OMG, I can't make up my mind on which one to choose between the Free metcon 5 and Metcon 9. Your video is really a life saver. Thanks a lot. I will go with the Free metcon 5. Great vid and thanks again.
I believe the TPU heel serves a purpose. While I haven't tested M8 or M9 yet, M7 stands out as one of the best CrossFit shoes I've owned, mainly due to the stability provided by the TPU heel during lifting.
It's purpose is stability, sure, but at what cost? To tank versatility? So many other options that are just as "stable" that don't feel like cinderblocks when running, jumping, and walking, lol. It's an overdone feature like the rope guard, IMO. Looks cool on paper and makes folks feel like they're getting "more" but in reality it's just flash and not that useful in the context of pure output compared to its peers.
@@thatfitfriend Appreciate your answer dude. Probably anything except running feels fine for me in M7, but tbf my feet always felt destroyed running even in M4 or M5 for more than 3k, although those don’t have a TPU heel. At the same time lifting wasn’t feeling that stable as in M7. Obviously I haven’t tested even a fraction of training shoes you had and my point was that from what I had, the ones with the TPU felt best and if I’d only have to skip the running - let it be;) Btw, I had a chance yesterday to put M9’s on my feet and those are clunky af IMO lol! I might try ordering Reebok Nano x4 as I’ve saw some good reviews, including yours, and if those don’t fit, I’ll stick with M7’s for now.
Thks for the great vids. Of course it’s individual, but for me the best fit is the Nike free Metcon 5, fits best my feet and I like the higher heel base. The metcon 8 and 9 are the worst I tried.
Hey Jake, thanks for the video. Nike has released the Free Metcon 6. I’m doing some group training, 2 times per week body cross, 1 time HIIT, 1 time power training. In the middle of them I’m adding 2 days of weight lifting (not heavy type, just for muscle strength). Should I go to Free Metcon 6?
Hey, Jake! Thanks for the informative video. I have a question about which option might suit me best. I typically engage in moderate to heavy strength training daily, but I’m also interested in starting short runs. Which of these would you recommend for my scenario? Or do you think I should have separate pairs for running and strength training? Also, how would you compare these to the Adidas Dropset 2 Trainers? Thanks again for your help!
Just came across your channel, great and useful content. I have a Metcon 7 and the Mesh is ripping apart but I love thhe stability of that shoe. I squat and deadlift around 310 lbs. Will the Metcon 5 be as stable as Metcon 7 for this weight?
Free Metcon 5 won't give you the same stability. I'd look for older 7s or an 8 if you want a shoe that feels similar/don't want to change when something is working! Thank you!
Great video! I work as perosnal trainer (i stand about 12h a day) and i wanna buy some that is comfortable for this and the training. Which you recommend, it may be from another brand?
Hello Jake! Great work and reviews! I saw some new models from Adidas, Rapidmove trainer and Amplimove trainer. Any thoughts about these models? It would be interesting to see a review between them and their brothers, Everyset or Dropset 2.
I just ordered a slightly used Metcon 8, and I also ordered a new Air Zoom Tr1 direct from Nike. Nike has an article for the best shoes for jump rope where the Air Zoom Tr1 and Free Metcon are the main trainers suggested (I think maybe the free run 5.0 as well). Anyways, since getting into jump roping, I have tried a bunch of shoes since I was already on a shoe journey since before that starting to do very long walk at a fast pace and having sore feet. I also saw some recommendations for basketball shoes for jump roping, which makes sense, but they are heavier/clunky at times. I'm 6"3 and about the size of a medium sized football player, so some shoes that get reviewed as comfy and good cushion are just too soft and mushy to have good support. But some of these trainers seemed promising, and going in the direction Nike suggests seemed to make sense. Do you have any thoughts on the best jump rope shoes to use? I'm also joining a gym and concerned that since I have to walk to the gym and back 1 1/2 miles each way, some gym shoes won't work well for that--like the Free Metcon seemed maybe too fragile with the foam, and maybe the Metcon would not be fun to walk in that much. Great channel and videos--you need more likes! I've been watching and adding mine!
Love it - Gotta love when Nike covers the "best shoes" and it's just their models, lol. Good ole' SEO tactics. What have you thought about the Air Zoom TR 1? My mind also goes to models like the Reebok Nano X4, Inov8 F-Lite G 300, and RAD ONE. They're all stable, yet responsive and have full rubber outsoles to give you that walking durability!
@@thatfitfriend still waiting to get the air zoom tr 1. but will let you know. i get how nike is going to recommend their shoes but yeah hahaha i'l check out some of the others you mentioned. it has been hard to figure out what is best since i don't think a lot of running shoes are great for other things since many running shoes are now so specialized. and then basketball shoes can be clunky and gym shoes not good for walking to the gym. good to have specialized options, but would be nice to have some great all around shoes that worked perfectly for jumping rope
@@thatfitfriend Hey, I've only worn mine once for a jump rope session just now since getting them the other day, and not sure why everyone says that are not for wide feet since my forefoot was sliding side to side, which isn't something I've experienced much with any shoe--any ideas? Will try to adjust lacing some more but it was odd even for loose lacing, which I didn't feel it was. Also the upper is super annoying with this crunchiness that is nonstop whenever moving--sounds and feels like it is made out of cardboard inside the fabric. I like the supportive platform in the heel and the cushion is comfortable, not too soft or hard, but a little softer than harder idk--not sure if I would call them bouncy in a way that is good for jumping or just feels like your foot bounces a bit in the shoe in an odd way, will have to walk more in them and jump rope some more... There was some pinching in my left big toe as well on the top of the shoe that will hopefully go away. Not sold on these yet to be honest. Things I definitely like and things I feel like are almost or are deal breakers. Do that sound go away? I even heard it in your other video on these after rewatching it just now and on another review it is mentioned. But damn. Also there is a tiny heel, and I feel like that is not the best for jump ropes since its edges can catch the rope a little--and jump rope is what I mostly bought these for. Also mine are the green ones and they are already getting a bit dirty just from the jump rope mess ups hitting them. Will give them a couple weeks, but 50/50 chance of return after first wear test. You felt like they grew on you a bit? Probably clear I'm feeling a bit discouraged with these after wearing once. Still looking for that one shoe haha
I have a question about the size of the Free Metcon 5. My normal shoe size is 8.5(26.5cm) and the upper of the Free Metcon 5 feels tight. In this case, should I go a half size larger? The Air Zoom TR 1 is sized fine at 8.5.
@@thatfitfriend Old Ankle issues and surgery, over time have lead to more calf strains. But, the calf strains really became a bigger issue when I started training in these. They are very comfortable. Hey Jake, I got both of the metcon 9 and free 5 shoes for $90 USD each, and I’m thinking of keeping both because I feel like they’re different enough that I’ll use the 9 for the squat and deadlifts, and free 5 for all else. Is that an insane proposition?
Not at all - I rotate my trainers based on different workouts and a lot of folks do something similar. You'll get more out of your shoes in doing so, too!
METCON 9 FTW!!! It definitely helps when I want to spread my toes out to curl my big toe, have my chest proud, glute activated and get that last rep in!

I have the Metcon 8 and the heel is very loud when it makes contact with the floor. Is the heel in the Metcon 9 just as loud or not as loud when walking on normal floors/non-matted gym floors? Considering getting the 9s if the plastic heel isn’t so noisy when walking.
@@thatfitfriend Darn, that’s what I was afraid of… but thank you for the response! I rotate between my Free Metcon 5’s and the Metcon 8’s so I think I’ll just stick with the 8’s as my lifting shoe until I come across something else.
