I don't think some people realize how difficult it can be to care for an aging cat. If a cat doesn't want to do something, it's NOT going to do it. You'd be surprised how nimble even an elderly cat can be when wiggling away from you and the claw clippers or pills. You have to pick your battles while trying to do what's best for them and their quality of life. I had to sneak cutting a claw here and there because my elderly cat would only allow me to once before getting defensive. Sometimes his claws would get long enough to curl into the paw pad before i was able to take care of it. It can be really hard to feel like you're always upsetting and stressing out your cat that you truly love and are just trying to help. It's always shades of gray, never just black and white.
One of my rescue cats is probably 12 or so; her exact age is lost to history. She is mostly deaf and has hyperthyroidism and a heart murmur, but she is a total sweetheart. I will freely admit to spoiling her, just a bit, because I don't know how long she'll keep blessing me with her little life.
My Bosco is 22 years old, and he doesn't tolerate much, at his age. He's too old to groom himself or care for his claws, and doesn't like me to do it for him. I do what I can, when I can. I agree that senior cats present their own difficulties!
Same here. My 20 year old was easier to clip as she got older, and i had to brush her but she was a shorthair. We adopted another lady at 11 (now 13) and i do check her claws, and we tag team clipping her dew claws, to get her used to it for when we might need to do all of the claws. She doesn't love it but we established enough trust to quickly get the dew claws done every few months.
Yeah, it is hard. All of mine are seniors. Two of them have daily medications, and monthly medications, in addition to the regular flea medications. And diabetes is not easy to manage in cats.
Watching this before a surgery. Ultimately soothing. Thank you for the purr mic. Look how much Boots still loves you at the final brush! You are awesome.
Charlie may be a whisker chewer. I've known a few of those. We had a gorgeous goofball of a boy Siamese who would sit in a doorway and lean into the door jamb to bend his whiskers towards his own mouth and then chew, chew, chew. We were worried it was a stress thing, but the vet said some cats just like to chew whiskers. His mom and sister, who also lived with us their whole lives, would smack him in the head if he tried to chew on their whiskers, so he came up with his own method of getting his tasty whisker fix. Barney was a good boy. Dopey as they come, but such sweetie.
Wow I've had cats for over 25 years and never heard of that before. Not their own whiskers anyway! I'm not surprised his relatives smacked him on the head. Siamese are more prone to pica though from what I understand. I had a moggy who was obsessed with chasing her tail, and acting like it wasn't attached. She was perfectly healthy but my ex husband wanted me to take her to the vet, I said to him and what exactly would I say? My cat's weird? In my experience they're all weird!
@@CallieCEntertainment she was an indoor cat so had never had an accident and was as I said perfectly healthy. Not everything has a medical explanation, it was just her favourite 'toy' for a while. I did end up mentioning it once at the vets and they checked her and said lots of cats do it as their tail and their siblings tails are their first toy. She mostly grew out of it when she learned to play fetch, but on odd occasions would still play with her tail. As I said some cats are just a little weird, all of mine have had their own little quirks. My current kitty loves shredding cardboard. Give her a box and she's in heaven as she gets to sit in a box whilst tearing it up. She never eats it, she kindly spits it out for me to clear up 😆 Her name is Luna but she's known as Loopy Lu. She also growls when there's a knock on the door if we are chilling or it's dark out, and if any animals dare to enter her garden she's at the window banging her paws on it and swearing at them.
My dog used to roll herself smoothed to one side and chew on the length of her ears. Being part cocker spaniel, I loved the long ears but she hated them. Took ages to catch her do it before we figured out why they always ended up uneven. Animals do some strange things!
This one hit pretty hard. My 19 year old was a major shedder and would come *running* when she saw the Furminator - she *loved* it. Being able to trim her claws while she never stopped purring has been one of my life's greatest accomplishments. 😂 Wishing Boots a life full of love and salami!
Such an adorable, good natured pussycat. Your comments, while grooming it, is clever and entertaining. My wife and I bought a house that came with a Sumo wrestler sized American Short hair. He was sooo affectionate, bright, & loyal. We used to wipe his butt a lot since access to it was impossible for him. Why the previous family did not want to keep him is a mystery, because that cat was the best companion animal we ever had. We miss him even 18 years later.
@@pliktl I agree there's no reason to abandon an animal, especially in an empty house, but unfortunately those programs don't really get enough traction to work well. At least near me, you either dump a cat outside or get denied by shelters/programs to surrender because they're full. it's really sad and probably why a lot of people just abandon pets :o(
her nails seem like they’d be difficult to cut at home too with how thick they are, my cat’s nail clippers def wouldnt be able to get through that 😳 im glad the owners were able to send her in before they got worse

