- THE ULTIMATE BALL STRIKING DRILL
If there is one drill I use more than any other, it is this one. The vast majority of golfers struggle to make solid contact - the number 1 fundamental necessary to play the game. Topping, chunking, thinning the ball is a global pandemic affecting almost everyone who plays the game.
This HIT HARD, STOP QUICK drill is by far the most comprehensive “one-stop shop” for all your ball striking needs.
It helps to control the low-point (and ensures the low-point is far enough forwards), it helps with making contact in the centre of the club face, as well as teaching you how to move your body correctly - but without too much need to think about it!
Other benefits include better compression, increased lag and power transfer, radius management, sequencing, shaft lean and the unloading pattern of the arms and wrists! And the best thing is you get all of these extra things for FREE!!!
The best players in the world use this drill (with good reason), and you should too!

Very good demonstration. The last three and the slomo one at the end of the video motivate to repeat over and over again.
Problem with this practice is when u are ready to take a full back swing i mishit the ball since all three practice with this drill was using half swing. Please advise.
This is the holy grail of golf drills. As a former PGA member and instructor, Rob is right on point here. This will absolutely make you a better ball striker. I do this every single time I practice and it has made a world of difference for me and the quality of the strike. Thanks so much for posting this Rob, it has definitely made a difference in my golf game.
Thanks for reviewing/reposting this drill - awesome!
Brilliant, as always. Thank you.
Well presented; thank you for posting.
Great video, thanks Rob
Rob, you are awesome! Greetings from Los Angeles!!
Rob, what a gem. Thanks for taking the time to put this highly informative lesson together. You have my admiration.
Thank you Rob.Great TIP
Really like this Rob. I always hit the ball so much better when you remind me about this every few months on the channel!:) thank you
Excellent video as always Rob. That video you did on the right arm connected to the rib cage worked very well by the way.
Never miss your instructions. For me this video works as reminder and back to main task of hitting the ball better. It is as good as having personal golf coach nearby. To help to maintain and to improve everyone golf. Thank you Rob.
Great video! It seems very helpful to do as part of the warning up either in the driving range and/or going into the course.
Sounds good. Going to try this .
Good morning Rob-Liked the first time you presented this drill but like this even more as a reminder of how to keep things simple. You really are the best. Thanks for the wake-up call here in North Carolina. Be good,be safe-Russ
Great drill; been using in my practice sessions since I first saw your video a few weeks ago. Improve my ball striking with my irons a BUNCH. Definitely a noticeable difference ! Thanks, again. :)
Can't see this drill often enough. Every time I view it I learn more.-Stay safe-Russ
Rob, saw it the 1st time and even better the 2nd time around. I liked in the video seeing you and Nick with your follow thru NOT wrapped around your shoulder. Keep up the good work. I'll have to work on the wedge thru driver with this drill.
This motivation Drill , Feeling Builder in the Golfswing. Thanks
An essential part of my warmup before practice or a game! Absolutely essential (for me) if pre game warm up is in the nets! So good!
Thank you Rob. I tried it on my golf matt and I consistently hit the matt the same way. Best drill ever! You certainly are the best coach in RUclips
This is pure gold 🤩 thx
So happy I found you.
Awesome! I needed this drill, Rob! Thanks so much!
@@golftecasia : Doing well, Rob! Thanks! Hope you are, too, and thanks for all your help!
Will try this drill this weekend and see if it helps improve my ball striking, thanks
Fantastic drill my first time watching it. Can't wait to try it. Thank you Alejandro Gervasi SA Texas
The internet is a wonderful thing! I never thought I would find an instructor that explains things in a language I understand completely on the opposite side of the planet! I really enjoy your instruction and have subscribed. Please keep up the great work!
Awesome drill.
This is the best “reset” drill there is. When my swing is off, I go back to this and slowly work up to 1/2 to 3/4 swing. I have now played full rounds using a 3/4 swing and hit more greens! Thanks Rob.
