One slight correction, because I apparently can not make a perfect video to save my life: when addressing overhydration, in more extreme cases this can lead to HYPOnatremia not HYPERnatremia. Hypo meaning not enough. With the Na that follows standing for sodium and emia meaning its prescence in blood
Was going to say. Too much water dilutes salt. Hence hypo and not hyper. Dehydration would more likely be hyper. It's similar when you study biology and learn about isotonic, hypotonic, and hypertonic.
Could you implement consistent units for measurements (metric system) for you future videos? I always found measuring in “cups” to be a bit arbitrary it would be helpful for us over the pond to see mL, cm, alongside to make it more accessible to use the information your giving out. Just some constructive criticism love your videos dude!
Hey Talon! Since this video got me feeling so hydrated, I think a whole separate video on salt and/or other electrolytes would be very helpful for a lot of us. There's a lot of confusion surrounding how much we really need.
I've been drinking plain water exclusively for almost 6 years now. It really has made my life a lot better. It helped me get back down to a normal weight and maintain it, it keeps me full in between meals, and helps with my dry mouth and waking me up in the morning. It is quite literally the best drink ever, you can't beat it, high hydration and 0 calories.
Not sure if it necessarily is a True Nutrient or a True Killer, but I would like to see Talon take on the messy topic of low-calorie sweeteners (Aspartame, Sucralose, Stevia, Monkfruit, etc.) and provide a reasonable cost-benefit analysis.
as a diabetic, i'd be really interested to see a glycemic index tier list; foods (other than pure protein, or pure fat,) ordered by how much they spike your blood sugar. it may concern diabetics in particular, but all people do benefit from limiting high GI foods
Water gets described as tasteless, but to me there's a distinct difference in taste depending on the source. The water at my house tastes great, but at other people's can taste pretty bad, so if you don't like drinking water because of the taste, try using a filter or bottled water (or move house 😅)
Water is tasteless, the things dissolved in it might not be It usually tastes better if it has an appropriate amount of minerals and is clean (there's a lot of weird smells and colours that are considered "aesthetic" issues in many municipal water supplies that they don't bother fixing)
Amateur singer here. I used to think that I drank "when I needed" but someday, researching the internet, I found out that the best/easiest thing you can do to improve your singing is drinking more water. I got myself a sport bottle and I started to drink more often (as you said, if you keep it close, you will drink more). That was about six months ago and it has made a great difference. Not only do I sing better, but also hangovers have practically disappeared (I'm 46 and I go out from time to time) and in general I feel much more "slicker" (I know, crappy explanation). All in all, you're so right about water. Great video!!
Back when I was in drum corps, I'd probably be drinking upwards of 3+ gallons a day, since we were outside in the middle of the Texas summer rehearsing and excercising for 10-12 hours a day, every day. And I feel like the activity made me something of a compulsive water drinker, since I still probably drink at least a gallon a day now, years later, and I feel like I'm way more sensitive to thirst than most people because of it.
No we put ,dry gas, into our gas in freezing weather , it is alcohol that absorbs water out of the gas and keeps it from freezing, seems it would dehydrate a body.
Hey, thank you for the great videos! One suggestion though: For the rest of the world that does not live in the USA, it would be great if you could include litres and other metric units in your videos.
Thank you for making this video! I have a very physical job that requires me to stay hydrated but I'm constantly forgetting to drink water until it feels dangerous. I've been trying to find the right amount to drink each day but I'm constantly pushing for more if possible.Very informative and it kept me interested!❤
I am a professional health coach and psychologist, mostly coaching patients with chronic pain or depression. Yet, there is also your "everyday" patient who just wants to lose weigth or get advice in food and drink intake. Once , i had a patient with quite a lot disgestive problems, he was tired all the time and had regular headaches. We (my colleagues and I) could not find the problem, since he was a young man with no apparent illnesses who did a lot of exercise.(Note: we are not a hospital and do not take blood samples) As a routine, we asked him among other stuff, if he drank enough water. He assured us that, yes, he did. Then one day, one of the nurses asked him how much water he considered to be enough and he said "I try to drink at least 4 liters a day". When we reduced his water intake to 2 liters per day he quickly recovered.