@williamcainjr8496 Lol! I saw a YT video of a dog gripping the door frame to get out of having a bath. I haven't seen a cat doing it yet, but I totally believe it. 🤣
I read this too fast, at first I thought it was a duck soup dispenser. Then I thought, wow that’s neat, I have never seen a duck soup dispenser. I bet that cats just love it.😂
Thick claws are very common in older cats because they don’t use their scratching posts as much, whether from arthritis or another reason. We’ve had several super seniors & they all eventually developed thick claws.
Is it more common for strictly INDOOR cats to develop arthritis? My black domestic short hair is 14 and has been an indoor/outdoor cat (always inside overnight) for probably the last 12 years... Luckily he's only ever required vet visits for regular shots, seems to be as spry as ever, and doesn't appear to have any problems with self cleaning. Is there a chance that regular exercise of hopping fences etc. actually prevents joint issues? I also notice that I only ever need to clip his FRONT claws. He doesn't have a scratching post, or damage furniture, so I figure just running around outside is enough to keep the back claws from becoming overgrown.
I love watching these videos with my mom. We never get tired of it, its so satisfying and comforting to see such a passionate and gentle groomer. You’re the best ever thank you for sharing your work and taking good care of people’s pets❤❤
Poor Charlie. Lying there, getting shaved, wondering where he dropped his dignity. Just a joke. These cats really are just lovely. Even mad Charlie with his cat-itude. He's awesome. ❤
Seriously, some cats are horribly embarrassed when they are shaved, personality can change (and not for the better). Both my daughter and I (at different times) had cats professionally shaved due to the information that they would tolerate the heat much much better (totally indoor cats, but we tried to do what we were instructed to do.) My daughter's cat cried and hid for weeks after the shave. Plus her beautiful long hair never did grow back the same. My cat just hid for a few days, but the beautiful shaded stripes in his hair also did not grow back - he became just one color with no stripes after the shave. I highly do not recommend shaving a long-haired cat IF it can possibly be avoided. (The cats were professionally groomed/shaved at different and unrelated facilities.)
The curling nails can be an indication of arthritis, making it difficult to use a scratching post. When I had my big cat, very fluffy, shaved, I liked clean paws, and a smooth neck. It helped with his skin condition and the litter problem. I adopted him as an obese cat, and while he lost some weight he was always fluffy. And no, he didn’t over eat at my house, he under exercised
I inherited an overweight cat. He loved pretending to be a rock in the garden, or a pillow inside. I did see him once clear a fence when a neighbour's cat came spoiling for a fight. Until that moment I would have laughed at anyone who suggested he could clear that fence.
@@selinesbeau 😂❤ I used to worry about my young cat picking on my older, lager, diabetic cat. Then I saw him actually run and decided the occasional chase did him good. 😊
@@laineymcd4074 We had a large Sumo tabby. We got a small dog harness for her and put her outside on a lead. The vet had suggested this to get her exercise, because she was like your cat and liked to imitate a pillow. She could jump really high trying to catch birds, but would act like climbing the stairs was too much.
Had a beauty like this one named Misty. My grumpy old lady, I miss her. She lived to her 20s and was a chonky girl when she passed, the vet was shocked at how old she was because she looked so healthy. Took a piece of my heart with her. I love my kitten, and I’d give anything to have another year with Misty.
I've lost a bit of my heart with every pet loss since I was little... Well, other than the mice but they just didn't care about me!! It's amazing I'm still alive.
Just an FYI to the owner ( my cat has been a diabetic for 7 yrs) hair loss is very common in cats who's diabetes is not under control (it isn't always a sign) they might want to do a curve test and consult a vet on his insulin dosage. cats are extremely hard to regulate especially when they are obese
@@alisong2328 I am so sorry to hear that, cats are tricky to see the signs, I took mine to the vet when he was peeing on our beds thinking he had a bladder infection, I was shocked when it turned out he was diabetic, I too caught it late and he already developed polyneuropathy and it was a very long and difficult process to bring him back, 7 yrs later he still doesn't have a lot of feeling in his feet and he's not controlled, we have tried everything from different insulins to the libre sensor (he's an ambassador for it at his vet, as he's the first cat there to try it) he's still not controlled but we have learned how to handle it through internists and specialists. It's alot of hard work and tears but when you love your pets you will try anything
If you're referring to the thinning hair behind her eyes (at the beginning of the video), that is pretty common in cats and is a form of alopecia (preauricular alopecia).
@@tamil9542 Well, diabetic cats are still cats. If it's already common in cats that aren't diabetic, then it might be unrelated to diabetes even if diabetic cats have it too ;) These cats were describes as elderly, and it is common for elderly cats to have a thinner coat above the eyes - not unlike how humans get thinner hair as we grow old. That spot above the eyes is also where the cats have their "this is mine" scent glands, which they like to rub on things they lay claim to, which means the fur there gets some additional wear and tear so to speak. You're right that hair loss *can* be a diabetes symptom, but it isn't always related to diabetes (and from my understanding it's not commonly because of diabetes). It's important to look for additional symptoms to narrow down the actual cause, *Here's a list of additional things that can cause hair loss in cats, in case some other cat owner is reading this and worry about their fur baby:* stress genetics excessive grooming inflammatory disease a hormonal disorder bacterial, fungal or parasitic infection protein deficiency allergies It's a long list, but with most of those things there should be *additional symptoms* to look for to narrow it down. And again, *sometimes cats just get thin fur from normal aging.* Unlike humans, cats don't seem to have gendered patterns of hair loss, but the thinning is easier to spot on cats with light skin and short dark fur.
Omigosh, Boops' face when you were holding her scruff in the bath. She's so cute! That's a great cat right there. Charlie was super patient after the bath part. Both pretty good cats!
That is very interesting information about cat breeds! I always found it funny that dogs are typically bred for a specific purpose or reason, and a LOT of cat breeds I look up, it starts out like "Farmer John went out to his barn one day and found that his cat had birthed a litter of freakish kittens, and he thought, I will breed these on purpose!" xD
I'm more of a cat person but enjoy your dog grooming videos. I get the impression that you're more of a dog person and really enjoyed how sweet you were to these kittys. Thank you!
Boots and Charlie are lovely senior cats. Loved hearing Boots purr. Charlie seemed more scared than anything else. Here in the UK we call non-pedigree cats Moggies. I have 8 beautiful rescue Moggies. Four are gorgeous black cats, two are Tabby brothers, one is a handsome, large Tuxedo and the other is a lovely (and extremely loving) Ginger and White cat. Our Ginger and White started putting on a lot of weight. He was about 6 months old when I was asked to foster him (foster fail - again). He would eat his own food really fast then push the other cats out of the way and eat theirs. We fed him separately from the rest of the cats until he came down in weight to a normal size for his age. He was fine for a while then he started doing the same again, so we fed him separately for a couple of months until he lost the weight. This time he got the message and now eats his own and doesn't push our other cats away from their food. I think with some rescue cats, they don't know where their next meal is coming from so they eat everything they see. Our cat is 6 years old now and although he is a chunky cat, he is not too overweight. It is something we keep our eye on because we want to try and avoid diseases like diabetes and arthritis in later life. He also knows he won't go hungry with us as they have regular mealtimes.
You're my biggest inspiration to go into this career. Thank you for all that you do. Thanks to inspo I started my own pet sitting/house sitting and watering gardens kind of business but plan to incorporate this into the future. ❤

