How once you do that, you're never the same again. It just happens to take place in a fictional world with fictional creatures, but the story is more poignant than many "serious" movies. I remember walking out of the movie theatre with my wife after watching ROTK the first time, and telling her that if there was any justice in the world, this film should break Academy Award records in terms of wins. At that time I added a Best Supporting Actor for Sean Astin and counted 12 nominations/wins in a clean sweep. It was close enough but eventually the Academy snubbed Astin, which is a shame because he was phenomenal.
My local movie theater did a LOTR extended edition marathon last year with 60 minute breaks between each film to get food and some fresh air. The entire theatre were so invested, everyone laughed and cheered and clapped at the right places. We had all obviously watched it a million times already. It was a crazy comfortable environment, just a big bunch of obsessed nerds watching their fave films together. It was the same theatre where the world premiere for ROTK was held. The chairs have little plaques where the cast, directors, producers etc all sat on the arm rests. Man, I hope they do that again soon. I could do it every year haha.
I wouldn't mind, if a version extremely more accurate with the books, i.e. Sauron once defeated by Elendil and an elf Lord, mortally wounding the two warriors, and Isildur chopping the ring off after the battle; instead of Sauron stepping on a sword, breaking it, then reaching out to Isildur to get his finger chopped off. Love the films, wish the best for any future films
Fellowship was quite beautiful and stands out from its sequels, but Return of the King is everything I think a film should be with an incomparable balance of components.
PJ's "the Lord of the Rings" is the best film ever made. No, I won't say "return of the king" because it's not really three movies. It's one movie, that's like 10+ hours long, so they had to cut it and split it. Just like Tolkien's book, which was originally one book, that had to be split into three because they wouldn't print it so big. It's one and the same story, that's shot and made all at the same time. Return of the King got all the glory because it was a grand finale of the entire story. But the buildup is what made the finale great. All 3 movies got these 11 Oscars in my opinion. And they deserved more! This IS the best film ever made. Nothing else comes close.
Lord of the Ring was an EXTRAORDINARY work. Deep, archetypal, complex. It's one of the greatest films in history and deserves to win all the awards ever.
Andy Serkis should have gotten a nomination. In fact he should have gotten the award. People still don't understand why he didn't but I think it may have been the fact the The Academy just didn't understand how much of that performance was him and his acting rather than just cgi.
These are the nominees for Best Motion Picture: The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is a real miracle: three wonderful and astonishing movies, three critically acclaimed masterpieces, regarded among the greatest, most beautiful and most influential films ever made. Absolutely perfect in every part - direction, screenplay, cinematography, soundtrack, acting, editing, visual effects, art direction, costumes - and full of Poetry and Beauty. Every fragment of them is pure Art. Peter Jackson and his team were kissed by divine grace: they managed to transform one of the greatest books ever into three Classic movies, three monuments of the Cinema history. We are so lucky to have been able to witness the making of these masterpieces. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy will be loved forever.