Thanks I’m going to try that drill today before I play today.
Rob, thanks so much for this outstanding instructional video! I am really excited to begin implementing this Drill into my golf game! Many thanks. 👍😎🤸♂️🚴♂️⛹️♀️
Another great video.
very nice exercise. thanks
Just tried this drill hitting 15 shots. Really happy with the progress I'm making. Making crisp contact the majority of the time. It was hard to stop the club at first but it got easier over time. I'm going to hit another 15 shots later. Thanks Rob!
Rob, I was about to give up golf. This drill is an absolute golf MIRACLE. I can not thank you enough.
Thank you so much!
Thanks for the video
Started 4 Weeks ago with S&T and it works great…. Struggle sometimes with Ballposition, but it‘s getting better. This Drill is awesome and helped me a lot! Keep up the good Work!!! Greetings from Germany!
Good stuff thank you 😊
Interesting, going to try this!
this taught me how to put on the brakes, which allows the entire club to "release". thanks so much Rob
i've tried it out, very good drill. thnx.
This drill is what got me into stack and tilt. I saw one of your vids and was getting perfect contact using this drill. So then I went ahead and looked into all aspects of stack n tilt.
It's the easiest method to learn imo. Literally from ball 1 I started getting better contact, more distance, etc. Didn't take months and months of engraining feel. Just weight forward and go.
Worked on this today for hours and I’m getting my most consistent strike, ball flight and distance ever. Lost some distance but that will go up as i lengthen the swing slowly. Great stuff thank you
Rob..I used your great drill yesterday at the range and practiced it mostly with my PW thru 7I......it worked great!!! I hit 99% my shots very solid and almost just as far as normal...and almost no thinning the ball !!! ( which is my usually problem ) ..........I also concentrated on striking the ball with some forward shaft lean at impact and found myself in a much better finishing posture at finish.....thanks again for sharing this excellent video !!!
Hit 25 at range today (then worked on driver accuracy and 100 yards in), and did 100 off a mat into a net this afternoon, I like it. Tommy Fleetwood does a 3/4 swing because he likes the contact, I'm going to keep doing the reps and maybe play this swing some on a course. You've got a great swing (so do all those guys in your intro), really like your instruction.
This is the best exercise, for the golf swing, that I have ever encountered. I would challenge anyone to give this some time on the range and see if you don't lower your scores almost immediately. Thanks Rob ... great lesson =)
Just started this drill today. It’s fantastic. I was compressing 90-95% of my shots. The ball flight was straight as an arrow. Thanks for this gift.
I've been doing this for the last week but much slower. Crazy how the world works. I just walked away from my best round yesterday.
Having duffed many shots. I could of easily dropped another 5 shots. I actually shot plus 25, including a par 3's where I took shoot 6 shots and a par 5 when I shot 9.
Now I'll swing a little faster and stop faster.
Thanks Rob you've confirmed I'm going in the right direction. This gives me hope I can have my first round under plus 20 in the next few months.
I watched the original video on a while ago and this was a great reminder. This should probably be put out once every other month at least. Controlling the length of swing and low point really helps with contact and power. I am thinking of exclusively using this for practice and continuing to abbreviate follow through on course. I love that you give permission to stop following through to a “full” finish.
Gonna try religiously, hope for best, thank you, will get back with results.
Thanks!
Thanks for this Rob! This drill is a game changer. Hit the ball pure and crisp. Hitting 7 irons with smaller swings longer and better than I was with full swing. The ball striking was awesome- was so happy I had to write and thank you for this!!
Terrific lesson! Any comments on grip pressure when executing the drill?
Thanks got the winter to get in shape now
Perfect 👌
Really smart.
Great video Rob, I still practice this 7 years after that lesson and often use as a warm up before playing #gridlife
I just discovered; I’ve vasted 7 years. Tested this and it changed my swing completely😊
Thanks!