THIS IS TOO GOOD TALON. You provide such insanely high-quality videos, l love this! And you motivate me so much to learn more about nutrition and how the body works. 🎇🎆
you should do a video on enriched foods like pastas and rices and breads. I think a lot of people don’t know if they are good or worse than non enriched foods
An excellent video as always. How about making a vid for salt and electrolytes ? It would link with this vid quite well and I think there is a lot to tackle. Cheers
last summer i got really sick and was so nauseous keeping water down was hard. after 2 weeks i started having some insane symptoms: my vision was having light spots, muscle stiffness, searing headache, at one point i genuinely thought i might be having a stroke. the IV brought me back from the edge. never again!!
Another consideration for determining the correct amount of water intake for you is medications you're on. I take Bupropion which greatly increases the amount that I sweat. I take another med (Glycopyrrolate) to help with that but I still sweat more than normal so I need to take that into account when consuming water.
I've carried a 2 liter hydroflask with me for the last six+ years. I only ever fill it with plain water and go through about one a day. It's done wonders for my immune system and general health.
Hey Talon you should go over types of water & safest water to drink. Spring water, Distilled Water, Alkaline Water, Even tap water.... I rely mostly on Spring water. The type of water matters too. Water is just water, but even Tap water can have harmful contaminants. Source of our Water is really important. Thanks!
"Pure", "real", tap water is ironic. Tap water has many different chemicals that are not safe for you long term even in areas with good water treatment (just can't filter everything out at that capacity) get a RO filter with remineralization
Overhydration is a real problem with prolonged exposure to harsh environments. Hikers can fall victim to it if they don't prioritize electrolytes during long hikes in hot dry areas like the American Southwest. I've heard plenty of guides share stories of finding hikers sitting in the shade in a daze on hot days with plenty of water, but end up needing rescue because their sodium is so low. That being said... you're thirsty go drink something.
Waters role is to help transport nutrients. It also has a great effect on satiety. I think the problem with water is understanding ones water needs. Too little or too much and can really hurt you. Understanding your baseline and how to appropriate water will keep you from getting sick.
You've confused hypernatremia with hyponatremia. Hyper = too much sodium (not enough water). Hypo = not enough sodium (too much water). Great presentations!!

Excellent video, would it be possible to do a video covering what water is most effective for hydration? I’ve heard to drink filtered water, tap water, water from the store with additives, filtered water with sea salt, and more. Next up: Water tier list. Tap water, Rain water, Spring water, Bottled water, Mineral water, Ground water, Soda water, Sparkling water, Sea water, Stormwater...
One thing not mentioned is that 9 out of 10 people saying they drink enough water sadly mean sodas, teas, coffee, alcohol (yes), anything really besides _water_ So the real issue imo is just how few people really actually drink _the_ water instead of water-containing beverages that usually take more water to process than they bring which leads to dehydration
Hey Talon, i would love if you put metric units in the video for lazy people like me! Even if you dont say it, having it there helps me having to stop the video and convert units. Appreciate your channel!
Hey Talon, I have a philosophical question, water is a medium for all the minerals, i've been looking into the real problem with dehydration regarding minerals, as everytime you sweat or you drink too much water or your body is using too much you lose minerals with the fluids. This means that side effects of dehydration happen because of lack of minerals and water. The real question here is, isnt it better that you reduce pure water intake and try consuming richer mineral water as it should give you much lower mineral loss and all in all better body regeneration. I thought this was gonna be about which filtered/bottled water is healthiest to drink. Least heavy metals, chemicals, impurities, etc. Great video still.
what we really need in the water are the minerals, expecially magnesium but also potassium and sodium. Water nowadays doesnt have as much minerals concentrated as in the past and the reason why many ppl are dehydrated is not because they are drinking too less water but that their water and/or their whole diet lacks minerals. magnesium is almost the most important mineral in our body and it is certainly recomennded nowadays to supllement it through like magnesium bicarbonate water (reaction between magnesium hydroxide and co2 aka sparklong water).
