LOTR is definitely the best trilogy ever . Deserved oscar for Peter.
No trilogy beats The Godfather.
Antonio Vidal The first two Godfather movies were amazing . But the third one was an absolute failure . All three LOTR movies are amazing . That's why LOTR trilogy is the best.
***** I agree that the third one is not as good as the previous parts, but it's still very good. But part one and two are so amazing that I find difficult not to say it's the best trilogy ever made. But dont get me wrong,I'm a huge LOTR fan the movie trilogy and the books.
I know your comment is old, but dark knight is the best trilogy.
TestedModz LOTR is the most critically acclaimed/applauded and award-winning movie trilogy ever.. Apart from LOTR, the "Before.." trilogy is one of the most critically applauded movie trilogy.. The Godfather trilogy would have been rated higher, if not for the third part.. The Apu trilogy by the Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray is also one of the most critically acclaimed trilogy.. Dark Knight trilogy, although very good, isn't as good as any of the trilogy mentioned before.. Filmmakers, Critics and most of the audiences all agree that it's the best movie trilogy ever.
The largest oscar sweep of all time! 11 nominations 11 won! LOTR forever!
+Frodo Sings Don't forget Ben Hur and Titanic ;)
Yeah they had many wins, but I'm talking about a clean sweep :)
+Frodo Sings clean sweep yes it is.. but, Titanic had 14 nominations and Ben Hur 12 noms, LOTR 11 noms... all of them wins 11...
He meant sound mixing not music.. but even then it was a tough choice Master and Commander and ROTK were both great in that department.
yes, I also think he meant sound as in mixing/editing. not score
He even kissed Arwen in front of Aragorn.
Elrond won't be pleased.
Weird...
Carl Anderson why is it weird?
@@carlanderson6752 yeah a tad bit
...and in front of his own wife...
Probably the most well deserved Oscar ever, Peter Jackson created a legendary trilogy for which I am forever thankful.
I think all nominees knew their chances of winning were really low.
Indeed. Counting Jackson out, who would you have given it to?
+Hassaan Mirza Weir. I remember seeing Master and Commander in theaters and I personally think it could have won a lot of its awards provided that The Return of the King didn't also come out the same year. While The Lord of the Rings is the superior film in my mind, I do find it a shame that Master and Commander had the misfortune coming out the same year.
The Android Next Door I agree.
+The Android Next Door Excellent, I'm going to be watching it soon, so that makes me even more excited. How about the others?
I think master and commander was amazing
I remember John Rhys-Davies saying that all the departments that won for RoTK would have gladly given their Oscars back so that Peter could win for best director.
ladycplum ohhh someone's watched the appendices💞😉💗
Multiple times!
ladycplum I think we are kindred spirits💗
Me too!
It was the little things man... like him telling them to pack more makeup on Gothmog's face, telling them to make the Witch King's mace bigger and heavier, telling them to animate absolutely every single movement of Andy Serkis even if they technology hadn't been invented yet to ensure his performance was captured, or having Howard Shore compose the score while it was being filmed instead of after the fact... it all added up to the larger whole.
The primary goal of film-making is to elicit emotion, and Return of The King does just that. I have seen it several times and even though I know what happens it gets me to tear up every time. Pure excellence and nothing else, a well deserved Oscar.
YES. TO ELICIT EMOTION FROM THE AUDIENCE.
You are literally the first person i have seen say that!
+notthatinnocent86 It's because i'm trying to become a filmmaker, people need to understand that's the only job from the director/screenwriter besides making the visuals. Everything relies on the story being solid.
+KING TERRIFY While eliciting emotion is obviously very important I would say the primary goal of filmmaking is to tell a story. A story that should take you on a journey and yes, elicit an emotional response from the audiences.
Much more than deserved. The Lord of the Rings unleashes magic in each of his films but condenses it to the supreme perfection in its third part, an epic conclusion that places the trilogy among the laurels of the seventh art. And I do not say because they are my favorite movies, but also because they are masterpieces, art at its best.
The fucking ending of Sam, Pippin, and Mary saying bye to Frodo man, it gets me every time
I love the expression of Fernando Meirelles at 0:58 . So happy just for been nominated 😂
me too, by the way his movie (city of god) was extraordinary, in fact if Peter Jackson hadn't won the oscar, it would be for fernando the prize
@@adolfoalbornoz3730 nope the academy did not recognize foreign movies before parasite
Yep, it was huge for that movie to be noticed at all because it feels so much grimier than usual academy fare. Plus Meirelles was only the second South American director to be nominated in that category, and fun fact: Everyone from that continent who has been nominated for best director since then has also won it.
@@DoctorXander Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro Inarritu, Alfronso Cuaron
@@ambrosaur3646 The Three Amigos.
