having taken 2nd myself, i know the pain. but i have to admit, even as a bd alum, i'm happy regiment won it on their own with a deserving show.
Alternative title: Blue Devils' villain origin story
I was in the crowd. I just aged out of BD the year before. I had my corps jacket, ring and everything on. I knew Phantom was going to win after the semifinals competition and I was very happy for them. The Drumline is what got them to first because they won drums that year. Realistically phantom's show was a better show. It is what it is
They made 2008 finals their own...from entry to exit, as an audience member, I was 100% bought into their performance. Never experienced a drum Corp show so well performed that I reacted as much as I did throughout the performance rather than at specific vignettes ( a battery feature, a guard feature, drill move, horn line feature, soloist, etc.). I was in it from pre-show to “I am Spartacus! and the traditional death of a Phantom drum major. The crowd did indeed “go wild” at the end of the show, that was the loudest reaction from a DCI crowd I ever heard at the time, especially at an outdoor venue (where DCI sounds best, in my opinion). I really appreciate you for posting this glorious moment in Phantom Regiment history.
I'm giving props to the Cavies for showing sportmanship for their Illinoisan brethren! It's like a proud father watching their son return to victory lane with the big kids once again.
One of the best years ever. I loved every single show in the top four. That's rare these days.
I aged out of Blue Stars that year. I felt the force of that roar from the field.
The way the members of Phantom reacted looked a lot like how the members of Crown winning in 2013 and Bluecoats in 2016. I was there on finals for Crown's announcement...but I think the crowd was louder for Phantom then it was for Crown or Bluecoats. First time wins are very special to everyone.
That was literally the release of 4 decades of pent up phan phrustration, remedying the annoyance of having to share it with Blue Devils in '96 and losing to the Devils in '82 with a Spartacus show plus the squeaker upsets to the Devils of 77 and 79.
That crowd was extremely loud. Very tough competition and well deserved win 🏆
That was an amazing night. The top three corps had shows that would've won in any other year, absolutely exceptional and engaging performances.
I'm not crying hysterically....you're crying hysterically. Well done Phantom Regiment. This show still gives me chills.
Fully deserved. It was and is the quintessential DCI show. Whenever I have to explain DCI to outsiders, it's Phantom Regiment's Spartacus I'm showing.
Just seeing the looks on Regiments faces when BD was announced in 2nd place gives me chills.
being in the winning band and knowing it’s a close race before hand, when you hear them call second and it’s not your band, you die of joy.
This is amazing. Thank you for sharing it!
SUTA brought me to tears.
Is it any coincidence this was the last finals outdoors? Electric atmosphere you just don't get at Lucas Oil.
Long live Regiment!
Best moment in DCI history!!!!