Have you ever had to wait in a waiting room for a whole hour for your appointment, and then just as your name is called, you realize you have to go the bathroom? I'll bet that's how poor old Charlie felt. LOL. 😹
Luckily my 14 year old black domestic shorthair has only ever been to the veterinary for regular shots... I manage to trim his claws at home, and have nursed his wounds from the occasional 'turf war'. The problem with BLACK cats is it tends to hide any blood, so you don't even realize they're been injured until you try to touch in them in a spot that got cut, and they suddenly get angry for no obvious reason. His biggest problem is the occasionally EYE INFECTION, always the result of getting in a swatting session with a neighborhood cat, but luckily a few ant-biotic eye drops always clear up the cloudiness in a less than a week! He's also still able to self-clean, as far as I can tell. Fur always looks shiny/smooth, and he smells nice, so I'll probably just end up bathing him in the shower if it's ever necessary. He does sometimes go out in the rain, so hopefully that means he won't be scared of some soap and water :) Which breed do people find to the be the HEALTHIEST felines? I love cats, but just HATE the idea of dropping a few grand on some treatment that might or might not work, and the cat ending up with a significantly diminished quality of life anyway. It might be cruel to say, but 15 years isn't bad for a cat, and kittens are nearly free... So if I there's ever a $10K Vet Bill, decisions might needs to be made. And don't talk to be about insurance, in my experience Pet Insurance is almost useless for anything you'd REALLY need it for.