I don't think the academy does not want to recognize fantasy movies anymore. The truth is nowadays most of them are just blockbusters with no real quality, just money makers. LOTR was a masterpiece and it takes time and dedication to be made. It was risky but thanks God it is still one of the best trilogy ever made. Even the new star wars movies are just entertaining but directors don't really make risky projects anymore :/
A girl Has no name perfectly put. While the budget is there, risk taking in terms of breaking from the norm at whatever era in time is completely gone.
The thing about these movies is that all the people involved poured their heart and soul into the production. It speaks volumes when compared to the Star Wars movies of today. Which are good movies, but not particularly memorable.
“Shape of Water” won it last year, the second fantasy film do so. There’s still some hope :)
The Dark Knight should have been nominated. Heck it should have won. Better than Slumdog Millionaire.
Well written.
Lord of the Rings was probably one of the biggest gamble in hollywood's history
1 - they were adapting a source material which wasn't much popular in the mainstream
2 - it was a fantasy movie. back in the day if a fantasy or historic movie doesn't go in the popcorn jacker route with all the cliché it was most likely get ignored by the people (not to mention it was very rare when you see a fantasy movie to be nominate and win 10 oscars. this movie changed everything)
3 - they gave 300 millions and helm the project to a director who was at that time only known for cheap New Zealand horror movies
4 - all the actors strictly relied on the director, and only did what he said
One of the VERY FEW times the Oscars actually got it right.
Fact
Tom Cruise is The Cute Cruz
So cute baby
Lmao. Have you seen City of God?
@@sayanroy6395 yes, great movie but still this was Peter Jackson's award. No movie till date beats the amount of hard work and vision he put into creating the LOTR films
I have the honor to say that The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was the first film I saw in a movie theater, seems like it was yesterday, I was 8 years old :)
how? the film is rated 12
alasdair burgess I know, I remember my uncle telling me "If they ask just say you're 13" (I always have been taller) but I really enjoyed that film! I was really amazed
Ok i suppose we've all done that in some point in our lives
That is an AWESOME first movie, you're lucky!
Damn . I couldn't see it in theater. I never knew what was the fuss all around the world until I saw it and then never lifted my eyes off for a single day. It is currently playing as I writing the comment .. A privilege to be born in an era when this got made. Not only does it appeal to the pop culture elements of cinema but it is an artistic masterpiece that feels something else from Cinema... And to get nominations for every single year .. And above all thanks Professor Tolkien for creating the literary masterpiece..
Tom Cruise: "Hey Peter, cast me in your next film!"
Kristine Silmaro
TOM CRUISE = LEGEND
Where is Peter Jackson now ?
Sarah Smith still no Oscar :D
@@scottbarkley496 I'd say Peter Jackson is in New Zealand enjoying having a net worth of $500,000,000. He is one of the most successful directors and producers of all time. In seven to eight films, he has managed to produce box office returns equal to Tom Cruise's entire career. And, oh yes, his films have be awarded 11+ Oscars. Beyond that, he co-founded one of the leading visual effects studios in the world and is largely responsible for the sustained economic success the New Zealand film industry has seen over the last twenty years as well as the continued employment of tens of thousands of people.
@@eddielopez2373 couldn't have said it better.
He would've been good in King Kong.
I went nuts when Peter Jackson got that Oscar. Such a well deserved win.
You could see how Tom was like "well, this is no surprise" ;)
The Oscars just aren't the same without LOTR. The academy recognized the fantasy-genre for the first time, and that was just fantastic! Nowadays, Oscars are only given to historical dramas......but I hope to see more by peter Jackson's hand win the Oscars again some day! Maybe with The Silmarillion? ;)
But if it was up to me, the entire main-cast from LOTR would've won an award back then, because it was without a doubt, the best, most flawless and consistent cast in cinematic history :D
Tolkien family has forbidden anyone to touch the rest of J.R.R Tolkien's work
***** Haha, you sure seem like quite an expert =_=
***** Why?
Charles Heiston is right.
Black Lives Matter are pushing for recognition of black movies and Hollywood has succumbed to political correctness. Fantasy is finished!
this man. this man i cant describe it. a genius.
Naioka.seiuli.
@Ahmet Emir Bumin Aksoy the Hobbit movies sadly seem to have been far too underplanned and out of Peter Jackson's hands. From the under 12 months of pre-production, to the last minute leave of the original direction, along with the studio meddling with making it 3 movies instead of one or two.
I would love to see a remake with the same actors (casting was mostly phenomenal), but a much more contained story more true to the book.
100% deserved. I remember walking out of Return of the Ring in complete disbelief in how a fantasy movie could be so goddamn incredible
it's not fantasy movie.....it was really on the planet several thousand years ago
When you win an oscar and kiss Liv Tyler on the lips.
