals night I got the sinking feeling it wasn't going to be enough. I'm not a judge, and I don't tend to get behind the whole " got shafted by the judges!" stuff. I was actually really excited for the Bluecoats when I saw just how close they were to second. I'd wanted them to win the title for so long. Inferno will remain among my favorite shows.
The crowd reaction I specifically remember was in 2022, when Crocker said "Receiving the silver medals..." *audience goes wild* "...come on now..." when Bluecoats and Boston tied for 2nd after already having done so in semis.
Cool vid thanks! But yeah 88 Scouts has to be in there (even though I think SCV should’ve won that year...both were brilliant). Probably other than the phantom wins, that was the biggest upset (in part because of the goofy “hidden scores” to the crowd going into Finals, who were under the impression BD was still undefeated even though Scouts had won semis). Also, I think the reaction in 89 was as much just an acknowledgement of the sustained excellence of SCV over that stretch...silver medal in 85, 86, 87, 88. Finally got over in 89. Maybe it was a bit of a legacy placement over PR, but I see both sides.
89 reaction likely most complex of all, I always felt it was extreme approval for the competitive excellence of both units, a release of exhilaration, love for SCV's show, sheer amazement et al
Ya missed one… 92, Madison… Cavaliers & Star duking it out down the stretch. Would Star repeat? Or would Cavaliers win their 1st of 7 DCI Titles? Once Brandt Crocker announces *who* took 3rd, Camp Randall absolutely ERUPTED!!! bc while the Cadets ended up taking over 2nd, they weren’t going to take over First!! SPLOOOIE!!
Little known fact: Phantom’s 1989 show actually scored higher than their 2008 “I Am Spartacus” production, even though they placed higher in 2008. But then again, the Bluecoats scored higher in 2019 than 2016 despite falling short to the Devils.
The Illinois connection I call it... since they had to settle for third, they were just glad to hear BD get second when everyone else was CLEARLY pulling for Phantom to win
I was surprised that not included was the DCI Finals in 77’ when the announcer stated “even though the corps placed 15th in prelims, the Oakland Crusaders drumline placed 1st and took top drums in prelims and this score was not topped in the Finals.”…. Oh, the announcer didn’t say that…..lol
Honestly I feel like the transition between each one would have been a little smoother had it been in chronological order. Other than that, really like this video!
Whoever posted this must not be a big fan of the Cavaliers. They had two big crowd reactions; once in 1992 (their first title), and then again in 2002 (a record high score of 99.15 in addition to their third consecutive title). Oh yeah, and those crazy reactions by crowds who HATED Star of Indiana!
When BD gets second place, people cheer. That's just the way it is, unfortunately. BD is just so good that they are the corps to beat almost every year.
It was obviously Blue Devils in first, one judge put BD drums in 4th after they had won drums the first two nights. This was a disgrace that they even compared BD with the lesser SCV. The drum judge Chuck King hates BD, got revenge.
@@HarlowRiggs Maybe I should rephrase. BD did have great drum effects, and did really well that summer. The who "should" have won is subjective. However, when you hear the "boos" followed by chants of "SCV", I think there was a popular opinion that evening in Wisconsin on who deserved the gold. 1992 should include Phantom dropping to 8th and Crossmen 6th. As well as Star falling to 3rd. The stadium was defining.
Star was two corps that year, visually. I believe it is the year Zingalli passed away, and the 2nd 1/2 visually was written by a different designer.