+Ian O'Hara Sean Astin so deserved to be nominated for supporting actor, and he would have definitely won it!! maybe the academy wanted to give some other films a chance haha
+Johnny Phesto Ian McKellen was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 74th Academy Awards; he's the only actor in the trilogy to get such nomination. Even in the Fellowship, they had 9 main characters and several secondary characters. I completely agree that throughout the entire trilogy, there were too many actors to narrow down who should get nominated for Best Supporting Actor/Actress.
When I look at the Lord of the Rings trilogy which I have seen about 10 times now, I see the cast and crew who put their blood, sweat and tears into these films, especially Peter Jackson. You watch the appendices of the films and you see just how hard everyone worked. This trilogy is the greatest trilogy of all time.
The return of the king had the most perfect ending I have ever experienced in a movie. An ending is just as important as the beginning and not one single second was mediocre in between. Truly a masterpiece and Peter Jackson’s magnum opus.
Absolutely. Fun fact, in the 30s and 40s they often handed out the Acting awards for last. They did Best Picture last in '45, but not in '46-48. However, they realized over the years that it was fitting to have Best Picture last. Such as in '47 when the papers reported to anticlimactic ending with: "Fontaine settled the highly contested Best Actor race: the winner was Fredrich March for "The Best Years of Our Lives". March was in New York and his Oscar was accepted by Cathy O'Donnell, who played Harold Russel's girlfriend in the movie. And that was the show" and the year after it was reported that audience members were starting to leave the theatre after Best Picture despite having the acting awards left. So they actually have done a different format and learned that it doesn't work. Looks like they have completely forgotten about the failures of the 40's.
Still annoys me that Fellowship of the Ring lost to A Beautiful Mind in this category. It's great they recognised the trilogy in the end but should have bagged at least two Best Picture awards.
***** I have actually never seen Chicago, but given that The Lord of the Rings films are my favorite films of all time, I doubt that it even stands a chance of not being crushed by the masterpiece that is The Two Towers.
Just finished watching the trilogy. I've watched it almost a decade ago while I was a kid. And then i didn't quite realise the entire story and how deep it could get. Now after completely understanding the plot and seeing the mindblowing visuals ,I do have to say this is a ONE OF A KIND movie!! No movie has ever been able to keep up the standards that this franchise has set. One Movie to rule them all...!!
I just watched the extended edition of the trilogy and also watched a few extras on the DVD (behind the scenes, filming etc) - it's very easy to see why the movies were successful - the amount of effort and attention put into the project was mind boggling. one example - They made real weapons, armour, prosthetics etc for the armies on screen and a lot of the combatants shown on screen were real people - this has certainly helped in keeping the realism - the movies have aged really well even 20 years on! Another thing to think about - the total budget for the trilogy was $300 million - it's incredible how they managed to pull that off ! There probably won't ever be a production like this again - seeing how the movie industry has gone CGI crazy nowadays.

This movie was a win for our society and a reminder of better days. So grateful this movie existed when I did and just so happy these wonderful folks who gave so much to us got the recognition they deserve.
Birdman is fictional so finnaly we get a new film that isn't set in a historical period or based on a true story winning best picture. Slumdog Millionare I think was the last one.
Channel Blaino: Birdman is not a purely fictional movie: The main character is an actor who used to be famous with an animal-themed superhero role, now his career is downhill and he's finding a way to revive it. It resembles Michael Keaton.
Honestly, nothing that night stood a chance. Lord of the Rings is the cinematic epic of our time, and we will likely not see anything like it anytime soon.
For some reason I just thought about the what the people who directed Seabiscuit might have been thinking. They couldn't have had their hopes up. "This is the film that culminates three of the greatest books ever written and one of the greatest stories ever told. We talked about a horse. Good luck everyone."
If LoTR hadn't come out with their final movie that year it would've definitely gone to Master and Commander. That was an awesome movie, and I wish they'd make more.
I feel Elijah Wood and Sean Astin should've been nominated and won Oscars. Sean Penn and Tim Robbins were good though, don't get me wrong, but Wood and Astin gave there best performances of the trilogy in Return of the King. But that's just me...
come on, there were more movies people watched after that. You could argue Slumdog Millionaire or the Kings Speech were the last movies that gained a lot of attention. Both around 400 million revenue or what its called in English. Some of my favorite movies like the Departed came after it
I was a huge proponent of ROTK and the day after the Oscars, had a great laugh at my boss who thought it was a crock that the movie took all the Oscars. I asked if he had even seen the movie and he admitted he had never seen any of them. I don't know how you could not see a movie and be so opposed to it winning.
One of the Academy members was interviewed (Lynn Redgrave, I believe) and stated that she votes but never takes the time to see all of the films. I couldn't believe it.
Totally deserved. It's a classic, it's a masterpiece, gold standard for fantasy and in general movies. In my opinion the greatest movie trilogy to date.
There's "winning best picture" and then there's "WINNING BEST PICTURE". After the entire journey they went through making this trilogy, and after being snubbed in the two previous years, there's a best picture oscar trophy right there in Peter Jackson's hand that actually feels like it is well earned. You breath a sigh of relief yourself when you see them winning it because you acknowledge the inhuman amount of talent and hard work that was making these movies. Most well deserved oscar of the last 20 or so years, if not ever.
I don't think they were "snubbed" necessarily. I think the voters knew the ROTK was going to win best picture, and seeing as how they knew it was basically one long movie, they didn't want to give one movie three best pictures even though they were definitely deserving of it.
the fact it was a FANTASY movie that did this incredible achievement speaks of the absolute film masterpiece TROK (and the trilogy as a whole) is. I and millions of other fans will be forever grateful to the wonderful team that gifted us with such an amazing experience.
Peter Jackson pulled off an absolute masterpiece. Perfect story, perfect execution, perfect timing. What an absolute GIFT he and his crew gave the world with this movie. No other movie stood a chance. Really sad that the Tolkien estate never embraced these movies they are works of art.
The Tolkien Estate must not have seen the movie(s) or understood how it would encourage book sales on into the future. (I was inspired to read the books from having lived in a house in Hollywood called "Rivendell", named by the resident college students who read the books soon after they were first published.
Elijah Wood stated that Jack Nicholson walked up to him at another event and asked what happened at the end because he walked out. You'd think that actors would appreciate great films in any genre. LOTR: TROTK is perhaps that greatest fantasy film ever made.
Hands down is the greatest film trilogy of all time. Return of the King was the best film of that decade. It broke alot of records even being the first and only fantasy film to win best picture. I am so glad that this film fell inline with my childhood, oh the memories such good memories.
Its telling how most of them didnt start a big "celeb carrier". They are all so down to earth, they dont care about big fame, they just love doing what they do.