I agree, Boots is really sweet. I grew up with dogs, so I'm really uninformed about cats. I didn't know you could give cats salami. Is that common? Or do you think they do that because Boots is (maybe) a picky eater?
@@Jen7867 I don't know if salami is a common cat treat. When I was a kid, my mom would give the neighborhood cats some chicken and hamburger pieces as treats. I've heard and seen some cats will go after human food in general.
@@Jen7867 salami is not a common cat treat. really, you shouldnt be giving cats salami. i imagine boots is picky if this is the type of treat they are giving her. or, they've just decided that since she's older they'll just make her happy and give her whatever.
I have a diabetic senior cat that my bf adopted from a friend who was unable to keep her. In many cats, the diabetes appears in their senior years and often has nothing to do with the care they have received. My kitty adores prosciutto like my bf. But she loves all treats. She has special food and insulin to help keep her condition under control and keep her healthy. We also have kittens, and they are helping her to exercise a bit more, too! Edit: please know she has only had prosciutto once in her life. And that is because we were eating some and dropped a scrap! She went absolutely nuts and kept begging for more, but we know she shouldn’t really eat it, and didn’t give it to her.

You are so kind with the kitties, it warms my heart. I like the blue thing on Boots, she looked like a Babushka, or Babuskat if you will.
In my experience they're all weird!
oh gosh, never even heard of that before !!!
@@shendisackettchasing the tail as if not attached is a sign of hyperesthesia. It's a nerve issue, or a hurt spine.
That's how my boy is, it could be my comb or brush or any of his, he love love loves a good brushing
Its crazy that people will abandon great cats. I've gotten several that way!
Thank you for taking care of the cat it's owners abandoned! You and your family ROCK!!!
They may have moved to a place that did not allow pets. Could have been an older person moving to a nursing facility. You may never know.
I’m sorry you lost your companion, even if it’s been a long time. We’re so blessed by the time we get with our pets.
@@pliktl I agree there's no reason to abandon an animal, especially in an empty house, but unfortunately those programs don't really get enough traction to work well. At least near me, you either dump a cat outside or get denied by shelters/programs to surrender because they're full. it's really sad and probably why a lot of people just abandon pets :o(
This is what I call a cat who is used to grooming!!! What a cuddly soft cat. I hope Boots isn't having it too rough with the illness
For being a feisty kitty who doesn’t like to be groomed, Charles did a fabulous job!
Boots' paws must feel so much better with her nails clipped, what a sweet cat
her nails seem like they’d be difficult to cut at home too with how thick they are, my cat’s nail clippers def wouldnt be able to get through that 😳 im glad the owners were able to send her in before they got worse
@@nckojitathere is no excuse to letting those nails get that bad. If you can feed your cat you can buy clippers that cut through nails.

Dishonour on you, dishonour on your cow! And your bathtub!

And a few only cats know! 😂

Your patience with Charlie is amazing. He had sooooo much to say about the process, but you had such an understanding about the sensitivity of cats, that it was a pleasure to watch! Thanks for the chance to see how a pro works with squirmy little kitties! Great job!
Charly looks pissed at the end too but far less pissed than at the beginning. Guess you did a good job to him :) Both cats are very cute
LOVE the high amount of cat content, Vanessa!
It's good to get the word out on the beauty and perfection of cats as family members...and the hilarious content they bring when grooming!
Ours gains the strength of atlas when it comes to bath time. I swear, once she got a grip on the door frame going into the bathroom that would rival my own!!
@williamcainjr8496 Lol! I saw a YT video of a dog gripping the door frame to get out of having a bath. I haven't seen a cat doing it yet, but I totally believe it. 🤣
Yes, I’ve noticed that too! It seems almost like 50-50 now. Whereas before it was more like 10% cat.

