  • What is the function of the follow-through in the golf swing?
Of all the golf instruction videos and articles out there, a small percentage discuss the subject of the finish or follow-through. However, where and how you finish the swing has a significant impact on what you do before that point, as well as how consistent (or not) your swing will be.
If we consider the function of the follow-through, one of its main purposes is to slow the club down to a complete stop in a fraction of a second both SAFELY and without compromising the GEOMETRY of the stroke, allowing you to swing fast enough to hit the ball far, but also maintain the swing alignments to the point you are able to control the direction of your shots.
I often get asked why the follow-through even matters as "the ball has already gone", but then the question would be "why follow-through at all? why not just stop at the ball" - that makes no sense either.
You should consider a good follow-through and finish in the golf swing like a destination you drive to on a regular basis. The journey is comfortable and familiar involving the same route to get there each time. It's predictable and consistent. Conversely, a destination that is new every time involves a very different route and a very different outcome each time - much like a golf swing follow-through that is random and chaotic.
Learn to finish in the correct place EVERYTIME using the drill you will find in this video... and the best thing is, it's so easy to do!

This is pure gold, Rob. Thank you so much for making clear such a key point. I would suggest you post a video about how to fade the ball with irons, given the S&T draw-oriented bias, I find it extremely difficult to fade the ball using S&T set up. And the chapter on “attachements” of Michael Bennet and Andy Plummer’s book is quite confusing to me. Thank you in advance, at any time you come back to Spain I’ll be delighted to attend your teaching

Just found this video on full finish golf swing.. what a gem.. what is the correct sequence for this drill? 1. Extend arms, cock wrist, slide hip & turn?
    Or
2.Extend arms, slide hip, turn & cock wrist?
    Thanks for this great video.

Recently I have been practicing lower flighted shots by holding off my finish. Every swing feels like a 3/4 swing, fly lower, and generally goes straighter and farther. What I haven't tested is if this kind of shot can hold the greens as I am always worried it may roll too far. Thank you for the video - as far as I know you are the only one that advocates doing this on every shot. Would you also encourage doing this to driver/fairway woods/hybrids as well?

I heard Gary Player say that the finish position, P10, indicates that you’ve done everything correctly in the swing.

Rob, I am obviously a year late to this discussion and not sure if you will even see this. Nevertheless, while I fully agree with you about the importance of proper follow through and completion of the swing, how does this align with your passion for the "swing fast and stop quick" drill? The two concepts seem mutually exclusive to me. Thank you.

It's interesting I was in the yard today, even though it was only about 40 degrees, working on one of your other tips about the back swing and was thinking my follow through was inconsistent. I have been doing a lot of "Hit Hard Stop Quick" practice lately too so have not been really following thru much at all, which in the end is a good thing since I don't want to take all the work I have been doing and go back to my old follow thru. Now I have a target that makes sense and is in line with your other S&T videos and drills.
Hands down you have the best S&T training videos on You Tube my friend and I recommend then highly to anyone who wants to learn the S&T method. Just outstanding stuff man.

Rob, what a secret, what a lesson. After a couple of practice sessions and rounds the results are amazing. The club head stabilization I feel I've never felt before. Can vary trajectory with hand position at the finish and works really well on short pitches as well. You are the best!!!

Can you clarify ? Rehinging the club to slow the club down .?You look like you are radial deviating the trail wrist or are you extending it?

Both myself and a playing partner after all the years have only recently got to grips with the body rotation and position in the follow-through and now both of us can really feel and see the difference it makes. For me I am increasing distance and and I feel far more comfortable when its coordinated correctly. This video comes at a very timely period where we are both concentrating on the body rotation and follow through. Thanks Rob for all your advice.

Excellent video Rob. Thank you. Agreed, enough talk about the follow through. I'm definitely breaking down after impact by bending my arms to get to the finish. Bad mechanics and bad flexibility. I will start to work on this.

Thanks for taking the time to read this
    Two things.
1)For this video: your clear explanation for a visual learner is ideal. I need to do this more.
    2) Before 3 weeks ago, I'd purposely not hinged my wrists (only 2.5 years playing golf, why introduce a fault). Your previous 2 wrist videos gave me the correct instruction and confidence to try. Went to the range and added at least ten to 15 metres to all my irons. I was hitting 10 meters into a wind blowing directly into my face.
    I'm ever so grateful
PS I recently hit 84 (first time sub 90). #gridlife
