Forest are 100% within their rights to complain about PGMOL. They’ve had some shockers this season. I’m not a Forest fan, but I noticed they had 3 weeks in a row where they were denied clear penalties imo, which is why they hired Clattenburg…to try and highlight the poor decisions they were getting! But it seems like that’s antagonised the officials, and now it’s even worse for them!
That’s in essence the problem of refereeing in the prem - they let petty disputes and pride, as well as conflicts of interest with regards to going to the UAE midweek to referee games there, interfere with their professionalism

I am totally disappointed with Alan's comment and to think both Micah and Garry accepted is shameful. They are behaving like ostriches. To hide behind professionalism and argue that they should be quiet and shut up is appalling to say the least.
The PGMOL should be called out in what ever term. Football is business and no refereeing decisions especially in the time of VAR should go against a team in that way

No idea what Lineker is talking about. He barely ever left the penalty box! The reason he never got booked is because he never got anywhere near making a tackle - because he did zero defensive work. He'd be running an extra 2-3km a game in a Klopp or Pep team.

I believe xG was originally an algorithm used for betting where it makes more sense. If you have to put your money on one side, it's better to put it on the team with the higher xG or perhaps even more so when trying to predict a specific score. It's usefulness in the game itself is debatable, especially for a game you're actually watching. If you're scanning the results of games you didn't catch live, it's perhaps a useful statistic to assess the quality of chances created...but we can also infer that from possession+shots+shots on target...
Forest fan here. Something has to be done about the awful standard of officials. They are not operating anywhere near the standard of what they need to be in a league as big as the premier league. Clubs have to call out the PGMOL because at the minute they have no punishment for making huge mistakes again and again. With that being said I don’t know why forest included the “Luton fan” in their statement? People should be talking about the PGMOL instead forest have drawn attention to themselves 🤷♂️

It's UNDENIABLE that the game is far more athletic and intense than it used to. No doubt about it. Because when the technical level reached a certain point, it's extremely hard to get even higher. So then athleticism is what you improve. Nowadays players are much faster. Stronger. They run much much more. And yes, we might have reached a point where technical ability has gone down from like 20-25 years ago, but maybe that's just the time to find the balance and get the technique back up. But it's undeniable. In the 70s/80s, football players were running about 7-8km/game. Nowadays it's about 11.
And bringing in how the game was harder in the contacts before has nothing to do with it. Taking a hit is NOT the same has 90 minutes of constant effort. This doesn't have the same consequences, and the starting subject is impacted by the 90-minute efforts, not just a hit in a game.

@@fulleylonely1138 Michael Oliver once said that he couldn't officiate Newcastle games during relegation crunch time due to a conflict of interest and potential of bias, and yet now its a non issue for the PGMOL. we can't keep acting like these club statements are bigger problems than the PGMOL.
The whole reaction to this from the FA and the media has been so predictably and disappointingly English. 'How dare you step out of line'.
Why are so many convinced that there can be not even unconscious bias in our game. Even the PGMOL don’t really believe that otherwise why would they ask refs to declare their allegiances when they join the register. Attwell should not have been on VAR and the fact that he acted so incompetently at best and corruptly at worst threw up this furore. If he had done his job even close to properly no one would be questioning anything.

The speed is higher now, the game is much more intense now. No longer is the game just thumping the long ball to the striker, it's more on overloading spaces and running into positions for attacking and scoring

The accusation wasn't that the ref had cheated, it was them bringing up a clear conflict of interest and being ignored before the game (and then also getting screwed by the decisions during it). If people take that as embarrassing they should look themselves hard into a mirror...

That's true its not easy to do, but they threw that lead away so easily, could not believe what I was seeing.
As a Coventry fan (though not deeply following Championship football this season), I'm so glad I got a ticket for the game. Loved being amongst the crowd again, we're all proud of the players. It was a really tough result to swallow, but it was an amazing game overall.
As a Cov fan, my opinion on VAR and offside doesn't really change: I like it as long as it's quick and decisive, but the attacker's advantage (which used to be given as benefit-of-the-doubt by the linesmen) is no longer in the game. A wider offside line would give the attackers that advantage and make high-pace attacking football permissible again. Set lines at the screen pixel, make both drawn lines half-a-foot wide, or maybe even one foot, to allow that attacking bias - if they overlap/touch at all, then it's on-side. I think you wouldn't be able to split hairs about advantage, and you'd get no more toe-nail decisions.
The offside's purpose was to prevent goal-handing and the unfairly advanced attacking player. If a striker's on the shoulder, we shouldn't give them the whole step ahead, but maybe we can allow a boot, let alone a toe, right?