Arne
And Nick’s 3 step drill💪
Absolutely love this drill. The development of muscle memory will allow the mind to simply focus on the target and not the swing mechanics. A friend once told me to "check your brain in at the front desk" before playing a round...LOL
I agree! Ultimate Ball Striking Drill. Tried it out today. Couldn’t elude I was getting only 1 clung shorter in distance with a half swing,
Even works with chipping! I found with chipping slow back swing slow down, accelerate through impact and stop as quick as possible.
Heck of a video, hey are you looking at the ball on top,or front of it touch on this point
Really good drill. Today i hit a 140 flat carry with this one. (7i) Thanks very much!
My "Go To" golf instructor!
See message from me below. Just back from the range and wow! Where has this drill been for the past 5 years? It works. I started with a pitching wedge then tried a few with driver, then 3 wood off the deck which I could never hit flush and finished with 7 iron. Did I hit them all perfectly? No but when I did everything I was supposed to do, arms straight, weight forward, stop quickly it was amazing. Thank you so much for this, I'm playing in a comp tomorrow and although it's a drill, I'm taking it onto the course, I feel that good about it. Next step is lengthening the swing in stages but I'm not going to rush it, I recently spent £1200 on new irons and was beginning to think I'd wasted my money, now I feel great again!
I love this drill. I am 77 y.o. 5 ft 5 in tall and I now can hit a 7Iron 165yds, a gain of 20 yds since I started using this drill. Thank you.
Great Video! The trend in golf instruction lately seems to be focused on gaining distance by generating more speed in the swing. Besides the benefit of hitting the ball more flush, I have found that by incorporating this stopping motion (what seems to the very opposite to speed) it seems to create more power and therefore much more distance. Would like to hear your thoughts...
I played 18 holes on the sim using this practice on every shot, except the short 60s, and had my best round ever.
Great drill.Im off to the range to practice it.......as soon as it stops raining
Always practice using a tee. Broken tees are perfect just as if you were teeing it up on a par 3. It helps you feel like you don't have to worry about hitting the ground before the ball. Faldo and Nicholas and many other professionals always recommend this! I am a former PGA Professional (retired) and have given thousands of lessons and I can say practicing by teeing the ball up a little has always helped improve ball striking.
I think this may help with my over swing to 👍
😊
As I said rob tried wrench drill today best ball striking round this year even the odd shot I caught a bit thin were on target cant thank you enough cheers bud 👍 seriously ppl it works
Believe me rob all my golfing buddies will be told about it so fingers crossed they try it see it works and do the right thing and subscribe its the least I can do for you 😉
Pleasure all mine Rob 👍
Thank you Rob, one of your best
Great, for me it helps to think as a "en garde" move, kind of "shooting" the club immediately after impact into the ground, while my shoulders hold back (tuck hips move). What do you think?
Rob, is the rest of the setup for this drill weight left, etc.? Seemed like you were transferring weigh (but I know better lol!!). This will really help me get rid of the flip which I can’t seem to cure. Thx!
Great lesson. The question I have with the hips forward is, isn,t there a variable of how far the hips move forward from swing to swing. Sometimes it can be 2 inches or sometimes 4 inches forward. How do we make sure that hip forward amount is the same so that the impact point is the same.? Hope I explained that correctly. Thanks
I Like the drill a lot. It helps me also to get power out of the big muscle joints. But...
The forced short stop makes me feel that i could get an injury in my back (right side). Have you got any ideas considering this feeling? Kind regards, lu
10 handicap. 74 years old, 6'5". Tried the drill at the range today. Worked perfect with all clubs. When I started lengthening my swing, however, my miss percentage with irons increased, although I hit quite a few great shots. I'm almost 100% perfect with the driver, actually hitting draws further than with my normal, conventional swing (220 - 230). Question: it seems like this "swing fast stop soon" technique might be a good pre-swing drill on the course? What do you think? I'll keep working on improving my strike percentage, which is my goal.
Rob, do you think this drill causes you to push the hips toward the ball in the downswing vs. maintaining your posture?
