The REAL Killers - Trans Fats

  • Suboptimal. It's a word that's almost synonymous with the fitness industry at this point. It doesn't matter what you try to do or what you try to eat, it's always suboptimal. And you know what? Maybe that ok. Maybe there's more than one way to skin this cat. And some consolations can be made to strengthen your relationships with food. But some lines are not worth crossing. Some lines will always contribute to an early grave and it's time to bring the next one into the light: Trans Fats. The primary sponsor of heart issues.

Once I got more concerned with my performance (i'm a cyclist), I obviously started looking at training in a very different way, but more importantly my nutrition. I used to eat just the minimal ammounts, in part because I wanted to stay as lean as possible, and I also wanted to stretch my calorie budget for some alcohol consumption. Now I prioritize my nutrition and recovery more than anything. Carbs and fats are not the enemies as so many people lead you to believe, in fact, they're way more important in endurance sports than protein, that's not to say you shouldn't eat protein at all obviously but there's a reason why marathoners eat a whole ton of pasta before a race. Anyways, there's always room for improvement and there's obviously never an absolute truth (except trans fats are definitely bad lol), It's important to always keep learning and certainly this kind of content is awesome for that.

Denmark was the first country to limit trans fats in 2003. It was limited to a maximum of 2% of total fats in base products. That means we can’t have more than 2% trans fats in the ingredients used to make other products, so even processed foods have way less than 2% trans fats.
Most people eat much less than 1 gram of trans fats a day here.

It doesn’t really matter if you consume butter or margarine. Very hard to isolate that variable in a persons diet which is why almost studies on trans fats are junk. Calorie intake, sugar intake, and physical activity are easy to track and are much more likely to explain weight problems in the UK. Thankfully with the rise of biking as a form of commute it should get better as long as sugar intake or calorie intakes don’t drastically increase proportional to increased average activity.

I'd recommend looking into the most recent lipid guidelines from the American College of Cardiology and the European Society of Cardiology, or Thomas Dayspring's recent series on The Proof podcast. Interesting changes in best clinical practice of the past few years (chiefly that LDL is the main driver of heart disease and metrics like high HDL ratios aren't protective)