I think 90% of fans are with forest on this VAR shitshow, It’s so clear that the PGMOL/Premier League have mentioned something to media - Sky in particular - to not highlight appalling refereeing. Probably under the guise of anti bullying or something.
If Pool lose by 3 points or less, they should take their case to court. Whether that's the PGMOL or the FA. If Forest go down, press repeat.
The intensity that comes from the heavy tackles, pushing and pulling, are probably more damaging.
Would love an episode with a deep dive in the differences in the game and the surrounding factors. Maybe some guests and research. It's an very interesting topic. Fair play to all the guys fighting thier corners, no one wants to think their generation had it any easier than any other. Would be interested to see what a deeper dive would turn up.
Both Lineker and Shearer make very valid points about football now compared to the past few decades (as did Souness on talkSPORT yesterday). There is too much of players from the modern era thinking the game is much tougher now than it was before, but the stresses on players in the 80s and 90s was worse re: pitches and subs, plus the best teams had players playing 50-60 odd games a season.

For Micah’s point about xG, they do factor team quality into it to a degree. That’s why sometimes Salah or Kane will finish a 0.12xG chance, because they’re one of the 12 players out of 100 who could score that.
A 0.88xG means 88 players out of 100 would score it, even a defender!
And yes, to Alan, they analyse years and years of data, including average finishers and amazing ones.
xG developed mainly from football scouting, where scouts wanted a way of measuring a player without needing to watch thousands of hours of their matches. But it’s good now because if a game is 3-0 but the xG is even, it suggests the team that lost isn’t actually as bad as the score line suggests, but they didn’t finish their chances.
It’s also good for analysing a team over a season, if a team is consistently over performing their xG and giving away lots of chances but still winning, it suggests that run will end eventually because things nearly always revert to the average.
It’s amazing how most fans support the forest tweet but pundits and media don’t. It’s like one group is paid by PGMOL and others aren’t

Regarding the intensity in the modern game, Micah is attributing it to players being injured which isnt a correlation but I think rather a result of multiple factiors? Nutrition, physical capability, mental side of things etc.
A simpler way to explain xG is for example a penalty is 0.77 because 77% of penalties are scored. Each position has been calculated to how many goals are scored out of 100 shots from that area and put into a percentage.
My old man past last year, and he was stoke. But his family was from Coventry. So he always had a soft spot for them. Stoke won, vale went down, and wow... i have struggled with football, since he left, but that weekend, cemented my belief in the beautiful game.... i miss him, but we are Stoke

@tacush3784 if they're reviewing a penalty decision like that one. The only thing they do is "keep the decision the same or change to penalty". They don't then go, "BTW it should be a corner".. which is exactly one of the cut and dry decisions VAR should be used for. One replay clears up all of these types of decisions. So simple and quick to do. Stupid really.
i agree with micah even though i think "more intense" is not the way to put it. personally i think this era of football is less intense in terms of physicality except for pace. but on the other hand i think the mental strain on players like focus and the requirement of no errors is way more draining. i personally prefer the old football where it was more chaotic but less structured where you couldn't predict every single pass made before it happened. nowadays it feels like watching a game of fifa football on console.