About some guys returning jewelry.
Id argue its a better compliment to say its a successful trilogy. to split a story into 3 separate films that all hold their own and have all 3 tell a cohesive story is pretty darn impressive especially something on the scale of a war fantasy. Much more challenging a feat in film than in writing
@@rozz1864 It's a 12 hour epic divided into three parts of some guys returning jewelry through great battles, speeches, monologues, dramatic scenes, and excellent CGI that nobody could think of. And to think, the director of these films was making B-grade horror comedies.

He was great but stood no chance to Tim Robbins

My local movie theater did a LOTR extended edition marathon last year with 60 minute breaks between each film to get food and some fresh air. The entire theatre were so invested, everyone laughed and cheered and clapped at the right places. We had all obviously watched it a million times already. It was a crazy comfortable environment, just a big bunch of obsessed nerds watching their fave films together. It was the same theatre where the world premiere for ROTK was held.
Tolkien's novel was actually split into 6 books, written in three parts.

I just love how Steven Spielberg announced the Best Picture -- truly, "a clean sweep"
The return of the king had the most perfect ending I have ever experienced in a movie. An ending is just as important as the beginning and not one single second was mediocre in between. Truly a masterpiece and Peter Jackson’s magnum opus.
"there's a reason why the say best motion picture for LAST" You heard that academy? Spielberg said that.
Absolutely. Fun fact, in the 30s and 40s they often handed out the Acting awards for last. They did Best Picture last in '45, but not in '46-48. However, they realized over the years that it was fitting to have Best Picture last. Such as in '47 when the papers reported to anticlimactic ending with:
"Fontaine settled the highly contested Best Actor race: the winner was Fredrich March for "The Best Years of Our Lives".
Best picture should always be last. It was a fool to have best actor award to close the show at the 2021 Oscar.

The Members of the Academy are only interested in generics.
Most deserved, lol, alot of Awards are deserved. You just watch too few movies
It had some very stiff competition not like it was an easy win
I don't think they were "snubbed" necessarily. I think the voters knew the ROTK was going to win best picture, and seeing as how they knew it was basically one long movie, they didn't want to give one movie three best pictures even though they were definitely deserving of it.
the fact it was a FANTASY movie that did this incredible achievement speaks of the absolute film masterpiece TROK (and the trilogy as a whole) is. I and millions of other fans will be forever grateful to the wonderful team that gifted us with such an amazing experience.
