Talon's videos are solid so (assuming you have no preexisting conditions or specific goals other than 'be healthy') you could choose a random meat, bean (or grain) and 2/3 vegetables from his B/A/Top tier and you'd have a pretty good blueprint for balanced meals.
This is what bothers me about people's conception of protein. They think protein from bread/pasta/beans is the same as protein from meat/dairy. I mean technically yes protein is protein, but protein has its own list of micronutrients that a lot of people probably don't get enough of.
You're right. The protein from meat and dairy stimulates IGF-1 production which fuels the growth of tumors. And it comes attached to a carcinogenic slab or slurry of saturated fat and cholesterol that increases risk for heart disease, digestive cancer, obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, alzheimers, and parkinsons. All plants contain all 9 essential amino acids in varying amounts. A diet of varied whole plant foods easily hits the marks for all 9 essential amino acids, as well as the total protein requirement. Increasing your heart disease risk by 46% to get "better protein" is a terrible idea.
I think its a very unbiased video on the subject. As a vegetarian, lots of videos really push the "Where do you get your protein"? or "Does fish count"? Just don't eat the exact same thing all day every day. I don't even think about my protein sources and I get stronger every week. Typically, on a plant-based diet, you don't even need to worry about deficiencies in macronutrients so long as you're generally eating healthy foods and hitting your calorie goals (most healthy plant-based things that have a sizable amount of calories will also have a sizable amount of protein and/or healthy fat). There are a small handul of micronutrients (4 or 5 maybe) that are difficult to get from plant-based sources, but typically you can find cereals and plant-based milks that are fortified with those nutrients. They're double the calories of protein/carbs and thus I feel like that's yet another way people demonize them, thinking fat makes you fat. Which it can, but it's also really key for nutrient absorption, hormones, and especially in my experience, just eating enough (as someone with a very weak appetite) and that's why things like Omega 3 supplements exist, why many supplements have oils added for absorption, and why you're often supposed to take them with a meal. Anecdotally, I've also just felt a dozen times better since making fats a priority. Like avocados and nuts. Which are also pretty good for fiber, especially the former. Meanwhile, fat is demonized and often "feared" by some for being higher calorie. It is the de-facto choice for many people to buy the fat free version of stuff, like milk, yogurt, there's even things like that walden farms peanut butter which I hear is just awful. Basically, twice the calories doesn't mean half as good, and it's great to moderate the intake, but the food industry marketing might have you believe it's less important and even more harmful than it really is. Just my two cents. I like a balance of everything, but fats I think are something to at least be conscious of that you have enough. Much like water.

This is super useful! I’ve been vegan for many years, so I’ve gotten a lot of shit from people talking about complete proteins lol. I really don’t find it very difficult to do though. Many people on plant-based diets eat a decent amount of things like soy, quinoa, and other complete proteins. And very common combinations like rice + beans or peas + corn will also cover all the essential amino acids. When I started looking into nutrition, I realized I was already getting complete proteins just by not eating like crap.
Just out of curiosity, how much protein are you getting per day. I’m an athlete that’s looking to go vegan for a while and am wondering how difficult would it be to hit the 180g of protein, that i am currently getting, on a plant based diet.
@@Patrick-sz7ukUsually about 100g, but I rarely use any protein supplements since I’m not a body builder or anything. It would be hard for me to get to that number without supplementation, but it might be possible if you’re eating the densest sources and not eating as many carbs or fats!
one problem of a vegan diet is that your body process the nutrients very slowly, so depending on the person it can be kinda tiring or whatever. most vegans also overvalue the number of nutrients their body actually get to consume but that's on them
@@pikminologueraisin2139 As long as you’re still eating enough and frequently, you really shouldn’t have many issues? I guess it could depend on the person. If anything, LOTS of people are deficient in fiber, which is almost never true for vegans/vegetarians. That’s most of what slows down digestion, and if anything, that means people won’t have chronic constipation or have to take fiber supplements…