Gustavo Lopez lucky bastard
He got so caught in the moment he kissed her ahahah must have been awkward later,he probably didn't even realize it ahaha

It’s not true that his parents didn’t see it. They saw it from heaven
I bet his parents would be proud
We should thank you Peter for bringing hope
D oritos or destroying it for the poor people that worked on city of god..
@@danielcorcoran6101 I look back at those years and think holy damn! If all those movies were released today, they'd win Oscars! Lotr had proper films nominated against it.
Still on 2020 and tears of joy for this AWESOME PIECE OF ART! Thnks so much PJ and all the gang for bringing us the BEST ADAPTATION OF THE GREAT TOLKIEN'S LEGENDARIUM!
Mystic River, Master & Commander, Lost in Translation, City of God and LotR... What a year and what great movies.
his speach is so heart warming....
One of the best films ever.
La mejor
Nobody deserves it more than this man!
city of god was an absolutely incredible movie, but yeah the scale of the return of the king made it pretty much impossible for anybody else to win
Not to mention Mystic River, Lost in Translation, and Master & Commander. Five really great films, not a dud to be seen!
@@zingzangspillip1 I agree! It's been a few years since we've seen actual priceless movies at the Oscars.. Well I guess Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" was good. But nothing as epic as LOTR trilogy.
The LOTR trilogy is so visually stunning & beautifully done! Props Jackson!
Ah man, City of God is a masterpiece, one of the best movies ever made....but he was facing LotR Return of the King.....damn.
But STILL, i think City of God should've won Best Editing.
The brazilian movie?
Kylo Ren Yeah
+1504Shawn It's nice to know you AMERICAN guys like that movie.
sorry for my bad english
I agree with you, City Of God is a masterpiece. But to even get a nomination against the might of Hollywood is a major achievement.
Zero chance against Peter Jackson.
2-29-04 was seriously one of the greatest nights of my life. At age 15, I had my Oscar ballot, and during the three-hour show, I checked off eleven of the most well-deserved Oscars in the history of cinema. As young as I was, I knew that something like this may never happen again, and I was lucky enough to witness it. "Lord of the Rings" is one of the only pieces of art that changed my life, and to see it receive what it so overwhelmingly deserved that night was too exciting for words.
I wanna go back to these times
hey
The 2000s were the best
You & me both Brit.
His parents died meanwhile he was filming the trilogy? My god, that is sad.
Diego Graciano Nope. He specifically said that his parents died a few years before he started making LOTR.
Diego Graciano But it is still sad, of course. :(
His mother died two days before the premiere of the Fellowship of the Ring. It's sad that she couldn't saw his son win. 😢
Willian Simanca that is tragic omg :( so sad!
Willian Simanca she couldn’t saw his own son win? Don’t you mean she couldn’t see her own son win?
As a brazilian i must say... City of god is a huge movie but LOTR is just the best of all!!!!
That's ME!
Titanic, Lord of the rings, benhur till today only 3 movies to win 11 oscars each masterpiece
I’d go as far as saying that this is one of the most well-deserved Oscars of all time. The entirety of this massive trilogy was on his shoulders for 6 years and he never buckled under the weight.
Una trilogía para dominarlos a todos
the best film ever.
This man literally has everything it takes to be the greatest director of all time. Above else, courage, vision and limitless passion for making movies.
Bill and Joan... God rest you souls and thank you for bringing this amazing and wonderful man to this world. Without Peter Jackson, the world would be alot poorer place for sure. You may or may not like his movies, but he is one hell of a unique person and director. One of the most deserving Best Director wins EVER.
For those of you who dont know B and J were Petes parents.
Peter Jackson is my favourite film maker. He has totally inspired me to get into the film industry. His relentless passion and drive for his films just prove that anything is possible if you invest your heart, mind and soul into it. A true inspiration. No one else could have made The Lord of the Rings the way he did. This oscar is truly deserved, well done Peter.
What an inspired lineup! Surely one of the best in the last few decades.
Back when winning an Oscar actually meant something.
LOTR is the greatest movie trilogy in history. And it deserved every dollar, and award it ever won. Truly a timeless classic that will be remember for decades to come.
Think about this, I can’t remember many sequels being nominated for Oscars anymore, this is truly a sight to see
Dune 2...
All hail Peter Jackson " The Genius".
GOD DAMN what a year for movies
City of god is such an amazing picture. However Peter Jackson deserved this.
Excellent director.
I swear, if Peter Jackson didn't win the Oscar that night...
Rofi Islam dude we would have rioted worse than those bitchy crybabies because Hillary didn’t win
@@Bus_Driver117 It Is What It Is. Happy with that?