I tried a version of this a few years ago where the Pro recommended pulling the club back immediately after impact to really put the brakes on… what a strike… ended up overdoing it and got tendonitis in both elbows 😩.
Now, on a 3/4 backswing using the stop quickly drill, how much distance do you lose or gain compared to a 3/4 swing with normal follow through… I’m going to guess distance is virtually the same but dispersion is tighter?
This is harder to do than you make it look. I tried this at the driving range and generally had solid contact. Which is an improvement on my usual thin shots.
I hit quite a few pull shots but managed to get it back on line by keeping the shoulders more vertical through the shot. That seems to make sense after listening again as you emphasised keeping the right shoulder down as per stack and tilt ‘shoulder down’ principle. Make sense?
Great stuff, Rob. These videos are quality information.
Rob, can I just confirm that this drill is for a practice session to instill the correct feeling of compression. I'm assuming that it's then taken to the course with the drill feeling gained in the practice being incorporated into a full swing.
Or are you saying you should take it to the game?
New fan here. I have been watching all your videos and even repeatedly. I have one important question please. This hit fast and stop drill. Is is the same feel as a punch shot? Is the wrist supposed to release at impact or just hold and hit hard and stop? I wish to know how it feels when impact. My friend says i am just hammering the ball like a whip and it is not a swing. Please help to explain a little further. Thank you ❤
Off to the range to give this a go, except for driver my ball striking has been poor. I'll report back in a couple of hours..
Hello, dies the drill Support the Moment of inertia of the Club Head versus the Butt of the Club and Accuracy of Flight Direction? Thanks for your advice.
Definitely works, but lately I'm getting a really increasingly deep divot, almost making the club stop in the ground. What's the mistake here, is it like need more pushing upwards through impact?
Can you do this drill with an impact bag ?
Does it matter what club to use in this drill or do you recommend a club to start with?
Hi, Rob. Ì I stop at P7, shall I straighten both legs post impact?
thanks rob,, I tried this with my putter today....balll went flying off the green...I guess I need to work on controlling speed. 🤣😂🤣
What distance adjustment will l need to make?
Can you get the same benefits without hitting balls and just swinging a club? What about plastic or other types of practice balls as I don't live near a range. Otherwise, excellent lesson...thanks
Same for driver & hybrid?🙏
The faster you swing it the easier it is to put the breaks on. That’s so important to know
Rob, I go to this sometimes even in a comp when things have unravelled a little. I think “Tommy Fleetwood”. Important for me though to also think about keeping the right shoulder moving down and through and to stop quick with straight arms. Because stalling through impact is one of my faults. Keeping the right shoulder moving and stopping very quick…does that make sense?
@@golftecasia It’s coming home. Harry and my United boys will deliver!
Can you do this with drivers and long irons?
Can this drill be done regardless of iron or 3W or Driver…? Is it as effective?
Finally got to 0 power at P9! Thnks
Hello Rob,
Enjoyed the video and currently working on the drill you recommend.
To me it does feel like a punch shoot.
Can you tell me if the shape of the shot with this drill should be a neutral ball flight.
The drill makes me feel that I am 'holding the club off' like I would hit a fade.
If I was going to hit a fade or indeed a draw would I have to change much with regards to using this technique on the course.
The drill to me feels more suited to a slight fade than a draw.
I like to hit both on the course.
Hope you make sense of my question.
Hello Rob,
Thank you for your reply.
Apart from the usual ball position and set ups with the fade and draw, do you use your hands to as I do when hitting these shots.
The reason I ask is when using the drill you mention, the hands and wrists remain quite passive and rigid.
There must come a point when these angles are released.
Going from flexion to extension etc so a fade and draw can be achieved.
Hope I'm making sense.
Really enjoy you informative videos.
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question.
So are you a proponent of S&T and does Golftec promote that method??
Continuously doing this drill, but still tend to come over the top, any ideas?
Best. Drill. Ever. If proof of the benefits of a shortened follow-through is required, watch Tommy Fleetwood.