I like the new video and think it could make a really nice series as you make your way through the list. Targeting protein is the single "dietary" change that has helped my weight management the most. I try to target 1g/cm of height (about 0.9 g/lb in my case) and the resulting fullness has helped me keep the processed junk to a minimum without feeling like I am depriving myself. I could see a pretty successful "diet plan" where someone would just hit a protein target with clean proteins and then backfilling with stuff that isn't Twinkies; which is an incredibly powerful thing given the current Fad Diet market.
What you said is exactly what I try to do. I eat a lot of clean meat and a buttload of eggs from my friend's backyard hens. I fill in the rest with veggies if I'm cooking for myself, or whatever junk food my friends/family want to eat. I feel pretty damn good most of the time eating like this, and only really start to feel like garbage when I've consumed too much sugar/caffeine.
You should make a new “the real killers” video about artificial food dyes, would really help to inform people on the side effects of these terrible ingredients in our food.
I love your videos man! Thanks for the great information. I may be spoiled on todays world of content, but maybe invest in a decent mic lol. I’m gonna watch the vids either way but hey! It could definitely improve overall quality! Keep up the awesome content
Good introduction to protein. and i understand it is just baseline information. But a a lot of the bioavailability of plant-proteins studies that were done, were done on animals like mice and on raw forms of the food in ways that people may not even consume them. I'd also like to point out that plant-proteins are associated with longevity, where animal proteins are much harsher on the kidneys due to their tendency to have higher acidic profiles (Generally from having more sulfur containing amino acids), not to mention they are a package deal with saturated fats and dietary cholesterol. Among environmental toxins being in higher concentrations, Heme-iron (linked to various cancers and diabetes), TMAO production among others. It is a complicated topic, but for actual health, plant-proteins from what I have seen from the research is far more health promoting. Their "Package deal" is getting fiber, anti oxidants, phytonutrients, anti-inflammatories etc.
Sir, Brussels sprouts are just about my favorite vegetable! How dare you insult them within the first minute of this otherwise-splendid video?! I demand satisfaction! Dueling forks at 30 paces, to be used eating a full bowl of sprouts! Have at you!

And very common combinations like rice + beans or peas + corn will also cover all the essential amino acids. When I started looking into nutrition, I realized I was already getting complete proteins just by not eating like crap.
you cant stop billions of animals being slaughtered every day by not consuming meat. you dont matter

As long as you’re still eating enough and frequently, you really shouldn’t have many issues? I guess it could depend on the person. If anything, LOTS of people are deficient in fiber, which is almost never true for vegans/vegetarians. That’s most of what slows down digestion, and if anything, that means people won’t have chronic constipation or have to take fiber supplements…
Thank you for all your incredible videos, they are a precious source of information.
Your videos are great
Absolute banger video
Fantastic video, and loved the sneaky comment at the beginning that if we were watching this we were "probably" alive! good one! I'm not entirely sure, sitting here with CFS/ME. Would love more information on the mitocondria...
i really love this channel.
Wow, I love this guy's content. I really wish I had this guy as a teacher (even though he already kind of is one to me)
A video about ashwagandha or turkesteronw would be interesting!
A video about gluconeogenesis would be very appreciated.
You deserve much more subscribers, keep it up
All bodybuilders end up becoming biochemists once they snap
Amazing thank you for this video!!

Brilliant! Your content packaging is brilliant and most helpful 👍
A video on MICROs will be much appreciated. Not sure if you can mention brands and dose to meet RDA. Looking forward 😊
Thank you for making such informative videos! Would love to see one on carbs.
Absolutely incredible, thank you!
8:12 "Meth-ee-oh-nay??" -> "Meh-thigh-oh-neen"
love this series!
W upload! Love it!
You should make a new “the real killers” video about artificial food dyes, would really help to inform people on the side effects of these terrible ingredients in our food.
I love this channel! You could adjust your mic settings or get a better one though. The newer videos have better though so it could just be this one!
No the mic quality has always been a problem. No one's giving me any advice though so I'm just doing the best I can
Excellent humor my friend
Thanks so much for making these videos. They've been super helpful and have inspired me to eat healthier foods!
Maaan y'all haters. Brussels sprouts are lit! Outstanding educational video tho. Thanks for the great content coach!
I was surprised that you did not mention gains as a complete protein. Thank you for the information. Eva
Gains as a complete protein? What do you mean? Never heard of a food called gains

Currently in bed sick, than god I have all these videos to binge🎉
First! Your content is the best!
Man love your voice and channel ❤
Love the new video style
I mean. It's the same as the Real Killers one. Everyone seemed to like those
This is your best video. Waiting for the Fat and carb ones!
I know the tier lists are the most popular but you should really continue with "The True/Real Nutrients/Killers" and potential new series.
Yayy !!! Talon's new video is here
Sir, Brussels sprouts are just about my favorite vegetable! How dare you insult them within the first minute of this otherwise-splendid video?! I demand satisfaction! Dueling forks at 30 paces, to be used eating a full bowl of sprouts! Have at you!
Fr Brussels sprouts are my jam
quick note: dont use darker texts on darker colours. The moment at 0:48 is a good example, where I cant tell whats written on that dark red circle.
Babe wake up, new nutrition lore just dropped
I see your video and click on it no questions asked bro👍👍 great job
Could you please talk on a video about pre and probiotics, and how can we benefit from them? Love your interesting videos, keep it up💪🏼
Fantastic, I like your videos but I’d upvote this one twice if I could. Please do the other macronutrients, following a similar format!
Woah, now I know why I don't have my life together. I need to double down on my hate for brussels sprouts!
It's not the quantity of protein that is important, it's the quality.