i'd like to make a point here on the accuracy of the VAR technique. So below there are some of my thoughts/calculations - please do correct me if you find any mistake there!
For the last 5-6 years everyone ranted about "killing the joy", breaking the natural rhythm of the game, weird interpretations of fouls, handballs, etc. - but no one raised the question of the ACCURACY of the offside measuring!
The offside should be determined (as everyone knows) in the moment of making a pass. First of all (and most of all) i'd like to point out that the moment of making a pass IS NOT A MOMENT! It doesn't have "the zero length on the time axis" - it has SOME length. And if you do some search, you're gonna find some scientific articles on measuring the TIME of a CONTACT of a ball and a foot while making a pass. This time is about 10 milliseconds - may seem not much, but still! So the question is how "far" can a body (of a potential pass receiver) move during those 10 milliseconds. If we presume a pass receiver to be running with the speed of about 10 meters per second (that's 10 000 centimeters per second), then a body moving with that speed will cover about 10 centimeters in 10 milliseconds - for many people it's about half of their foot length (and we've seen VAR having claimed that kind of offsides already)! And that's when we consider the speed of a body as a whole - but the legs themselves move even faster, so they can cover even longer distance (about 20-30 cm) during 10 ms.
I'd like to make some more explanation (just in case) about why it's a problem. Maybe it is obvious, but if a moment (as we thought of it) doesn't seem to be a moment any more (but a process progressing in time) than we have to determine a moment when it ends - in simple words, we have to make snapshot right in the moment when a ball goes right OFF the foot of a player who's making a pass! And that requires cameras that could make at least 5 frames (for "good measure") during those 10 milliseconds - meaning, the camera must do 500 frames per second! And if we don't have camera with such frame rate and work with usual TV camera, then we don't know when exactly (in terms of the phase of a contact of a ball and a foot of a passing player) we make our snapshot and of course we can't guarantee that our snapshot is showing the moment of a ball LEAVING the foot (meaning, we don't know how "wrong" is the moment of the snapshot that we take respective to the moment of a ball leaving a foot of a player who's making a pass).
Every measuring device has it's margin and "scale limitations" (i mean you can't measure micrometers with school ruler) - and the manufacturer always mentions it, points it out (on a box, on a device itself, in a manual or documentation - at least somewhere!!)! But we still didn't hear ANY numbers or values on this subjects - like they don't exist at all and the present technique of the offside measuring is accurate absolutely (and that's impossible in the universe we live in)!
And by the way - that's just a "hardware part". I'm sure there must be some inaccuracy in, how to put it,.. "making 3D conclusions by 2D picture" (taken from not the best angle sometimes). So if there are people competent in that field - you might joint the rant and share some information about that aspect.

How can you have an offside measurement that the attacker/defender can't see themselves. It takes VAR long enough to judge under present rules. Make the measurement bigger and based on foot position for both attacker and defender so the ludicrous decision of an attacker indicating to chip the ball over (as happend with Patric Bamford) and his hand going offside, it is ridiculous.
I agree with the intensity it's all about keeping the ball now the game is far slower, barely ever see wingers running past the fullbacks. Good luck making videos off 50 yard forward passes to runners.

Teams do not need to train at all when some teams are playing 3 games in 10 days all they need are massages no need whatsoever to go on to the training ground,they are more likely to get injured,because apparently train as you as if you were in a proper game so that leads to players taking out their own team mates with challenges

Gary and Alan speak about the game like dinosaurs. xG is an easy to understand quick stat. A striker that out performs their xG is an above average striker. That's all you need to know. Liverpool hired Klopp based on these stats. They showed that his Dortmund side were basically just unlucky and they were doing the right things

I was born into a Utd supporting family in 1984… I literally grew up and fell in love with football watching Cantona, Keane, Hughes, Giggs, Kanchelskis, Schmeichel, Bruce, Sharpe, Pallister… then the class of ‘92… then Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez etc.

The ref gave a penalty for the one hit at wan bissakas arm, but when var looked at the one that hit Thomas on the arm, they didn't give it. Surely var steps in and gives the penalty on Thomas or they step in and don't allow the penalty on wan bissaka. It just doesn't work

Even some United fans celebrated when Coventry made it 4-3. They were that disillusioned by what they'd seen. It's actually embarrassing how bad United have been this season. VAR isn't used in the Championship. The FA Cup is open to all teams in all leagues. It should only be used in the FA Cup when it is universal. Most of the competitors simply aren't used to it, and that's not fair. It changes how players think.