That duck soap dispensor is adorable!
Was hoping for more info down here on the newest toy.
I read this too fast, at first I thought it was a duck soup dispenser. Then I thought, wow that’s neat, I have never seen a duck soup dispenser. I bet that cats just love it.😂
Your cousins cats are so good-natured and beautiful. They are obviously well loved.
I'm always surprised how content the cats are to stay on the table, even when they're not enjoying it. Thanks for these lovely videos!
@@StreetPreacherr not necessarily. It varies from cat to cat, from breed to breed. Also individual predispositions play a huge role.
Boots' face markings are very cute, I hope she's getting all the care she needs to be a happy old lady.
I have a black and white cat with nearly identical face marking! And size...he chonk. 😅
I love how she just melted into the table when you finished cutting her nails. 🥰🥰🤣
I love watching these videos with my mom. We never get tired of it, its so satisfying and comforting to see such a passionate and gentle groomer. You’re the best ever thank you for sharing your work and taking good care of people’s pets❤❤
There is so much love in this! Thank you.
@@1CherryTree Poor sweeties. We try to do our best for them.
Mine would underexercise except they put each other through their paces.
@@selinesbeau 😂❤ I used to worry about my young cat picking on my older, lager, diabetic cat. Then I saw him actually run and decided the occasional chase did him good. 😊
@@laineymcd4074a motivated cat is capable of all kinds of things 😅

Charles is so cute. He looked like he gave up on life during his groom. What a doll.
Congrats on 1 million! I guess I might be a little late to the party. So happy to see your second channel doing so well.
Lovely cats. So relaxing to watch you groom them.
Had a beauty like this one named Misty. My grumpy old lady, I miss her. She lived to her 20s and was a chonky girl when she passed, the vet was shocked at how old she was because she looked so healthy. Took a piece of my heart with her.
My cat developed diabetes at age 12. I tried the insulin injections, but I think we caught it too late. 😿
@@blackraven137 and pretty common in unregulated diabetic cats
@@tamil9542 Well, diabetic cats are still cats. If it's already common in cats that aren't diabetic, then it might be unrelated to diabetes even if diabetic cats have it too ;)
These cats were describes as elderly, and it is common for elderly cats to have a thinner coat above the eyes - not unlike how humans get thinner hair as we grow old.
It's important to look for additional symptoms to narrow down the actual cause,
*Here's a list of additional things that can cause hair loss in cats, in case some other cat owner is reading this and worry about their fur baby:*
stress
genetics
excessive grooming
inflammatory disease
a hormonal disorder
bacterial, fungal or parasitic infection
protein deficiency
allergies
It's a long list, but with most of those things there should be *additional symptoms* to look for to narrow it down. And again, *sometimes cats just get thin fur from normal aging.* Unlike humans, cats don't seem to have gendered patterns of hair loss, but the thinning is easier to spot on cats with light skin and short dark fur.

What an absolute angel of a soccer ball of a cat!! Such a lovely kitty!!
Fyi i counted and it's approximately 25% of cats breeds that follows that specific narrative 😂 it's indeed the most common way to start a cat breed
Farmer John's cat was bus-ay! XD
"Sumo-wrestling acrobat" is definitely fitting for a cat escaping something they don't want to do!😂

I am glad that your cousin adopted and rescue this kitty. I hope her skin continues to improve and that her new diet helps with her medical issues.

“Charlie is not giving up”. Charlie flops to one side, looks calm, and plots his escape, revenge and world domination.
He does sometimes go out in the rain, so hopefully that means he won't be scared of some soap and water :)
Which breed do people find to the be the HEALTHIEST felines? I love cats, but just HATE the idea of dropping a few grand on some treatment that might or might not work, and the cat ending up with a significantly diminished quality of life anyway.
It might be cruel to say, but 15 years isn't bad for a cat, and kittens are nearly free... So if I there's ever a $10K Vet Bill, decisions might needs to be made. And don't talk to be about insurance, in my experience Pet Insurance is almost useless for anything you'd REALLY need it for.