Rickard Kaufman why yes. Yes I was
@@Bus_Driver117 So you understood that Trump is also bad. Hillary is a war criminal. No doubt. One simply needs to look at what happened to Libya before and after the US intervened in 2011 turning it from one of the rich oil countries in North Africa to a slave port. Not trying to romanticize Gaddafi as he was a dictator of course but you get my point. Now back to Trump. Reacting to 160K dead from coronavirus with a Columbia University study saying 30K deaths could've been avoided by saying, "It Is What It Is" has to be callous and not empathetic to human life. The guy has to go. Sadly, Biden who was considered by Joe Rogan "cognitively declined" is know the opponent. What to do? Just wait and see what happens next. I don't live in America but seeing what has happened with first-hand accounts is not only troubling but devastating. I have relatives in the Mid- West in Colorado so it also troubles me when I think about them.
He is so adorable.. no one in hollywood or anywhere could do Tolkien .. its the passion
He is the legend in the cinema history directors and productions. None can compare to him.
Tom Cruise seems really empathetic. Peter is a genius and has a bit of Aspergers (like my nephew) and I think Tom sensed that. Or he saw the camera and acted like he cared at the end. I prefer to think Tom is a nice guy.
After missing out two years in row Peter finally did, and it was so well deserved. These movie are works of art, And Peter is a total gentleman.
Por las tres pelis le hubieran dado
Peter, we want to see those deleted scenes, unused for the Extended edition of the Lord of the Rings :
- Fellowship of the Ring : additional footage from the Battle of the Last Alliance (and maybe add Lee Pace’s Thranduil into it), an extended Council of Elrond (dialogue from the Council of Elrond, such as Gandalf explaining how Sauron forged the One Ring)
- The Two Towers : Arwen and Elrond visiting Galadriel at Lothlórien, Conversation between Elrond and Arwen in a library in Rivendell, after Arwen decides to wait for Aragorn. Elrond leaves saying “You gave away your life’s grace. I cannot protect you anymore”
- Return of the King : further epilogue footage, with endings for Legolas and Gimli, Éowyn and Faramir's wedding and Aragorn's death and funeral. Also, to give context for Wormtongue killing Saruman, and Legolas in turn killing Wormtongue, it was to be revealed Wormtongue poisoned Théodred. The final scene cut was Aragorn having his armour fitted for the Battle of the Black Gate by the trilogy's armourers, which was the final scene filmed during principal photography, and others.
We know you stated that you would like to include some of these unused scenes in a future "Ultimate Edition" home video release, also including out-takes.
It would be great if you would be able to revisit the cut of all 6 movies in the near future, do an "ultimate cut" of the 6 movies and integrate those scenes I mentioned back in the movies (instead of deleted scenes). You would also be able to reshoot the "Bilbo finding the Ring" scene from Fellowship of the ring, replace gollum from the shadowy scene in the Mines of Moria (from Fellowship), add more Balrog vs Gandalf fight (as you wished in the first place when you thought about the sequence but you didn't have the means and budget for it at the time), integrate Thranduil in the Battle of the Last Alliance, etc. (as did George Lucas with Star Wars afterwards).
Cheers! :D
Lotr Hobbit Right! And also Arwen was fighting at Helmsdeep in the Two Towers :-)
It's cool to see such successful people representing us here in NZ. :) So proud
This was such a magic night for him, but due to this trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy, so many of him previous amazing movies are unjustly overlooked by so many people. To me, the best example was his previous Oscar-nominated movie Heavenly Creatures, which basically put him and Fran Walsh, who were virtually unknown until that movie, on the movie industry map, movie that brought one of the most tragic, but also most legendary stories from history of their native New Zealand to the entire world. Also, they made alot more amazing movies during their career, but they have mostly fallen into obscurity after LOTR and The Hobbit trilogies.
He also helped introduce movie industry to New Zealand's South Island - literally the biggest movie studio in the entire world with endless possibilities for shooting virtually any kind of movies.
We love you Peter! I’m so grateful that I was at such a playful age to be able to see these at the cinema ! You created some magical memories for me and my family, as we all went to see them together 🙏🏻
*_Peter Jackson, the only man who can socially dominate Tom Cruise on a stage_*
I'm maybe one of the most fannatics of LOTR...both of books and movies. And we all have to realize that the books always come first. I mean always! Reading the books was an amazing journey for me 10 years ago and watching the fantastic movies of Peter Jackson just made me relive this journey again
I wish cinematographer Andrew Lesnie could win for Best cinematography for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King!
+rexcrossnet He won for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. IMO the best shot one of the trilogy.

Even if Return of the King didn’t win Best Picture, Peter Jackson absolutely needed to get the Oscar for Best Director. A monumental effort for what was deemed impossible just a decade before.
how strong was the lineup in 2004?! 5 undisputed classics in my opinion

The importance of cinema, and art in general, does not come from academic or intellectual appreciation, but from the personal relevance to the public, with each of the souls sitting in the seats, the right film at the right time can change a life forever.