Micah was 100% correct on the intensity argument. Players back in Gary's day did a fraction of the running and could get drunk the night before without a worry.
Question- are there more injuries now or back in the day a tweak wasn’t really an injury but now your injured for a 2 week with a sprained toe
Completely agree to Gazz and Allen. The games then were far more intense and extremly hurting on the bodies, especially because of the conditions they play in and the help they got from the staff interms of recovery etc etc. These days, there is data and help for every thing (which is amazing and good and necessairy). But it is not more intense than what it was before, it is the opposite.
What mayvbe more now, than before, is the lvel of cocentration from the "entire team". Those days, you could have just the back line, golie etc staying fully concentrated, and the front players, flair up only when they get the ball. So yes, in this regard, we can say it hass changed in the mordern game. It is more mentally taxing inside the pitch now, than what it was before. But physically and injury wise, allen and gazz are 100% correct.

I stand with Micah on the intensity debate. I've watched football since the early 80s, and I've seen it evolve massively over the 4 decades I've been a football fan.
This whole line of reasoning that it was equally as intense due to bad pitches, worse diets, drinking culture, not having the advantages of sports science, etc, etc, just backs up Micah's argument. They basically admitted Micah was right but spun it in a way that suggests those excuses (reasons) somehow nullify any argument about today's game.
I loved how Alan acted like when he was playing it was like he played in Gary's era when in reality he was playing on pristine pitches (with a few exceptions when the weather was really bad), had access to sports technology/science (to a lesser degree than today, obviously) you're not THAT old, Alan ❤
The amount of injuries is alot to do with the amount of stoppages in a game. The players stop and start so much during a game. No wonder there is so many muscle injuries
No surprise that Alan had big injuries during his career. He must have wanted to play 50 games a season with no rest.

On players playing more than they use too. You go back 30 years the premier league was bigger they played 4 more games, league cup had 2 legs in more rounds, FA cup had more replays. You then go 3 subs smaller squads and smaller benches champs league has been the same for about 25 years now and only just changing to more games again. So there ain’t much in the way of games played to back in the day but players now get the best treatment and rehab. Issue with injuries maybe do with players standing around during stoppage. Everton v forest had a 10 min stop for head injury and players stood about getting cold. Could restart and easily pull a muscle

Players have to be looked after more, I would say mainly due to their now inflated price tag, hence why the game had to change and use more subs etc. Makes a lot of sense to me. It's moving from a spectator sport ot more of just a business now.

However, Doku, Nunes and Kovacic have all struggled to perform (as usual in your 1st season at city) and Bobb/Lewis are young kids. It wouldn't be fair to put the pressure of an FA fup semi on their shoulders, unless you have to.
Chelsea's physicality massively helped them. City are vulnerable, like every other team, if you dont match the opponents physically.
You cant call it luck tho. Chelsea's finishing was shocking. They werent unlucky to lose. If you dont have the ability to put the ball in the back of the net, its not unlucky. It was not good enough.

I definitely think we were lucky with the hand ball decision. To top it, it should have been a corner. Luck definitely paid its part - but the whole deal about corruption etc is pushing it too far. Jackson had a million opportunities to score and didn’t convert.

At the start Gary says about VAR ruining a great day, but they got it right?? He was offside!!! If they had got it wrong ( like they did when they let the penalty stand) then ok they would have some explaining to do... if Man Utd had a goal disallowed by VAR would Gary say the same ???
What reaction should Nottingham have then? Just take it and possibly get relegated due to poor decisions etc? And that’s from an Arsenal fan. Football is nowhere near as intense now as it was in the 90s. Those games were much more end to end rather than 8million sideways passes
Oof--chunks of the past two episodes have felt like fan-led podcasts. I know Gary's said that "It's coming home" chants and the like are made tongue in cheek, but the last episode the boys forgot the difference between rating highly and rooting for teams, and in this one, the player intensity and the game evolving and xg discussions gave me flashbacks to a couple of decades of American (baseball in particular) coverage. It's not an indictment on older players to say the game has changed in a way that may be harder--the margins are tighter, peak performance is measured differently and has to be sustained more--it can be a point of player pride to want to play at their best as often as possible and not just play.
I stopped this one and will probably finish it later, but I hope the Q&A midweek resets the converation a bit.
